The first time I heard this CD I liked it. The second time I listened I really started to get into it and to enjoy the gift that Idina Menzel wants to share. A powerful voice with vunerable lyrics. It's a great combination!!!

Why is Idina Menzel's name not splashed on the covers of magazines? She's got the looks, she's got the connections(hello, ultra famous husband?) and she's got the talent-ten times more than any simpleton on the music scene right now.
A fan to the core, I admire Idina from way back in the day-Rent OBC-to the more recent projects-Wicked, Rent the movie, etc etc. and I can say that this is by far the best exhibition of her talent. Why is this not an international bestseller? This is truly beyond me.
Menzel has an incredible voice, and amazing song writing skills. The songs she sings are so full of that very Idina-y personality that you just can't get anywhere else. Who else could pull off a "Think Too Much"....genius. I've never thought about Guys in Tuxedos before listening to this song, but now that I think about it, they are kind of decieving. She has that blues-y charm and deep voice that despite what you may say would knock Shoshana Bean on her kiester and blows everyone and anyone out of the park. I highly, highly reccomend this CD for anyone who likes pop,rock,blues,jazz, broadway, or just plain talent.

This is one HECK of a first album! The songs are awesome to sing and dance to. The song that definately deserves the title of "Best Song" is a combo of "Planet Z," "Minuet," and the title song, "Still I Can't Be Still". This, and any of Idina's work, is worth getting, just to hear that VOICE!

If you love Idina Menzel in either of her major broadway roles, you will love this CD. The lyrics seem a little random, but I get the feeling, that is Idina for you. Having written all the lyrics herself, she preforms them with a passion and formiliarity, not all artist acheive. I would and have recomended this Cd to anyone who has at least heard of Idina. I love it.

I FEEL THAT THIS CD IS VERY GOOD! SOME OF THE SONGS ARE VERY EARLY 70'S SOUNDING. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF SONGS THAT IDINA SINGS THAT REALLY SHOW OFF HER VOICE!! THOSE ARE AWSOME!! IT'S A GOOD STARTER ALBUM!! I WISH IT HAD MORE SOUL SINGING SONGS, BUT VERY GOOD!

This is an excellent CD with a very generous number of tracks at an excellent price. Anyone who likes music of the 1930's will enjoy this album. Highly recommended. Great service too. Would recommend seller.

    This CD has been one of my faves. It was one of my first Jazz CD's. I lost the CD and I'm glad I finally found it again. The songs are stuck in my head and they are easy to listen to. You'll be humming these songs for days. Sultry Frankie and Johnny to Perfidia. They all are GREAT!!

    I am an amateur jazz enthusiast that was turned on to this compilation by an ex-lover. We would listen to this CD together on long car rides or late into summer evenings on a veranda overlooking the city of Chicago, smoking cigars and taking in the pulse of the night. What is so special about this particular CD is that the balance of the variety of the songs mirror the ups and downs of a relationship when you share the CD with a partner. While enjoying this aspect of the CD the listner is also exposed to a wide spectrum of quality artists and songs - A great introduction into jazz that can serve as a platform for further development and exploration. Regardless of your relationships, this CD should serve as a solid addition to your music collection.

    4 out of 5 stars Capitol Jazz's Great Collection of Great Gershwin Songs.......2006-12-22

    I bought this disc when it first came out. This is quite a collection. All of the tracks are at least very good with the lower tier being the more buttery-flavored songs, but much of it is cannot-do-without greatness. Over the years that I've owned the disc, I've given it a lot of use.

    The other reviewer here says "Nina Simone's smoldering 'Summertime' is worth the price of the disc," and he's right; it's that good. This track captivates and mesmerizes from the very first note to the last; I was petrified. Also, Carmen McRae's The Man I Love is wonderfully done from beginning to finish with a great orchestral arrangement; one of the best songs from the disc--a masterpiece of surrealist sound. Chet Baker's But Not For Me is a great tune and Chet's trumpet-playing solo is just quiet enough to keep the mood in the right place; I can remember every note of it running through my memory quite as plainly as if I was listening to it at this instant, although a lot of the disc is that good too. Annie Ross's rendition of I Was Doing All Right is very good, and it has Zoot Sims playing the saxophone, who is, I think, a great jazz artist and saxophone soloist, having played with many other greats like Lionel Hampton. Track 9, Beverly Kenney's It Ain't Necessarily So is a very interesting version of the song which I never would've thought could possibly be any good: she sings the whole song duet against a single bongo player, but the two play off each other with such minimalist perfection that one can't help but be drawn in to the unusual, improvisational sound. They All Laughed sung by David Allyn, is great in the big-band jazz variation with an orchestra so tightly in unison that it can turn on a dime. Mel Torme's Do, Do, Do is an interesting formation of romanticism, and a very nice-sounding rendition. Dakota Staton's A Foggy Day is so loud and cheerful, it almost sounds psychotically so, and the vibraphone and trombone fits; Staton and the orchestra sound great together with just enough precision in the arrangement, excellent soloing including the trombonist, and scatting by Staton that sends this tune way over the top.

    All of these songs are kept short, except for the last one which is I think over six minutes, but it is the most heart-wrenching six minutes of the disc, if not all discs. Overall, this is a great collection by Capitol Records: the cream of the label.

    Nina Simone's smoldering "Summertime" is worth the price of the disc! I have tracked down at least 8 copies of this disc to give to family & friends. Always uplifting to listen to.

        Honored by the Ballroom Operators of America eight times, Les Brown is most famous for his dance music, and he chose his singers because they added to his pretty, "danceable" sound, not for their creativity, originality, or jazz talent. Of all his singers, Doris Day, with him in the early 1940s, is the most famous, the only one who made the leap to a solo career and a long run as a movie star in musical comedies. The songs here are standards, sung by the singers hired by Brown during the late 1930s through 1950s--Betty Bonney, Eileen Wilson, Lucy Ann Polk, Gordon Drake--not names that ring bells now, except in Les Brown's own recordings.

        Doris Day's star quality is noticeable in her three songs--"Sentimental Journey," "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time," and "Day by Day"--all songs that were big hits for her and the band. Unfortunately, while the other tracks are easy to listen to--and even easier to dance to--there are no star turns and little excitement in the remaining ballads. Brown's saxophonist, Butch Stone, known as the comedian of the band and a sometime singer, does put his humor to work in one of the best tracks--his version of Louis Prima's novelty song "Robin Hood"--while Les Brown's younger brother, Stumpy Brown, a trombonist, sings a jivey "Just a Gigolo" in bop style. The CD is pleasant, easy listening with many unfamiliar vocalists who enhance the band's style, but it is background music, not music that creates its own interest. n Mary Whipple
