Customer Reviews:
Keely Rocks.......2007-01-23
This album really showcases the great talent that is Keely Smith. Her range and voice control come through beautifully. She is too much unheralded among the female vocalists of her era.
When Your Lover Has Gone.......2006-03-10
I bought the album because I heard the above titled song on live365 (Music from the Blue Light, I think). But I like most of the other songs on the album too. I had no idea she did much without Louis Prima. Her voice is sultry and soft and sexy, but really strong at appropriate moments.
I may buy other albums of hers.
The best in the business.......2004-12-29
Of the classic era women standards singers, Keely is the best. It's as simple as that-her only rival in my mind is the late Susannah McCorkle, who recorded much later and died relatively young. And there's no denying that while McCorkle often had a more introspective, intellectual approach to the song, Keely swung and did so effortlessly, without the appearance of thought (which had to be deceiving-Keely has to be very intelligent to do what she does).
A lot of the difference is that Keely faced a mike with working 50's and 60's orchestras with Billy May and Nelson Riddle charts whereas modern singers like McCorkle and Karrin Allyson have-if they're lucky- Concord Jazz bands, who mostly play bop jazz and other hophead stuff.
You just can't go wrong with this compilation if you want the pure Keely Smith.
Cool collection of a cool singer's repertoire!.......2004-10-29
For those who are not familiar with Keely Smith's voice, this CD will have you hooked. Keely's range can go from silky smooth to jazzy hot from song to song. Her voice can lull you or make you jump up and want to sing along with her. This collection shows off Keely's range very well. There are some jazzy numbers, such as ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET and some lush torch songs, like I WISH YOU LOVE. Her voice can be powerful, but not overwhelming, soft, but not breathy. If you like listening to female lounge-style singers, you'll love Keely!
Keely - the voice that could bring an audience to a hush.......2004-10-14
I first saw Keely perform with her husband Louis Prima on Ed Sullivan's TV show. I was instantly curious to get a good look at the face that matched such a silky-smooth voice. Alas, black-and-white TV complete with snow foiled me on at least two occasions. However, I never forgot that voice - and once you hear it, neither will you. It is remarkable in its quality and timbre.
Nelson Riddle and Billy May, as well as a few other of the great Capitol arrangers and bandleaders, provide solid and top-notch backing for a legendary performer. DON'T TAKE YOUR LOVE FROM ME, SWEET AND LOVELY, and a host of other standards, performed ballad-style, will keep you enthralled and wondering why, with all of her style, she backed out of performing for so long.
And yes-the face does match the voice. Thank goodness for COLOR television!

Customer Reviews:
Album Lived Up To Its Namesake.......2005-11-18
The CD contains some of her best works of which she employs her big vocal range (soprano to baritone), sweet, sassy voice and excellent signature vibrato (as evident on "Speak Low") on various styles of music. As a Great American Songbook interpreter, her technique is good and musicians treat her as a part of their own due to her creativity in music improvisation and utilisation of her voice as a musical instrument (scat-singing).
Typically most of her songs are of jazz. However, the other variants are:
1) Doo-wop - All of Me
2) Oldies - Broken-Hearted Melody
3) Classical - My Man's Gone Now (Written by Gershwin)
4) Bossa Nova - Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Latin version sung by Astrud Gilberto)
5) Blues - No Count Blues
This CD is good, especially for starters. Sarah Vaughan is quite a diverse artiste. If you found any of the styles above is good, try getting her CDs, which is of the same genre that you like:
1) Doo-wop - Count Basie & Sarah Vaughan (collaborative work)
2) Oldies - *
3) Classical - Sarah Sings Gershwin
4) Bossa Nova - I Love Brazil , Copacabana
5) Blues - *
6) Swing - Sarah Swings Tivoli, Swingin' Easy
7) Broadway - Sarah Sings Broadway
8) Cool Jazz - Crazy and Mixed Up
It should be taken note that, in a quirk of nature, her voice "dropped" in her later years of her career. In the late 70s to 1990, her range increased "downwards" significantly (to the baritone level). At that point of time, her voice becomes less sweeter, but she sounds fuller. At this point of time, her voice has certain smoky quality. Her vocal technique is at her best and deserves recommendation, as evident in these albums:
1) Crazy and Mixed Up - Cool jazz
2) Send In The Clowns
3) How Long Has This Been Going On? - The smokey voice is more evident here
The only album that I will not recommend is Sarah Swings The Beatles. The production of the songs will not appeal to listeners who like her singing. The mixing of the music is poor as well.
* Still searching for the appropriate album. Will update once I get it
Classic Sara Vaughn.......2003-10-16
A real treat to listen to. Soulful, sassy, well composed, some of her great songs for sure - but not all of them.
Sarah and Orchestras.......2001-11-27
Great singers do not need big ensembles. Although this is a CD of high merit, the orchestra and jazz ensemble obsure the beauty, enchantment and (vocal)timbre changes that Sarah Vaughan so often exhibits in her works. Although I love vocal virtuosity, the vocal acrobatics presented here are a bit much; but, due to the quality of some songs selected, I will only assume, Sarah had no choice. Thank goodness the song "Feelings" was not written, as of yet (I think), during the time this album of songs was produced. However, for those who prefer big orchestras accompanying singers, this is the album for you.
UNEQUALED CROSS-OVER ARTIST.......2000-08-31
Sarah Vaugh's song "Broken Hearted Melody" that went to the top of the POP Charts in 1958/59 is an example of a pure artist who can use her voice in any venue. This is an excellent album. To me it's her finest produced.

Customer Reviews:
Sit back close your eyes and just move to the beat........2006-07-11
This is a great cd. I heard it inside a little music place one day and asked the old lady who was singing the song I was hearing. She got me out this cd and I got it for like 8 dollars. Every song on here is so great. I am only 21 and I love it. It makes me miss old good music like this. So unless you only like a certin kind of music I say get this it has amazing songs and is very relaxing. You may be able to find it at a lower price at your local record store so you may want to check there first.
An Aptly Titled Jazz Album.......2002-02-06
This is the quintessential collection of the best female voices in jazz. This collection has the songs that made these women famous and/or the songs for which they are most remembered. Every song on the cd is a gem!!! The highlights are Ella's live recording of "It Don't Mean a Thing(If It Ain't Got That Swing)" and Nina Simone's "I Loves You, Porgy." All twelve songs run the gamut of emotions from true bliss to deepest sorrow. These women knew how to sing and these selections are some of the greatest in the american songbook. I highly recommend this cd.
Great old Gems.......2002-01-24
There is nothing smoother than the voices of these great ladies. Put it in the car and you won't stress about rush hour any more.
great intro!.......2001-01-06
I bought this CD a few years ago on a whim, never having listened to jazz before. I fell in love with Ella Fitzgerald's voice, she's outstanding. This CD features some great female voices, incredible musicianship and for price, you cannot go wrong!
good cd.......2000-05-04
this a good cd full of great ladies of jazz (hence the name) singing some of the classic jazz tunes. its a steal at 6 clams. trust me and cough up for it. i'v got not regrets

Dinah Washington - The Great Songs.......2007-01-10
I got this disc for the song "What a Diff'rence a Day Made," which,
in Spanish is "Cuando vuelvas a tu lado." The song is an all-time
favorite of mine. I did not find the recording to be as clear as
I would have liked. I'm keeping it, though.
Must Have CD.......2005-10-04
Before buying this CD, I knew Dinah Washington best for her couple of top 10 hits such as What A Difference A Day Made and This Bitter Earth, and for her duets with Brook Benton. As this CD proves, there is so much more to her, and her 50s recordings found here show that she ranks among the blues, jazz and R&B greats. She gets some fine smokey arrangements as well on many of the cuts, with players such as Jimmy Cleveland and Wynton Kelly. Only one song here doesn't work for me and it's one I'd thought would be a killer, I've Got You Under My Skin. Powerful as the whole CD is, I think it peaks at the end, beginning with the Birth of the Blues/Don't Hurt Any More. This CD is for anyone with an interest in the history of mid-20th century jazz and blues and it's a just tribute to a wonderful singer.
Somebody Do A Movie On This Woman..........2004-02-11
...maybe it will wake my generation up to respect this woman. Her music and life is truly a discovery of wonder, love, comedy, and heartaches. If you thought Whitney's life is a mess, you need to research Dinah's. At least Dinah had fun, right? The one thing I can say about Dinah is that all her trials, happiness and misfortunate she always put them into her songs. This woman was not shy about being real when it came to her music and it didn't matter whether it was pop, jazz, blues or r&b. And unlike Whitney and today's singers, she was a TRUE professional singer. She never allowed her personal problems to affect her music. I wish somebody will do a movie about her life and get Jill Scott to play her. Until then, I will continue to listen to this woman's amazing music and dreaming of the day that she gets some respect. If you are new to Dinah, this is the collection you need to start with.
Classy.......2002-07-17
Dinah Washington is truly a Singer's Singer. She understood the power of Lyrics&the Importance of allowing the feeling&emotions come through. She is a Great Stylish Artist who had no limits. Her take on "I've got you under my skin" alone is worth the full Price to Me overall. She knew how to Swing&Connect with Her Music.
The Title Is Accurate: This Really Is An Essential!.......2002-06-02
Reknowned for a straight-forward, powerhouse voice and a knock-out stage presence, Dinah Washington is one of the great vocalists of the 20th Century--but is today little known outside the circle of serious jazz fans. This is a great pity, for the lady was a remarkable talent, as this Verve release makes abundantly clear.
Washington had a rather limited range, but like Billie Holiday she carefully sculpted her voice to maximum effect--and her instrument is a knock-you-flat one, with many of her vocals relying on her ability to strike and hold a high, intensely voiced tone. But if Washington's vocal range was limited, her material was not: she is as at home with hard jazz and blues as she is with sleek orchestral arrangements and throw-away numbers, and this collection presents examples of it all: from the funky jazz of "I've Got You Under My Skin," in which she offers a completely unexpected interpretation of the Cole Porter classic, to the more orchestrial scored "Blue Gardenia," a personal favorite, these cuts are winners all the way.
If you've heard about Dinah Washington but never actually encountered her music, this compilation is a perfect place to start. But be forewarned: the lady's music is addictive, and once you begin to explore it you're likely to leap feet first into every available recording. For once, the title THE ESSENTIALS is dead-on accurate; strongly recommended.

Take A Sentimental Journey.......2007-07-12
Another fabulous compilation of the music of another time. This one is as great as Volume 1. Another winner!!
Classy ladies singing classy tunes!.......2005-09-26
After watching a T V commercial with the song "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy" playing in the background, I wanted my daughters to hear the complete song. We found this and I was very pleased to see that it included more of the beautiful songs from that era with many more of my personal favorites such as "Sentimental Journey", "I Don't Know Enough About You" and "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief". Being a child of the sixties, these songs were popular before my time...but having been raised with an appreciation of the big band classics, I knew most of the tunes on this volume and wanted to give my daughters the same opportunity. It's great nostalgic music, with a wonderful variety of songs and artists. I highly recommend this musical...sentimental journey...back in time.
A strange, but pleasant collection.......2005-02-24
This CD is one of a number of CDs issued by Capitol with similar content; there is at least one other featuring female singers, and at least one specializing in male singers. The first thing to notice is that some singers are represented doing songs that other singers made famous, and even other singers who are on the CD as well. For example, Dinah Shore does Doris Day's "Sentimental Journey" while June Christy in turn does Dinah's "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy"! Another recording by Dinah Shore is, to be sure, one of a song she made famous, "I'll Walk Alone." But the version on this CD is not her 1944 hit version, but a much later recording (though this is not concealed in the liner notes). Obviously, much of what drove the selection of recordings for this CD was the availability of the song on Capital. Still, listening to the CD, I enjoyed all the performances, and consequently have to rate it as better than simply "OK" -- thus giving it 4 stars.
great intro.......2000-06-17

NAT KING COLE- "Sings the Great Songs/Thank You,Pretty Baby.......2006-12-03
Little else can be said that hasn't already been said about the great and immortal Nat King Cole. In this two in one CD which includes Nat's two great albums "Sings the Great Songs" and "Thank You, Pretty Baby" Nat King Cole gives us his unique versions of so many captivating hit love songs of his extensive repertoire. There are previously hard to find songs included here like the nostalgic "There's a Gold Mine in the Sky" and Nat's version of the 1957-58 hit "An Affair To Remember" which is the theme song of Leo Mc Carey's great love story staring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. I highly recommend this CD to anyone and its contents bring back a lot of wonderful memories of my youth and I'm sure that of so many of his fans.
"many hard-to-find releases ~ Nat King Cole".......2005-01-10
Purchased this compact disc from Amazon, received in less than five days and the shipping was FREE...the last of Nat King Cole twofer albums put on CD "Nat Cole Sings The Great Songs!" and "Thank You, Pretty Baby", arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins, David Cavanaugh and Ralph Carmichael with romance in the air and the magic of Nat's voice brings back the thrill.
You can't go wrong with any of Cole's albums that are now on CD...both are excellent, many are hard-to-find B-sides not well known...such as "BE STILL MY HEART", "BRAZILIAN LOVE SONG", "FAREWELL TO ARMS", "FOR THE WANT OF A KISS", "HAPPY NEW YEAR", composed by Gordon Jenkins, "I WISH I KNEW", "MAGIC MOMENT", "MAGIC NIGHT", "MAKE IT LAST", "MR. WISHING WELL", "ONE SUN", "THANK YOU, PRETTY BABY", "UNFAIR" and "UNITED", when it comes to interpretation and expertly performed, Nat is the master at his craft.
More familiar songs like "AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER", "AROUND THE WORLD", "FASCINATION", "I HAD THE CRAZIEST DREAM", a favorite of mine from the Betty Grable days of the '40s, "PEOPLE", hit song from the musical "Funny Girl", Nat has a way of making this his own, "THERE'S A GOLD MINE IN THE SKY", "YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU", performed and made popular by Al Jolson, Judy Garland and Harry James, "YOU'RE MY THRILL", a wonderful Joni James hit, but listen as Nat lays out his signature style and it's a classic again.
This collection is available on EMI/Capitol Import label and is only in the Mono version, but the care that was taken is incredible...a must have for all the fans of this beloved man...they'll never be another pass this way again...thanks to this UK release of Nat "King" Cole...just the way we like 'em!

TWO MORE GREAT NAT KING COLE ALBUMS.......2002-04-28
EMI has done it again; they've given us two great albums (one of which I don't believe was available here in the USA) on one spectacular disc. While the songs aren't necessarily "new" recordings (both albums were "pick ups", that is, comprised of previously recorded material) they certainly will sound "new" to fans of all ages. Capitol went into the vaults in the late 60's to come up with both of these great albums, with unreleased material or "B" sides that never made much impact and came up with two winners. The majority of the tracks were arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle, the master arranger and conductor who first recorded with Nat on "UNFORGETTABLE", a pairing that inevitably lasted decades, even through the Riddle/Sinatra years (although it was Riddle's occupation with Sinatra that would eventually cause he and Cole to drift away from each other, professionally) Just listen to the chart for AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER, impeccably framing Nat's subtle voice are strings and light percussion written as only Nelson could. Where the "hit version" of this song (by Vic Damone) was near-operatic, Nat's version is obviously toned down to suit his voice, but it never loses any of its beauty in lyric or performance. Just wonderful. Nat and Nelson have a go at the old standard FASCINATION, and the arrangement mirrors that of Unforgettable, complete with the special tag on the ending. A very nice treatment of this classic song. Nat was known for taking lesser known songs or brand new songs and making them great. One such song here, THERE'S A GOLD MINE IN THE SKY, harkens one back to Nat's "Ramblin' Rose" album, with it's country flavored beat and simple message. Nelson's chart will have you drifting to the stars. Gordon Jenkins, Capitol's other premire arranger and conductor, and Nat King Cole were no strangers either. Nat returns the favor to Gordon Jenkins for so many wonderful years (and albums)together here by singing Jenkins' own HAPPY NEW YEAR. Gordon also did the chart for his melancholy masterpiece (this chart is similar to the one Gordon wrote for Judy Garland's spectacular version of this song; nice to hear a "male" version of this one!) As always, the original liner notes and artwork has been restored here for you to enjoy. Hoping EMI finds something to pair up Nat's MY FAIR LADY album with and gets that out on CD; that appears to be the only album of this musical icon's that hasn't been on CD yet! Nat King Cole left us far too early in life; it's so great to know EMI keeps his music alive for generations to enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
Mel at his very best.......2007-01-10
There are so many high points in a Mel Torme' performance, it is difficult to point out just a few. This recording captures Mel Torme' not only at the top of his game vocally, but in his ideal setting-LIVE. It is not the best quality recording on the planet, but the caliber of the musicianship here outweighs those considerations. For a collector-a must. For the casual Mel listener-a must. Just a remarkable performance in every way from one of the most talented performers/musicians that ever lived. A big statement-but in Mel's case, just the truth.
Perfect Pleasure.......2007-01-08
Imaginative and at times unbaerably cool, Mel Torme proves at this concert how great and creative artist he is. Using interesting material (not necessarily the best known songs from the great American songbook...) and a big band capable of following his fancifull and technically very strong and versatile vocal flights, Mel shines in the best light at this album.
A true jazz experience from seasoned singer, still at the very peak of his powers.
Superb Singer, Superb Entertainer!.......2002-10-28
A truly great singer who had a superb vocal range and extra ordinary breath control. Mel could really play to an audience and always (as on this cd) provided a wide range of material which included a variety of moods and tempos. Also he was a pretty good drummer as demonstrated on "Rockin' In Rhythm". I haven't heard anyone who could segue from one song to another as facilely as Mel ("Ridin' High" into "I'm Shootin' High").....or with as much humor ("I'll Remember April/I Concentrate On You"). I've never heard him fail to give credit to the accompanying musicians and he always keeps the audience informed of the music(listen to his intro on "I'm GonnaGo Fishin'").
If you dig a great vocalist.....and one who can scat with the best, this is a must!
Mel Torme: live, in a small club.... -Wow!.......2001-12-28
The greatest "missed opportunity" regret of my life, musically speaking, was missing a chance to see Mel and his band on a Canadian tour in the late '80s. I was booked to fly to Europe five days before he would play in my home city.
This CD gives a glimpse into the amazing experience of Mr. Torme in concert, even late in his life. This was recorded in NYC at a small club where Mel had an annual standing date with a big band. As it happens, this is the disc I had playing when I logged onto this site, and as I'm sitting here listening I had to write my endorsement. Quite simply, Mel Torme is arguably the most overlooked talent in Jazz singing, and compared to some of his contemporaries (Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams) Mel's voice has aged amazingly; his voice is different than when he was 20, but I can't say it's diminished at all. This disc showcases his effortless phrasing, impeccable intonation and timing -a real vocal showcase! Listen as he perfectly scats a Charlie Parker solo on track 14! The song selections are summed up by the album title, but really are characteristic of a typical Torme live setlist: a mix of familiar and lesser-known songs by America's great composers.
One final detail to mention: the sonic quality of this disc is outstanding! It's on the Telarc label, noted for their quality recordings, and it really showcases what a good stereo system can do; there's a palpable sense of the recording venue, with a wide, deep soundstage and distinct imaging placement of the instruments.
vintage Torme.......1999-05-06
This is a very classy CD. Very smooth and listenable. Put this on along with other Torme CDs or some Julie London, Sarah Vaughn, maybe June Christie and pour yourself a double (Glenlivit or Crown Royal is my choice) , sit back in you favorite chair and let the music take you away.

Every body must have this CD........2006-03-04
This is a real good compilation of Gershwin's pieces in unforgettable voices. This compilation is exactly that I loved, may be there somebody who loves the hiss, and clickers; I don't. The master was a nice job, mixed well. You can hear in a 5.1 or 7.1 and you hear the feeling of the musicians, the great ladies, and of course, the Great Gershwin.
The Ladies Sing with Class.......2005-08-13
These are classic renditions of classic Gershwin from Verve Records. The only disappointment is The Dinah Washington rendition of Summertime is an instrumental, no Dinah singing, unless she's humming in the background. The trumpet solo is marvelous. She does sing "I've got a crush on you." No liner notes are provided. All you get is the singer, the title and the original album.
They're Singing Gershwin Songs....'S Wonderful, Ladies!.......2004-11-21
This CD is a compilation of some of the nicest songs by the legendary team of George and Ira Gershwin. These songs were taken from nine various albums and interpreted by the most remarkable songbirds of all-time: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Shirley Horn and Betty Carter.
Ella, the queen of jazz, who needs no introduction, performs three of the eleven tracks, "Fascinating Rhythm," "Nice Work If You Can't Get It" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me."
Sarah, the divine one, delivers standout performances on "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off," "'S Wonderful," "Someone To Watch Over Me" and "Embraceable You."
Nina, the jazzy and soulful one, covers "I Love You, Porgy."
Dinah, the bluesy one who's better known for her rhythm & blues repertoire, sings "I've Got A Crush On You."
Shirley, the ballad singer and a talented pianist, performs "Our Love Is Here To Stay," one of the very last songs Gershwin composed.
Betty, the jazz singer/pianist with a husky-voice and has worked with the jazz greats Miles Davis and Quincy Jones, wraps it up with her rendition of "The Man I Love," one of the two bonus tracks, the other is Sarah Vaughan's "'S Wonderful."
This CD would have been great if not for the flaw on track #4. On the track listing, it's supposed to be Dinah singing "Summertime" but it's an instrumental version. Anyway, with all these great ladies in one CD, it's still worth listening to. The rest of the tracks overshadow this flaw. Nice work... ladies! Every performance is so remarkable and superb.
Love the CD and can answer the question.......2003-06-06
Trumpeter in Summertime is probably Clark Terry. This cut is taken from "Dinah Jams" on Verve and from the information on that CD it appears Clark Terry is featured there. This CD is the best of the best - composer, selections, and singers.
Love this CD, but i have a question.......2002-04-23
This is a great collection of songs but the track "Summertime" is not sung by Dinah Washington. It is an an amazing trumpet solo, i think is Louis Armstrong? Any way it is awesome.
