What a Diff'rence a Day Makes! [Gold CD]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Dinah Washington had already enjoyed a career as a jazz and R&B singer when her 1959 recording of "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" catapulted her to a new kind of popularity. Henceforth she would devote herself to singing ballads with orchestral backing. Though purists might object, the very gifts that distinguished her R&B singing remain in the later pop phase. Hers is one of the great sounds, a voice at once strong and breathy, with a focus that turns every note and every word into a richly nuanced event, uniquely shaped and loaded with meaning. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:
Dinah's invisible yet all-caressing voice will always linger in my mind..........2007-04-25
Dinah Washington possessed a singularly beautiful voice that remains instantly unforgettable to this day. Dinah instinctively knew how to take a song and make it her own using her excellent diction and beautiful voice. Her voice is not unlike Billie Holiday's in that you can sense each and every nuance of all the emotions in the world in every single syllable Dinah ever sang. This CD gives us an excellent look at Dinah's strong ability to sing great ballads about the joy of love and love gone awry. Dinah makes each ballad into a type of symphony that very few singers could ever hope to recreate.
The CD track set starts off with the beautiful "I Remember You." Dinah sings the first few bars a Capella; and this REALLY shows off her exquisite voice and perfect diction. The musical arrangement that then begins enhances the beauty of the melody with strings, percussion, flute and piano while never detracting so much as an ounce from Dinah's powerful voice. The chorus sings well, too.
Other special numbers on this CD include a haunting rendition of "Cry me A River" with Dinah's voice gliding through the lyrics like a flowing melody all its own. The musical arrangement and the chorus help; but Dinah carries this song without question. "What A Diff'rence A Day Made" displays Dinah's thoughtfulness once again; she takes the song's title "What A Diff'rence A Day Makes" and changes "Makes" to "Made" and this tiny little shift alone makes the ballad even more beautiful than it was before. Dinah's attention to every last detail always made her performance stronger and more commanding; you can't help but focus on the sound of her beautiful voice whenever you hear it.
"Manhattan" gives Dinah the chance to belt out this classic love ballad once again in her own way. You'll notice how Dinah used the subtlest changes in rhythm and enunciation of syllables to evoke strong emotional reactions from her audience. The musical arrangement positively shines while the chorus in the background harmonizes perfectly, too!
One bonus of this CD is that you get three extra tracks: you get the first version of "Time After Time" in addition to the version that made it to the record album final cut; and you'll enjoy "Come On Home," too. Dinah does a superb job with "It Could Happen To You;" and I confess I don't know why this masterpiece was not released on the record album. Dinah sings "It Could Happen To You" so skillfully with a special degree of sensitivity that I rarely hear.
The liner notes include an excellent essay about Dinah's career by Al Young; and the art work exceeds my expectations with great use of colors and prints. The photos of Dinah are wonderful to look at as well; and the extra bonus track of Dinah joking with her peers shows how Dinah really enjoyed herself when she recorded this fine music.
It would be misleading to state that Dinah Washington truly left this world when she passed so prematurely in late 1962. Indeed, Dinah lives on very well through her music. There are dozens of Dinah Washington CDs out there; and this one is certainly a "must-have" for Dinah Washington fans. I also recommend this CD for people who enjoy classic pop vocals and easy listening music from the late 1950s.
Classic Vocal.......2006-08-31
I have the LP of the same. Listening to the recordings again bought chills to my body. Wonderfully romantic.
What a beautiful voice!.......2006-02-17
I have heard of Dinah Washington but had no idea what a totally beautiful voice she had. What a romantic album! I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys dreamy lovely music. I will certainly purchase more of her music.
Great singer, great songs, awful arrangements.......2002-06-17
Dinah was at his best back then. She sang these american standards brilliantly. It's such a shame that the arrangements made this record unbareble. Really, ever since I bought other Dina's Cds (e.g.: Swingin' Ms. D) , I have never returned to this very one. But the most terrible side effect of the comercial success of this recording in 1959, is that for the following years all arrangers have insisted in the same sounding approach. That is why it is very rare to find uptempo swinging tracks among her last recordings, which I personally think it is when she found her best. That is a real shame! ....
Amazing sonsgtress, magnificent musicality of Washington.......2001-02-14
I think Dinah Washington sounds best vocally in this compilation of ballads and standards. This is a CD where the songs show off the magnificent voice and musicality of Dinah Washington. I have heard her other CD's but for me, this is one CD which I can play in the background as I eat my favorite foods during a quiet and rainy afternoon and think about the day that has passed. Quiet times with a musician of her great artistry mark this CD of Miss Washington... extraordinary voice and delivery.

What a Diff'rence a "Class-Act" Makes! .......2007-02-13
I was first introduced to this Artist in the late 70's via a very kind
man donated many of his 'old' jazz records to me (lucky me,heh?)...it was
hot then, and it's still hot...it has timeless cool all over it...from
the musical arrangement, the great writing context, and most of all the
dynamic and strong vocal delivery of Ms.Esther Phillips!...I was totally
psyched to have found it again remastered and available on disc...I'll be
watching the mail in great anticipation...Peace-Out****
What a Diff'rence..........2006-12-21
A Classic Release from Ester Phillips. What'd she do with that snake after the picture was taken? Hmmmm...wink! wink!
Esther Phillips Goes Disco.......2006-07-17
Don't get me wrong here, I loved Disco--and I worshipped Creed Taylor and his engineer Rudy Van Gelder. These guys are jazz Gods, and have produced some of the greatest jazz records ever.
Esther Phillips is a jazz and standars legend, at the downhill slope of a great career in 1975 at the height of Disco craze.
So Creed Taylor delegates the music arrangements to guitarist Joe Beck who produces a Disco Standards Jazz album, in an effort to bolster her failing career. Regretably, Creed Taylor didn't succeed, and neither does this CD.
This is an awful marriage of musical styles which doesn't fit and doesn't translate very well to the year 2006. It sounds dated, because it is; It sounds forced, because I'm sure Ms. Phillips abhored Disco; and I just can't get into a Disco album by Creed Taylor.
If you can hold your nose and ears long enough to sift through some of the musical breaks, the solos are terrific, with Joe Beck wailing on guitar, backed up by the Brecker Brothers and David Sanborn. The standard, What a Difference a Day Makes have never sounded better in the musical breaks, but the tempo is unfamiliar and will puzzle jazz purists.
If you like Esther Phillips, pick another CD.
If you like Disco, try the Bee Gees.
If you want funky up tempo musicianship by these same musicians, try any one of the Brecker Brother Albums, or better yet "Beck" with David Sanborn and Joe Beck, a terrific CD.
But I would pass on this Disco Jazz Standard experiment.
bursting at the seams with character.......2005-06-13
Esther Phillips shines on this record as a unique, capable, and brilliant lead singer. The mix is handled in an equally deft manner, allowing dynamics to flow through the music, the result being a record that begs to be turned up.
The upbeat songs stand out on the record, demonstrating a smoky, loungey character thats supplies some much needed texture to disco backing.
An all around classic for lovers of unique, funk, soul and R&B records.
A welcome reissue of a career boosting classic........2002-06-18
For her fifth album for Creed Taylor's CTI label the label boss gave production duties to Joe Beck. The result was to be like nothing else that she had recorded before, both in the scope of the material and in the luminary band and orchestra that was assembled for the sessions. The album was the result of three sessions stretched over late April/Early May 1971, and the quality of the cuts and the choice of material has stood up well in the intervening years. The hit, "What a difference a day makes" appears in two forms and two tempos, the released track clocks in at 4.30 and the bonus cut at 3.10. My favourite tracks are the great version of Kenny Gamble/Leon Huff's "One night affair" (she had lived that one!), an excellent reading of "I can stand a little rain" and a belting version of Lu Emerson's "Hurtin' House". Less successful, and slightly dated is the reading of "Oh Papa". Special mention for Michael Brecker on Tenor sax, and the four piece trumpet section, as well as Joe Beck's guitar. It's still a fine, varied album that produced the hit, and put her career back on track. A great shame that neither of the follow up albums consolidated the situation, but this is a great reminder of what she could do.It's also a great counterpoint to the Rhino compilation "The best of Esther Phillips"

Whisper??? Dinah...the Divine.......2000-12-06
Have you heard Dinah sing the word "whisper"? No real fan of this DIVA should miss that word murmured (twice) by Dinah in "September In The Rain". This music will surely outlive us as well as Dinah but...in the mean time...we can especially treasure some of these less obvious, but incredible, tracks too: I Concentrate On You, Trust In Me, I Won't Cry Anymore, Our Love Is Here To Stay. This was also Quincy Jones in the early 60's! Great moments in music history!
