    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Sings the movies..........2002-04-14

The only confusing thing about this album is the title. There are 2 CD's in the market titled "Shirley Bassey Sings The Movies". This one includes new recordings from some of the best songs from famous motion pictures.
Shirley pours all her grandeur and feelings in the songs but the orchestrations are just too unbearable. Shirley is a first rate performer and her voice is larger than life. The album sounds like a Low Budget recording, just like the sounds on "The Power Of Love" album. WHY?
I still prefer the other "Sings the Movies" collection where she sings classic theme songs, and of course "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever" are included.
The "Goldfinger" version on this record is simply less dynamic than the original.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Man, how Frank could sing 'em all !!!.......2007-06-22

Frank Sinatra fans will be delighted with this typically overlooked CD of songs he performed from the movies. The CD track set may run a little short at 30 minutes; but, then again, quality is better than quantity.

The CD starts off with "A Fella With An Umbrella" from the MGM movie musical entitled Easter Parade; and Franks sings this to perfection. The arrangement by Axel Stordahl makes great use of the horns. We then go on to hear Frank sing "Hush-A-Bye Island;" this sweet lullaby type of ballad boasts great lyrics by Harold Adamson. Love those chimes on "Hush-A-Bye Island!"

"Life Is So Peculiar" from the movie called Mr. Music has that big band feel to it that was still popular with Americans in the late 1940s; and Helen Carroll & The Swantones provide great background harmonizing to enhance the beauty of this number. As always, of course, Frank's vocals dominate--and he sings "Life Is So Peculiar" so well you'll never complain! In addition, "The Brooklyn Bridge" is a tune written by two greats: Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne. Frank delivers this passionately; and he never misses a note! The melody charms you with its beauty, too.

Other gems on this CD include "The Right Girl For Me" which opens with a well done musical flourish; the strings work well on "The Right Girl For Me." Frank bats this one straight out of the ballpark; and he makes it all sound so easy--but of course we know it really wasn't. Frank's natural talent really shines on "The Right Girl For Me." In addition, the final track, "Over The Rainbow" from The Wizard Of Oz, gets the royal treatment from Frank; and The Ken Lane Singers harmonize their extra verse so well to bolster Frank's interpretation of this classic well known ballad. Hooray for Harold Arlen, the man who wrote the musical arrangement for "Over The Rainbow!"

The liner notes are rather lacking; they only provide the song credits and the dates each song was recorded. I would have liked an essay; but this is a minor disappointment.

Frank could sing the classic ballads from ALL the musicals Hollywood ever produced; and if he had sung them all we would have stayed all night to listen! We are all better off for Frank sharing his talent with us. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Frank Sinatra; and fans of classic pop vocals from movie musicals will cherish this CD for ages to come.

                Thank you, Frank!!!

3 out of 5 stars vintage Frank sings Hollywood.......2007-02-27

This budget disc features ten classic tracks from Frank Sinatra, performing popular songs from the movie musicals. All of these selections are culled from Sinatra's early days with the M-G-M studios (1943-1950).

Amazon has not listed the full track-list for this CD, so here it is:

                1) "A Fella with an Umbrella" (from "Easter Parade") (rec. 1948)
                2) "Hush-a-Bye Island" (from "Smash Up") (rec. 1946)
                3) "Life is So Peculiar" (from "Mr Music") (rec. 1950) (with Helen Carroll and The Swantones)
                4) "The Brooklyn Bridge" (from "It Happened in Brooklyn") (rec. 1946)
                5) "But Beautiful" (from "Road to Rio") (rec. 1947)
                6) "If I Steal a Kiss" (from "The Kissing Bandit") (rec. 1947)
                7) "The Music Stopped" (from "Higher and Higher") (rec. 1943) (with the Bobby Tucker Singers)
                8) "I Begged Her" (from "Anchors Aweigh") (rec. 1944) (with Dave Mann)
                9) "The Right Girl for Me" (from "Take Me Out to the Ballgame") (rec. 1949)
                10) "Over the Rainbow" (from "The Wizard of Oz") (rec. 1945) (with the Ken Lane Singers)

For Frank Sinatra fans, I'd recommend this disc highly, especially those who loved his days with M-G-M.
