Some Cats Know

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Jazz vocalist Connie Evingson is joined by a true all-star cast for Some Cats Know: Ray Brown, Al Grey, Doc Severinsen, and Jimmy Hamilton, to name a few. (Evingson's usual Minneapolis-based band is on hand as well, including Sanford Moore on piano, Terry Moore on bass, and Dave Karr on saxophone.) The song list is great, too: "I've Got the World on a String," "Yesterday/Yesterdays" (crossing Lennon-McCartney with Kern-Harbach), "All the Things You Are," "'Round Midnight," and "Anthropology." Highlights include a lickety-split Cole Porter melody of "I Love Paris" and "It's Alright with Me" punctuated by bursts of scat, sax, and percussion, and a lilting "Bluesette" with composer Toots Thielemans guesting on harmonica. --David Horiuchi --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

5 out of 5 stars a very go9od jazz singer.......2006-11-10

great selection of tunes with very good arrangements, sung by a very good singer

5 out of 5 stars Excellent singer!.......2005-09-06

I have recently discovered Connie and her beautiful voice. She is outstanding and really can project her style of jazz. I have purchased all of her CDs and am looking forward to more.

4 out of 5 stars Serene and Sexy.......2003-10-10

This album grows on me the more I hear it. She has a new slant on some old favorites that are becoming MY favorites! She also has put some songs together that I've never heard before ("Some Cats Know," for one) that I am glad to know. Good, easy listening music with a soft swing beat.

5 out of 5 stars A great new find!.......2002-07-25

Every so often, I come across a CD by an artist unknown to me, and I have to ask myself why on earth I haven't heard of this person before. Connie Evingson is one such artist.

Kicking off with a slow, sexy version of "Some Cats Know", you could stop the disc right there and decide you want to keep the CD, but the solid tracks just keep on coming, song after song. "I Love Paris/It's Alright with Me", "Close Your Eyes", "I've Got the World on a String", and others, wrapping up with a swinging version of "Anthropology" (slightly rewritten as a tribute to Sheila Jordan). Probably most surprising is Connie's cover of the Beatle standby "Yesterday", which Connie gives her specialized jazz treatment. Although hardly considered a jazz number, Connie successfully makes "Yesterday" work as one anyway.

Snap up a copy of this CD. You can't go wrong, I swear! And if you like Connie's style here, I would also recommend Tierney Sutton's self-titled debut album, or Christine Hitt's "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To".

5 out of 5 stars Singing by one classy cat.......2000-06-13

All the songs on Connie Evingson's latest cd, Some Cats Know, are tastefully arranged. Connie's singing is always in control and in strong sympathy with the lyric. Two outstanding cuts are the medley of Yesterday/Yesterdays and Blusette. The pairing of the Lennon/McCartney Yesterday with the Kern/Harbach Yesterdays is so obvious, yet I can't remember hearing it done by anyone else. Yesterday is done first in a slow, torchy, my-heart-just-broke way and then Yesterdays picks up the tempo a bit, fast forwarding to a later day when yesterday is a distant memory. Blusette, accompanied by the composer, Toots Thielemans, on harmonica is sung in a pleasantly relaxed tempo. If you enjoy straight ahead jazz singing as done by singers such as Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, June Christy or Chris Connor then you will enjoy this cd.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Swinging but somewhat bland.......2007-01-22

Not entering the discussion of Peggy Lee's singing, I must say this CD is somewhat bland.
Bryson really sounds more like a good pop singer with a jazzy hinges than like a full fledged jazz singer... That would not be such a big problem generally speaking if most of the arrangements weren's quite jazzed up...

Supporting cast is excellent, particularly tenor sax of Red Holloway and the clarinet guest spot for Paquito D'Rivera; without them three stars would be quite enough for this album. This way, it's quite an enoyable listening experience, but far from essential or brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic ......It's The Only Fitting Description.......2006-03-08

I only wonder why she hasn't recorded more often! On this cd she doesn't try to imitate Peggy Lee, to her credit, but she still has a lot of similarities in phrasing , nuance and intonation. She has a very sensuous delivery which I can only describe as late night....verging on the erotic. The supporting musicians, particularly tenor saxist Red Holloway and guitarist John Chiodini are a perfect fit to the spell that she weaves.

This is a late review with the cd having been out for a number of years but anytime the cd is played the listener has to admit that this is one fine songstress!

5 out of 5 stars Like Father, Like Daughter.......2000-09-23

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! With an unerring sense of swing and a velvet voice, the daughter of Dizzy Gillespie reworks this classic Peggy Lee material in a style all her own, accompanied by a killer rhythm section. And check out the superb solo work by sax veteran Red Holloway throughout, and the star turn on clarinet by Paquito D'Rivera. For anyone who loves Peggy Lee, and for fans of Jeanie Bryson, this is a "must have " CD!

5 out of 5 stars Good Singing and Good Playing.......1999-08-09

I'd recommend this CD on the quality of the accompanyment as much as the singing. Without sounding old fashioned, it really swings. Paquito D'Rivera holds forth on clarinet, with Red Holloway on Tenor and Ronnie Buttacavoli on Trumpet. A five piece rhythm section fills out the band. The singing is great too, but it's not often the band is this good. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A total delight!.......1999-06-16

Ms. Bryson's taste, phrasing and sense of humor compare most favorably with Miss Peggy's. It's a ftting tribute, and most certainly not an imitation. You won't be disappointed--it's one long smile.

--David Horiuchi
