Best Of Dinah Washington [Import]

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
2002 compilation from EMI Gold features 18 of her finest songs, many of which were Top Ten US hits, from 7 albums she recorded for Roulette in the early 60's. She was at the peak of her career, & these songs illustrate her ability to beautifully rework any type of material. Tracks include, 'Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)', 'Call Me Irresponsible', 'For All We Know', 'Baby Won't You Please Come Home', 'Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be)', 'The Man That Got Away', 'Let Me Be The First To Know', 'Say It Isn't So', 'Destination Moon', 'Don't Say Nothing At All', 'Just One More Chance', 'Romance In The Dark', 'Miss You', 'I'll Never Stop Loving You', 'Conquette', 'The Blues Ain't Nothin' But A Woman Cryin' For Her Man', 'You're Nobody 'Till Someday Loves You' & 'I'll Be Around'.

4 out of 5 stars Good entry point........2007-01-27

Loved her voice but didn't know too much background. This CD is a nice survey collection to get you started.

5 out of 5 stars Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: Best of Dinah Washington.......2006-12-17

They always forget the great ladies of song. This is by far one of the best cd's I have purchased in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect..........2006-05-16

There are a few recordings that I like to refer to as my "cigar" music, this is indeed one of them, perfect for late night sitting on my balcony with a good cigar. Tune after tune, a homerun!! I like to load them in the player and program them in a random order.

5 out of 5 stars Her beautiful, mellow, smokey voice takes you back to a simpler time.......2006-03-03

I absolutly love it!

5 out of 5 stars The First Lady of R&B.......2004-01-19

Missing a lot of songs, but still important to buy. Some of these songs made me cry. The emotions in her voice were so unreal. People compare her to Billie and Bessie a lot, but Dinah had her own style. It's too bad that she is not remembered as much as the other ladies. One day, she will get her due respect (maybe a movie will help). Anyway, if these songs don't make you a fan then you don't know good music.

3 out of 5 stars Best of Roulette Is Not Very Best.......2001-02-02

I wondered why during Dinah's contract to Roulette Records they didn't saw fit to record her in something besides an orchestra or violin strings? I own many of Dinah's stuff (on both CDs and records), and to say the least, this woman is TALENTED. But it's frustrating to hear her in nothing short of constant repetition on this "Best of" collection. Roulette is generous including a whopping 23 tracks on this set, but most of them are the same arrangement and accompaniment. Couldn't they be more creative in the arrangements for Dinah? The best tracks here are taken from her outstanding "Back to the Blues" CD when she sang in a bluesy, gospel-inflected manner, the style that got her the most attention when she started out as a singer. Unfortunately with the pop success that came to Dinah, she repeated the same formula, and most of that is reflected here, track after track of endless strings and unimaginative big band charts. I would recommend bypassing this collection and getting the outstanding "Back to the Blues" set that is also available on Amazon. Dinah's singing there is inspired and blues-singing at its best.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Dinah Washington (The Roulette Years).......2000-03-23

The quintessential blues singer of our times! For anyone who's ever had a bad day just listen to her and she'll brighten your day. This album in particular captures her essence. Her vocal power and range rivals that of Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald. For any BLUES fan this album is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Classy and Timeless.......2000-02-06

her voice is one of a kind.this set showcases her talent.the band the arrangements are top form.her voice is Rich&timeless.she is one of the Greatest female singers ever.you feel the texture of her voice.

5 out of 5 stars Best recordings of Dinah Washington you'll hear........1999-07-10

This CD has great sound. This is Dinah Washington at her best, with the best backup band and recording session she ever had. When you listen to Dinah Washington sing on this album you'll believe that she was as equally talented as Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.

3 out of 5 stars Historic maybe but not essential.......2000-01-05

Apart from having her first recordings with Lionel Hampton (and these songs can be found on a brilliant "The First Issue" CD anyway) this collection doesn't bring any of Dinah Wahington's jewels.Instead, this is compilation of her early R&B years, long on hits but short in inspiration, double meaning blues novelties that doesnt age very well anymore. It's hillarious to her then-young Dinah singing "Long John Blues" with such innocent young voice - in my opinion her best work came much later, when her voice gained that unique bittersweet colour.Listen to her Bessie Smith tribute instead, now that was best of the blues!

4 out of 5 stars One of her best!.......1999-07-31

I have been looking for this CD for seveal years now and this is the only place I have found that has it and it is out of stock. Come on. Bring it back. I love "Baby Get Lost". It is my favorite song on this CD. I actually have the original LP -- yes -- I said LP.

This is some of Dinah Wahington's best work and you will really enjoy it, but look some place else for a picture of Dinah Washington, because this is Sarah Vaughan.
