Customer Reviews:
Not Good.......2007-04-05
Super cheesy, sub-standard lounge music. Really bad. Take my word; save yourself some time and avoid this.
Best of the EMI 2fers.......2004-06-18
The EMI twofers series are excellent. The choice of material and the caliber of the mastering are superior in most cases. I have many and all of the Julie London issues. This one is for my taste the best of the Julie London 2fers and one of the two best of all of the twofers (the other is a Nat Cole). This show cases Julie in smaller group settings for the most part. Featured often is the recently departed BARNEY KESSEL, his accompaniement work alone is worth the purchase price. Having Julie's lovely voice, the always tastefull arrangements and the ambitious song selections in one package, makes this reissue a steal and essential listening. Buy it now, thank me later. A well deserved 5 stars.
Two brilliant albums from 1960.......2003-04-05
Typical of Julie's music, these two albums are filled mainly with romantic love songs from the Great American Songbook. Julie always covered songs that suited her style, regardless of whoever the original artist was.
On these albums, you will find covers of songs that were originally hits for Johnny Mathis (Misty), Doris Day (Sentimental journey), Peggy Lee (Black coffee, Don't smoke in bed), Libby Holman (You and the night and the music), Kay Kyser (You stepped out of a dream), Dinah Shore (You'd be so nice to come home to), Sammy Kaye (Let there be love) and Harry James (But not for me), to name just a few.
These albums do not contain anything to surprise Julie's existing fans. Her early albums generally featured sparse backing, while her later albums featured a fuller sound. The second of these albums suggest the start of the transition.
If you enjoy Julie's music, you will find that these albums live up to expectations.
A Thimbleful of voice.......2003-03-21
Before Norah Jones there was Julie London (who described her voice as a thimbleful). Both are welcome as Rock becomes old hat.
Tasty.......2002-11-01
Here's Julie in two excellent jazz albums, with top-of-the-line songs and the very best West Coast instrumentalists, great arrangements and super sound engineering. She's intimate, persuasive, technically excellent and gives every lyric its due. Beautiful listening. But, now, about "Julie At Home" being recorded in her living room. How could that be done actually? Julie's voice clearly is separate from the instrumentals, accomplished in the studio with a vocal booth. There's no sounds from the house or outside, no phones ringing, no sound bleeding as would occur from mike to mike in a live setting. Methinks this really was done in the studio. Does anyone out there know for sure?

A masterpiece.......2004-02-03
The melody that gives the title to this cd, "On Broadway" is a masterpiece of arrangement: every instrument is on the very right key and it truly makes you live that very special feeling that you only get every once in a while with very special music. Listen to it, you will buy it instantly.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20
Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.
fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15
no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.
