The album is a potpourri of Carmen McRae, with her mesmerizing style that flirts with the melody at every turn, but still keeps a jazzy distance. Three highlights stand out in a glittering evening: Send in the Clowns, New York State of Mind, and Superwoman. Each presents a different side of the singer who has never forsaken her jazz roots despite repeated commercial pressure to dilute her music for a mass market.
Album Description
A superb recording from the crowned Queen of Jazz. Includes Stevie Wonder's "Superwoman," Roger & Hart's " Thou Swell," Steven Sondheim's "Send In the Clowns," Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On?," and Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind." A fascinating recording from Carmen McRae.

Exquisite.......2002-10-06
They say the older the grape, the sweeter the wine, and such is the case with Carmen McRae. It doesn't seem possible that any one singer could become any more better with age than Carmen McRae, and this album proves it. She inhabits a song like no other singer in history. Her virtuosity as a musician is front and center at this live and intimate show, where she reinvents traditional and contemporary songs into their absolute definitive versions. Take "New York State of Mind" or "Send in the Clowns" for example. I personally have never liked "Send in the Clowns" ever, until I heard Carmen sing it here. It's amazing, simply amazing, what she does with this tune. And the same can be said for every tune in this set. But the absolute high point on this CD is the luscious, melancholy and exquisite "My Foolish Heart." If this doesn't move you to tears, nothing will.... it's one of the great jazz vocal performances of all time. "How Long Has this Been Going On" is another definitive moment in music history available right here on this CD.
Don't hesitate in purchasing this superlative work of art. This is Carmen McRae at her absolute best.

Album Description
When listening to an artist such as Ahmad Jamal, you must try to understand the many facets of the individual, and then further understand what is going on inside his head and heart at the time of the given performance. Only then can you appreciate the emotional content that finds its way from an artist, through the music, to the audience. When we decided to record Ahmad Jamal Live at Bubba's on March 20, 1980, Ahmad was reluctant to do so due to some personal problems. At it turned out, whatever it was that was on his mind, added a dimension to his music never before captured on record.Ahmad performed an evening of emotions instilled into some of the most beautiful music ever recorded by any pianist. In "People" and "Folks Who Live on the Hill" his feelings come through with a diversity of technique, exposing the inner Jamal. When he performs the Bill Evans tune, "Waltz for Debbie," you feel the love and respect Ahmad had for Bill. He treats the song as a tribute to an artist and expresses a multitude of feelings for the man.
After hearing the album, you will have shared a side of Ahmad Jamal that very few have heard, and become one of the privileged few who can say, "I heard Ahmad Jamal."

Highly worthy Carmen for collectors.......2003-01-14
This album, a fine representation of Carmen's night club act in the 80's, not only captures her voice with almost overly "present" audio fidelity but demonstrates her uncanny sense of time and ability to phrase behind (way behind!) the beat. And as always, Carmen is in charge of the drama in every lyric, never leaving the slightest doubt about what word she's singing.
At times on this album--the beginning of the last decade of her career--I have the feeling that Carmen's expressive intentions exceed her vocal equipment, producing a few forced, even distracting, tones in the upper register. Also, the repertory is at best inconsistent ("Superwoman," "New York State of Mind," and even "Send in the Clowns"--at least without Sinatra--are some of the tunes that have not fared all that well with the passing of time).
In top form!.......2000-01-31

Wynton as I would like to hear him play today.......2000-02-15
Wynton Marsalis will never be a Miles Davis, or even a Chet Baker (of whom I am also a big fan), but his playing here whilst still a teenager is defiantely not to be ignored. He should have stayed a little longer with the Messengers and who knows, he might have become a more free flowing player (as he was in his youth), than the technically perfect player he is today. If there were ever a music in which mistakes didn't always sound bad, than that is Jazz, It is a shame as he has become more recognised, so that youthful exuberance has gradually disappeared.
