New direction for Jaye P Morgan.......2006-01-17
At the start of the 1970s, singer Jaye P Morgan completely reivented herself. In an effort to stay contemporary and appeal to a younger audience, she discarded her conservative image and updated her repertoire. Sporting a hip new look and attitude, she would be almost unrecognizable from the persona that she projected during the previous two decades. You won't find any trace of her big band/supper club sound in this self titled album from 1976. The light disco rhythm heard in the opening track is pervasive throughout several others. Her style here is obviously more funky. She's even backed by the ubiquitous black female soul group. Produced by a young David Foster, the album includes songs by composers Stevie Wonder and Valerie Simpson. It was originally released on a small west coast label. At the time, Jaye P's celebrity was largely generated as a game show panelist, where she gained notoriety for her risque commentary, especially on "The Gong Show." Unfortunately, the career move may have diminished her reputation as a singer. With scant promotion and limited distribution, the LP sold poorly. I am surprised that it has been reissued on CD. Then again, the Japanese have a talent for rescuing obscure albums from oblivion. Although some fans may not quickly embrace this new style, Jaye P, to her credit, was never one to remain a nostaglia act. She always continued to evolve as an artist in order to survive in show business. If you are thinking of buying this CD, don't hesitate. It will likely go out of print as quickly as the LP did.

Album Description
Jaye P. Morgan may be forever associated with The Gong Show in the minds of younger generations, but this pop vocalist and former girl singer with Hank Penny's band racked up a healthy string of hits in the '50s. Duets with Perry Como and Eddy Arnold, and her career hit 'That's All I Want From You,' are present on this 20-track anthology of Morgan's RCA years. Also of note is the exciting 1955 hit 'Pepper Hot Baby,' a song that has become something of a minor rock & roll classic among collectors. Jaye P. Morgan on RCA passes up some of her lesser hits in favor of more obscure selections, but all of the important singles are here on this effective single-disc anthology. Collectors' Choice. 1997.

STILL WAITING FOR THE BEST ONE..............2001-01-31
Of the CD's available by this unique and talented song stylist, this one is fine (though an odd mix of songs.) 'The Longest Walk,' 'Easy Does It,' and 'Echo of Love' are standouts. HOWEVER........Jaye P. Morgan recorded one absolutely perfect album in her long career, and that white-covered masterpiece was called WHAT ARE YOU DOING THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. Unfortunately, it was released on an oddball label (Beverly Hills) and I've never seen it on CD. If anyone knows where a CD version of that great album could be found.....or even who I should write to urging its release.....please, let me know! Mike Burns, meskb@in-motion.net. Thanks!
Jaye P. Morgan on RCA.......2001-01-12
From the moment that I heard "The Longest Walk" for the first time (and that was in the early seventies), I became an avid fan of Jaye P. Morgan, buying her records whenever I could find them.
Well, here is a collection of her finest 45s (and one album cut) recorded for RCA in the 1950s. "The Longest Walk" , needless to say, never sounded better.
Many cuts are her sides with the Hugo Winterhalter Orchestra. But one outstanding number is "Blind Date" written by Leiber- Stoller. Her plaintive delivery of that chestnut melts my heart. As for the rest of the selections, well they won't disappoint either. The song "The I'll Be Happy" (in stereo) was lifted from her second LP for the label "Just You,Just Me". The LP is a five star knock-out, and currently available as an import.
Her best work did not end at RCA, however. She signed with MGM Records in 1959 where she recorded the exemplary "Slow & Easy" as well as three more fine LPs including a delightful country album.
However, her best sides for that label were actually released on two 45s. The first was "Will He Like Me" from the broadway show "She Loves Me." The second was her quintessential version of the standard "I'm Nobody's Sweetheart." She really lets loose on this song. The orchestra, conducted by Marty Paiche on both songs, hits a home run.
I'm still hoping that Polygram, which I assume still owns the MGM masters, will release these records in the future. Jaye P.'s fans have waited long enough.
Great music from an excellent song stylist!.......1999-08-15
This compilation collects many of Jaye P.'s wonderful hit recordings from her RCA tenure, also included are some great LP cuts. Jaye P.'s voice is outstanding, she is a great vocal stylist! The quality of the CD is top notch! This is a welcome addition to anyones CD library.
Excellent album, Jaye P. Morgan is at her peak........1999-04-29
Jaye P. Morgan's clean, crisp singing style is apparent and the sound is good on this album. Jaye P. sings with a style that shows much creativity as she uses subtle changes in each song. If she were around today, she could adapt her style and be comtempory in today's ballad music. She sings with much heart and sensitivity on the ballad songs and sings with a bright, fun heart on the more upbeat songs. They bring back the 50's with a bang. She was so popular for a few years and then disappeared. This album shows her very unique style and is a must for any Jaye P. Morgan fan. It's good to hear from her again.

Customer Reviews:
One of the very best pop vocalists of the 1950s!.......2001-02-04
As a mid-period Boomer long interested in the pop music that was charting prior to my arrival, I was amazed and delighted to discover through this excellent CD that Jaye P. Morgan was one of the very best popular singers of the 1950s! Having only heard a couple of her RCA novelty sides, I was not prepared for the elegant, beautifully-assured, and classy ballad performances contained herein, of which "The Longest Walk" might be the best. In fact, this side may be the quintessential 1950s pop ballad. No serious fan of 1950s popular vocalizing can be without this CD. The technical aspects are near-perfect, and the price is right. Grab it, quickly and greedily!
Where is Sunday Kind Of Love.......2000-06-04
I started looking for Jaye P. Morgan when the song, "A Sunday Kind Of Love", suddenly came to mind as I was driving the other day. It has always been my favorite Jaye P. Morgan song from when I first heard her sing it back in the 50's and I can't understand why it isn't on any of the listings here. If anyody knows where I can find a CD or casette with Sunday Kind Of Love on it, please let me know.Carnes32 @AOL.com.
Another middle of the road pop singer from the 50's.......2000-05-19
Another talentless hack like Patti Page and Teresa Brewer, a middle of the road pop singer... if you want to hear a good vocalist from the 50's try June Christy or Chris Connor, but for gosh sakes stay away from Jaye P Morgan.
She really was a singer, ya know..........1999-12-09
Those of us lucky enough to remember the Jaye P. of the mid-to-late 50s revel in these finds. I used to scout record collector conventions just trying to find old 45s of "Danger, Heartbreak Ahead." It took me years. But it was worth it. Then (sigh) they came out with it all nice and clean on CD. If you collect music, not just records, you'll love this collection. "Longest Walk" is also one of my favorites. Yes, America -- Jaye P. Morgan did a helluva lot more than appear on the Gong Show...a clear, bouncy phrasing that is impeccable.
Jaye P. Morgan at her very best!.......1999-08-09
This CD is Jaye P. Morgan in her prime and at her very best. It includes all of her RCA hits and her three Derby hit recordings circa 1953. The quality is outstanding! The liner notes include comments from Jaye P. This is truly a pleasurable trip down memory lane.

Product Description
The timelessness of singer Jaye P. Morgan's artistry and appeal is propelled forward once again with the re-issue of Jaye P. Morgan Lately! The legendary entertainer delivers an ever-impressive selection of strong and sensuous musical backdrops with this recording. Originally produced in 1983, Lately! exemplifies most notably the singer's supreme and intuitive vocal style clear of distraction, and captures her trademark ability to blend pop, jazz, and cabaret. Each of the eight tracks is laced with her soulful and direct interpretation, ranging from a charging rendition of Every Breath You Take, pop flavored Fascinated and Cheatin' Me, to the breathtakingly-beautiful title track, Lately!. Morgan recalls Song On The Sand from the Broadway show La Cage Aux Folles so masterfully, and delivers the swinging rendition of That Old Feeling. Adept at going anyplace musically, Morgan returns to a more intimate mood with Be Gentle Tonight, and the dream state of Carousel Dreams, the latter not previously featured on the original LP release. Her inflections alter to capture each mood in a way that only a performer of her supreme league is capable of doing. Lately! is Jaye P. Morgan's most widely-appealing assemblage of classic tunes to date. Richly arranged and backed by a talented cast of musicians, she is in familiar territory with this sophisticated and striking repertoire of material. Having spent a lifetime as a performer, this lady always delights her audiences with her energetic and inventive performances. We are most fortunate to take a glimpse at her extraordinary musical offerings in this celebrated re-issue of Lately. - Mike Donaldson, Associate Producer, JAYE P. MORGAN LATELY!
Customer Reviews:
SUBLIME & CLASSIC VOCALS~BRAVO JAYE P. MORGAN!!!.......2007-05-15
Jaye P. Morgan is one of the finest singers in the music world over the past 50 years and should have been a household name as a Legendary Singer and not for "The Gong Show". Lucky to see Jaye P. in concert a number of times in the seventies and then again in the early nineties, there is nobody around to compare to this great and sublimely soulful singer who is a complete original and the great J.P. is peerless! Merv Griffin did whole ninety minute shows with this legendary lady and Merv always knew the best in great singers and performers and you could tell that he was enthralled with her talent and she really delivered on these shows when she sang but sadly didn't have any promotion on her great recordings from this period and her masterwork lp "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?" and the definitive on 45rpm only version of Leon Russell's "A Song For You" (both on Beverly Hills Records) are lost masterpieces that need to be released on compact disc. Thankfully this wonderful "Lately!" from the eighties is now out for everyone to savor and enjoy who really know how to appreciate a great singer in prime form and this is a wonderful diverse collection of songs that catch J.P. in riveting form ranging from torchy, soulful, fine and funky to soulfully sublime and nobody does it better! Listen how deep J.P. goes inside of the Stevie Wonder gem "Lately" and experience an artist who is capable of riveting emotional intensity..."Song Of The Sand" from "La Cage Aux Folles" is brilliant and mesmerizing while the thrilling big-band classic "That Old Feeling" is so loose and classic Jaye P. Morgan making it totally amazing that this great collection of tremendous and richly varied performances slipped through the cracks...little wonder the music industry is in the dismal shape it is in because it didn't build the business on real talent such as Jaye P. Morgan. Bravo J.P. and thank you for years of wonderful entertainment and we miss you!!!
Great music from a great talent.......2005-11-23
Jaye P Morgan's music is just as fresh, flawless, and fabulous as when she was exploded on the music scene in the 1950s. She is an incredible talent and can sing any type of music with soul, spirit, and sensuality. She was hip, and one of Johnny Carson's favorite singers and guests throughout the 60s and 70s, and when you hear this CD, you will know why. She has class and is a real pro. This CD offers a pleasing and enjoyable mix of music, and shows that Jaye P can master any contemporary music melody and make it her own. "Cheatin Me" is sexy, and "Lately" is intimate and revealing. All tracks are great, and I highly recommend. She's right up there with the best - Lena Horne, Rosemary Clooney, and Cleo Lane. J.
NO GONG FOR JAYE P. LATELY!.......2005-10-22
I guess everybody remembers Jaye P. Morgan from the Gong Show, how Chuck Barris used to introduce her by saying "And here she is, Jaye. P. Mor-goan!!!" But I remember she sang and had hit records long before the Barris show ever came along, and she has really got a great set of pipes. This CD has some of her best performances. She sings "Lately" better than the man who wrote it, ditto "Every Breath You Take," and her version of "Song On The Sand" brings tears to my eyes. "Carousel Dreams" is a knock-out heartbreaker too, and "That Old Feeling" is pure Morgan at the top of her game. Eight songs in all, but the way Miss Morgan sings them, you think there are fifty. In today's music world, everybody is a "singer." But rest assured, hardly any of those "singers" can sing like Jaye P. Morgan does. If you know who she is, you'll want this CD. But if you don't know who she is, meet Jaye P. Morgan on "Lately!" This is one CD you will play again and again. Believe me when I tell you, I do.

TWO SUPERB DIVAS...WOULD BE A TOTALLY HOT LIVE ACT!!! .......2003-08-23
Jaye P. Morgan should have been a huge Superstar singer but she was at her peak when the singer-songwriters were the only ones being played on the radio...yet her classic take on Leon Russell's "A Song For You" is the definitive version of this standard and I have the old 45 rpm that does prove this!!! This collection finds Jaye P. at her peak with the wonderfully talented Kaye Ballard who also knows her way with a great song...both are wonderful on the duets and the solo's are all winners! Jaye P. gives a classic performance in the unique and wildly witty "Dr. Feelgood" and Kaye has haunting and beautiful moments that will take your breath away!!! Legendary arranger Peter Matz brilliantly arranged this classic work and these DIVA'S should take this show on the road as it would be a mega-hit for sure...perfect Broadway two-woman show!
