synthetic cuteness.......2006-10-11
This discoid consists of cute, kitschy interpretations of classic rock songs from the 60s-70's. Without getting into specifics, they spice it up by dropping solos in from the songs of other bands (organ/synth). Anyway, this is fun stuff, and if you like this, please check out Devo's E-Z Listening Disc, very muzak-y versions of their songs (Come Back Jonee and Space Junk are the best in my opinion) and the Exotica 2000 cd by the late great Korla Pandit. All are worth the price.
deconstructive musical comedy .......2006-01-05
Forget The Producers and Grease! You want musical comedy, then give this a listen. Subjecting a series of classic rock era tunes to a synthesizer based reworking, the Moog Cookbook - Brian Kehew and Jellyfish/Imperial Drag's Roger Joseph Manning Jr. - is a band dedicated to hilarious deconstruction. Using moog sythnthesizers, here they cook up a series of versions of well known rock hits, and in many instances, actually improve the original; while I could care less if I ever heard Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4 or Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever again, these versions breathe much new life into these songs. Their version, too, of Kiss's showstopper Rock and Roll All Night goes places that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley could not possibly have ever imagined. However, while the Moog Cookbook have tongues firmly planted in cheeks, this is not merely an exercise in cheaps laughs. Intead, these renditions are really enjoyable to listen to as music. If you like bands like the Residents and/or music by techno artists like Daft Punk, you'll probably like this a lot.
0wns the originals.......2005-12-21
My feelings for the originals ranged from love to hate. I love the original "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Ziggy Stardust" while I hated classics like "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Rock N' Roll All Night".
The Moog Cookbook breathed new life into my beloved classics and it made me love their renditions of those that I hated. Not only is it a novel album, but it is always fun to listen and dance to. For me, it has not grown old in the years that I have owned it.
When you play it for your friends, make them guess each song. That is the best way to be introduced to the Moog Cookbook.
Hilarious! Had me laughing out loud........2004-10-01
I love all of the little whirs and blips that the Moog synthesizer makes but there isn't a lot of really fun music out there that uses the Moog. Maybe a couple of Perrey/Kingsley records and the Hot Butter album but that was about it. Until these guys hit the scene. It was a great idea to take songs that we are all very familiar with and reinterpret them via the Moog. This allows you to appreciate every little bleep and bloop as you listen to the songs. Some of the interpretations here are just downright brilliant. Favorites are Born to be Wild and Sweet Home Alabama. I still chuckle when I hear the little computerized voice say "Turn it up!" at the beginning of the latter.
To me the Moog's many sound effects stimulate the same pleasure centers that a Las Vegas slot machine does. It just feels good to listen. One word of warning though. This stuff is hilarious but should be digested in small doses. It's a novelty record and is not meant to be listened to over and over. So break it out every once in a while and let it bring a smile to your face!
The Worst Album Ever? (Real rating - Zero Stars).......2004-08-10
If there is a musical afterlife, Moog Cookbook will occupy the lowest level of hell. They will look up at the likes of Ace of Base, The Moldy Peaches, Great White, Richard Marx, and Wesley Willis, each of them singularly terrible artists, and know that covering the likes of "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Sweet Home Alabama" with a cheap Casio synth is what delivered them directly to the music equivalent of the river Styx. (Not to be confused with the band, Styx, which undoubtedly will have to answer for the dreck it recorded during its far-too-lenghthy career.

Great Recordings with a twist.......2006-08-03
This CD is full of jazz in spite of the fact that I have associated most of the performers with classical music. This shows the diversity in their ability to perform a wide array of music that I never heard in the past from them.
If you like jazz without too much dissonance, this is a great CD to purchase. The interesting and awkward rhythms are the best parts of this CD.
You can have your own party just from listening to this music.
Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29
I had this CD around and was going to put it up for sale via Amazon Marketplace. I listen to other Bolling CDs. But, somehow I had "missed" the jivvy jazz in this recording.
As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.
Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?
This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.
The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.
So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!

The titles of the respective discs in this two-CD set pretty much tell the story. Disc 1 covers the 1930s and '40s. There are venerable standards like Glenn Miller's "In the Mood," Duke Ellington's "Take The 'A' Train," and Les Brown's "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio." Additionally, there are gems from Count Basie, Woody Herman, Louis Armstrong, and the Dorsey Brothers. A total of 14 bands strut their stuff. Disc 2, entitled "Martini Mood," keeps things equally lively and varied. Among the numerous highlights are Benny Carter's "Everybody Shuffle," Andy Kirk's "Walkin' and Swingin'," and Fletcher Henderson's wonderful "Queer Notions." This is a marvelous anthology if you're looking for music, plain and simple--it gives an almost complete overview of the big-band era and, of course, swings like crazy. The one drawback is the lack of session details, but the music speaks well for itself. --Wally Shoup

Boswell sisters capture the spirit of thirties.......2001-08-17
This big 2-disc set of little thirties songs presents a great listening experience for those nostalgic for the days of the Dorsey Brothers and "real radio." The Boswell Sisters, who Ella Fitzgerald cited as an early influence, made a fine trio of jazz singers!

These early sides of the inimitable Billie Holiday, featuring Lester Young on tenor sax (and occasional clarinet), reveal just how joyful and good-humored her singing could be, in contrast to her darker, postwar image. Her uncanny ability to stretch lyrics in new and revealing ways was there from her beginning, but on this two-CD budget-priced collection, an unmistakable playfulness is evident. On cuts like "Easy to Love" and "Easy Livin'," the steady eighth-note rhythms and piping clarinets provide just the right element for Holiday to enter unexpectedly, giving each tune an emotional lift and turning it into something completely her own. She's totally sui generis. No one has ever quite sounded like her, before or since. On these discs, the torment and trouble plaguing her later years are missing, but the music still has emotional depth and those wonderful, lyrical nuances that only Holiday could impart. That this album set lacks session information is a drawback, but the music is spectacular. --Wally Shoup
Customer Reviews:
Billie's Feel Good Music.......2001-02-07
A very generous helping of the early Holiday (28 tracks) and what a different Billie we have here, one that is happy, vibrant and ready to swing. While these tracks can be found on Columbia's Quintessential series, which stretch to 9 volumes, it's nice to have most of the cream of the crop packed onto 2 CD's here. Interestingly, it omits the songs from the last 2 volumes which is comprised of mostly slow melancholic sentimental stuff. I was surprised not to find any dates or liner notes inside, maybe that's the tradeoff for the low priced set (only ..... for 2 CDs). Listening to a lot of her Verve recordings of late, it's really refreshing to hear Billie swing again and not worry about her voice being weak or out of it on these tracks. She sounds like she's taking charge of the material and doing her own original "thing" but never at the expense of the song's spirit.. While the debate rages on about whether these sides or her later Verve stuff is better, one thing remains clear: these songs and the way they are sung here are what put Billie on the map to jazz immortality. This is very much "feel good" music of Billie's Columbia stuff. Even on the sad lyrics of "I'll Get By" and "Mean to Me", Billie never strays far from her uplift swing. She's very much in the swing mold of Ella on these sides, but there's only ONE Billie.
an excellent compilation.......2000-08-31
Comprised of music that is available on Columbia's "Quintessential Billie Holiday" series, this 2 disc compilation gives us an interesting look at Lady Day during her years at that studio (1933-42). Her voice, not yet ravaged by years of drug addiction and alcoholism, is almost upbeat on most of these cuts, a marked contrast to the melancholia that accompanied much of her later recordings for Norman Granz at Verve records. Although Columbia could be accused of trying to to squeeze a few more dollars out of the "same old material", I think that this bargin priced set is an excellent introduction to Miss Holidays earlier work. Better liner notes would be helpful, a flaw that is evident in the whole "Cocktail Hour" series.
