Biography – Nanette Natal

b. 10 June 1945, Brooklyn, New York. Nanette Natal's singing career began as a teen in the 1960s with the Helen Hayes Young People's Theater Guild. She then went on to work the Bitter End Coffee House Circuit and such venues as the Gaslight, The Orpheum Theatre, Bottom Line and the Cafe Au Go Go, and recorded with Vanguard and EVOLUTION records. Performing her own material, which developed into blues and rock, she accompanied herself with a guitar and toured universities and concert halls throughout the country.

In the late 70s while singing Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" during a pop recording session at Columbia Records, she changed the phrasing dramatically and subsequently was told by a prominent engineer that she had the soul of a jazz singer. This moment was a turning point in Nanette's musical life. Stifled creatively by a string of recording contracts, Nanette set out on a path of developing her own production company, Benyo Music Productions.

In the early 80s, she became a strong influence on the New York Downtown jazz loft scene, with long stints at the Tin Palace and Seventh Avenue South.

Compared all the time to Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald for an incredible vocal range and scatting ability respectively, she is one of the most extraordinary singers and live performers today. The measure of her success has always been about the integrity of the art.

Her main inspirational sources have been Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Henry Mancini and Duke Ellington. Nanette Natal is also a composer of considerable merit. Album Description
New Yorker Nanette Natal continues her vocal quest for a sophisticated and daring exploration of standard material. The album has just seven cuts, but there is just under a hour of music, which means that each tune receives extended attention from the group, giving them plenty of time to explore every nook and cranny, every twist and turn on the melody. Natal is one of the preeminent apostles of scatting and wordless vocalizing; in her improvisional approach and in her voice, she draws upon the likes of such artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Sheila Jordan and Jeanne Lee. On "When Your Love Has Gone," she stretches the words to their breaking point. "Fascinating Rhythm" is a duet with the snare drum of percussionist Todd Turkisher; keeping the listener's attention for almost six minutes with this spare instrumentation is quite a feat. The highlight of the album is a 10½-minute offering of "I Won't Dance." Improvisional treatments of this length are a challenge -- too often the musicians run out of ideas before the tune ends, or their playing becomes banal. Not so here. The four instrumentalists come together like the John Coltrane Quartet, with the alto saxophone added and Natal's vocal jaunting assuming the Coltrane tenor part. This recalls the interchanges between Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley when they were with Miles Davis . Natal adds sweetness to her passion for a straightforward rendition of "Crazy He Calls Me," aided and abetted by a plaintive Mark Soskin piano. As this is a recording of the first set of a 1990 live session from Birdland in New York, the audience and the musicians were ready for something less hectic so they could catch their breath. But the group gets back to the extemporizing mode for "You Go to My Head." Palermo's alto kicks things off with an understated opening chorus, punctuated from time to time by Turkisher's drums. Natal comes in with an off-center and curiously accented exposition of the melody with Soskin's piano sneaking in and out. About halfway through, Natal begins her wordless vocal gyrations, sounding on occasion like a snake charmer's flute. Palermo and Soskin then take over for about three more minutes of creative playing, with Natal coming in with the lyrics to end the proceedings and providing a fitting coda to an innovative, entertaining album. – AMG

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

In 1965 Baker returned to the US and in a massive recording session, recorded enough material for 5 LPs. These were later reissued on 3 CDs; although the music on all of them is consistently good, this one is the best of the three. "Cherokee" and "Bevan beeps" are excellent, as are the 2 blues compositions "Chabootie" and "Carpsie's groove," both taken fairly slow. George Coleman on tenor and Kirk Lightsey on piano are in great form, too. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars JALOUSIE/ STAR DUST- Arthur Fiedler & The Boston Pops.......2007-02-22

If you're a classical music lover, you can't go wrong with this great combination of two nostalgic gems, originally recorded on Lp format by Arthur Fiedler, conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra.
"Jalousie" was definitely one of Fiedler's finest works. The album theme "Jalousie" or "Jealousie" based on a tango composed by Gade, is a work of art. I first heard Fiedler's version of this great music master piece watching the old "B.F.Goodrich" musical program on television back during the early 60's and I immediately realized Fiedler's Boston Pops version of this great classic was absolutely the very best I have ever heard. This great album is complemented by other gorgeous classics, like "Il Guarany", "Jamaican Rhumba" "Danze Piemontese" and others. The second album included on this CD "Stardust" is another recorded milestone by Fiedler, "Stardust", "Clair de Lune" and other beautiful classics will simply delight you. Maestro Arthur Fiedler will always be remembered by music fans as Mr.Boston Pops. Fortunately a portion of his musical works with the Pops have been re-issued for us to enjoy and reminisce. I very highly recommend it. Do not miss this one.
