Mack the Knife
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Best known for his early rock hits such as "Splish Splash," by the early '60s Bobby Darrin had pretty much abandoned rock and recast himself as something of a finger poppin', tuxedo wearing, youth-camp version of Sinatra. Surprisingly, it worked. While he lacks Frank's chops, the swinging "By the Sea" and "Mack The Knife" are two of the best latter-day Sinatra imitations, and there's no denying his light touch on "Lazy River." He even had the guts to take on "Guys and Dolls," a song identified with the Chairman. As good as this album is, it only gives a fraction of Darrin's talents. For a broader picture (including his late 60's transformation into a jeans wearing folkie), check out Rhino's Darrin box, As Long As I'm Singing. --Steven Mirkin --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Amazon.com essential recording
A 43-year-old Ella rolls through her typical routine in feisty fashion on this 1960 recording, which documents the opening show of her European tour. There's the Satchmo impersonation (a joyous "Mack the Knife"), the lengthy scat showcase ("How High the Moon," on which she quotes Charlie Parker's "Ornithology"), and a bevy of Gershwin and Porter tunes. Supported by pianist Paul Smith's quartet (with the elegant Jim Hall on guitar), Ella's voice sounds earthier than usual and her phrasing is as appealing as ever. She's sublimely tender on "Misty" and wonderfully sultry on "Too Darn Hot." The CD reissue includes two unreleased tracks from the Berlin concert plus two 1956 gems (including a stylish "Love for Sale") that were mistakenly pressed on this release. Upon its initial release, the album picked up two Grammies and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Pop chart; its acclaim was well deserved. --Marc Greilsamer

"IT WILL BLOW YOU AWAY".......2007-01-13
This cd is beyond words...The first lady was in the zone on How high the moon...She scatted, she hit the highs and lows, she imitated all the instruments...If you don't get a shiver down your spine after hearing this, then you just don't get it...This cd will blow you away. It's one of the best live cd's I own...It's a great feel-good cd...Mack the knife is another great song...I love Bobby's and Pop's versions but Ella just takes it to another level...What song couldn't she sing?...It's worth buying for How high the moon and Mack the knife alone...She's in total control of her voice on this cd and it shows...I'm a young cat and heard this first in my Grandparents house. When I heard how high the moon I just lost it. I must have played that song 20 times that day...I didn't know a person could do the things Ella did with her voice...To this day this cd still blows me away.
I'm a rocker, but..........2006-01-03
if I could give this 50 stars, I would.
Ella's voice is truly nonpareil, and while I wasn't immediately in love with every song on the album, the legendary Mack the Knife, Too Darn Hot, The Lady is a Tramp, and How High the Moon kept me playing it again and again.
Many years later, I love every single song and this is still my favorite of my Ella cds (and I have a lot of them!), the one I play the most. It puts me in a good mood every time.
Her crystalline voice is always spectacular, but in a live setting, as pointed out by others, her creativity and scatting ascend to stellar heights. And there's an added quality of warmth in her voice not captured on studio recordings.
When I was in high school (30 years ago?), I had the chance to meet Ms. Fitzgerald. She was truly a gracious woman, and, as another reviewer pointed out, so truly humble in the face of her awesome talent. When I told her I listened to Mack the Knife every night before I went to bed, she said, "Don't do that, honey, it'll give you nightmares," and said she was also happy to hear when young people enjoyed her music.
I am listening to How High the Moon right now. Amazing.
If you haven't heard this cd, you are not just missing out on a legendary album and piece of music history, but a wonderful and joyous listening experience.
Ella, Live In Berlin, All Hail the First Lady of Song.......2005-10-05
Ella Fitzgerald is even better live than in the recording studio.
This album showcases Ella in what I feel is her most comfotable setting; with a small band and live audience.
You can feel the love the fans have for Ella even before she starts singing and as she sings through each song in this live set. Ella's humble manner comes across as well as she daintily thanks the crowd for the thunderous applause that she receives after each song.
Ella's scat on How High the Moon is at its peak. She always loved volleying back and forth with the band members to see who could out-scat who.
But the shining star on this album by far is Mack The Knife. Ella's rendition is memorable since half-way through the song, she forgets the words, but still makes it work and takes the song to a new level by launching into an impromptu Louie Armstrong scat impersonation which sends the audience through the roof!
This is one of the best live albums I have ever owned. Ella, Live at the Opera House, is a close second, but Live in Berlin gets my vote.
Excellent.......2004-12-29
I love the songs of Ella, and I've never heard in a concert alive. it is just great
"Too Darn Hot!".......2004-11-04
...and that's exactly what this CD is!
There's really no other words that I can use to describe! PURCHASE IT and find out for yourself! You won't be disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
some brilliant renditions, but can't quite all mix together.......2006-10-19
I like the spirit of this album, which is to let the music of Kurt Weill attach itself to the many worlds it came from. This was classical music that also used elements of popular music at the time, all with a very dark and almost mechanical tone. So it would seem fitting to have exquisite voices like Teresa Stratas rub elbows with darker elements like Nick Cave in this collection. There are also the jazz influences developed by Charlie Haden and Betty Carter.
In all, there are some brilliant interpretations of Weill here. I am a fan of Cave's "Mack the Knife" and David Johansen's "Alabama Song," and how can someone NOT like Lotte Lenya herself on "Pirate Jenny" and the drolling of the immortal William S. Burroughs talking through "What Keeps Mankind Alive?"
But other tracks feel to be just too short of brilliance. I love that Lou Reed tries to turn "September Song" into a kind of rock ballad, almost a VU "It Was a Pretty Good Year," but the rendition seems a little short of energy and falls flat after a while. Elvis Costello, though magnificent as an overall artist, just doesn't bring new life to "Lost in the Stars."
Perhaps the problem in the end that the choices were a little too much of the Top 40 Weill (if there really can be such a term). These are songs that have for a long time been regarded as the best of Weill, and it might have furthered the purpose of his music to find new gems and bring them into the sunlight.
Cool and Camp.......2006-08-24
This is a very biased review- I originally had much of Weill's work on cassette tape- way back in the olden days- before CD's- so I am already very partial to many of the tracks on this CD- I would recommend it not only to Kurt Weill fans, and the fans of the various artists featured, but I would also strongly recommend this to anyone who likes artsy, camp, fun burlesque, Bohemian European stuff. The record, even though performed by contemporary artists still retains much of it's zeitgeist, it evokes the era in which Weill was writing and it rounds out any great eclectic record collection. It's a great musical discovery for fans of all sorts of genres, and EVERYONE should own at least one recorded arrangement of "Mack The Knife". (You know, for parties and stuff!)
September Song Music of Kurt Weill.......2006-08-22
Songs from the film-documentary done by various artists. Excellent choice if you like Mr Weill's music. I saw the film and always wanted the CD. Now I have and I recommend it highly.
It's a long time between January and December.......2004-06-11
Kurt Weill is one of those composers who juggles Jewish angst with Catholic guilt: and possibly vice versa. As a collection, it is nonpareil. Each interpretation becomes a definitive reading of the "song". Lord, it is one of the best assemblies of contemporary artists going. Lou couldn't be better; Ms O'Hara, in fine form, performs her deranged puppet-dance to the X. OK. An unknown. Roping-in, such a postmodern figure as, well, you-know-who, to orate Weill's lyrics is never less than exceptional. An amazing collection. Is there a DVD?
Paul
Ain't we Hip?!!?.......2003-07-23
This is the avant version of these songs, everything done with that Downtown fingers-across-the-blackboard screech. They even got Johanson doing it, which is no less than amazing. The sole exception is the Persuasions' "O Heavenly Salvation", but one song does not an album make.
The mystery here is that there's a perfectly good compilation from the 80s, "Lost in the Stars: the Music of Kurt Weill", featuring many of the same songs--and, if I'm not mistaken some of the same performers. That's the one you want. Too bad it's OP.

The first classical music I remember hearing was on movie soundtracks--the animated cartoons of my childhood in which the characters would chase, trick, and bash each other to the tunes of Liszt's Hungarian rhapsodies and overtures by Rossini and Suppe. This music was used not because it was great, but because it was full of action and out of copyright--a lot cheaper (and probably better) than hiring a living composer. Woody Allen may have a nobler motivation in his decision to use classics on his soundtracks, and his selection of music, from Bach to Prokofiev, is more sophisticated. This superbly miscellaneous collection will be full of happy discoveries for many listeners. It may also help you to identify tunes that you hear in a movie and can't get out of your mind. --Joe McLellan

--Steven Mirkin
Customer Reviews:
Darrin the best.......2005-09-07
Bobby Darrin was one of the best, Sinatra was the King, Darrin was the Prince , first in line to the throne , I was in the English Pub in NYC the day it came over the air that Darrin had died on the operating table, We knew he was sick, but not that sick, Sadly missed by all fan's of quality music throughout the world, This album is a Five Star recording, A must for the Darrin fan. Bobby's sitting on a cloud looking down, snapping his finger's in time and smiling.
Fabulous.......2005-02-18
This has become one of my alltime favorite albums, and the best of the five Darin albums I've got.
"Mack the Knife" is one of the greatest songs ever. Lots of people have done this, including Sinatra and Louis Armstrong, but no one touches Bobby Darin's version here. This song will live as long as bars have jukeboxes. "Lazy River" is strangely evocative; it somehow combines the hazy, lazy sense with his ferocious delivery. "Beyond the Sea" is right up there with "Mack the Knife." I believe it has undertones of being with the one you love, after death. It's one of the most romantic songs ever.
His "Guys and Dolls" just assassinates this song. It swings like crazy. All the blues numbers in here - "Was There A Call for Me" "I Guess I'm Good For Nothing But the Blues" "Black Coffee" and "Pete Kelly's Blues" - are fine. They draw vivid pictures in the imagination; Darin sells them completely.
"Clementine" is politically incorrect but true to the original and still wonderful; you wouldn't think a corny traditional song like that could be delivered with 10 tons of dynamite like he does. Ditto "Bill Bailey." (This was something he apparently excelled at, resuscitating traditional songs most vocalists wouldn't bother with and making them work.)
Darin wrote "Artificial Flowers" and shows that social consciousness wasn't the sole property of folk-singing pukes with acoustic guitars. At least two people I know cried when I first played this song for them.
"I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "Just Friends" make a pair on this album that has private meaning for me: My first foray into jazz in college involved Charlie Parker; the first Bird album I ever had also had versions of these two songs on it. This is the only other album I know that does both - I'd never heard the words before - and this says something about the versatility of both the standards songbook and Bobby Darin. Bebopper on the one hand, rock `n roller cum Vegas singer on the other hand.
"Skylark" - you can just see the bluest of skies when he sings this. "Christmas Auld Lang Syne" almost makes me want to celebrate Christmas. (I'm Jewish.) I think it speaks to Christmas as people imagine they'd like to have it.
SHARIN' DARIN.......2004-11-15
It strikes me that the individual human response to music is one of life's most intriguing mysteries. What is that unexplainable thing inside us that resonates to a certain combination of musical notes, or to the tonal quality of particular instruments, but not others? And why is this response not universal?
For me, the melody of MY FAVORITE THINGS is so pretty, so clever, so powerful that I can't hear it once without it bouncing around inside my skull for the next several hours. And yet I know people who are apathetic about it. How can that be? We even find this mystery taking place between people who inhabit the same musical orbit. The "King Of Rock 'N' Roll" might have two devoted fans; the first who loves SUSPICIOUS MINDS and MEMORIES, but is not overly thrilled by HOUND DOG and IN THE GHETTO. The second fan's opinion is the complete reversal.
Some might think that this is comparable to our myriad responses to food flavors, but in that example there is a physiological explanation - something to do with chemical reactions in the glands, the taste buds. With music it's entirely intangible; some "it" within the inner being that responds, makes the body move, the toes tap, the mind rejoice. . .or mourn.
That "it" within me loves Bobby Darin's music, but "it" is selective. "It" doesn't care for Darin's pop hits, of which only a few appear on this collection. And although "it" digs LAZY RIVER which has one of the greatest, most energetic vocal performances ever, we play this album for the fabulously moving standard ballads (some with big band arrangements.) WAS THERE A CALL FOR ME; I GUESS I'M GOOD FOR NOTHING BUT THE BLUES; DON'T DREAM OF ANYBODY BUT ME; WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MADE; BLACK COFFEE; SKYLARK; and even CHRISTMAS AULD LANG SYNE, these are the reasons you find me in this place. "It" likes 'em!
There is a certain something, a quality, in Darin's voice that can be discerned on his ballads; an innate melancholia that can't be taught, nor faked. I have found this in the voices of only two other singers: the jazz vocalist, Astrud Gilberto, and Karen Carpenter, who had it in spades! In fact, so much so that it sometimes bled through even on her uptempo numbers like TOP OF THE WORLD and SING. It's a kind of faint whisper of an intense inner aloneness, or a vague remembrance of something; a wistful yearning for what has passed and can't be retrieved, like a dream of something that glowed golden way back when, in the recesses of the mind. Hell, I don't know what it is, but "it" sure loves it! Anyway, that quality permeates so much of these recordings and that's why "it" makes me play them so often.
If you know what I'm yakking about here, and if it appeals to your "it" too, then also obtain a used copy of the "out-of-print", 'CLASSIC DARIN' if you can locate one at a reasonable price. This collection also contains many ballad tracks like WHERE LOVE HAS GONE; FLY ME TO THE MOON; A TASTE OF HONEY; SOFTLY, AS I LEAVE YOU; and SOMEWHERE with Bobby's "blue" voice thang goin' on.
According to his 2004, July 14th review, it seems that The Big Dong, doesn't have this same "it" inside of him. You think maybe I should go see if his priest can exorcise my "it" too?
It has his swingers, but too many ballads, which Darrin.......2004-07-14
Daris was many things a 50's rock'n'roller teeny bopper, a rockon' cowboy, and a vegas swingin' lounger, but he COULD NOT sing ballads. He just doesn't do well with songs like Black Coffee, when he sings a 3 minute ballad it seems like 10 minutes of terror. This cd does however have his greatest swinger son one cd Artificial Flowers, Beyond The Sea, and Mack The Knife, with a few midtempos taht he handles well by rockin' and rollin' hsi way thru swing standards liek Bill Bailey, Down With Love and Clemintine. A good cd, if only there were no ballads and all swingers! Still a good disc!
the PERFECT Darin collection.......2004-03-04
OK. I finally found the PERFECT Darin collection! The range of genres, the hits, the misses--this has it all! A great companion to this all-studio collection is the 3-CD box set "Rock & Roll Legends," in which Darin has his own disc, featuring LIVE versions of "Splish Splash," "Plain Jane," "Dream Lover," and "Mack The Knife" (the ONLY song to overlap with "Best Of Bobby Darin Vol. 2"). Though "Best Of Bobby" gives you ALL the goodies, "Rock & Roll Legends" lets you hear how Darin laid on the spangle in his stage show; it's a heart-stealing, mood-changing ten-tracker that sits nicely beside the "Best."

Kurt Weill: Re-discovery..........2006-11-10
I am so impressed and pleased to have found this recording on Amazon.com. I am always amazed when I find these seemingly obscure recordings, and thrilled to know they exist. What a wonderful history of our musical world---and what a chance to hear interesting, challenging, and unusual performances from so many well-known people. The songs live on--the composer is 'new' again, and this recording becomes part of history re-discovered. Thank you Amazon.com for your continued professionalism and for having these recordings available.
Incredible Live Album.......2002-02-10
This incredible concert (which i attended) benefitting The Actors' Fund of America, contains some absolute MUST performances for any Broadway collector.
For me, the highlights are HUGH PANARO ("It Never Was You"), NANCY DUSSAULT ("It's Him") and TIM CURRY singing "Surabaya Johnny" in German!
Loretta Divine, Brock Peters, they're all great!

Album Description
Viveza, one of the world's favourite salon groups does it again! With "Encore" this Canadian quintet brings alive salon music from Europe and South America with a freshness and vivacity that you have to hear to believe.
Salon music flourished in the 1920's and 30's, especially in the grand hotels. The repertoire of each ensemble was as varied as the patrons who frequented these fabled "palm courts." In an evening at the Ritz one was likely to hear music from Dvorak to Ravel, Lehar to Brahms or gypsy folksongs.
As you will discover with Viveza's Encore, the salon repertoire offers a cornucopia of tasty delights for your listening pleasure.
Customer Reviews:
A "Sequel" that Surpasses the Original.......2006-08-26
This album tops the previous "Viveza, Music in the Palm Court Style". The groups' inventiveness really shines in this CD. From a marimba version of Piazzola's "Milonga del Angel" to an absolutely smashing version of Moritat (Mack the Knife from Threepenny Opera), the selections are superb. I highly recommend this one!
Just Right for Internet Work.......2000-03-21
We have entertained ourselves with the video Jeeves and Wooster for the past two years. Since my wife and I played in classical orchestras, we greatly enjoy the quality and "just right" musical pace of the CD for office internet work stimulation. Now we ordered another copy for home entertainment.

Customer Reviews:
BUYER BEWARE: Previously unreleased bonus tracks have since been reissued on "It's Time" Fanclub Edition!.......2006-01-14
Before you think about shelling out big bucks some sellers are asking for this release (that apparently was only available briefly at Target stores) it is worth noting that the two unreleased bonus tracks on this disc ("I'm Beginning To See The Light", "Softly As I Leave You") have since been reissued on the Fanclub Edition of "It's Time" (available through michaelbuble.com), which in additon includes a third bonus track "It's All In The Game". If you're a serious fan the Fanclub Edition is the one to get!
