At least Rod Stewart is consistent. Long accused by critics of selling his considerable interpretative talents short and playing it safe for the trappings of fame, Stewart revisits the font of his latest career revival here. But while 2002's It Had To Be You at least turned on the novelty of hearing raspy Rod the Mod tackle a slate of American pop standards with a boozy, world-weary tone that sometimes reinforced the originals' intent with trans-generational flair, the British rock icon unfortunately reverted to form a year later on this 14-track sequel. Set against the laconic, cocktail-friendly productions of vets Richard Perry and Phil Ramone, Stewart's performances seem strangely detached throughout. Even when offered the chance at some real human interaction on a pair of ill-conceived duets with Cher (who at least attempts to bring some dramatic flair to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered") and Queen Latifah (whose recent turn in Chicago informs the title track), Stewart seems almost blissfully unaware of their presence. These are songs that virtually demand to be acted out, not phoned in. Brilliant vocal performances often reinforce the notion of "the singer, not the song;" here that old adage sounds more like a suggestion of where to place the blame for this album's disappointments. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Produced again by luminaries Richard Perry, Phil Ramone and Clive Davis, Volume II consists of 14 all-timers such as "I'm In The Mood For Love," "Smile," "As Time Goes By," "I Only Have Eyes For You," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "Til' There Was You," and a delicious duet with Cher on "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered," with the almost-never-heard original sexy lyrics.

I got this CD along with "Thanks for the Memories" by Rod Stewart for my dad and he absolutely loves them. Next time I see him, he said he would save a dance or two for me. Great music!
Smooth and Easy Listening.......2007-01-11
Can't go wrong with this CD and it will keep your feet tapping.
Not Happy.......2007-01-11
I ordered this item thru Amazon but with another company. I never received the album and could not get them to respond to my e-mails.
I finally called Amazon and they refunded my money. Amazon is a stand up company; just don't get envolved with and of there sub companys.
I've since ordered many things from Amazon and usually can't believe how fast they get things to me.

As Time Goes By: The Best of Jimmy Durante.......2007-06-08
I'm a Durante fan, but the CD - bought for The Spouse - was a disappointment in many respects.
Classic Movie Themes by Royal Philharmonic.......2007-03-19
Very disappointed in the CD. The orchestration is very dull and boring. I doubt I will spend any time listening to it.
Just Wonderful.......2007-02-12
I owned this cd but somehow lost it so I bought it again on Amazon.
Jimmy Durante was a comic but he had a truly effective singing voice, very moving. Rough but with perfect timing and pitch.
This cd collection has some of my favorites like September Song, Make Someone Happy, and Hello, Young Lovers. Nobody does these songs as good as Durante.
Awsome.......2007-01-15
I first listen to Jimmy Durante, when I was a young child, because of my PopPop(grandfather). I grew up still enjoying his music. I now have one of my nephews listing to him. Great music lives on. I'm 33 and my nephew is 3. We both love good old fashioned tunes. You should give this CD a try.
A great addition to a musical collection........2006-08-19
A late night viewing of "Sleepless in Seattle" prompted us to locate a copy of the Jimmy Durante music. We love it and have enjoyed exposing this type of music to the younger members of our family.

"As Time Goes By ... Beegie Adair ... Village Square Music (2007)".......2007-04-30
Village Square Music presents "AS TIME GOES BY", featuring Beegie Adair one of the best kept secrets around...but the word, or should we say music is getting out there --- if you haven't discovered Beegie Adair yet, you don't know what you've been missing --- About her music Adair says, "Falling in love with jazz is like falling in love with a person, except with jazz you never get over it." --- Once in a while a musician comes along with impeccable technique, deep understanding of the jazz repertoire, an innate tendency to swing and the rare ability to communicate the heart and soul of a tune to listeners. That musician is Beegie Adair.
She performs solo and with the Beegie Adair Trio, whose members include drummer Chris Brown, a veteran of the Maynard Ferguson ensemble, and bassist Roger Spencer, who has played with the Les Brown Band, Ray Conniff, the Page Cavanaugh Trio and Pete Jolly. They are, she says, my main guys. They're so tuned into the way I visualize music that its effortless to play with them.
Adair's performance is impeccable, the renditions are simply from the heart...one can hardly pick a stand out, entire recording draws on slow tempos with blends of original sentiment and gorgeous melodies in the order in which they appear:
I'LL REMEMBER APRIL - Phantom Lady (1944) - Starring Franchot Tone & Ella Raines
IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING - State Fair (1945) - Starring Jeanne Crain, Dana Andrews, Dick Haymes & Vivian Blaine
AS TIME GOES BY - Casablanca (1942) - Starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid & Claude Rains,
ON THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA AND THE SANTA FE - The Harvey Girls (1946) - Starring Judy Garland, John Hodiak & Ray Bolger
INVITATION - A Life Of Her Own (1950) - Starring Lana Turner & Ray Milland
SWINGIN' ON A STAR - Going My Way (1944) - Starring Bing Crosby & Barry Fitzgerald
GOLDEN EARRINGS- Golden Earrings (1947) - Starring Ray Milland & Marlene Dietrich
GREEN DOLPHIN STREET - Green Dolphin Street (1947) - Starring Lana Turner & Van Heflin
OVER THE RAINBOW - The Wizard Of Oz (1939) - Starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke & Margaret Hamilton
STELLA BY STARLIGHT- The Uninvited (1944) - Starring Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey & Gail Russell
BUTTONS & BOWS- The Pale Face (1948) - Starring Bob Hope & Jane Russell
WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR (1940) - Pinocchio - The song from Pinocchio, "When You Wish Upon A Star" was ranked #7 in the 2004 American Film Institute's List of the "Top Movie Songs of All Time", the highest ranking song on the list among Disney animated films.
Citing George Shearing, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Erroll Garner among her influences, Adair has recorded 20 CDs, ranging from Cole Porter standards to Frank Sinatra classics to romantic World War II ballads. Her 6-CD Centennial Composers Collection of tunes by Rodgers, Gershwin, Kern, Ellington, Carmichael and Berlin became an instant collectible classic when it was released in 2002.
Give a listen to the American standards that have stood the test of time and will go on forever...Beegie's performance on each track is simply touching with a tear in your eye --- completely gets under your skin and you're loving every minute of it ... the album plays like fine wine and flows very easy on the ears --- once again Village Square comes through with a must have for all music lovers and fans...every arrangement has that we'll be together again, with the same sensitivity and tender loving care as their previous album
Hats off to producer Jack Jezzro, executive producer Greg Howard ...recorded and mixed by Brandon Harkin at Wildwood Recording, Brentwood, Tennessee and mastered by Mike Haynes of 440 Digital, Nashville, TN --- after 12 tracks it does leave you wanting more --- and we know they'll be more down the road --- if you enjoyed this album, why do not try another new release "Sentimental Journey" (Village Square 3055) featuring The Beegie Adair Trio, with Roger Spencer on bass and Chris Brown on drums --- relive the music of World War II with a smooth blend of instrumental jazz --- just the way we like it ... THE BEEGIE ADAIR TRIO!

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.
Somewhere Over The Rainbow.......2006-02-24

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

No stranger to covers, Bryan Ferry has often opted for classics from other times and places. As Time Goes By focuses on music largely from the 1930s and '40s and conjures that era's aura of fine cigars, sateen gowns, and gentlemanly romance. The opening title track summons images of Bogie and Ingrid, and is one of the finest moments in the collection. The swanky versions of Nina Simone's signature "Love Me or Leave Me" and "I'm in the Mood for Love" (which has a faint Martin Denny overtone) are perfectly suited to Ferry's low-key vocals (he's no real crooner, let's face it). His talented band swings with fervor, especially on the upbeat tunes "The Way You Look Tonight," "Lover Come Back to Me," and "Just One of Those Things." There are a number of intimate, romantic moments, but the highlight is Ferry's take on "Falling in Love Again," first made famous way back when with devastating sadness by Marlene Dietrich. Ferry's version is almost as moving. --Lorry Fleming

Five Stars Worth of Old Fashioned Romance, Bryan Ferry Style.......2007-04-20
I bought this album for three reasons:
1. These old classic songs are great. After hearing them many times for many years I never tire of them
and I always find them romantic and moving; and as with a previous reviewer, they transport me to
another time and place.
2. The band on this CD is absolutely first-rate and the musical arrangements are perfectly matched to the
time period and lyrics of each song.
3. I love Bryan Ferry's unique, not-to-be-mistaken-for-anyone-else's voice. It really goes great with this
music.
As a bonus, Amazon.com's low price for this album was way below what I expected to pay.
The True Jazz Romantic That Is Ferry..These Foolish Things.........2007-01-11
Bryan Ferry to me always symbolized the lone romantic, the crooner who wished he was living in the 20's and 30's in the days of early Jazz.. and I say this as a die hard Roxy fan since their 1st LP came out.Ferry's obsession as a time traveller was always something that drew me to Roxy which were truly in an unclassifiable class all of their own as giants of their day whose music will always hold up even in a hundred years from now.
Fusing the right sonic contemporary details to his solo studio recordings adding a continental feel and ambiance to his amazing output of covers and styles Ferry deals with throughout his solo career all smack of "great" taste and added elegance, no doubt I would say that all future rock historians would add this in describing his music which was always Royal and lush.
Roxy's then use of sax and oboe were pretty amazing stuff adding tremendously to their sonic impact and Ferry is able to add interesting twists even when redoing his homage to his choice of covers.
On this CD covering the likes of Cole Porter,Rodgers@Hart,using jazz and violin, cello arrangements, all convey a limited appeal to the usual rock fan but for those who also listen to Satchmo and Holiday, will all understand the nod to bygone eras and it's greatness.
A surprisingly weak album from a great vocalist.......2006-09-07
Make no mistake; I love Bryan Ferry. I got this album after hearing "Falling in Love Again" (which granted is one of the rare winners on this crooner's CD) at a restaurant. The rest of the CD is so-so, and Ferry's voice wavers surprisingly over some of the note arrangements. Instead of the robust voice that melts thorugh songs like "Limbo" and "More than This," his performance is oddly tinny. Stick to his Roxy Music catalog.
Great record.......2006-06-30
I've just read every single review that appears before mine, and I'm amazed to see so many comparisons of Mr. Ferry's renditions to "the originals". WHAT originals? Most of these songs were written for Broadway, and all of them were written before the first ever cast album, "Oklahoma!", was released.
The term "cover", by the way, doesn't mean what a lot of people seem to think it means. Once singer X pays a songwriter a chunk of money for a song and records it, singer Y can then record the song virtually for free (not counting royalties, of course) and release his recording concurrently so as to cut into singer X's sales. Such a recording, and only such a recording, is properly called a cover. A recording of the song made after singer X's recording has had its run is not a cover. Chubby Checker's rendition of "The Twist" is an example of a cover because it was released very shortly after Hank Ballard's rendition, and with a big push from Dick Clark (who'd masterminded the operation) it quickly swamped Ballard's. "The Twist" became a hit again in 1989, but the 1989 version was not a cover because it did not cut substantially into the sales of Hank Ballard's record, which had eclipsed decades before (nor did it cut into Chubby Checker's, for that matter).
Excellent.......2006-06-13
Note please that this is NOT a "cover" album; you cannot possibly "cover" a standard, thank you very much.
Ad rem: One way to appreciate the quality of this record is to compare it to the Rod Stewart release of the same title. Whereas the Stewart recording ranges seemingly randomly over the years, this one focuses much more coherently on a single decade. It is stylistically consistent, with just a few fairly subtle anachronisms, delicately chosen. A great deal of care, including authorative historical research, obviously went into the arrangements (the ondes martinot on several songs is an inspired touch), but they are nevertheless always lively and never stiff. Stewart's arrangements, in contradistinction, are schmaltzy, gooey, and otherwise haphazard. (He even resorts to "synth strings" on several songs.)
It's true that Ferry is not in posssession of a powerful singing voice, but, in my opinion, the panache, wit, and intelligence in his delivery more than make up for any vocal deficiencies.

Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age is the sequel to Itzhak Perlman's popular album of movie themes performed with soundtrack composer John Williams. Unlike its predecessor, this disc focuses on classic cinema themes and features the Boston Pops Orchestra, not the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Laura theme, as well as Max Steiner's Now Voyager and Miklós Rózsa's Lost Weekend themes, sound lush and romantic in Perlman's lyrical hands. The traditional Irish jig "The Quiet Man" is the disc's most upbeat moment, while the unforgettable Gone with the Wind theme is its most memorable. These are timeless, dreamy compositions, though not necessarily the most uplifting. If you're looking for something cinematic to get your heart racing, check out Ricardo Chailly's recording of Shostakovich's film scores or even Leopold Stokowski's classic work on Fantasia. --Jason Verlinde

I cannot review the product which I know is great , as I was billed for it, but never received it.
Perlman, Williams reunite in wonderful Serenade sequel.......2003-12-04
With the success of Cinema Serenade, conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman reunited to record another collection of classic movie themes. Performed this time by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the music of Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age harkens back to the days of stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ray Milland and Clark Gable.
The 12 selections include themes by Hollywood legends Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (whose son George would later produce several of composer/conductor Williams' scores for Varese Sarabande Records). Cinema Serenade 2 presents beautiful arrangements of Steiner's themes for Now, Voyager and Gone With The Wind, Korngold's love theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie Chaplin's lovely Modern Times and "St Patrick's Day," a traditional Irish song from the John Wayne classic The Quiet Man.
Since I consider myself to be a charter member of The Rick Blaine Society of Rank Sentimentalists, I'd have to say my favorite tracks on this album are Herman Hupfeld's timeless "As Time Goes By" from 1942's Casablanca and Victor Young's "My Foolish Heart" (from the 1949 film of the same title). It was while I was listening to the radio (on the late WTMI 93.1 FM classical station) that the DJ played "As Time Goes By" and I discovered this recording of mostly lyrical themes; I listened to Perlman's haunting violin solos and the Boston Pops' bravura performance and nearly wept. I, of course, bought this CD the next day and it's now one of my favorites.
For fans of Itzhak Perlman, John Williams or film music in general, both of the Cinema Serenade CDs are a treasure trove of beautiful and memory-stirring themes.
Some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear.......2001-06-15
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever heard. The selections are musically much richer than Cinema Serenade I. In particular, Sir William Walton's music from Henry V, Korngold's music from Robin Hood, and Newman's music from Wuthering Heights are standouts. The Korngold is my favorite, with several themes from the picture packed into a short love scene lifted straight from the movie. The arrangements on this album are stunningly lush, especially those by Williams. His opening chords from The Uninvited are terrific harmonically.
Don't compare it to Cinema Serenade 1.......2000-01-24
Itzhak Perlman is still considered by me the best violinist alive today. His techiniques are so impressable and heartouching and nobody can contest that. The idea of this CD was wonderful, although the selections of the musics aren't so good than in Cinema Serenade 1. But anyway, if you want to listen musics that worldwide the people emotioned with, buy this CD, but don't fall in the temptation to compare it to the first one.
I can't stop listening to this CD...........1999-10-03
All of those lush movie themes are greatly compiled on this CD. I especially liked Laura and Stella by Starlight. After listening to this, you will want to go out and buy/rent these great old movies!

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

A complicated thought ........2007-06-15
The album released in 2004.
Producing is Richard. Richard gaze anywhere ,Karen is in a doze. The heterogeneous impression was received compared with the jacket filled on love of CD before.
Although the whole album is not bad, it feels change from previous Carpenters.
It is also anyway lonely to be regrettable that Karen stops being now.
OK but dispensable.......2007-04-03
Lots of the songs (taken from TV shows) were also recorded in studio and I must say that I prefer the studio versions. The other songs are light-weight and do not make a great addition to the Carpenters' discography.
Finally, I really don't see why the "Close Encounters/Star Wars" medley needs to feature on this CD.
A great compilation with some must-have extras.......2007-01-13
You have to love the Carpenters to own this. I think it's the ultimate proof of a fan. Not that's it's not any good but it's certainly not what you'd expect.
A big and pleasant surprise is "California Dreamin'". It's Karen like I had never heard her before. Richard, her brother, says: "Karen, at 17, is a marvel." And he's not being biased. She is truly a revelation. It starts slow and ends with a bang. You can't help but dance to it, just like with "Dancing in the Street."
What made me go for this album was seeing the "Karen/Ella Medley" and the "Carpenters/Como Medley" tracks. I just had to hear that. The only problem is that it's a medley. I would've liked the complete songs. But listening to Karen sing a piece of "As Time Goes By" was worth it.
I personally object to Richard Carpenter singing but I guess he just couldn't help himself. He was a genius producer and musci arranger but his voice is a big no-no, especially considering who his sister was. I can't believe he meddled with Karen and Perry Como on this medley but I guess he had his reasons. Either way, this piece has its moments and it was basically brilliant to get Como and Karen and Ella and Karen together.
There's also another medley on track #2 that includes two known favorites: Superstar and Rainy Days and Mondays. I didn't realize it was live until I read the CD booklet. Karen is THAT good, yes.
If you're a Carpentersphile, this is a no-brainer.
Hooray for the Carpenters!.......2006-03-26
I had forgotten how much I always enjoyed the Carpenters. Especially their Christmas albums. Not to lessen the praise to Karen, but I am getting so tired of the mud that is thrown at Richard. I can't understand why. His tone and virtuosity on the pino is enough to rival the likes of Liberace! His arrangements of the pieces he performs are simply exhilarating!
AS TIME GOES BY- DIFFERENT- BUT IN A GOOD WAY!.......2006-01-03
At first this album surprised me. I hadn't anticipated so many songs from tv specials. But I soon found most of the songs nothing less than charming, and a few really epitomize the "Carpenters Sound". The cd features a whopping 15 tracks, including a few unheard ones before As Time Goes By was released. NOWHERE MAN, sung by Karen at just 17 years old is fantastic, with wisdom and pain in her voice far beyond her years. Their version of DANCING IN THE STREET, gave me quite a kick. DIZZY FINGERS, I found to be pleasant, until I saw Richard perform it on the CLOSE TO YOU documentary. He literally runs from one piano to another while performing it! Its more than pleasant its a song that's entertaining, especially with the visuals! YOU'RE JUST IN LOVE spotlights Karen's husky voice beautifully, and towards the end when she and Richard are harmonizing, its not only good, but rather touching. Of course the several medleys are quite charming and classy. In the medley with Perry Como, he sings some of their hits, and they sing some of his. HITS MEDLEY'76 is delightful, especially the Goodbye to Love part. It is heart rendering, ironic, touching, and as impressive as the original version in 1972 (which got a lot of heat for its guitar solo). A different sounding collection of songs, but any TRUE fan'd pay to hear Karen and Richard read the phone book and slap a thigh for a beat. Get this cd, listen to it a couple of times, and surely you'll find it as worthy as A Kind of Hush, Close to You, Voice of the Heart, and Carpenters, tan album, etc.

WWII songs.......2007-06-11
I'm too young to remember the songs. However, while I was growing up I was allowed to see the movies from that era. I loved the simplicity of the melodies and lyrics. It's a weird flash back to my childhood.
For Those That remember Real Music.......2007-05-24
As someone who thinks that modern day music isn't, these CD's are great. Good reproduction of sound that is pure and real. The 65 songs are a fine value at the price. This collection will please anyone that remembers the music of WWII and will also be enjoyed by those that want to hear the great old songs sung by the artists that made them famous. You will not go wrong with this collection!
this is a great collection of music for all you 40's music lovers!.......2006-02-27
I just bought this collection recently, and I must tell you, it is really good! The music tracks are really clear and you can just imagine this era as the songs play! I shared these cd's with my mom one afternoon and she had quite a time reminiscing over this music! This is a lot of good nostalgic music for all of you that enjoy world war 2 music. (this is a 3-cd set for a great price!)

Pre-MP3 days.......2007-05-06
In the pre-MP3 days, there was the game of choosing the one album you would want if stranded on a deserted island. This would be VERY high on my list.
shock announcement -- little feat not "southern rock" .......2007-02-10
The editorial review calls Little Feat a "Southern rock" band. Let's see... Lowell George's father was a furrier from Hollywood, CA and Lowell was an LA kid who grew up around actors and artists, not rednecks. Before Little Feat, Lowell played in a California garage psychedelic band and then with Frank Zappa. Zappa's musical eclecticism and the surreal psychedelic blues of Zappa's friend Captain Beefheart are important influences on Lowell's music. Then we have Roy Estrada, a former Mother of Invention, Little Feat's original bass player. So out of the original 4 members of Little Feat, two are LA musicians & former Frank Zappa band members. How's that "Southern rock"? Bill Payne was from Texas, but the band was based in LA, and the feel is very experimental, psychedelic and sophisticated.
The "Southern rock" label is applied by superficial listeners because of Little Feat's funky rhythmic feel and the fact that Lowell played slide guitar. But Lowell's playing, while influenced by Delta blues, is much more musically advanced than most Southern rock, it is jazzy, subtle and experimental. If Duane Allman was influenced by Coltrane's extended linear solos, Lowell was more of a Thelonious Monk, exploring fractured rhythms and dreamlike, otherworldly harmonic textures. listen to Sailing Shoes or Trouble. These songs stop and start, then collapse and flow like melting honey. Lowell's slide playing was all about ornamental texture and atmosphere, he mostly played behind and around his vocal lines creating rich sound shadings to emphasize and enhance the emotional expression of the lyrics with tone colors. Check the slide on "Got No Shadow" -- for would-be slide players like myself, this is a master-class in how to extract a molecular explosion of tone from a few sustained notes. Lowell's lyrics, are closer to people like Dylan than Skynyrd. "Lady in a turban and a Cocaine Tree," "The footprints on your ceiling they're almost gone".
OK, I'm done, case closed. Listen to Lowell, he's the doctor.
Good album.......2007-01-22
I was completely satisfied with this album. It had many of my favorites, and unlike most CDs, it was fairly long.
great selection, terrible sound.......2007-01-03
All my favorite songs, but they sound like they were bootlegged off my old roommate's tape player. Muffled and flat, no matter how loud you crank it up. Very disappointing.
The Feat That didn't Fail Me.......2004-10-20
Many good musical things happened in the early 70s, apart from Dylan's return to form with 'Blood On the Tracks'. And one of them was Lowell George's,'Little Feat'. They were sensational in Melbourne, a night I have fond, exhilerating memories of.'Dixie Chicken' was already out there, and the evening involved much of its core content, to the delight of the crowd. Now people aplenty will tell you that The Feat's continuance after George's tragic death, has been solid if not excellent. Not for me. The edge he brought to their music was really what took me places.'As Time Goes By', gives a good dose of George at the peak of his powers; plenty of his songs, sizzling guitar work and that wonderful, wonderful voice. On my ideal 'Best Of' would be the entirety of Dixie, plus the tracks here, which are the ones I would have chosen from the remaining early discs. There's George's preferred version of 'Willin'.(I first heard the song on a minor masterpiece,'Kindling', by Gene Parsons, and was surprised to note its absence on Parson's re-release). But why no,'Roll'um Easy'? (Another aside; George's version is great, but it receives majestic treatment on Glen Campbell's,'Reunion'disc). But this is so close to my best of.
