Like that of many artists who came of age in the '80s, Stan Ridgway's career has often been unfairly haunted by an endless groove of MTV overexposure that's turned perceptions of his music into something akin to a skipping record. Indeed, the veteran L.A. singer-songwriter once groused he'd likely spend his twilight years onstage in a newly liberated Havana casino lounge, crooning "Mexican Radio" to blue-haired former new wavettes. But this savory trove of songs ranks with Black Diamond as one of the best albums Ridgway has recorded since his muscular reemergence as an indie artist in the mid-'90s. Mining the same electro-acoustic vein as Anatomy, Ridgway has refined his nervous balance of traditional folk-blues and ironic-modernist instincts even further here, shrewdly casting the material in a three-act dramatic structure that sharpens its dramatic focus. The usual suspects of Stan's compelling musique noir herein feature seedy, if oddly sympathetic miscreants (the wry toe-tapper "Wake Up Sally [The Cops Are Here]," "Running with the Carnival"), a familiar musician all too wise to both his past and future ("That Big 5-O," "Talkin' Wall of Voodoo Blues"), and a blue-collar warehouse worker moving mysterious cargo Middle Eastward (the dour "Afghan Forklift"). His balladeer instincts may draw him to personal interludes both bittersweet ("Our Manhattan Moment") and elegiac ("Into the Sun," "My Rose Marie"), but it's when Ridgway fuses his Johnny Cash/Ernie Ford/Mose Allison fetishes with his own compelling personal ethos (the haunting, harmonica-seasoned "God Sleeps in a Caboose," a headline-timely, appropriately creeped-out cover of Allison's "Monsters of the Id") that Ridgway again confirms his status as one of America's most consistently original songwriters and performers. --Jerry McCulley

McCABES #9 - STAN RIDGWAY Sun May 6th, 2007.......2007-05-07
Ex-Wall of Voodoo leadman turned Singer-Songwriter extraordinare Stan Ridgway ROCKED McCabe's Guitar Shop with his blend of alt. roots-rock music and more on Sunday, May 6th, 2007. It was by far to me the most 'electric' performance at McCabe's and his 'band' was simply electrifying as well. His guitarist was wired, so was his pianist-organist and violinist.. well, let's add the drummer as well (Five folks on the small McCabes' stage was a sight to see) Being my first time to a Ridgway concert, I was pleasantly surprised at his twisted humor in between sets (then again, many of his songs are that way as well) It made me at times go to the point of laughing so loud I would had to leave. His music from 'Snakebite' was as wild as the music and wicked bantor on stage - He played "Wake Up Sally (The Cops are here)" and I was laughing to the point of tears (he made strange facial movements on stage while performing) "King For A Day" Was his tribute to the non-sense we call the local modern-day televised car chase (a wild wide in a stolen car that ends up on local TV with the car smashing into the side of a house (Sounds familiar??) and "Running With The Carnival" (Those sound effects are still ringing in my ears) - I have to say the 90 minutes went VERY quick and before we knew, he was back for the encore...He did "Beneath The Green Tree" to make some 'stiff point' - The hightlight for me was when he did that song from 25 years ago that we all know all too well from his 'Wall of Voodoo' days "Mexican Radio" - The house went down at the end of the song with Stan raising his guitar screaming "25 years - I'm branded - damn this song --- I'm branded" (A clue here, folks??) Most folks out there know Stan just for that song, I can see why he feels a bit differently - For true music lovers we love Stan for his quality SOLO stuff that stand out. For those who just have 'Wall of Voodoo's greatest hits' and are reading this, please get this album and do yourself a favor. Overall, one of the best concerts I've EVER experienced at McCabe's and I got very lucky & met Stan after the concert (with Sharpie in hand) and..he was just as funny after the show (I guess that's his personality - that's cool..he's kinda like me) I also spoke to his guitarist Mike as well for a bit before Stan came down. I will most certainly see him when he comes back - you should too. It's a concert you won't forget =.) Peace - Joe "Bear"
Stan's got a lot of great ideas.........2006-04-21
and this collection shows just what an inventive, brilliant, writer he is.
That said, a lot of the songs on this album bump into his limitations as a vocalist. While his lyrics and musical puns make me laugh, some of his vocalizations make me wince.
A quirky masterpiece.......2005-10-07
Stan Ridway's music almost defies description. Using a variety of instruments (including a glockenspiel, mellotron and a 2-string jawbone!)Ridgway and his group of players has created a wonderful bit of Americana. Tales of escaping criminals bedeviled by cops and a noisy dog, a crack smoking daddy on a rampage, and life in a carnival are given inventive musical settings that really have no equivalent. If you want to know what happened to Wall of Voodoo from Ridgway's perspective, "Talkin' Wall of Voodoo Blues Part I" gives you an interesting take on the situation and you follow that with "My Rose Marie" that sounds so authentic you'd swear it was Civil War balled as opposed to a Ridgway original. I've always liked Ridgway's solo stuff, but I feel this one is where all his strengths as an artist come together.
Grade: Incomplete -- needs work.......2005-08-07
Listening to this record is a bit frustrating for me. Some of it calls to mind the best of Stan's past work, namely his albums Partyball and Anatomy. Yes, there are some fugitive songs here. Stan gravitates toward the dark underbelly of society for his subject matter. Yet, somehow this batch of miscreants seems a little more conventional, a little more sane than his usual cast of characters. Sadly, that makes them less interesting.
Into The Sun is a fine start -- about new beginnings. The music, the soaring synths and yearning in Stan's voice, delivers the goods. Other examples of atmospheric production that does justice to the songs: Monsters Of The Id, Our Manhattan Moment, maybe even Hollywood Ending.
But the carnival atmosphere of Running With The Carnival is a bit too predictable.
Talkin Wall Of Voodoo Blues is a chance for Stan to get some things off his chest about the old band, and how they all got screwed by the record business. The song itself is a bit monotonous, and lyrically not clever at all. "We made a lot of noise/For all the girls and boys/It was 1977/Now two are gone to heaven." Ahhhh, you get the picture. A lot of the rhymes on this record are a little forced, and often the words don't quite flow smoothly with the melody.
Wake Up Sally -- too sing song-y.
My Rose Marie is unusually sentimental for Stan Ridgway -- about a veteran who still pines for the gal he left behind when he went to war many years past. I thought the vocals on this song sounded a little too strained. A lighter touch was needed -- something like Stan's vocals on Partyball's Right Through You. And the synthesized orchestrations gave only a suggestion of the grandeur this song could have with acoustic instruments.
With tweaking of the lyrics, a bit of restraint on some of the cheap-sounding keyboards, more work on vocal phrasing and tone, sophisticated programming on the rhythm tracks, and you'd have a record that's a more complete artistic statement and less a glorified demo tape. That is how most of these songs strike me -- just shy of what's needed.
Other fans have obviously been wowed by the performaces on Snakebite. Perhaps they focused on some quality that I missed. I hear a lot of potential, but I can't quite give this record a passing grade. Songs: Need editing. Arrangements: Too simple. Sound: Production a bit primitive -- expand and enhance. I won't beat this to death. Amazon.com is offering a free download of Talkin Wall Of Voodo Blues. Get it. Compare it to with anything on Partyball, and you'll see what I'm complaining about.
Stan's Excellent Experimentation .......2005-06-04
Since the first analog rhythm machines combined with the frenetic wall of voodoo to this latest excellent wonderbug Blacktop Ballads and Fugitive songs Stan is always experimenting in creating wonderful songs that are rich with literary and artistic tradition while at the same time warm and human.
If Stan Ridgway was not a songwriter he'd be a poet laureate, or great American novelist. His work is always narrative, but like a roadtrip, you never know where the story will take you.
In this release Stan seems to spread himself out geographically. This latest release takes in the Americana.

My favorite Raveonettes cd.......2006-09-26
I first discovered The Raveonettes at a local book store a few years ago. I listened to a few songs off the cd and was immediately hooked on the music. Normally I am not into that garage rock sound and I like my music darker and more aggressive. The Raveonettes certainlly has that of The Jesus and Mary Chain sound going for them with the distorted guitars. It would be hard not to hear the comparisons to The Jesus and Mary Chain. Never had I heard songs as melodic as what I heard on "The Chain Gang of Love". The infectious melodies reminded me of Buddy Holly and The Ronettes. There isn't one song on the album that I did not like. For me this is my favorite Raveonettes cd because this is what got me into the band.
(three and a half stars) not as consistent as "Whip it on".......2006-04-02
Whereas in their first album, the Danish duo known as the Raveonettes combined the reverb sound of early Jesus and Mary Chain with surf music, "Chain Gang of Love" expanded the Raveonettes sound by emulating the playful side of Motown, as well as some fifties music -- a trend they would continue with the similar "Pretty in Black"). Still using their basic formula of pretty much 3 chorded songs, "Chain Gang of Love" has a happier sound than the debut E.P. "Whip it On," because now it's in the key of B-Major instead of B-Minor. While I liked the majority of the "Whip it On" songs, on this album I only like some of them, which accounts for my lower rating (I awarded "Whip" four and a half stars).
Put simply, I greatly prefer the Raveonettes upbeat tracks over the slower ones. In "Chain Gang of Love," this translates to my liking four songs: "That Great Love Sound," "Let's Rave On," "Heartbreak Stroll" and "New York Was Great." Then rest, to me, is filler, not bad, but still filler. Nevertheless the Raveonettes, at their best, are a joy to listen to, almost like a band you would love to hear at a big college Frat party. And, Sharin Foo (half of the duo), well, there's nothing wrong with that!
Trying to Hard to be Retro.......2006-03-05
This is a rather disconcerting mix of relatively decent sixties sound pieces and absolutely horrid songs that wouldn't make it in any era or style. There is considerable background noise on a number of songs, I think intentional. It reminds me of the hiss you get on a truly old vinyl album that has not been well cared for. Retro is good, but going retro that makes use of current sound technology is better.
Lame, Self-Absorbed, Untalented Poseurs.......2005-09-20
So I guess Sune Rose Wagner is mostly to blame for this stuff. The girl, Sharin Foo, would appear to be just for looks. The CD is completely unlistenable. It's going to the used CD store.
Have A Trip!.......2005-07-18
The Raveonettes are an icon of sorts. While there are other bands out there with this sound, The Raveonettes will always be one of a kind.
With The Chain Gang Of Love, we are treated to some very laid back yet poppy music. Under strict and odd rules, this entire album is in the key of B flat. Why? Psh, I have no idea! When you add this little strange fact, the limited diversity in the drums (the drumming is very primitive on this album), and a sense of bubble-gum pop and a trippy and equally catchy feeling to every song, you're going to end up with a CD that "sounds the same" throughout most of it's tracks. Is that a bad thing? I can be -- just not in this case. The Raveonettes have come up with a formula here that has supported their career from the start and probably will continue until they retire. And this forumla is worth hearing in these 13 songs, even if they are similar. Because good music never gets old!
As for these particular songs...well, they're just plain wonderful! The guitar parts consist mostly of jangly, open-chords ringing out with a fuzz effect that tickles your ears like a good foamy root beer would tickle your lips. The bass also takes on a bit of a fuzzy approach, although remaining sweet and melodically adaptive to the rest of the instruments. The drums, as I mentioned before, are extremely simplified, yet deliver the beats necessary to bring home these pop tunes of greatness. But the greatness doesn't stop there! The vocal work is undeniably the best part of the music. A male and female sing most of the lyrics together with amazing harmony. They take on an almost lullaby feel with their sweet'n'soft vocalizing. I believe there is also a keyboardist of some type (or possibly just some computer editing) that adds in some strange yet pleasant noises to accompany this array of musical goodness.
And I must not forget the other attracting point to this CD -- it's one hell of a soundtrack to get high to (if you're into that sort of thing). Still, even if you don't use substances to enhance your experience, The Chain Gang Of Love should be enough by itself to trip you out and bring your soul into a place of musical bliss. If you're into the softer side of rock, then this is a must-buy.

Better than the first.......2006-04-29
Since the last State Property record, a new member is to be found, Peedi Crakk, and each and all of the other seven rappers have upgraded their dexterities. They all sound so self-assured and technically good on this album. It's better than the first joint.
This is another Roc-A-Fella release without production by Just Blaze or Kanye West, but that doesn't really matter. The point isn't to make hits, but good hip-hop. The rappers intensity makes you forget the production at times, but every beat are special adjusted to this gang. Behind the boards we find Bink, Alchemist, D. Sot and Black Key. Everything is tight from the beginning to the end. "It's On" with Beanie Sigel and Jay-Z are a pleasure for your ears. "Blow" with Oschino, Sparks, Young Chris and Twista is a roller coaster of flows, even though none of them could compete with Twista. Oschino even has a solo joint, "Been Down Too Long", which is surprisingly good. Young Chris' partner Neef also get to show his talent on songs like "Can't Stop, Won't Stop" and "State Prop (You Know Us)".
The Chain Gang Vol. 2 should be enjoyed in it's completeness. Everything hits like a bullet, with the exception of the unnecessary remake of BDP's "Criminal Minded" ("Criminal Background"). Be prepared for gangsta lyrics. On this they take even further than on the first State Property record. They just keep it real, and it sounds refreshing without gimmicks. 73 minutes might just be too much, but when the rappers are as dedicated as this, it's well worth it.
4.5 star 2nd album from State Property.......2005-10-30
18 months after their debut group album, The State Prop boyz are back with another 4.5 star solid album, I like this one slightly less but it's still a very good album. This time the whole group is more represented, Neef is on more then 1 song, Peedi Crakk is introduced, and a few people who aren't in State Prop drop some verses as well. More songs then the 1st album with 17 on here, 1 I skip (which is the single from the album, much like the debut SP album single, it's my least favorite on here), 1 classic, 2 almost classic songs, 3 ok ones, and the rest are good or great songs. Production is good once again. Chad Hamilton does 5 songs, Boola and Black Key each do 2, and Darrell Branch, D-Dot, Bink One, Alchemist, Sean Francis, Henny Loc, Ruggedness, and Warren Campbell all so 1 song. A must have rap album for fans of hardcore hip-hop.

B Sig Fred Krugger ni**as.......2004-12-20
This album was pretty good. I really wasn't expecting much when I initially purchased the album about a year ago, but I was VERY impressed. The production was there, and the lyrics were worthy of some of the very ill beats. Young Hov blessed the track " It's on " where him and Beanie just rip it up back and forth. Other stand out tracks are : Want me back, B.L.O.W, and Rollin down the freeway. This album is definitely worth the purchase.

I believe that word play and sounds are important for youngsters mental development so purchased this CD which is great at playing with words. My son enjoys saying/singing the words on this CD. He really enjoys "I'm going on a Huka Lau" and trying to say "Flea Fly Flow Mosquito" several times fast. Katherine Dines' melodious voice and clear pronunciation comes through strongly on this CD.
GET THIS CD!!!.......2004-07-09
My 13 month old is absolutely mesmerized by the music on this CD! All I have to do is put the CD on in his room, and he will sit through the entire thing while playing quietly and staring up at the CD player. It's incredible! AND, I've noticed him trying to make the sounds and "singing along". I cannot tell you how much I love this CD! The songs are contagious!! Watch out or you'll end up singing them all day. Get this CD!

Ridiculous.......2006-08-22
the set price of this goes completly against the whole idea of this series. it was meant to be an affordable method collecting the best sides of singles on one record. aside from the price it's still an excellent compilation.

Where the White Stripes learned how.......2006-03-17
This band was/is awesome. I saw them live, and could not believe that just two guys could make that wall of sound! I watched in amazement as Bryan played both rhythm and lead at the same time! Johnny drummed like a man possessed! The technique! The feeling in your gut! They mastered just about every type of music- blues, rock, country, folk, grunge(before grunge even existed), depending on the song. But their personal style was completely of their own making. This album has been stuck in my head since the first time I heard it in early 1988. Every single song is a gem. Bittersweet, raw, and thought provoking, this remains one of the best albums EVER. (and GREAT for road trips, especially thru the southwest..) I was happy to see this reissue, and the added tracks (which include some previously unreleased material) really are a delight. This is where the White Stripes got it from. I was happy to see that after the demise of House of Freaks that both Bryan and Johnny turned up with Steve Wynn in Gutterball. I am so saddened that Bryan and his family are gone. It is heartbreaking and senseless. The world has lost more than words can depict.
Darkness & Light: An Indispensable Gem.......2006-01-10
Precis:
Solid and uncompromised rock. Relentlessly raw. No disposable tracks. Louder than you think you need, smarter than you think you are. Unlike any "genre" rock you've absorbed before. A real voice, a matchless passion. Turn it up and in several seconds you'll have to admit you've found something brutally new.
Essay:
How thin and insufficient that taxonomic shorthand seems now, bandied so blithely about by a press that just a fortnight ago knew nothing of the work this half-doomed duo was destined to give us: Rocker. Indie Rocker. Power Pop. Progenitor of the White Stripes. That last one actually not a bad observation, a welcome reminder of the organic continuum that even the most original of rock acts swims within.
Chords drive, skins pound, hooks infect. Because whatever else they were, and they were many things, House of Freaks were at bottom and top a rock and roll band, and a blistering one at that. But one must seriously remember the synth-drenched and slick-sheened production value heyday of the 1980s to truly appreciate how wildly out of nowhere this record sounded when we slit the shrink-wrap and spun it under the needle that loud first time. Damn.
Back then of course the gold standard of less-than-a-quorum mega-noise was Rush, who nevertheless had the good sense to incorporate a bassist. But these House of Freaks freaks, no, they didn't even bother with session men: track after track, the record rolls on with just the lonely two of them making such an extravagant racket in what sounds like the biggest darkness a Gibson and Zildjian ever did try to conquer. Johnny's stampeding tympani kicks up sparks like the hearts of a dozen flint hummingbirds while Bryan etches jagged signatures from the raw blackness of the vinyl and the silence both, letting the echoing residue cascade and fade at the same time like copperhead scales shed from the stiff coiled asps of his E and G strings.
One could now and should wax on about Bryan's lyrics. But that would take an English major, so I'll just open the floor to whoever she is. Come on, you, and do him justice. His work is worth it.
One of my all time favorites.......2006-01-07
This CD has always been one of my all time favorite CDs. It's great to see it reissued. For a long time I had the original CD in my car, until I realized if someone stole my car stereo I would be more upset about losing this CD than the stereo itself. (since at the time it was out of print)
Sadly, Bryan and his family were tragially taken from us on New Year's day. Even so, he has left us all with a great collection of music to remember him by. As a song on Cakewalk says, We will remember him well.
This is my favorite of the HOF CD's, but I would recommend getting their other CDs as well.
A Tragic Death.......2006-01-04
Tragically, my fried Bryan Harvey, his wife Kathrn, and their two young daughters were murdered on New Year's Day, 2006, in Richmond, Virginia.

Ratsluggers unite!.......2003-11-17
Totally maximist 40-deuce rock from these uncrowned Kings of NYC. The sound lies somewhere within an axis mapped out by early Pere Ubu, Vertical Slit, and Roky Erikson's Blieb Alien--you know that rock 'n' roll Bermuda Triangle where only the most intrepid dare to sail. PERFUMED is a hodgepodge of recordings from throughout Chain Gang's long and shambling "career", dating back to 1976 with a warm and raw version of "That's How Strong My Love Is" and moving up through various late 80's sessions. Along the way, you get to hear all their rare, late 70's 7" cuts (including the infamous "Son of Sam", which was released prior to the capture of B. Berkowitz), as well as a bunch of cool live tunes from gigs at clubs you never went to. My fave cut is "O.T.B.", a long-gone slopwave disco number that'll shake the pants off of anyone who hustles up next to it. But really, the whole glorious mess is worthy of your attention. And it's also a true testimonial to the creative energy of a breed of once-flourishing Manhattan underclass who, by now, have been pretty much priced out of the whole flippin' nation. Listen up to hear how the other half lived.
