Contrasting Pearls: One String Black, One Strand White.......2006-07-05
The first album here, BLACK COFFEE, is representative of the Peggy Lee most listeners are familiar with, and it is available as a CD by itself, at a more affordable price. One of her very best albums, it is also one of her most purely jazz oriented efforts. Featuring Peggy's understated vocals in a small combo setting, I consider these performances to be "Essential Peggy Lee." There isn't a throwaway in the pack, including the four songs that were later added to the original BLACK COFFEE album.
SEA SHELLS is a little-known album of folk music. Strange to hear "the female Sinatra," as she's been called, do folk songs, and this is not an easy record to love, even for folk fans like me. It does, with patience (because there are no uptempo tracks here), reward repeated listening. Some of these musty old songs benefit from Lee's hushed reading. "White Birch And The Sycamore" and "Nine Thorny Thickets" are especially lovely. The arrangements are sparse; a couple of the "songs" are spoken (there are a couple of Chinese poems), and some are brief instrumentals. This record created a mood that stuck with me for a long time after I first listened to the entire album; my SEA SHELLS record was originally bought used, and is fairly beat up, so the pristine sound quality of this CD is most welcome. Of all Lee's records, this one sounds the most like Peggy singing to me in my living room, with her soft, intimate tones complimented by harp strums and delicate flourishes of harpsichord. Most unusual.
Because the first album is a 5-star essential, I can't give this collection anything less than that. Honestly, though, because of its limited appeal and its glacial pace, SEA SHELLS by itself would only get two, or three stars at most. If you are a major Peggy Lee fan who has somehow managed to get through life without hearing BLACK COFFEE, and you are curious about SEA SHELLS, by all means buy this collection!
Two very different albums from Peggy.......2003-08-17
The first album making up this twofer, Black coffee, is typical of Peggy's music - a jazz-pop collection featuring both famous and obscure songs from the Great American Songbook. The first eight tracks were originally released on an LP in 1953 and featured Peggy backed by trumpet, piano, bass and drums. Later, the LP was re-issued with four additional tracks - these are tracks 9 to 12 on this CD. Those four tracks were recorded at a later date and featured similar backing but with vibes and celeste instead of trumpet.
Among the songs on Black coffee, the title track remains one of Peggy's most famous songs despite never having been released as a single, while There's a small hotel i. Perhaps, the best of the other tracks on what can only be described as an outstanding collection - one of Peggy's finest albums. There are several classic songs here, usually associated with other singers, including I've got you under my skin, My heart belongs to Daddy, Love me or leave me, It ain't necessarily so and You're my thrill.
As a total contrast, the other album, Sea shells, is far removed from Peggy's normal style. A harp and a harpsichord provide the musical backing and most of the songs are folk songs. Furthermore, all the songs are slow - no upbeat songs to break the tempo. Some of the tracks are instrumental while the two tracks featuring Chinese love poems are narrated, not sung. The liner notes describe Sea shells as an intensely personal album.
I enjoy many different kinds of music including folk, but even I find that Sea shells is a difficult album to get into. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating album and if you can give it the dedicated attention that it demands, you may find it to be a very rewarding experience.
I notice that the Black coffee album has been made available on a CD by itself. You may find that to be a more suitable purchase, especially if you don't like folk music. For those who can appreciate both albums, this twofer shows just how versatile Peggy Lee was.
A jazz vocal masterpiece!!!.......1999-10-01
Simply one of the best jazz vocal albums ever recorded. Highly recommended!

Romance! Music! Comedy! And ELLEN FOLEY!.......2000-02-02
Live stage shows are an art form much overlooked in America; so finding this CD was a wonderful surprise, as it allowed me to enjoy something I wouldn't otherwise ever have a chance to see: a play starring my favorite actress, ELLEN FOLEY! I've always been more impressed with her acting (NIGHT COURT) than her singing (BAT OUT OF HELL) and this CD contains more of her presence and personality than any record I've heard her on! It's mainly the story of a woman who has 2 encounters with a man who, while he comes across as optimistic and uplifting on the surface, is really a self-destructive personality with problems of his OWN! (I could probably relate because I've met the type!) Highly entertaining; highly recommended! (Now if only someone would reissue her solo album, NIGHTOUT; or get her to do a new album... we can hope, right?)

By Far The Best Remastering Sound.......2005-12-27
This recording is a masterpiece. Peggy Lee creates a concept album unlike any other in commercial recordings up to that time, and perhaps for another 30 plus years into the future (this is from 1955). It is really a folk music album, with all songs accompanied by a harp (mostly), or harpsichord. It may be listened to as an entire suite, or selecting individual songs. Many of the individual songs are astounding - fragile, gentle vocals that overwhelm you. If Peggy had pursued more folk recordings, she would have been the preeminent folk singer in the folk boom that came 6-10 years after this recording.
THIS VERSION HAS SOUND THAT COMPLETELY BLOWS AWAY THAT ON THE UK CD ON THE MCA LABEL (the two-on-1 CD). The Japanese mastering is so far superior that it is a crime that the UK CD is even on the market.

One of our most perfect artists in profound form........2006-01-28
I will not elaborate on the qualities of this album. I was not familure with this genre before now. I will tell you that I will never forget this performance. Please search and find this album sometime.
Superb sentiment that is gone from us in 2005!.......2005-07-04
If you do NOT understand this album, it is probably because you have been squashed by the level of crap that has continued to assault our ears for the last 30 years! If you do, you are one of the lucky ones, my friend. This album IS and always has been a treasure. BUY IT!
Buy the cheap version FIRST!.......2000-08-09
I couldn't agree more about the sound quality of imported pressings -- they ARE superior. I think Peggy Lee is the greatest, and I never thought I'd say this about ANY effort of hers, but this album is God awful. Her vocals (as always) are inspired, but the material is the pits, and her recordings of Asian "poetry" to harp accompanyment are toe-curlingly embarassing -- what was the lady THINKING? Try a cheap pressing first (if you must) and then ask yourself, "Do I REALLY want to hear this material more clearly?"
MuchBetter Sound Quality with Japanese CD"s.......2000-03-10
Yes it's true folks! ,there Truely is a"MuchBetter" Sound Quality with the Japanese CD"s.I bought both version's (Japanese+ MCA"s)of Peggy Lee's "Dream Street",and was astounded at the difference. The Japanese version was Quieter(LessTape Hiss),and Mixed Down better(Louder signal),and the Detail of the singing and general instruments Quality were simply Astounding. The reason i'm stating these facts about "Dream Street"is because I recently heard the Japanese version of "Sea Shells",and it was more of the Same Amazing Quality Again . Look I know it's quite alot of $ to pay double for cd's but it happens to be quite worth it ! For the LEE fans that do not know this album it is not a Jass album at all .More it is an album of Totally Beautiful Folk tunes even some Chinese ones accompanied by a stunning harpist background and Ms. LEE's voice .She actually wrote some of the songs and they are excellant as well, totally serene and Spatial . Once in a while a total classic Gem comes around and not too many people see or hear of it much less hear of the different versions of the cd etc.
this one's even more Rare because it is a Limited- -Edition .So many people will say"WoW ! "I would have loved to buy that cd ".Oh well maybe next time ! ... The problem is that the Record took about 40 years to resurfice Again ,,,I just did not want to wait Another 40 years, Thank You !for RE-Pressing this Sound Gem stone ,Sincerely Karta Iglesias
