Jazz Memories

Editorial Reviews
Tony Bennett, artist, October 16, 2001
"It is the best compilation of the masters of the Golden Age of jazz ever produced! An instant classic."

All Music Guide, November 2001
A magnificent collection of jazz history and one any collector, student, educator or jazz enthusiast would appreciate. A must have.

Album Description
JAZZ MEMORIES takes a trip back to the Golden Age of jazz. Clifford Brown and Max Roach were wailing away over at Basin Street. Thelonious Monk was holding court at the Five Spot. Count Basie's mighty orchestra was raising the temperature to the boiling point up at Birdland. It was a miraculous time when everyone from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, to Swing Era sages like Roy Eldridge and Lester Young to bop innovators like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to second generation modernists like Miles Davis, Stan Getz and Clifford Brown were all alive and well and playing at their brilliant best.

A beautiful 72-page book offers unforgettable images of these jazz masters by the great photographer Herman Leonard, who was always there when the action was going down. Two CDs overflowing with extraordinary music, complement the sensitivity and artistry of these photographs, forming an audio-visual gallery of some of the finest, most soulful jazz ever recorded by over 30 of its greatest practitioners. Intimate session stories about each performance enrich the listener’s experience by detailing exactly what went down in the studio while these recordings were taking place.

We are sure that all jazz fans will appreciate the extraordinary effort and love that have gone into the making of Jazz Memories.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of High School and College.......2007-03-22

I already owned this one, and bought it for a high school and college classmate who had fond memories of the songs on this recording. As one can imagine, it was "a hit". Delivered on time, as usual.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection, but short.......2005-11-16

Whenever you think of 50's music, you usually think of rock & roll, yet that never grew until 1955. So, what was around in the 50's til then? That's why I bought this CD.

Surprisingly, some of the songs on here wouldn't be too out of place on a 50's RnR album, most notably, "How High the Moon", "Cry" and "Come On-a My House", all from 1951. The rest is post-war pop.

The least interesting thing about this album is that the 10 songs here are so short that the album doesn't even last half an hour. Like others have said about the series, they should've included more than 10 songs. Still, it's a worthwhile album if you're into vintage pop.

IT'S EVERYTHING I REMEMBER I AM FROM THAT ERA. BOUGHT IT FOR CLASS REUNION OF 1953.LOVE ALL BUT LAST SONG. BUY IT!!!!

If you are a Cal Tjader and Poncho Sanchez fanatico as I am, then you must add this cd to your collection. Poncho picked some of Cal's classic songs & takes them to a higher level.... Song for Cal is a special tribute to his early mentor. It's my favorite Poncho CD. Ruben Estrada is outstanding on the vibes. I'm sure Cal is looking down from heaven & waving a white flag, saying Bravo Poncho Bravo......

5 out of 5 stars Torch music of the highest quality.......2005-01-24

Two albums from 1958 filled with love songs from an even earlier era sung by what I regard as the finest torch singer of the lot - that's what you get here. eri knew her limitations and worked within them, singing only ballads with only a little variation in tempo, which won't suit everybody but I love it. On these albums, Jeri is backed by an orchestra, which manages to restrain itself nicely.

Drawing on songs composed by some of America's finest songwriters of the first half of the last century (Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Yip Harburg and others), these two albums feature a few famous songs such as Lazy bones and Yesterdays, but however famous or obscure the songs, Jeri's performances are impeccable.

There are so many great songs here but among the highlights are Down with love, Ridin' high, I like the likes of you, Spring will be a little late this year, Deep in a dream and Maybe I love you too much.

If you are a fan of Jeri's music, or if you enjoy the music of Peggy Lee, Julie London, June Christie, Gogi Grant and other similar singers, you'll love this twofer.

5 out of 5 stars First and Last.......2001-06-15

"Southern Breeze" was the first of Jeri's three albums on Roulette, a great Marty Paich-arranged album with a scorching vocal on "Porgy" and a lot else going for it. "Coffee..." was the last Roulette album, arranged hauntingly by Lennie Hayton, who really knew how to showcase Jeri's voice and style. This is one of the truly great torch albums, a legend in its time. Both albums add up to great listening and you'll play them over and over because there's so much to hear each time in Jeri's interpretations.

        5 out of 5 stars Massage Music.......2007-03-29

I buy anything from this artist. His music is probably the best I have found to use when I am giving a massage. I am a massage therapist, and in my mind, the background music I use is about 30% of the effectiveness of the massage, so I always try to use music that will calm, soothe , and help relax my clients. The work of Michael Hoppe always does the trick.

          Album Description

One of the truly great vocalists of the swing era,Maxine Sullivan (along with her husband - the great bandleaderJohn Kirby), had the unique distinction of being the first BlackJazz stars to have their own weekly radio show. Maxine's firstrecording session in 1937 produced her biggest hit - "Loch Lomond," ajazz interpretation of a Scottish folk song that remained her signaturetune throughout her five decade long career. This legendary 1956 sessionmarked a return to recording for Maxine after a long absence from thestudio, and found her in the company of jazz giants Milt Hinton, BusterBailey, Jerome Richardson, Dick Hyman and Charlie Shavers. Thesession was produced by the great jazz historian Leonard Feather whoassembled the cast of all-stars especially for this recording which manybelieve to be the best of Ms. Sullivan's career. The album was a specialtribute to one of jazz music's greatest songwriters, Andy Razaf ("Ain'tMisbehavin'," "Honeysuckle Rose.") As an added bonus, we haveincluded two bonus tracks including an updated version of Maxine'sbiggest hit "Loch Lomond" recorded that same year.

Drummer Ben Riley played with Thelonious Monk in one of the pianist/composer's finest bands, the indefatigable quartet of the mid-60s, and Riley has been one of Monk's greatest advocates ever since, including this sparkling, joyous septet. Don Sickler wrote the arrangements for the band, devising an original approach to orchestrating Monk without a piano by combining guitar with his own trumpet and three saxophones, often to mimic Monk's original accompaniments. The resulting clarity highlights Riley's subtly propulsive drumming and a general fidelity to Monk's style of melodic improvisation, most notably by newcomer Wayne Escoffery on tenor. Along with some of Monk's best-known tunes ("Rhythm-A-Ning" and "Straight, No Chaser" stand out), the band offers fine versions of three witty and obscure gems that Monk wrote for a 1955 Gigi Gryce session: "Gallop's Gallop," "Brake's Sake," and "Shuffle Boil." They're evidence of Riley and Sickler's thoughtful and thorough appreciation of modern jazz's greatest composer. --Stuart Broomer

Now here's a tribute album with a twist... Riley & Co. play the music of Thelonious Monk in a pianoless septet. Instead of having a pianist do a second rate Monk imitation, 4 horns and a guitar are used to reproduce Monk's inimitable piano voicings. Ben Riley is in fine form, and trumpeter Don Sickler's arrangements really make Monk's tunes sound completely original, making the album much more than a tribute. Rudy Van Gelder's engineering is also top notch; the mix sounds like a sensual massage for the ears. A stellar package. Any Monk or jazz fan will eat this up.
