Isn't It Romantic
Editorial Reviews
Jazz Times
[Anderson's] voice is as strong as ever, just this side of husky, on Isn't It Romantic, a collection of standard ballads by Rogers/Hart and others. Backed by the Netherlands Metropole Orchestra, Anderson is in her element with this material.

"A Labor of Love Album".......2006-02-20
"Creating this album of romantic songs has truly been a labor of love. I have never before experienced such unconditional dedication and commitment from so many different people, all working toward a single goal. Collaborating with Johnny Mandel is a dream come true. He is a genius, a tireless worker, a gentle soul and a lovable man. It has been a privilege to work with him. If you have the feeling that I had a ball doing this album, you're absolutely right!" ~ Michael Feinstein ~
This collaboration between Michael Feinstein and Johnny Mandel is one of the best-ever Feinstein recordings of all-time. Mr. Mandel, who is a brilliant composer/conductor/arranger and has done several film and television musical scores and known as one of the best Sinatra arrangers, did a superb job on the stunning arrangements. The Oscar-winning composer also produced this album and chose the best studio musicians in this project most notably one of my favorite pianists, Alan Broadbent.
Presented in this "labor of love" album is a dozen of songs interpreted in sheer beauty and perfection. Mr. Feinstein has always been very resourceful in compiling songs that he would record and his musical knowledge is simply amazing. All his liner notes have been so informative and give accurate details about the origins of each song. He collected some of the best works from Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Larry Hart, Sammy Fain, Harry Warren, Jerome Kern, Burton Lane, and the Bergmans, among others, to offer another remarkable album not only for his fans but also for everyone who enjoys fine music.
My top favorite from this collection is a sentimental gem of a song by Rodgers and Hammerstein, "No Other Love," a song I've been hearing from my parents' collection (versions from Perry Como and Ella Fitzgerald) when I was growing up and so glad to hear a new charming version with fabulous arrangement. I totally embrace and welcome new interpretations of nostalgic songs that now give new significance to life in general. Some of the choice cuts are "Isn't It Romantic," a medley of "I Can Dream, Can't I"/ "I'll Be Seeing You," "A Fine Romance" and "Wasn't It Romantic," a uniquely beautiful version, which showed-off his creative style of singing and his ear-catching vocal artistry.
Mr. Feinstein is so privileged to be the first artist to record a meaningful song by Johnny Mandel/Alan and Marilyn Bergman "Where Do You Start?" It's a song that has the most poignant lyrics from this collection.
"Where do you start?
How do you separate the present from the past?
How do you deal with all the things
you thought would last, that didn't last?
With bits of memories scattered here and there
I look around and don't know where to start . . .
Which books are yours?
Which tapes and dreams belong to you and which are mine?
Our lives are tangled like the branches of a vine that intertwine
So many habits that we'll have to break
And yesterdays we'll have to take apart . . .
One day there'll be a song or something in the air again
To catch me by surprise and you'll be there again
A moment in what might have been
Where do you start?
Do you allow yourself a little time to cry?
Or do you close your eyes and kiss it all goodbye?
I guess you'll try. . .
And though I don't know where and don't know when
I'll find myself in love again
I promise there will always be
A little place no one will see
A tiny part deep in my heart
That stays in love with you."
You'll enjoy this CD. It's truly a labor of love.
TOTAL ROMANCE.......2005-05-19
If you want to fully enjoy the grand nature of this CD, pour yourself a glass of VERY GOOD WINE, be sure it is poured into WATERFORD, lower the lights, light the fireplace, then sit down and enjoy!...You will be lost in the magic of this performance.
Romantic songs from the soap opera Santa Barbara.......2004-05-04
If you liked the soap opera Santa Barbara then you would like this CD since it has alot of the romantic songs that were in the show for many of the characters.
My Favorite Year..........2003-10-09
This Is The Cd That Made Me A Michael Feinstein Fan!! I Had Bought His Two Previous Cds And Liked Them Very Much, But The First Time I Heard "My Favorite Year" I Was Hooked!! I Was In Tears By The End Of The Song & A Life Long Fan!!! Johnny Mandel's Arrangements Are Stunning And So Romantic!! One Of Michael's Very Best!!!!
Education's a gem.......2003-08-24
While this is not my favorite album in my collection, I keep coming back to "You're an Education", a song that Feinstein dug out of the vaults. He has a knack for finding great tunes that were either lost by time or simply forgotten.

Customer Reviews:
Capitol Records, Romantic songs by RODGERS and HART!! .......2007-06-26
I bought this CD along with some of the other CD Volumes put out by Capitol Records (such as: "CAPITOL's GREAT WOMEN of Song","Capitol Sings the Best Movie Songs", "Capitol Sings Irving Berlin", and "Capitol's Gentlemen of Song", etc....)
I have not been disappointed in any of the CAPITOL RECORDS compilations offered by Amazon.com.
All the songs are re-recorded nicely, and they sound very good---especially considering the age of some of the recordings.
Good Surprise.......2007-01-13
I expected a CD with old interpretations and/or historic ones. To my surprise, these old recordings are quite modern and good to the ears. I recommend this disk for the good memories it brings.
SOME GEMS.......2004-09-12
Like most collections of this type, this disc is not satisfying as a whole, but contains some gems if you are a RODGERS and HART fan.GORDON MACRAE's version of MY FUNNY VALENTINE is marvelous, and so is MARGARET WHITING's THOU SWELL,PEGGY LEE's THE LADY IS A TRAMP and DEAN MARTIN's IT'S EASY TO REMEMBER to name a few.Half of the cd is quite good.On the bad side are the vocal groups's version of songs that simply does not belong in the collection. It's a pity that they did not include FRANK SINATRA who was a CAPITOL singer from 1953 to 1962.So if you are a die hard fan of DICK and LARRY,it is worth buying especially at this low price.
I must disagree.......2001-10-31
I don't know where Lawrance M. Bernabo is coming from, but to say "there just are not as many great songs by this duo" as by other composers is absurd. Rodgers & Hart songs are consistenly musically superior to Rodgers & Hammerstein songs due simply to the fact the Hammerstein insisted on writing the lyrics first, thereby locking Rodgers into conventional tempi and limiting his creative options. I would put Rodgers & Hart on an equal plane with the Gershwins and Porter, and certainly with Berlin. Rodgers melodies shine on this album, and I highly recommend it.
Capitol's stars cover the songs of Rodgers & Hart.......2001-02-10
"Isn't It Romantic," the Capitol Sings collection of songs by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, is one of the lesser collections in the series by default simply because there just are not as many great songs by this duo in comparison to Rodgers & Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, or Cole Porter. In comparison to those other albums this one is one of the slowest in terms of the average tempo of the songs, which is to be expected when you have Mel Torme doing "Blue Moon," Dolores Gray singing "Isn't It Romantic," and Gordon MacRae covering "My Funny Valentine." But even Vic Damone's "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" sounds just too darn slow to my ear. These recordings span from the Dinning Sisters's 1943 version of "Where or When" to the 1967 cover of "It Never Entered My Mind" by Nancy Wilson. The standout tracks are Peggy Lee's jazzy "The Lady Is A Tramp," Jane Froman's "With A Song In My Heart," and Les Brown & His Band of Renown's version of Rodger's instrumental "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue," long a personal favorite of mine. As always there is a healthy mix of name artists such as Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughn and the Andrews Sisters with forgotten names such as Susan Barett, June Christy and the Dinning Sisters. The entire Capitol Sings series is a treat for those who have favorite musical composers and are not adverse to hearing slightly different versions of their greatest hits.

Although his commercial triumphs rivaled Frank Sinatra's during his late 1950s breakthrough, Johnny Mathis the pop singer could seem both overshadowed and confined by that early success in the years since. But this rich, often warmly surprising entry into the contemporary Pop Standard Reinterpretation Sweepstakes finds a singer more artistically focused than he's been in years, employing a voice that remains one for the ages. His definition of "standard" here is variously classic (the majestic title track and "Love is Here to Stay"), loose (a take on Jobim's lilting "Dindi" that's the perfect showcase for every delicate nook of the singer's vibrato-rich tenor) and left-field (Herman's Hermits' brit-invasion hit "A Kind of Hush" perfectly recast as prime Mathis ballad), but his performances flow with a deceptively effortless grace that's a tribute to his nearly half-century as a recording artist. Producer/arranger Jorge Callandrelli frames Mathis in spare orchestral backdrops that allow him ample space to soar, then nudge him gently into swing mode on "This Can't Be Love" and "Day By Day." The album closes with an evocative, de facto medley pairing a magically innocent, if unlikely cover of The Muppets' "Rainbow Connection" with Mathis' duet with Ray Charles on "Over the Raindbow," culled from the r&b legend's final album. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Album.......2006-02-27
He must be doing something right! It's amazing how well he has preserved the strength and quality of his voice throughout the years. Great album! Buy it! "The Rainbow Connection" and "Cottage For Sale" will bring you to tears.
By the way, Columbia must've changed the CD cover after the initial release of this album, because my copy's cover is different. Anyway, the new picture is better anyway.
Very nice,indeed !.......2005-12-21
I like J.M. a lot and currently I enjoy this beautiful album.
I have to admit that this one is not his best. It's a little monotonous.
I was expecting something a little more soulful and diverse from him...
I loved her old album 'BETTER TOGETHER',his duets album....Fantastic !The title track was sung by Johnny and Regina Belle...great track ! Wow ! So beautiful !
In this connection,I'd highly suggest to play "Isn't It Romantic : The Standards Album" along with a truly gorgeous jazz standards CD by the super-diva Regina Belle , "LAZY AFTERNOON" ,sublime, classy,a pure joy for your ears and heart.
It will be a wonderful ,perfect Christmas combo.
I do hope that Regina and Johnny will sing together again,SOON !!
I Love This Guy ! !.......2005-11-22
I cannot believe I am the first to review this CD!! I have listened to Johnny Mathis since I discovered him when I was 11 years old. I have never been to a concert of his, but I will be looking foward to the future. This man has a voice that doesnt quit, he improves with age. No he can't hit those high notes anymore but even so he now can get down to the lower notes. I cannot believe he is 70 years old. His voice is as young as he looks. If you are a JM fan then you will love this CD. I can't say enough...buy this!! No disapointment here.
Great Focus and Peerless Performance.......2005-08-29
You really have to ask yourself when listening to this outstanding cd;has anyone ever sustained continual excellence in performace more than Johnny Mathis? Some facts, he has been recording since he was 21 and recorded this gem at 69. Simply incredible. What he has done as an recording artist is to progressively learn to interpret his songs. There have been some great reviews here on Amazon about the selections, and I cannot add much more as to the individual selections. I can hardly wait for his 50th anniversary original cd that I hope comes out next year. It will have been worth the wait.
isnt it romantic.......2005-08-18
if you are looking for a romantic evening with an old standby like Mathis, this is the ticket. Sensetive singing of lush notes ensnare you into the mood of this C D. Worth it !!!!oh Yeah !!!!!!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Isn't It Romantic?.......2000-02-19
I purchased this album after hearing the title cut just once on the local jazz station here in Denver, it was that good. Ms. Bennett's voice is like cool silk, i.e., it feels good, but gets you all heated up. When she says "I'll be your wife" on the title track, you want her to be saying it to you. Her best songs on this album are the ones she wrote herself, particularly "Drifting" (the first few chords of the song are electric) and the title track, but "Feels Like a Heartbreak" and "You Never Saw Me Dance" are great cuts as well. The lyrics of these songs seem simple but are never trivial, and are always original. E.g., "Walk through life, suffer fools, handed junk, but fought for the jewels..." Buy the CD already, what are you waiting for?
Chris Bennett is fantastic!.......1999-09-10
"Less is More" is a promise fulfilled. I especially liked Chris's sensitive treatment of "Dindi" . . . she has a remarkable voice and ear for both her originals and covers! I highly recommend this CD!
Gorgeous, lush vocals! What a great C.D.!!.......1999-04-26
Chris Bennett has finally recorded the C.D. her fans from the Munich Machine days have been waiting for. Beautiful originals and standards utilizing the musical talents of Wayne Johnson, Eric Doney, and Bobbye Hall. The best C.D. I've heard all year! Romantic!
Very romantic! Contemporary jazz at it's finest!.......1999-02-14
Jazz Times gave this C.D. a rave review, and Bird compared Chris Bennett to Morgana King. Sultry vocals, beautiful, sparse arrangements. Dindi with Wayne Johnson and Bobbye Hall is a classic. Beautiful C.D.!!

Customer Reviews:
An absolutely fantastic compilation.......1998-09-19
I all ready have the Ella Fitzgerald version of Songbooks, and it's terrific, though there are songs on that compilation that I don't dig too well. This compilation more than makes up for it. Check out "My Funny Valentine" by Gordon MacRae ("Oklahoma!"). Absolutely FANTASTIC rendition. Lots of energy and charisma. This song is worth the price of the CD alone. The rest of the CD is fantastic, from the beatnick styled 'The Lady is a Tramp' to the beautiful harmony of the Four Freshmen in 'Spring is Here'. If you're a fan of Rodgers and Hart, you'll really love this set.
