With its unique sound and ebullient swing, the Glenn Miller Orchestra rapidly became the most popular band of its day. That sheer popularity is celebrated here in the remarkable string of No. 1 hits that the band recorded for RCA Victor from 1939 until 1942, when Miller decided to break up the band and enter the armed forces. Emphasizing sweet over swing, Miller created a unique, liquid reed sound by voicing a clarinet over the saxophones, often contrasting that effect with muted brass. Even a powerhouse swing tune like Erskine Hawkins's "Tuxedo Junction" took on softer hues in the Miller treatment, while the Modernaires vocal group added another trademark sound to such infectious songs as "Chattanooga Choo Choo." Miller's keen sense of public taste is apparent, from novelty tunes to superior ballads to his signature, "In the Mood." For anyone seeking a single-CD introduction to the Miller band, this collection has excellent sound and offers a window on the era. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Decent sound, some hits missing.......2005-07-23
This is a great CD, don't get me wrong, but if you are looking for the *one* disc that best covers Glenn Miller's famous charts and signature sound, you might want to keep looking. At 23 tracks, it definitely delivers on quantity but the quality of the sound is only mediocre. Not a lot has been done to "clean up" the original masters (which actually might be a positive to many purists) and the sound is a bit distant and bright. There are also some notable exceptions, particularly "Moonlight Serenade," "Pensylvania 6-5000" and "Little Brown Jug." Of course, the movie soundtrack covers those tunes and is in stereo, though the sound is not as authentic as these recordings.
Compromised Sound, Good Collection.......2003-06-11
This is a good collection of Miller's music, but the sound is compromised. I own actual 78's of this material, and the cd sounds harsh and compressed compared to to originals. Old 78's have a better frequency range than most people realize, and Miller's music needs to be remastered with newer restoration tools in order to best preserve the sound.

Glenn Miller - Chattanooga Choo-Choo.......2001-08-09
Just received this Cd in themail I am so thrilled with it. These songs were taped in 1939 and around that time - the original ones. Anyone who listened to Gleen Miller during the World War 2 - must have this C.D.
Great songs and memories.......2001-01-15
The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most successful, and most well know of all the 'Big Bands'. 23 #1 hits spanning the period of May 1939 to February 1943, is an amazing accomplishment. I wasn't born when these songs came out, but growing up, I heard them played at my grandparents house a lot, and they bring back memories to me of those times. As a child I loved these songs and used to sing along with the vocals. It was also a thrill when my grandparents used to tell me stories of those times, of memories associated with these songs. My grandma, during WW2, hearing some of these songs in the background, while sitting in a bomb shelter in the midst of falling bombs, my grandads memories of being in the Royal Marines, and hearing these songs over the radio. I became spellbound, and to hear these songs now sometimes bring a lump to my throat for the memories they stir. This is truly a remarkable album, and all songs have been digitally remastered, so they sound wonderful.

Album Description
Ten years ago, I was singing regularly in a club in Madrid, accompanied only by the impressive sounds of maestro Rafael Ibarbia at the piano. One night after a show, I was approached by a gentleman who asked me if I would be interested in singing with a Big Band. I immediately said yes, went home, called my mother and asked, "How do you sing with a Big Band?". She replied that while she had often sung with large orchestras, she had never sung with a Big Band. Nevertheless, she encouraged me, told me I would be terrific and advised me to sing with my heart and have fun. Ten years later, i am still following her advice -- as is she! Last year, she came to one of our gigs and joined The Chattanooga Big Band in a few songs. She thought it was such fun (and received such a thunderous applause!) that she came up with the idea of doing a CD with the Big Band.
Of course it would have remained a dream if not for the vision and hard work of Patxi Urchegui. He did everything at the speed of light and with a smile on his face. Motivated by admiration for my Mother and friendship for us both, he made the whole thing come together. And what a trumpet player! Under his leadership, we recorded the entire CD in four days! My poor Mother arrived in Madrid, went to sleep, woke up the next day and went to the studio for a twelve-hour, non-stop session, in which we recorded nine songs. I marveled at how professional she was; even at four o'clock in the morning!
For the musicians, it was a real treat to work with someone as wonderful as my mother. She left them all agog with her rich tones, warmth and natural talent. For me, it was a dream come true. My mother, sister and I have always sung together, but we rarely have had the opportunity to record those moments. The only thing missing on this CD is the beautiful voice of my sister, Lydia. Maybe one day...
This CD brings together so many things that are important to me: My mother, who is so far away from me; the Chattanooga Big Band, my home away from home; and the music, which everyone responds to, regardless of culture or language. This is our gift to those we love.
Customer Reviews:
A Fantastic Collection.......2007-03-22
What a fantastic combination -- the incomparable Betty Johnson guesting with the Big Band with whom her daughter was a featured vocalist for some time. In hearing Ms. Johnson's other albums still available on Amazon, we were longing for more up-to-date fidelity. It's here and we THOROUGHLY enjoyed it, playing it over and over.
