Dionne Warwick Sings the Bacharach & David Songbook.......2006-08-25
This 3 CD Set is wonderful. With old songs and Duet with today singers really make this Set worth having. Just kick back and enjoy. What's not to like with Dionne Warwick and the songs of Bacharach & David?
This would make a great gift for those who enjoy good music and wonderful written songs.
Happiness!.......2006-08-19
This cd will make you laugh every time you play it! It's like an endless stream of prozac... you'll be wondering how on earth does a musical gem like this exist! I mean this as a compliment! If you want to take a trip out of this world, play this cd!!!
Dionne in the sixties.......2005-04-13
In the sixties, Dionne Warwick was much more successful in her native America than she was in Britain, but this was mainly because so many of her American hits were covered by British artists and became hits for them instead. As time progressed, this practice died out and Dionne gained the recognition she deserved in Britain too. This compilation focuses on her sixties music, specifically the songs that Bacharach and David wrote.
Bacharach and David were prolific songwriters in the sixties and Dionne relied heavily on their songs at that time. Do you know the way to San Jose and Walk on by were the only songs here to provide Dionne with significant British hits. Many of the other songs provided Dionne with American hits, but even in America, some songs were given to others to have hits with.
Among the songs here that were hits for other singers in Britain, America or both are Anyone who had a heart (Cilla Black), Raindrops keep falling on my head (B J Thomas). I just don't know what to do with myself (Dusty Springfield), Always something there to remind me (Sandie Shaw), I'll never fall in love again (Bobbie Gentry), I say a little prayer (Aretha Franklin), Make it easy on yourself (Walker brothers), What the world needs now is love (Jackie De Shannon), Alfie (Cilla Black), You'll never get to heaven (Stylistics), The look of love (Dusty Springfield) and Only love can break a heart (Gene Pitney). Indeed, there are very few songs on this CD that will be unfamiliar to fans of sixties music.
Notable omissions are Close to you (later made famous by the Carpenters), Don't make me over, and This girl's in love with you, all of which qualified for inclusion here. Still, the quality of the songs here is excellent and, for the price, this is wonderful value.
If you are looking for a collection of Dionne's sixties music, you'll find it difficult to improve on this one.
Poor audio quality ruins great music.......2004-02-29
I LOVE Dionne Warwick. Imagine my disappointment when I played this CD and from the opening track heard hiss and noise. Then on track two, "What the World Needs Now," there's so much distortion it makes the gorgeous song essentially unlistenable. And so on through the album. I'm going to recycle the disc through a used CD store, and get a different collection with better sound. Sorry, I don't yet know which one might be the best -- but it isn't this one.

Recorded in 1990, the same year various pop stars came out in recognition of Cole Porter and AIDS awareness with Red, Hot + Blue, Dionne Warwick's Porter album collects 13 favorites. It's hard to go wrong with this singer or this songwriter, but the production is pretty middle of the road, neither strikingly good nor shockingly bad. She's backed by a large orchestra, except in the reprise of "Night and Day," in which Stanley Jordan and the late Grover Washington Jr. add a smooth-jazz groove. No, Dionne's not exactly Ella here, but then she's not trying to be. --David Horiuchi

This CD is still in print!.......2007-06-25
BMG/Sony still has prints of this bright Warwick session produced by the late Arif Mardin. Warwick fans in England and Japan bought it. I mostly liked "Begin The Beguine" and "Night and Day" when I first heard this CD back in 1990. A great concept album that should have done better in the States if given a solid promotional push.
This is The Bottom, not The Top!.......2007-01-03
I simply cannot understand why all this album was recorded with sample keyboards, making sound of false violins. Pure disaster.
Certainly the most disappointing album by Ms. Warwick. Not even the great Cole Porter save the disc. One may say she is great as always, I cannot disagree.
Maybe the budget was small and so the producers gave birth to this completely neglectable album.
Nothing groundbreaking, but enchanting nonetheless.......2006-08-12
This album was recorded in 1990, by which time all the years of smoking had clearly taken their toll on Dionne's once enviable vocal range. The musical arrangements here are pretty generic as others have mentioned, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as songs this good basically carry themselves with at least decent instrumentation (and there is plenty of orchestration on this record, even if it is a bit uninspired). Dionne's voice does sound a bit worn and tired throughout, but at the same time retains a rich quality and sophistication that make this album a very pleasant listen from start to finish.
A real good Abulm.......2005-03-08
This is a real good cd, I would like to see it become aviable again.
Pleasant but what a disappointment!.......2004-12-27
When this was originally released I couldn't get my copy soon enough, not especially because of Dionne but because of the style of music. I have enjoyed Warwick's music in the past and think that it would've been lovely to have had her release a definitive anthology of Bacharach/David songs, at which she excelled. Here, she isn't ill-served by Porter's writing, for the most part, but the arrangements aren't so much awful as they are completely and unforgivingly generic; there isn't a single track that stands out in my memory for they all sound exactly alike: same tempo, same style, and even Dionne herself falls into the trap of sameness, giving each lyric the identical performance, though to her credit she does seem to be enjoying herself quite a bit. Every once in a while I'll play this album, just to see if my feelings have changed, and in the nearly-15 years since this was released, they haven't. Not at all. That said, for her big fans or those interested in this style of music but who aren't entirely discriminating, go for it - you'll probably enjoy it. For the serious fan of standards, however, I'd say buy it on the cheap. Definitely in that "nice, but no cigar" category.

The legendary diva's return to recording after a four-year break is an opportunity for young music buyers to rediscover some of Warwick's classic hits in totally different musical settings and for faithful fans to enjoy the warmth of Warwick's vocals on some strong new material. While Burt Bacharach and Hal David songs like "Walk On By" and "I Say a Little Prayer" don't have the punch of the original '60s versions, Warwick's zesty take on "Always Something There to Remind Me" is worth the price of the whole album. With South African singer-guitarist Jonathan Butler as a guest, the much-recorded tune becomes a festive celebration. Equally upbeat is a salsa version of "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" complete with Latin-music giants Celia Cruz and Pete Escovedo. An R&B-slanted take on "Reach Out for Me," another of Warwick's '60s classics, features the Emotions and El DeBarge. Warwick aficionados will love glorious new ballads like "High upon This Love" and "Love Begins with You." A diverse album that marks a delightful return for the pop and soul songstress. --David Nathan
Customer Reviews:
Unbelievably BAD.......2007-02-12
There has never EVER been a song remake superior to its original Top 40 hit. This axiom applies to the rehashed DIONNE SINGS DIONNE album. Where once Warwick's lightly delicate voice easily scaled the musical heights Burt Bacharach set for her, she now labors in a husky wheeze to just reach the notes. Her musical range has dropped at least half an octave or more, and she's become shaky. It's sad to hear a formerly great voice go to seed.
Stick to Dionne's mid Sixties SCEPTER recordings. You cannot go wrong with the originals.
(Thanks to M. Messina for help with this review)
Dionne is workin' it!!!!!!!.......2007-01-26
I took a chance and bought this CD without hearing any songs. What a "fantabulous" recording. The vocals, instrumentation and even the sequence of the songs is super!!!!! Dionne and her guest artist are cookin'. She has taken some of her old songs and given them a fresh sound and included new material that is absolutely marvelous. I love every "cut" on the CD. In fact, I was disappointed when the last one ended. It's hard to pick a favorite, but "Always Something There To Remind Me" (with Jonathan Butler), "What The World Needs Now", and "Do You Know The Way To San Jose"?, are the front runners. However, "Humbly I Pray" is an awesome inspirational and encouraging song.
Kudos to Dionne, her producers, composers, arrangers, musicians and guest vocalists. This project is worth every penny!!!!!!
I'm impressed!.......2006-08-25
I don't know what I was thinking, keeping this CD in my amazon shopping cart, for a long long time. It was only there for one track I could not find and download from the internet "High upon this Love". Looking back at it, I'm so thankful that I couldn't find it, to be forced to buy the whole CD. And boy, what a CD! Fourteen beautiful tracks. For those who cliam to have a good taste in music, and still didn't have it, I'd say go and get it.
IF YOU ARE A FAN OF THE LATE CELIA CRUZ YOU GOT TO HAVE THIS.......2003-09-11
Having never owned a Dionne Warwick album and only listened to a few of her hits I discovered this album while cruising my Big Lots store. Hours later I popped the album into my cd player and boy was i shocked at how much Dionne has changed and her style is very unique unlike many artists. Here's my review of Dionne Sings Dionne,
1. Walk On By,
This version sounds exactly to a T like Melissa Manchester's version that she recorded on her 1989 album Tribute but in my mind love the 90's version of it and Dionne does an nice job,
2. Love Begins With You,
Wonderful new ballad that Dionne wrote herself that is very very nicely sung,
3. Reach Out For Me ,
Featuring El Debarge De Barge and The Emotions. Dionne's version of this song is nicely written and has good lyrics but the one thing that bothers me is that this version sounds too darn much like El Debarge's 80's hit The Rhythm of The Night but who can argue,
4. High Upon This Love,
This fantastic ballad also serves as the love theme from CBS's The Bold and The Beautiful and who better than Dionne to sing a soap opera love theme. Even though i'm not a Soap Opera fanatic this song appeals to me much,
5. I say a little Prayer,
Dionne turns this Hal David classic into r&b flavor by giving it her all another hit from her that you will actually hear the real Dionne,
6. Always something there to remind me,
A duet with African jazz artist Jonathan Butler. Dionne takes on this classic and complete with a Keb'Mo like sound and Jonathan's African lilt makes this song click. Little did I know that this song was an 80's hit made me surprised.,
7. If I Want To,
A song about not giving up and having your faith in you when can't try. Dionne sings with passion in every word and that is why it's one of my favorite songs,
8. Aquarela Do Brazil,
Sung In Portuguese and English Dionne performs this Brazillian Anthem with soothing vocals and unique beats. I myself do not know Portuguese but I still like this track,
9. I promise you,
This new ballad written exclusively for the cd is so nicely done by Dionne and she and the DWB are so talented,
10. Be my neighbor,
This wonderful ballad marks the Debut of singer Tyrese and he and Dionne make a good pair singing together,
11. All Kinds of people,
Dionne sings this song with goodness about caring about other people. However the only thing about this song is the Reach Out bridge at the end gives me a headache,
12. What the world needs now,
WEAK WEAK WEAK Dionne does an horrible version of this song with a ton of rappers and to me they are the stars of this version not Dionne. This track I skip and am not pleased with,
13. Do You know the way to San Jose,
Featuring the late Celia Cruz Dionne turns this classic into a fun salsa beat. I don't know why I love this song so much but it ranks as my favorite Dionne song And Celia's vocals are a laugh. The main reason to buy this album. AZUCAR,
14. Humbly I Pray,
Power gospel a first gospel hit for Dionne,
Dionne followed this with Dionne Sings Dionne II that is released only in Japanese Markets and Asian countries. It's really a shame that Dionne hasn't had a new cd since. But until listen with your heart
Who better than Dionne to sing Dionne?.......2003-01-24
Thank God for Amazon.com for selling this welcome addition to my collection and thanks to David Nathan, author of "Soulful Divas" for telling me about it.
To the disc at hand, Miss Warwick has gloriously revisited her past and majestically put a contemporary spin on her timeless works. Even with the addition of a roster of supremely talented guest performers, the talented Dionne has never sounded stronger.
"Reach Out for Me", "I Say A Little Prayer for You", "Always Something to Remind Me", "Be My Neighbor", "What the World Needs Now is Love" and "Humbly I Pray" are as good as music can get.
And the idea of really adding a Latin flair to "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" is inspired genius.
Hats off the both Dionne the singer and executive producer of this TEN-STAR album.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent new renditions of her earlier hits.......2006-09-18
Dionne Warwick was not fond of this release, which is why it was only released in Japan, where she is still respected. However, her new solo renditions of her hits show that, even though her range of 40 years ago is diminished and her angelic head voice is gone, she can still deliver with the voice of experience.
Particularly surprising in this set is the new, extended version of "In Between the Heartaches" and the updated version of "Don't Make Me Over," which is now a hot, uptempo R&B track. Thirty-six years after recording "Anyone Who Had a Heart," Warwick's voice shows the listener that she very well knows the feeling of helplessness and desperation that should go into the interpretation of this song. Gone were the days when she had to simply sing the notes and add some feeling; this time around, the feeling is injected automatically into her renditions.
Warwick also re-recorded "The Look of Love" and "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)," the latter of which is a bit absurd and comical. I admit, I chuckled a few times as I listened to the experienced Queen singing about the wishes and marriage hopes of a naive and illusioned princess.
Also included in this set is a heartbreaking new interpretation of "Message to Michael." Unlike the original version, which leaves the listener feeling that the youthful protagonist still has a chance to gain happiness and find her missing man, the mix of emotions infused in her smoky, aged voice leaves the listener with the impression that she has already resigned herself to losing him forever (or worse... that she may not live to see him again).
Her voice may not be as pristine as it once was, and she may not be able to hold the money notes for as long as she used to, but I was definitely surprised and enlightened at the discovery of this collection. I give it 5 stars for effort (and because of the lack of guest artists, even though her background singers sometimes carry more of the song than I would like).
Better arrangements.......2006-02-14
Dionne sings Dionne II is much better than vol.1, the arrangements are better and it's Dionne by herself no duets, this cd is now a collector's item, I understand that Dionne wasn't happy with this release because the songs still sound like they are in there demo form, still Dionne sounds good and this a wonderful edition to her catalog!, I love 'In Between The Heartaches', and Dionne still delivers the emotional impact of 'Anyone Who Had A Heart', and Dionne does a nice slower version of 'What A Fool Believes', now that Dionne has re-visited her hits, I hope soon she'll release a cd of new material.
Dionne Sings Dionne II far surpasses the first........2003-05-07
This compilation of newly recorded gems by Ms. Warwick is a must have for die-hard fans and for new converts. The arrangements are beautiful and they allow Ms. Warwick's, now baritone, voice to still sound strong and full. "Then Came You" is especially catchy with Dionne doing all her own background work. Who needs those Spinners anyway! The best tracks are "In Between The Heartaches" and "The Look Of Love." Weakest: "What A Fool Believes." Sorry, Dionne, I've heard Michael McDonald sing it, and he's better.
Gem!!!!! Gem!!! Gem!!!!.......2001-08-07
Ms. Warwick is the orignal diva of all divas. This album is testimony that Dionne is still one of the most underrated singers of our time. The musical arrangements are just superb. Especially, In between the Heartaches, what a treasure. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this album over and over. Must have for all of Warwick loyal fans like myself who fell in love with her voice ever since I first listen to her music. Keep making beautiful music Ms. Warwick.
Dionne makes us over wonderfully well!.......2001-03-26
A few words,"Why isn't this released in the USA? I don't understand how this works or doesn't. Does Dionne not have a company in the USA? This album proves that Dionne can still sing at 60 yrs. old. This is a great album with some great remakes. I have the originals. They are great as well. I can't decide which I like better. My favorite cut on Dionne 2 is In Between the Heartaches. I had this on an old LP, the original and liked it then. I think Message to Michael is better than the original in some ways because of the instrumentation. Well, maybe not better but I'm partial to this one. Dionne has now done three different versions of Say a Little Prayer:The original, the one on Dionne Sings Dionne and now a new one. Again, I can't decide which one I like best of the three. I also liked the lady that sang it on My Best Friend's Wedding soundtrack but didn't like the fact she sings The momment me wake up. I guess she was trying to sound Jamaican or something. Anyway, like all the songs on here, Look of Love, but of course I like the original too. I guess I'm partial to Carpenters' Close to You but I do like this version very much. I have heard Dionne's original of this and this is definitely better. I think that I like the original version of You'll Never Get to Heaven. I'm not wild about the backup singers on this but it's still good singing by her. I think Dionne is the most underrated singer of our time. Why don't they ever do a behind the music on her on VH1 or do her on Biography? This is a wonderful album even though it costs more because it's an import. I think if it were released with a single it might have a hit for her and put her up there with Cher for some kind of musical record. Now, I wish she would remake Valley of the Dolls. She kind of remade Alfie on her live album, Hot Live and Otherwise. I love the old songs but also hope that Dionne does some new ones and that she keeps singing as long as she can. I guess she smokes and hope she will quit that. I met her doing a concert along with Burt Bacharach and it was one of the best concerts I'd ever been too. Buy this and you won't be dissappointed. One other song that is great is Don't Make Me Over. Glad she did make it over, it's great and the arrangement fits the changing times. Hope Dionne continues to sing forever. She is one of my favorites of all time. She has now been done on Biography. Now they need to put her on Behind the Music. I am still listening to this after I bought it a least a year ago. Why isn't it released here? It should be. I think there would be many hits from this album.

Disappointing.......2002-08-28
Over the years I've bought several Dionne Warwick albums that I've listened to with great enjoyment. I find this particular excursion, however, a sad disappointment. It just doesn't work. The instrumentals almost seem like parodies of Vegas back-up arrangements. Miss Warwick sounds as if she is out of her element. And the sound quality is mediocre. Ms. Warwick is a singer that I respect and admire. But this particular album does little to burnish her legacy.
great material for a great singer.......2001-07-16
I have to admit, that I am a big fan of Miss Warwick, and collect about any CD of hers that I can get my hands on... I like this collection for the theme of this collection, timeless songs by a timeless singer. I appreciated the materal from her Live in Paris album, which is not available on CD.

Customer Reviews:
This is not the definitive collection.......2003-01-05
I purchased this CD based on the reviews here, and mostly based on the names: Warwick, Bacharach, David. But after listening to the album, I very much doubt that any of the three would endorse it.
The "Import" label was suspicious, and the songs sound like imitations of the originals. There's no doubt that this is Dionne's voice, and Burt and Hal's lyrics and songs, but these are not the renditions that we've fallen in love with. Dionne's voice lacks the familiar soul and mastery of the originals (just where did they get those vocal tracks?), and the musical arrangements lack depth and texture and do not blend well with the vocals. There is distortion and poor balance between vocals and music in this production, making it disturbing to listen to.
This is an album I thought I would want to listen to over and over, but it lacks the musical magic we know of these songs and these artists. Warwick, Bacharach and David will always be five star by my estimation, but this production is a zero.
Very good collection.......2002-09-18
Dionne Warwick is a gifted singer, her long musical relationship with Burt Bacharach and Hal David produced a string of hits for her, all of them except "Don't Make Me Over" are included in this CD, and many are today timeless pop classics.
Their musical relationship had a gap in the 70's and early 80's. In this period Warwick recorded with some other producers or songwriters as Holland-Dozier-Holland, Jerry Ragovoy and notably the album "Heartbreaker" produced by Barry Gibb and others with songs written by The Bee Gees, which stamped her voice in the 80's and gave her a new profile that continues up to now. She joined again with Bacharach as a songwriter and producer, and also with Bararach and David for a new song in the 90's.
This CD also contains some cover versions of Bacharach-David songs which were hits for other artists as "I Just Don't Know What to Do with myself" (Dusty Springfield), "Trains and Boats and Planes" (Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas), "Raindrops Keep Falling in my Head" (B J Thomas) or "Only Love can Break a Heart" (Gene Pitney) to which Dionne Warwick give her personal approach. Very good collection, not 5 stars because the sound quality could be very much better.
Wonderful! You will listen to over and over again.......2002-09-05
I enjoyed this CD to the ultimate. Most of the favorite songs you hear on movies and wish you could have are compiled on this disk. I played it over and over again.
Five stars easily
Why the SAME old Songs on every historical reissure?.......2001-06-06
When OH! When will Ms Warwick and the Powers That Be release the COMPLETE discography of her Scepter recordings (63-73) and/or ALL of her Burt Bachrach? For many of us GI's in Viet-Nam, during the era of Acid Rock, Ms Warwick's artistry (Thanks to the Columbia record Club) was the soul of Sanity. Most of her Bachrach has NEVER been equalled, much less surpassed. I believe that she is the only 60's and 70's major artist, the great bulk of whose greatest work, is currently unavailble on CD, Any Takers?
Best Bacharach interpretation so far.......2000-07-05
Warwick's version of the Bacharach songs are the best. I think somehow because the then fresh musical arrangement and Warwick's unique voice have seldom been copied or imitated. Everybody else have done the songs the tired old way.
Moreover, in my mind, Warwick has not sung (nor chosen) any other song well.
It's a pity this CD does not include "Papier Mache" and "Theme from the Valley of the Dolls"
Just the same, 22 top songs aren't that bad.
