5 out of 5 stars The good stuff that most fans remember.......2006-06-25

While not the anthology that would please persistent Petulaites, this is a good collection for those of us who remember when Petula Clark was a constant (and reassuring) presence on AM top 40 radio.

I was born in 1964, but I remember much of this from my early childhood, as Charleston SC's WTMA AM (now a talk station) played them often and our house had the radio on frequently duinrg the mid-late 1960s. This is some of the earliest music that I remember liking as a child.

Nostalgic baby boomers and early Gen-X-ers will feel a sense of warmth over "Downtown," "I Know a Place," "Don't Sleep in the Subway," "My Love, & "This Girl's In Love With You." Others should like it too. Her vocals on the latter are quite lovely.

4 out of 5 stars This is the only REAL collection of Pet's greatest hits.......2006-02-05

Whatever the sound quality of this collection, it appears to be the closest thing there is to a real collection of Pet's greatest hits. Many of Pet's fans on the American side of the Atlantic may not realize that Pet had 13 hits in Britain before Downtown, starting way back in 1954, 7 of which were top 10 hits, including her #1 hit "Sailor" in 1961. Unfortunately, almost all of her "greatest hits" packages ignore all these hits. But this package includes most of them. Do get one of her other anthologies for her later hits if you want the better sound quality for those songs, but if you really want her early British hits, I think you'll only find them on this collection. But you'll have to look elsewhere for her French hits. Maybe someday someone will put out a real greatest hits collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Swingin'-est Girl!.......2005-09-20

I can't get enough of Petula Clark's Greatest Hits! Do you remember the scene in "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", when Petula sings the school song with all her heart? The whole school turns and stares at her in awe. Who wouldn't? Her clear, strong, and expressive voice is just captivating. Her choice of songs is fabulous - cheerful, modern, exhilarating. When she sings "Who Am I?", I can see myself taking off from the ground to the clouds! We need a lot more of this kind of music!

5 out of 5 stars Petula Clark has a golden voice.......2005-08-30

I love the songs of Petula Clark and her Greatest Hits CD is wonderful. All the songs you remember from years ago sound the same and her voice is just darling. I highly recommend this CD if you love the sounds of Petula Clark. She has a beautiful voice and one that can rock you to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Collection.......2006-08-15

If your looking to start your journey with Petula, this collection is a great start, now this is a nice overview of Pet's career and then you can invest into getting other collections or her Lp's, what you get here is some of the best pop songs from the 60's and earlier 70's, and as one reviewer stated this set has been remastered nicely, the music and Petula's voice is so clear.

5 out of 5 stars Is Pet Clark Still Hip? "You Bet Your Sweet Bippy!".......2006-08-15

Petula Clark is pegged as the women's favorite. Her smash hit, "Downtown" captured all the exhuberance and independence of swinging London and swept it across the continent. Subjectively, she inspired the primitive video classic opening to 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show,' only with a different tune. The other songs are worth celebrating about, too, however. This male reviewer happens to be partial to her beautiful "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love" and "The Grass Is Always Greener". With her engaging vocals and an uplifting accompaniment on every song, her collection sounds like the best soundtrack to the best Broadway show. Still, it may be a generational draw, more than gender. For this reviewer can listen to "Sign of the Times" with its progessive jazz delivery and still feel hip. There isn't a bad song in the mix. The styles are also varied. "You'd Better Come Home" and "Kiss Me Goodbye" are fine pop standards. Then, "Colour My World" and "My Love" are big band punchy. Also, "This Song" is so Italian, she develops a slight accent. Dean Martin could have made this song his own. Then, there's the playful "Don't Sleep in the Subway," impressive for its statement of independence. The variety is impressive.

As stated in the liner notes, Rowan and Martin knew her as "Pet Clark," an affectionate shorthand for an able singer who still can bring so much joy in the world. Can she be considered relevant after four decades? "You bet your sweet bippy," one might say.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointing.......2003-10-04

After reading glowing reviews and hearing "Kiss Me Goodbye" (which is a great song) recently on the radio, I thought this would be fun to own and to listen to. I only was familiar with 3 or 4 of these songs and the others were new to me. Frankly the album was a little disappointing. I don't know what it is; maybe I was just never a big Petula Clark fan. The "Downtown" song is a classic and I have always enjoyed it, but it has been done by so many artists that it is overplayed. It's still best done by Petula and is the best thing about this album. All the songs are light and easy to listen to, but seem almost too superficial. Kind of like eating fast food vs. dining in a fine restaurant. Of course many of us like fast food now and then. I do have to say that the sound quality was very good and it's a clear sounding recording. Also a really cool thing they did was to print the CD so that it looks like an old 45 rpm record, so perhaps in time it will become somewhat of a collector's item. If you like this fluffy kind of music, it's worth owning, but if you prefer something with some substance and emotion, this is not it. Perhaps that's what I didn't like--a seeming lack of emotion and enthusiasm in the performances. Seems too predictable at times. Maybe it is because of the time period it came out of; perhaps my musical tastes have become more sophisticated since this was first released. Perhaps, but there are other songs from this time period that are just as much fluff as this is and yet are far more enjoyable listening. If you are a Pet Clark fan, you'll probably find this album delightful; if not, you might be left wondering why she was so wildly popular (the most successful female singer in British chart history, according to the liner notes.) Worth owing for historical reasons and a fun listen now and then, but it won't be a CD that I'll wear out listening to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the 1960's hits of great female pop singer.......2002-12-11

The pairing of Tony Hatch with Petula Clark was perhaps the best composer / female vocalist match of the 1960's. Included on this album are twelve of Petula's fifteen effervescent American top forty hits. Her vocals in these tracks are characterized by impeccable timing, finesse, and deceptive power. The #1 hit My Love, The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener and Colour My World are playful songs with silly lyrics that are elevated by lush musical arrangements and Pet's superb vocals. Don't Sleep In The Subway is a beautiful, buoyant, up-tempo song, and Downtown and I Know A Place are 60's classics. A weakness of this CD is the omission of three of Pet's top forty hits, The Cat In The Window, the beautiful, uplifting Don't Give Up, and Round Every Corner.

If you like one or two of Petula Clark's American hits, this is a good moderately priced CD to purchase. If you like several of her songs, you will get much more value and enjoyment from one of her multi-CD compilations which draws from her extensive, diversified catalogue of more than 1,000 recorded songs, such as Downtown To Sunset Blvd or Legendary which I believe are both slightly superior to the 2002 release, The Ultimate Collection.

5 out of 5 stars Classy 60s/70s pop.......2002-09-24

Petula Clark's excellent material lends a timeless quality to her work., and this collection, although not complete, demonstrates just how good pop music was in the sixties and seventies. For many years she ruled the charts with superb songs like Downtown, A Sign Of The Times, This Is My Song and Kiss Me Goodbye. My favorites include the inspiring Colour My World, I Couldn't Live Without Your Love and I Know A Place. What's missing is another one of her anthemic ballads, Round Every Corner, but that's not a major fault. If you like melodic, literate pop delivered by one of the best female vocalists of the era, you cannot go wrong with this brilliant album.
