Dance Album

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
In his thirty-plus year career, Engelbert Humperdinck has racked up sales in excess of 130 million records, including 64 gold and 23 platinum records. The Dance Album features six of Engelbert's greatest hits ("Release Me," "After The Lovin?," "The Last Waltz," "Quando, Quando, Quando," "A Man Without Love" and "Spanish Eyes"), along with four new original songs written by Interhit's Chris Cox, Barry Harris and Jeff Johnson ("Am I The Lover?" "Mano a Mano," "This Night," "Gotta Get Release" and "When Love Finds Your Heart"). Also featured are background vocals from well-known dance divas Abigail (recently #1 on the Billboard Dance Chart), Thea Austin (of Snap! Fame) and Shawn Christopher.

A showcase for both the talents of Engelbert and Thunderpuss, The Dance Album ranges from HiNRG to Pop/Dance to Latin House to Commercial House to R&B Hip Hop. A special treat on the album is the inclusion of two Spanish dance mixes - the percolating Latin house mix of "Cuando, Cuando, Cuando" and the "Spanglish" mix of "Spanish Eyes." In the end, the one thread running through this remarkably contemporary album in the unmistakable voice of Engelbert Humperdinck which the London Times once called "the premiere voice of the century." With the release of The Dance Album, the "King of Romance" becomes the "King of Dance!" --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars "Totally Gnarly" or "Gag me with a Spoon"?.......2007-05-31

Some of the greatest moments of my life were in high school!! The mid 80's when I was carefree and lived life unfettered! No bills, no boss, no cares! Just me and my pastel suits and thin leather ties and full head of hair....(Man, I actually WORE those suits?!?!)
Fond nostalgia aside, the whole 'retro' thing is forcing the 80's upon us once again and you might as well admit that you were one of the characters from The Breakfast Club! (Mmmmmm....Ally Sheedy.)
Dropping these discs into my player and hitting shuffle just makes it all come flooding back!
But to tell a shameful truth? I really HAD to buy this set because of "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner and Garcia and "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts. I've never seen these songs anywhere else!
I'm not sure I even looked at the other songs before my credit card was being swiped by the good folks at Amazon!!
So, yeah, again, I bought on impulse but I damn sure don't regret it!! In fact, I'd suggest we embrace the "ME, ME, ME" decade just once more and "BUY, BUY, BUY" this set.
If you went to high school in the 80's like I did, simply put, this will bring back some great memories.
(Unless, of course, your high school years sucked. To which, I say, "That's too bad. I'm sorry for you.")
Either way, just admit that the 80's were a great time for music and pastel suits and thin leather ties.........(chicks dig the thin tie still, right? Right? Anybody? Can I get a witness?)
Where's Don Johnson when I need him?
Oh, here he is....Disc 6, Song 19!

4 out of 5 stars Time Warp.......2007-05-23

I guess only someone who was a teen or 20something could really appreciate
this set. The 80s were my high school and college years and I was
certainly guilty of listening to the radio .... This set is awesome and
is really made indispensable with the booklet. My only gripe lies with
the artists that were huge in the 80s, but evidently could not be licensed
for this set....Notably U2, REM, Hoodoo Gurus, Wall of Voodoo, etc

3 out of 5 stars Shut up!.......2007-03-04

Like, for sure, half of it is like totally major gross-out, but the other half is like bitchin! Just shut up already and buy it!

2 out of 5 stars missing tracks.......2007-02-26

lots of great 80's music available in these cds, but missing one of the greatest groups of the decade...Wham!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD Set!.......2007-01-18

I purchased this set for my 13 year old daughter. It seems the 80's are making a big comeback. She loves it! I love it, too!! It has all the most popular songs from the 80's plus a few you do not hear anywhere now. It's great! It brings back a lot of memories, GOOD TIMES!!

Through the course of Como Ama Una Mujer, the first full-blown collection of Spanish-language tunes from multicultural diva Jennifer Lopez, we keep waiting for it to happen. A sweltering, hands-in-the-air dance anthem--the kind that made Lopez a superstar. Alas, the club beats never materialize: not even a soul-diva shimmy. The closest Lopez comes to is midtempo first single "Que Hiciste." (Seek out the pulsing, reggaeton-flavored remix for maximum dance floor fabulousness.) What we get here is a surprisingly solid collection of elegant ballads and rock-flavored tunes that showcase new vocal strengths and surprising lyrical maturity. Producers Marc Anthony, Estefano and Julio Reyes give Lopez the gloss without overpowing her, a key element to the disc's success. La Lopez recycles one track from 2005's Rebirth, "(Can't Believe) This Is Me," which pops up here as the superior "Porque te Marchas." The disc's second half is a sweeping, often gorgeous, stream of romantic consciousness, starting with the lovely "Tu" and gliding through the gently chugging "Sola." And the beautiful closing track "Adios" is a standout, pairing Lopez's lilting vocals with a gentle string arrangement and a rousing chorus of voices. A sterling achievement from a diva whose talent is just beginning to blossom. --Joey Guerra

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terribly Disappointed.......2007-06-27

Though her voice is good; she should stick to Pop music. Too many ballads and the soul searching lyrics. Lyrics not appropriate for her. She sings about sadness and disappointment when we all know her life is so different. The songs did not match her or what she represents to Latinos and women. Jennifer should continue to do Pop music and upbeat tempos and forget about the torch songs of pain and abandonment. Not a good match. What were her producers thinking. Hello!!!! Wasted my money. I never listen to it again.

1 out of 5 stars Mi opinion, escucha este CD antes de comprarlo!.......2007-06-21

Empiezo en comentar que cuando salio este CD a la venta pense que con el apoyo de Marc Anthony este proyecto iba a ser un exito. Desgraciadamente me equivoque.

3 out of 5 stars 1 hit song.......2007-06-15

there is only 1 hit, the others are tolerable. spanish is good, but her voice is a little shakey on ballads

5 out of 5 stars best ever from jennifer lopez.......2007-06-05

I can hardly wait for the next all spanish cd from jennifer lopez - she could be the female luis miguel! it is just beautiful - especially "tu" and "por arriesgarnos". what took her so long to do this?

5 out of 5 stars Como Ama Una Mjuer Review.......2007-06-02

To be honest with you, I did not like her English songs. She sings better in Spanish. I was impressed to hear that all her songs on the CD "Como Ama Una Mujer" were all knock-outs. I heard her husband Marc Anthony, in the back ground. I know his voice anywhere, and it sounded terrific. She can go a long way if she continue singing her songs in Spanish, even if she mixes a little bi-lingual It would be even better. I love them both and God has bless them together. And this CD I feel that it was the root of there love for each other and a new beginning. No words can express how I feel about them and their songs.

Most of the tracks on the first disc alone warrant purchasing it at the price offered...however, the second two discs could've been whittled-down to a few tracks that could've replaced some of the softer offerings on Disc One and it would've been one monster CD...still, the wheat can be burned from the chaff on one's mp3/I-Pod, I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-05-14

Any 80's music lover will be happy to have this collection! The selection is perfect. I just love it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-01-12

Another 80's cd that I didn't let slip by. You will also love it, great value.

1 out of 5 stars What a Slow Bore!.......2007-01-11

Of this three disk set, I would say that maybe five songs were worth listening to and even remembered. The rest were slow and so boring. I don't even remember them form the eighties.
If you are looking for an eighties cd. DON"T buy this one. THERE HAS TO BE better ones out there than this one.

5 out of 5 stars We are thrilled!.......2007-01-04

This boxed set is the greatest! I am really enjoying all of it! Great songs.... I love 80's music and this is a great mix!

Album Description

The artist who will forever be known as Prince-and could fittingly be known as "The Artist"-is one of the most brilliant, versatile and influential musical forces of his, or any, time. Prince took R&B and regally marched it into genre-blurring horizons previously unknown, fusing rock, funk, soul, psychedelia, pop, and singer-songwriter aesthetics into a sound that was mind-bending and booty-shaking. Sensual, literate, explosive, and groundbreaking, his artistry never stopped evolving and the hits and acclaim never stopped coming. His adventurous reinventions, bold experimentation, stellar instrumental and composing skills and genius for showmanship have placed him high in the pantheon of all-time superstars. "Unique" doesn't begin to describe his royal powers, showcased herein on the first-ever two-disc compilation of his masterful Warner Bros. years.

3 out of 5 stars His royal badness.......2007-03-13

Before all the negative votes start piling up, let it be known that I come to praise Prince, not to bury him.

While I am perfectly happy to have a lot of these songs on one disc, I am also disappointed that a few songs are missing. Add to that I really don't care about "rare dance mixes" (yawnnnnnnn), then I am the rare listener to have issues with the second disc. I would have been much happier with "Kiss," "Pop Life" and "Raspberry Beret" in their album versions, instead we are forced to listen to dopey raps and cornball dialogue. Hardly the stuff of genius, even if I believe Prince to be one.

I am also perfectly happy to get a single disc with the cream of doff albums like "Parade" or "LoveSexy." Prince had his run of unbeatabilty that lasted up to "Purple Rain." But after that, even for a boy-wonder, things got spotty. That said, I do wish the "Batman" stuff was here, and maybe he'd have switched "Nothing Compares 2U" with "AnotherLoverHoleInYourHead." These being my personal quibbles, of course.

Prince was the soul machine of the 80's...an unstoppable force of nature that packed dancefloors all while charting his own course. He took risks and made them pay off (or not, if you think about the "Under The Cherry Moon" movie). But he played guitar like a Hendrix and funked like James Brown with an admitted Joni Mitchell fixation. What is not to love? The three star rating is for the clumsily compiled songs here, not for the merit of the music.

Now when are we getting the classic albums remastered?

1 out of 5 stars No "Ultimate" compilation at all! Extended versions are the worst ever!.......2007-03-06

I got this album with the idea of getting what I thought was a reasonable good compilation of Prince's greatest hits. Well... CD 1 is okay... But... What about CD 2? The 'Extended' and 'Dance Mix' versions of "Little Red Corvette", "Rapsberry Beret", "Let's Go Crazy" and "Kiss" REALLY SUCK! Why to avoid the excellent, original versions? The people at Rhino made a really bad choice on issuing this awful compilation and titling it as "ULTIMATE"!!
I would prefer to return this awful "Ultimate" compilation, get my money back and try buying Prince albums individually!!

5 out of 5 stars The Super Bowl Is At Halftime.......2007-02-05

In the hours leading to the Super Bowl, my prediction for the point in the show that will exceed the hype is halftime when Prince takes to the stage.

He was the icon of the music industry back in the day as a songwriter, producer and performer; his creative genius was that of Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix, Sly Stone, George Clinton & Phil Spector.

The two CDs feature 28 tracks, with 11 remixes on the second CD, including Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, Kiss - and my favorite track - Pop Life. The original cuts on the first CD are classics; my highlights are I Wanna Be Your Lover, Controversy, 1999, I Would Die 4 U and Purple Rain.

This is truly an ultimate Prince collection and shows him at the top of his game with the major record label. Now if only the football surrounding the concert will be just a little entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate!!!.......2007-02-01

When we say Ultimate, It is done by a long process of things. This CD is no exception to the case. Warner music has done it again. Giving us a great selection of one of it all time hottest and most versatile artist. This retrospective CD is a great introduction of how really talented Prince is. Not only do you get the most popular, but a bonus CD of some long awaited Extended and rare dance hit collectables. The only downside to this is that there are still many tracks unavalible. Like for example*(Anotherloverholenyohead Extended version), Love or Money (B side of "kiss" single), Girl (Long version), Sexy Dancer(Dance mix), Erotic City(Dance Mix), America (Dance mix) and the list goes on and on. Nevertheless, it is still a great selection of tunes to own. Although, I wouldn't be too surprised to see Ultimate Prince 2 in the near future.

Amazon.com essential recording

Prince's fifth album came right before the lascivious multi-instrumentalist became a huge star with his 1984 film and soundtrack, Purple Rain. But Prince had already proved himself to be the most audacious talent to emerge in the 1980s, and 1999, the bulk of which features Prince on all the instruments, reflects the dance-rock styles that he also brought to the acts he produced, particularly the Time. Prince knows how to run a one-man-band individual instruments don't blend together as much as they compete in a funky showdown which allows tracks like "Automatic," "D.M.S.R.," and "Delirious" to sustain their long playing times. But the album's two enduring hits, "1999" and "Little Red Corvette," outshine the rest, and define the essential roles that rock and funk play in Prince's music. "Little Red Corvette" is a sexy song about a car, which would have been enough to make it a terrific rock song even if it didn't also boast an infectious chorus and a great guitar part. As for "1999," count on it being the dance song of the millennial year. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars 1999... Legacy cemented.......2007-07-13

1999 is an album for the ages. Bumping funk and creative and fun tracks like 1999, Little Red Corvette, and my personal favorite D.M.S.R. make this album probably one of the 80's top 5 albums and one of musics top 40 albums of all time.

Prince unlike Michael Jackson has not struggled to reinvent himself, because Prince has been constantly experimenting with new sounds and new ways to create his masterpieces.

It is hard to believe that 1999 preceded Purple Rain, but did an incredible job teasing the world's appetite for more of the "Purple One"

This is a must have for any R&B collection and any run of the mill Prince fan!

Great Album, that should live in the history books of music for decades to come!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Genius!.......2007-05-13

This is one of my all time favorite albums/CDs EVER! It was so far ahead of its time, as is usually the case with Prince's music. I listen to this every day while driving in to work, sometimes while doing homework, or cleaning house. Regardless of what I am doing, as soon as "1999" starts I am ready to take on anything.

I adore Prince and admire him for his God-given musical talent and his self-confidence. There is something to be said for a person who can write a number one hit overnight AND play all of the instruments on that number one hit (When Doves Cry from the Purple Rain CD). Not only is he one of the most forward-thinking musicians of all time, he is, without question, THE most talented musician in pop history. He is also the sexiest musician I have ever seen. I thought that when I saw him in concert in 1986 in England, in the movies Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon and still think it today, over 20 years later, when he performed the half-time show for Superbowl XLI. Even now, in my 40s, when I watch his movies I get chills just listening to him sing and scream. To meet him would be a 20+ year dream come true for me.

5 out of 5 stars Dance, Music, Sex, Romance.......2007-01-28

As I slowly put the cold cd into the overly large boombox that occupys a large portion of my room, my disco ball slowly turns overhead. I must admit that the mood was perfect when it all started. 1999 came and went along with the whole album. The disco ball reflected smooth colored lights that resembeled what Prince's stuido might have looked like. My ears hadn't really heard such a straightforward album putting out sounds of rock, pop and of course funk. New favorites were positioned in my brain, the gargantuan size of Prince's catalogue really makes your mind implode trying to get every song, but there is something so pure and raw about this album that makes you listen to it over and over. By the time the album ended, my eyes were wide with excitement, not because it was now one of my all time favorite albums, but because I had found one of my new favorite artists.

1999: With out question or comment...10/10

Little Red Corvette: There should be no skipping. This is a jam, and everyone should appreciate how significant this is...10/10

Delirious: Cheesy keyboard, sexual lyrics, and amazing delivery..10/10

Let's Pretend We're Married: Well it runs about 7:50, but it has an irresistable groove that gives this one the title of one the best ignored singles that prince released...10/10

D.M.S.R: Party...9/10

Automatic: A-U-T-O-matic, not hardley it runs for about 9:00, it is still very good...9/10

Something in the Water: Weird song that would, I guess, inspire what would become Computer Blue. This one is like many of Prince's songs, why you done me wrong? and he doesn't understand...10/10

Free: Cheesiest song of all time! 80's vintage sounding song about the world...10/10

Lady Cab Driver: This one has so many hooks that you can't get your head around it....10/10

All the Critics Love U in New York: No Comment

International Lover: Very appropriate ending to this album...10/10

5 out of 5 stars Prince is just amazing!.......2007-01-11

Prince is a very talented musician and as a fellow musician I see his music as very eclectic and very daring. The album starts off with the smash "1999" and it is the long version not the radio edit that people are used to. Absolutely one of my favorites and the reason I got into Prince "Little Red Corvette" is a spectacular rock song that was way ahead of its time. Another one of my favorites is "Something In The Water Does Not Compute" I just love the sound of the synth in the background. First time I heard "Lady Cab Driver" I was suprised but, once you get into Prince you realize that's who he is and what he really likes to talk about. Prince's music is known to be controversial to some but to the rest of us he is an amazing all in one icon who wraps up everything plain and simple into a nice piece of vinyl that we immensely enjoy.

The album is purely 80s era and during this period The Purple One heavily wrote dance and party numbers that have kept fans like me begging for more. Dance, Music, Sex, Romance aisdes from the longevity of the track and the thumping bass line it is a hell of a track to jam to. If you purchase this album, you won't regret it. This is a classic for those who like to party and dance. I believe that this album is worth every cent while, also making you come back for more from The Purple One.

1 out of 5 stars This is one of the worst of the 80's.......2006-10-29

I knew after 1983 things would never be the same with Rock and Roll ever again. The music was becoming more clean sounding with technology more or less replacing the majority of musicians. This would be one of the first ones. I remember hearing the first single from this which was "Little Red Corvette" I still say probably one of Prince's best songs, and the only other tune that's passible is "Let's Pretend We're Married". Everything else is horrible. The title track to me is a mindless, brainless dance tune, and I feel has no inadmissable value to life. Unfortunately, I guess the only way to get girls is to like this song. I also didn't take too much fancy to the other hit which was "Delirious". I am somewhat disappointed with this as to me Prince is a gifted performer, and plays a decent guitar, so why go technical? I just am appalled at the way music wound up, and it all started here.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Spanish Classical Guitar Music.......2005-09-18

As a sampler, this CD is an excellent introduction both to Spanish classical guitar music and to guitarist John Williams.
The music ranges from Renaissance composers (Sanz, Mudarra) and harmonized folk melodies to standard 20th Century works (Rodrigo, Torroba etc).

John Williams is excellent throughout. The CD is also cheap, and can be used either just for enjoyment, or further to explore other recordings by Williams, the classical guitar repertoire, or other classical guitarists.

As a marketing ploy, it is very effective.

For the collector or classical guitar enthusiast, the chief disadvantages of the CD are duplication of other recordings, and that the way at least some of the works on this CD are listed isn't helpful in telling the listener the set(s) to which these pieces belong and how to find them (e.g. "from ______, Op # "). The font listing the titles and track numbers is small and somewhat hard to read.

However, this CD should attract many listeners and enthusiasts both to the classical guitar, the repertoire, and guitarist John Williams - and I'm all for that.

Over 70 minutes playing time.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The guitar is an orchestra in miniature!.......2005-02-05

This admirable concept belongs to Hector Berlioz and it must not be a surprise the best guitarrists in the story have in common this trademark.

John Williams has always known the delicate equilibrium between the expresiveness and the glamouer. His impresive technique however is not exposed as his prima edonna. He goes directly to the soul of the composer, melts in his spirit and let the music sharp the qith eloquent conviction the composer's demanded atmosphere.

From Granados to Albeniz, from Rodrigo to Agustin Barrios - El indio Mangore -, from Moreno Torroba to Ponce , you will find the warmth, the passion and the Midas touch of this golden guitarrist.

5 out of 5 stars GUITAR MAJESTY.......2004-12-21

John Williams is a true Guitar virtuoso. His repetoire is very extensive and I use his music in my office while I work at my daily office duties. This album is a must for all guitar enthusiasts old or young.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sweet music, an essential addition to your collection.......2004-12-07

I originally bought this album three years ago, looking for a good introduction to Spanish guitar music. And this one fits that need perfectly. I still listen to and enjoy it today. I play this for guests at happy hour or dinner for a relaxed atmosphere. At Amazon's current price, this is a great value.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2004-01-26

This album/cd is extraordinary. All the songs are gorgeous and exciting to listen to. John Williams' interpretation and technique are perfect. After 22 years of listening to it, I still enjoy and appreciate it more every time. I love giving it as a gift.

When this material originally resurfaced in an earlier Rhino-celebrates-the-'70s program, many rock scribes contorted themselves into revisionist pretzels: this isn't so bad, they argued--none too convincingly. There'll be none of that here: much of the music on this colossal box set is godawful. The world doesn't miss the likes of Sammy ("Chevy Van") Johns and Sammy ("Candy Man") Davis. Or at least it doesn't miss the records they cut during the decade of disaster flicks and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. That said, this elaborate box is something to behold. The lovingly compiled 92-page booklet provides background on the ridiculous (David Soul, C.W. McCall, Carl Douglas) and the sublime (Parliament, James Brown, the Staple Singers), and the music swings on the same pendulum, with Harry Chapin, Bill Withers, and Cat Stevens sitting amid Wayne Newton, The Captain & Tennille, and Meco's jittery electro-take on the Star Wars theme. Seven discs, 160 selections! To paraphrase a popular ad slogan of the era, you won't believe you listened to the whole thing. --Steven Stolder

2 out of 5 stars yuck.......2007-07-13

I should have read the description better regarding the sound bites between some songs. I found them to be annoying. The Time Life collection is so much better and it doesn't cost much more.

5 out of 5 stars Peace, man............2007-05-31

O.K. I'm 38. I was born in 1968 and I wasn't into a lot of the 70's music until the decade was on its way out. But my parents had so many great vinyl compilations by that time and I had my cool new little record player that I HAD to listen to all the songs.
And now, I find that I'm doing the same thing with this set of CD's! It's freakin' 1979 all over again!
How can you cram so much 70's goodness into this box set? And to get the ORIGINAL songs from the ORIGINAL stars is just groovy. Too many compilations now have the original stars doing remakes of their songs and it just seems pointless to me.
Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), unabashedly my favourite song of ALL TIME, (just ask those that have to endure it EVERY time I karaoke) finds a great spot here in its ORIGINAL glory.
If you're thinking of getting a 70's compilation, STOP THINKING!! BUY THIS ON IMPULSE AND ENJOY A HASTY DECISION FOR ONCE!!
There'll be no time to feel any guilt when you're singing along to all the classics you grew up with.
"Billy, Don't Be A Hero!" "You're No Good" if you don't "Rock The Boat" and "Let Your Love Flow"! "Me and Mrs. Jones" will be "Stuck In The Middle With You" just "Smokin' In The Boys Room" if you don't "Get Down Tonight"!!
But hey, if you think "I'm Not In Love" with this set and you don't buy it?
Well....."Everybody Plays The Fool" "You Sexy Thing"!!

5 out of 5 stars The great, the good, the bad and the plain awful, in one delightful package.......2007-04-15

So the decade of the '70's corresponds to my junior high, high school and college years. During that time AM and later FM radio supplied the leitmotifs for that era of my life. This CD collection captures completely what we listened to as fed by the top 40 charts of the time. Much of this material is outstanding, some of it was silly and some of it was awful (Morris Albert's Feelings, Terry Jacks Seasons in the Sun! So bad it is fun to listen to). This magnificent compilation captures it completely in all its '70's era glory. And in typical Rhino fashion, it is elegantly packaged with an outstanding booklet and boxed set. True I'm biased in that I even liked the sound bites.

It is a bit expensive, and some have criticized the inclusion of the Top 40 single versions over the definitive album versions, but hey guys/gals, this is what they played on the radio at the time. Also missing are some of the superstars, but as the booklet says, you probably have lots of those already (e.g., Paul McCartney, Elton John, mid-period Stones, Billy Joel, etc.)

I was hesitant about the cost, but after one full listen through, I'm extremely pleased. Thank you Rhino (and thanks to Amazon, too who listed the delivery time as several weeks but it came within one week).

4 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC, DODGY PACKAGE.......2007-03-12

This is as comprehensive as a Seventies collection can get. The MIAs are obvious (no Eagles, Neil Diamond, Fleetwood Mac, Carpenters, Pink Floyd) but what's surprising is the number of major artists that DID get on here. The sound quality of 'Superstar' isn't great, the soundbites ARE fabulous, but the packaging is hopeless. While the write-ups are excellent, and the content generally flawless, the booklet itself fell apart after I read through it three times. I know for a fact mine isn't the only one this happened to. Is this a ruse to pretend it's more than 25 years old?

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-01-13

If you like all the old 70's songs then you have to get this nice box set, well worth every single penny.

5 out of 5 stars Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04

This may be the best money I've ever spent. I got 2-1/2 hours of bliss for less than what I'd usually pay for one CD -- and you know how it is with music. You buy an album because of a song or two that you love, and you find that you like maybe half the songs on it. There's not a single selection in this one that I would've left out. It includes Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by Pepe Romero on the guitar with the Acadamy of St. Martin in the Fields. I needed to replace my old LP recording of that. But I also get 30 other classical compositions and traditional Spanish pieces, each special in its own way.

Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.

I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.

2 out of 5 stars not what i expected.......2007-03-26

This CD for me was a waste of money. Its just not what i thought it would be. Others may enjoy it but for me..it wasnt what i was hoping to hear.

4 out of 5 stars excellent guitar performances.......2006-07-27

Outstanding guitar performances. I gave it only 4 stars because I do not personally like some of the compositions.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Guitar..........2005-07-26

Up until this collection, I'd never heard the "Cavatina" played in the Deer Hunter movie. After hearing it, I could play it all day and not tire of it! It moves me that much, considering that it's almost "not" a classical guitar selection. The rest of the music is first rate! Excellent playing, but the "Cavatina..."
Buy it and enjoy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its Name!.......2005-06-10

If you only bought this double CD set, you'd have a good starter collection of classical guitar music. It includes most of the standards, as well as rarer pieces. In addition to the many solo pieces, there are several excerpts from orchestral works, with Rodrigo's indispensible Adagio from "Concierto de Aranjuez" topping the list. There are also several flamenco numbers included, complete with heel taps and castanets.

The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.

My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

Fleetwood Mac's 1997 reunion could have been the kind of event that works on video--great concert, after all--but ends up not paying off in repeated listenings on CD. But The Dance, while concentrating on the group's '70s and '80s triumphs, finds the Mac energy running high and impassioned. New songs like "Temporary One" and "Bleed to Love Her" are fine additions to the canon, while "Everywhere" and "Say You Love Me" both breeze along the way you remember them and manage a reinvention in the live setting. The dark side of the vision is accounted for with Lindsey Buckingham's crazed solo "Big Love," but best of all is "Silver Springs," wherein Stevie Nicks tears the roof off the sucker and sets fire to the rubble. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars good old mac.......2007-07-13

I hadn't listened to Fleetwood Mac in many years, although Rumors was a big part of my personal soundtrack in 78-80. I bought this for "Silver Springs", a truly beautiful song which I was not surprised to learn could and should have been a track on Rumors. Anyway, I was amazed how wonderful they sound in this live performance ,20 years after their heyday.A definite must have for even a casual Mac fan

5 out of 5 stars Bringing in 2 new generations.......2007-04-28

I was born in 1980, but i remember my mom listening to Fleetwood Mac when I was a kid. When this concert came on TV she watched it, and being that I was in a marching band, I was captivated by the addition of the marching band at the end of the concert. We bought the DVD and CD and I must have watched and listened to it over and over and over again. Fast forward to 2007. I was borrowing my mothers car, and this CD was in the CD player. My Little Demon came on, and my 7 y/o son asked me to turn it up. We listened to that song repeatedly for the 30 minute car ride. My mothers CD has some scratches in it (she's actually on her 3rd or 4th copy since that first one), so here I am buying one for my son and I.

5 out of 5 stars Fleetwood Mac - Must Own Live Album.......2007-03-05

"The Dance" was something that most people thought they would never see. Like The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over", the 70's multiplatinum version of Fleetwood Mac was a band that most people thought would never happen again. But, like The Eagles this version of the band was brought back together for a television concert and the result was the DVD and album called "The Dance". For me this is the album that really made me into a Fleetwood Mac fan. Back in the band's hey day I never really gave them much thought. Of course they were all over the radio and I liked some of their tunes ok, but I just thought of them as a top 40 singles band and never purchased or even listened to a whole album. Then in the mid 90's a friend of mine let me borrow Lindsey Buckingham's solo album "From The Cradle" and I was blown away. I had never realized what a unique talent Buckingham had and was captured by both his creative songwriting ability and instrumental prowess. Not too long after that the Fleetwood Mac reunion came along and I realized that I had never really given these guys a chance. Not only is Buckingham great on this album, but I came to appreciate Stevie Nicks and her vocal and writing contributions as well. Hell, the whole band impressed me. The album consists of plenty of Mac classics as well as four new tunes. Studio versions of some of these would show up later on the bands "Say You Will" reunion album. The new songs are all good with Buckingham's "Bleed To Love Her" and "My Little Demon" very much in his slightly off kilter style. Nick's "Sweet Girl" seems to be a look back at her younger self, and even my least favorite Mac songwriter Christine McVie scores a knockout with "Temporary One". Of the classic Mac tunes they are all delivered with energy and verve. The album opens with a great rendition of one of the band's signature tunes "The Chain". Lindsey Buckingham shines and crunches out killer guitar solos during "I'm So Afraid" and his solo acoustic rendition of "Big Love" is done very different from the studio original yet works like a charm. Nicks may not quite have the range that she once had, but still shines on "Dreams", "Rhiannon", (with it's effective slow introduction), and the truly gorgeous "Landslide". The biggest highlight for Nicks however is her impassioned delivery of "Silver Spring" her ode to Lindsey Buckingham. Maybe it's all just theater, but she spits out the lyrics of this song as if many years of frustration are welled up inside her. I remember seeing the DVD of this concert and the sight of Nicks and Buckingham singing the venomous lines to each other was truly moving. Yea, I know they have done this song many times over the years, but this time, it came across, as if she was really letting him have it. If she was just acting she really did an effective job. Christine McVie is also very good on this disc. My least favorite Mac, her voice has arguably held up the best of the three and she does a very nice job of "Everywhere", "You Make Lovin Fun", and "Say You Love Me". As an encore Fleetwood Mac bring on the USC marching band for rousing renditions of their experimental hit "Tusk", and the grand finale of "Don't Stop". To be honest I even surprise myself at the amount of praise I heap on this disc, especially considering I never was really into this band before. But....this is an outstanding live collection and a must for Fleetwood Mac fans or anyone who might what to explore these guys further.

No matter if you are a big Fleetwood Mac's fan or not, you have to listen to this album. If you are around 35/40 years old, you will probably enjoy many of the tracks of the album.
It has an incredible sound quality and the versions of the original songs are great, full of inspiration and feeling.
Christine and Stevie's live performances are awesome.
