Goldfinger (Soundtrack) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The third film in the James Bond series was the one that transformed 007 into a pop-cultural phenomenon (and turned Sean Connery into a star). It also set the tone for every Bond soundtrack to follow, featuring a huge title pop hit (which introduced the extraordinary Shirley Bassey-- long a superstar in England--to American audiences) and, of course, John Barry's loud, brassy instrumentals, some close enough to pass for rock 'n' roll. The wonderful "James Bond Theme" had been used in the first two flicks, but never this predominantly. Barry genuinely builds suspense, tension, and mystery within his sounds--and, along with McCartney's "Live and Let Die," the title song remains the best (and definitely the most haunting) of all the Bond-based title tunes. (You were going to suggest "A View to a Kill," perhaps?) In fact, after reaching No. 1 on the LP charts for three weeks in 1965, this went on to have such a pop-cultural effect that the Beatles would borrow the "James Bond Theme" for the intro to their own "Help," while years later, the postpunk band Magazine would score a huge British hit with a cool cover of "Goldfinger." Simply the best Bond all the way around. --Bill Holdship --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30
we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.
Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10
This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.
Fantastic collection of movie music.......2001-02-13
Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops never fail to disappoint. This is a rousing stirring collection of overtures and themes from some of Hollywood's biggest films. And what better piece to start off the album than the "20th Century Fox Fanfare". A lot, if not all, of these pieces will be familiar to movie lovers. Who can resist the beautiful "Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet" or the "Theme from Love Story". Then there's the heart pumping "Theme from Jaws" and the "Theme from Rocky". This is a terrific album, and belongs, not just in a music fans collection, but also a movie lovers.

Great Jazz Albumn.......2007-04-05
John Barry at his best! Beyond the unforgetable title song,
belted out by Shirley Bassy at her prime, the rest of the albumn plays like a 60"s jazz recording: brassy and strong.
I recomend this to any jazz fan.
Wonderful, Dramatic, Quality Lounge Jazz. For everyone!.......2007-02-14
I don't pretend to be an expert on the James Bond soundtracks , or the films. But, I do know that I really enjoy them and appreciate the excellent quality, gloss and showmanship that went into making these pieces of perfection. That being said....I LOVE this soundtrack! It has all of the best elements of the lounge genre, but also it has heart and and a certain timelessness that is hard to beat. Nothing can beat these 60's jazz influenced soundtracks for drama and sheer beauty. I totally recommend this to everyone!
Classic James Bond Soundtrack with more Tracks.......2006-11-28
The GOLDFINGER main title is perhaps the best song in the James Bond film series. INTO MIAMI is a great jazz intro. ALPINE DRIVE is very good in the way it combines the main title with fragments of the James Bond beat in the background. However, my favorite cut on this album has always been BOND BACK IN ACTION AGAIN. It is the best representation of the opening gun barrel version of the JAMES BOND THEME heard at the beginning of the film. The 4 missing cuts from the original British LP have been restored to this CD along with the instrumental version of GOLDFINGER. The re-mastering of the tracks on this CD is exceptional. They sound very good and clean eliminating a lot of original tape hiss greatly and improving the signal to noise ratio without loss to the musical content. The new packaging cover booklet contains interesting notes and color photos in an attractive layout.
GOES HAND IN HAND WITH THE FILM'S GREATNESS........2006-03-09
I never owned the original soundtrack on vinyl, so I'll take the word of the other reviewers who rave about the enhanced quality and production values on this CD. The tracks are well produced and I easily recall them with the appropriate scenes from the celluloid classic. That's the acid test with any movie music. And Bond obviously had no need for earmuffs with these sounds.

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

The good ole' stuff........2007-04-03
Goldfinger sure has changed over the years. They're no longer ska...infact they're quite the opposite. Their new material leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion and I've since lost interest in the band.
This a great album, bringing us back a decade ago into the world of ska-punk and all its charm. Funny enough, the album was very much a studio assembled piece of work. Although the core 4 members were a band already, there's a ton of cameos on the CD, including Scott and Dan from Reel Big Fish on horns, and Angelo Moore from Fishbone on saxaphone and backup vocals. This obviously to satisfy the at-the-time popularity of ska. Regardless, the result is great and very much missed among Goldfinger's new material.
The CD itself is a great mix of ska, punk, rock, and a fusion of all three. The album's most recognized track 'Superman', made famous by Tony Hawk Pro Skater, kicks the album off just right. Fast, catchy, and with plenty of horns. My personal favorite is 'Carlita'. It's an amazing ska rooted song, with just enough rock thrown in to get you through and wet your appetite. Angelo Moore's backups take it to the next level, and his sax solo's are simply amazing.
This is by far Goldfinger's best work, and it's a shame we won't hear anything like it from them anytime soon.
Pretty sweet.......2006-07-29
I love this album. There are a lot of good songs on it and there's quite a bit of variety on this. Some songs are fun, some are relaxing, and some are great to listen to when you're mad! Congrats on a great album, Goldfinger.
Classic.......2005-10-23
This is a classic 90s ska album. It's just perfect to sing along with. After this, Goldfinger just went downhill. There are a few songs today that are good, but most of them suck. Why did you get rid of the horns John? Whyyyyyyyyyyyy??????
this is talent.......2005-05-27
This is my favoriot CD. This was before the band got caught up in bad lyrics and peta.
Good stuff.......2004-12-16
This CD gives me some serious nostalgia, because the first track, "Superman", was featured on the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the N64 and PS1. It's a real throwback for me, and for the rest of you people who recognize it. As for the rest of the tracks, this album is quite listenable. I still don't get why the last track is 36 minutes long when only 8 minutes of it is really used for music. Stupid. But anyway, if you're just looking for some good punk, then get it.

classic.......2007-06-10
If you are a fan of punk/ska this is a must have classic album. It has some classic songs. These guys are pioneers of the 90's punk sound. BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
One of the best albums of the 90's.......2006-10-08
Dammmnnnn this album brings me back to a better time. Goldfinger's self titled album is truly a lost treasure. Along with Rancid and Green Day, Goldfinger were one of the few "punk/ska" bands to be able to cross over to MTV. Somehow though, Goldfinger wasn't able to hold onto that mainstream appeal. Maybe it's because after "Hang Up's" their sound changed so drastically. However in 1996 this album helped shape my life. From beginning to end this album is a relentless attack of pop punk and ska. Mind's Eye, Answers, Only a Day, Miles Away, Mabel, Here In My Bedroom are great songs, and in fact this entire album rocks. Although Goldfinger goes forgotten when discussing influential bands of the genre, this album in particular should be noted for what it was: Fun, fast, creative and catchy as hell.
Apparently Goldfinger is promising that their next album will be a return to the "old style" of G.Finger. We'll see (fingers crossed).
POP PUNKERS DELIGHT!!!!!!.......2006-02-02
I had no problem liking this CD back in the day. Ten years ago, we were introduced to a plague known as Pop Punk, that still threatens cool Junior High and High School kids everywhere, with gay (...)type music, that tricks kids into thinking they are above the realm of boy band fans, but really they are just being laughed at by the rest of us.
I was a wee young lad when this phony poser punk shlock came about. If you ask me, I blame Green Day's Dookie for starting it all, still many don't believe me, and hence.. the beast still lives.
However, within this realm of "Poser Punk", some bands still made it possible to rock out, while at the same time appeal to teenie boppers, and a mass radio appeal. GOLDFINGER, although, since their debut, have acheived little to no success, were one of those bands, that although may have been branded with the pop, or poser punk iron... still were pretty good. Some songs, I may even go as far to say, were pretty kick ass.
For instance ANSWERS is a pretty bitchin' song. I still put that one onto party mixes all the time! The song about L.A (I can't remember off the top of my head, AMAZON doesn't list a track list for this album)but was pretty rad too!
And the radio songs were far less gay than radio punk was about to become in the following few years. Kids, you may even find this disc to be somewhat hardcore. HERE IN YOUR BEDROOM, for instance... chicks LOVED that song. Pretty good riff. These songs were catchy, witty, punky, and they had some balls. Yeah, they did have some balls. Suck on that Billie Joe!
So great its depressing (that there is no more like it).......2005-12-05
Goldfinger is the band that got my musical tastes to where they are today. I originally fell in love with Hang-Ups and never really heard songs from this album till a few months ago, though I have heard pretty much all songs from others. I decided to download this album (later bought it) and it is my all time favorite album beating even Hang-ups. I depresses me (literally) that I can't find another band/album to match it. I hate how their music is changing. It's great they are singing about what they believe in but the music itself has gone downhill. I mean I still love them and always will but they should really try to release at least one song per album that brings back their original sound. And yes I do play this album at least once a week and I officially call it "my Happy Album" since hearing it esp while driving ALWAYS cheers me up tremendiously.
The best 90's punk.......2005-09-28
If you are looking for what gave pop/punk its roots this is the cd for you. It is great. Give a couple listens and you will be hooked. Happy listening!

A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20
If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.
Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25
Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Only the shrewdest music fan will remember that Goldfinger once threatened to trouble artists like No Doubt and Sugar Ray on the charts. The band's commercial stock has dipped since the runaway success of 1996's smirking ska-punk hit "Here in Your Bedroom," but, despite several key lineup changes, the members have worked hard to maintain a respectable level of belligerence in their music. If they were only younger and worked off those beer guts (and perhaps wore less clothing) they would undoubtedly give Blink-182 chase with adrenaline-packed songs like "Open Your Eyes" and "SpankBank." And if all were right in the world, "F*** Ted Nugent" ("I wish that he'd be gone / Chauvinistic Republican kills animals / He forgot how to write a song") would find a comfortable home on TRL. --Aidin Vaziri

Better Than Expected........2005-11-21
After reading a few reviews on how this is a disapointing album and not catchy i was drawn away from buying it, but, i love goldfinger and have ever since back in 1999 when i played the first tony hawk game i heard "superman" and fell in love with it. So, i saw this at cd wharehouse for 5 bucks so i picked it up just so i could give it a shot because its goldfinger. From the first track i really enjoyed it. It has alot of upbeat songs and few slow ones. IT could be a little better but its still good old goldfinger, but with no ska at all, i still like this though. I really enjoyed the 2 tracks "Going Home" and "FTN" because they were very fast and upbeat with great lyrics and especially on FTN, the lyrics were hilarious. WEll overall i liked this album and its not there best, but it is a good listen. I also look forward to purchasing Stomping Ground and Hng-Ups because as of now i only own this album, Open Your Eyes, and the Self-Titled.
This CD Brings Me Back..........2005-02-19
There is nothing special about this cd, it's simple, catchy, fun pop-punk. However, I listened to this cd during a somewhat rough time in my life, and I must say, it really helped me get through it. Now, whenever I listen to it, it brings back such a nostalgic feeling, and I love that. This is a great summer album. Don't expect too much from it, and you will enjoy it.
My favorite CD.......2004-11-25
Excellent lyrics, excellent beats. This is the goldfinger CD to buy, do NOT buy "Darin's Coconut Ass" because it's really bad compared to this.
Goldfinger-Open your eyes.......2004-08-22
When i first heard this CD was coming out i thought it would be a little more metal, but not at all. It is pop punk, or punk rock. They took the whole vegitarian thing a little too far, but it doesnt effect how good the music is. Its definatly official, goldfinger has no ska left in them, which kinda sucks. The Best songs are spokesman, descision, tell me, radio, and FTN. FTN is a really funny song that cusses about 50 times in a minute. Id say if you like any other goldfinger you'd like this too, even tho its slighty changed. You will also like this if you like Offspring, Green Day, or good charlotte. Overall this is a good, more mature sounding goldfinger CD.

A great idea, but incomplete.......2000-10-26
Erich Kunzel plays the Bond themes? What a great idea! In addition, there are a few more selections in the same vein, like the cops-n-robbers TV medley, music from The Untouchables, Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.
Sometimes, you want to listen to the 007 music in instrumental only, and Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops do a good job with the arrangements. But where are the rest of the songs? Missing are three of my all-time favorites, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker. I think the album would be better with 'more Bond, less other.' We certainly don't need TWO selections from Dick Tracy. And the theme from Darkman is stylistically quite similar to Dick Tracy; nothing is gained by playing both. Don't get me wrong; I like Danny Elfman (check out his "Beetlejuice" theme on Kunzel's 'Great Fantasy Adventure Album'). I just wanted to hear all my fave Bond pieces on the one CD.
Still, it's a keeper.
Excellent. The best of this style........1999-02-15
All I can say is listen to the Trumpet solo on goldfinger. The best

Endearing Collection of Montovani Film Music.......2006-09-28
This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.
Movies and Mantovani Make Magnificent Musical Memories. .......2005-04-18
In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.
