5 out of 5 stars Romantic ballads that take you back to special moments..........2007-06-28

Neil Sedaka turned out great tunes all the while making it seem effortless. Not only was he one of rock and roll's pioneers, his warm voice was full of masculine sensitivity and he sang with a type of passion that really made his ballads shine. Neil remains a force to this day. This CD gives us some of his greatest hits; although I think to be completely thorough Neil's hits would be more than just the fourteen on this CD.

The CD track set begins with one major hit for Neil entitled "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do." The melody has that early 1960s feel to it; and the beat remains strong all through the number. Neil sang with all his heart; and the backup chorus works well to enhance "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do." I prefer this version of "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" to other interpretations that have a much slower tempo. The upbeat melody belies the sadness of the lyrics and for some reason it works wonders for this rendition of this number. However, if you want a song that has a more doo-wop flavor to it, give a listen to "The Diary." "The Diary" is a romantic tune with a solid musical arrangement; the percussion and the backup chorus work well again for this ballad.

One of my personal favorites of all time is Neil Sedaka singing "Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen." This coming of age song gives us all something to relate to when we hear it; and the upbeat melody proves infectiously catchy and very memorable the very first time you hear this tune. Great! "Little Devil" continues the upbeat flavor; only this time the boy Neil Sedaka sings of wants his girl to settle down and go steady with him. The playful musical arrangement charms me because it works so well.

"Oh! Carol" switches back to a more doo-wop type of love ballad; Neil sings of how he loves his girlfriend even though she treats him poorly. Neil performs one verse by simply speaking it while the female chorus backs him up well. "Next Door To An Angel" swings while being just about the best doo-wop song you could ever ask for; Neil sings about a young man who discovers that the girl next door is the girl for him. The upbeat melody is unforgettable and it complements Neil's vocals perfectly. On the other hand, "King Of Clowns" explores the pain a young man feels after his girlfriend leaves him. The percussion provides a good base for the tempo and the guys doing backup harmonize to perfection!

"Run Samson Run" equates the troubles of a Biblical hero to a young man's plight in these times because his girlfriend will hurt his feelings; and "Calendar Girl" gives us a joyous ode to how Neil loves women and the thought of being in love with a beautiful woman who he calls his "little calendar girl." "Calendar Girl" has a great beat--love those chimes, too!

The CD set ends with "Let's Go Steady Again;" the guitar starts the musical arrangement and this early rock and roll type ballad features Neil singing his heart out. His voice exudes masculine sensitivity and the backup chorus does a great job as they help to make this a great ballad.

The liner notes don't give us much more than the song credits; this disappoints me but the music more than compensates for this. I also would have liked a few extra numbers on this CD; but the very high quality control of the numbers on this CD impresses me so much that I will give this one five stars anyway!

Neil Sedaka left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of teenagers everywhere back in his day; and he will always be fondly remembered as one of the better American artists. In fact, he still remains a force to this day! I highly recommend this CD for casual fans of Neil Sedaka or people who want to experience Neil's magic for the very first time. Big fans of Neil Sedaka might consider the German import entitled Neil Sedaka - Greatest Hits as well as The Definitive Collection CD released just two months ago. The Definitive Collection contains demos and rarities that you may enjoy.

For what I expected this Cd lived up to it, but I didn't expect much. I only bought it for two songs on here. To call this album the greatest hits, though, is a lie unto itself.

Yeah, the hits are here, but Sedaka has way more to offer than "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do". If you are looking for more, you should get "All Time Greatest Hits" volume 2. Which offers great songs like "The Dreamer" "Look Inside Your Heart" "The Closest Thing To Heaven" and "All The Words In The World" just to mention a few.

Reviewers often allude to the "60s" when writing about Neil Sedaka but that can conjure up images of stringy-haired protestors and riots. That is not what Sedaka is about. His joyful tunes started before that time and unfortunately ended (until the mid-70s) just as the British invasion came. Both "Run Samson Run" and its flipside "You Mean Everything to Me" got lots of airplay in the early 60s. Besides the other even bigger hits on this CD, Mister Sedaka wrote songs for other artists ("Another Sleepless Night", Jimmy Clanton, comes to mind). Thankfully, he was rediscovered in 1975. Most recently (note the date), he performed here and got a great reception and review. If only he'd do it more often. Cherish this CD; it's worth the bucks.

These are the romantic songs I grew up with and that is why I bought this CD. If you need a "shot" in the romance department, one or more of these songs should do it.

Here they are, the songs you think of when you think of Neil Sedaka. Get the lyrics from the internet, print them out, grab some kids, and have a sing along. These are very peppy, singable songs for all to enjoy. It will be a real treat.

For anyone looking for an intro to the music of Neil Sedaka, this is the place to get started. You get all of his big hits including "Next Door To An Angel", "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" as well as the hilarious "Run, Samson, Run". Sound quality is good, though I really feel a bit better job could've been done (it does sound a bit harsh). The only other gripe is no inclusion of the original liner notes or original liner art. BMG says the album started appearing in the 1970's with a picture from that time period, but I beg to differ as this was issued in the mid-60's originally. But, the music is great!!!!

I'm 17 years old and along with Bob Marley and Thin Lizzy, Neil is my favourite singer. This is a great album -- his '60s stuff was definitely the best. He's got a voice that sounds like he's always smiling and his songs are so happy and infectiously poppy. Get this album, it's CLASSIC Neil, and all the songs are good.
