Looks can be deceiving.......2007-03-17
If you're of the opinion that Deep Purple functioned best as a jam band you may have already been drawn to this like a moth to an Insectocutor. Those who haven't - you have been warned, this is not a very good show.
First, the very trivial complaints - Gillan doesn't know the words to "Kentucky Woman" (now there's a surprise, not!) and makes no effort at improvising lyrics in "Speed King/Kneel And Pray" (at least the BBC version was sort of coherent).
Now what are the good points? "Hush" and "Wring That Neck" feature very charming Jon Lord solos, complete with amusing musical quotations and Emersonesque distortions. "Paint It Black" reminds us that Paice had the musicality to as well as the technique (he was better at constructing a solo than Bonham or Baker), and the band manage to get the theme statement note-perfect this time. "Mandrake Root" has Gillan singing what he can remember of the original second verse, and when the jam begins, it's the only time Ritchie's excuse for a solo fits in musically. Which brings us to...
Bad points - RITCHIE. On a good night he was the best British hard-rock lead guitarist of his generation, exhibiting a harmonic sophistication way beyond Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi. But this isn't a good night - it's one where he seems to be waiting in vain for a good idea. And to cover himself, he wibbles (i.e trills aimlessly) and sploshes (i.e plays distorted, atonal glissandos that don't have a context) - and that's all he EVER does!
Which is why, not only does this album not come within hailing distance of the magnificent STOCKHOLM 1970/SCANDINAVIAN NIGHTS, it's even inferior to the 1970 BBC In Concert performance.
A bit soon for a re-issue?.......2007-03-13
What was wrong with Kneel & Pray? Same CD, same songs, same order. Different cover. Why?
Deep Purple - 'Live In Montreux,1969' (Purple Records).......2007-01-06
Superb 2-CD unreleased archive title from the band, itself.Concert took place on October 4, 1969 at the Lido in Montreux, Switzerland. Features an early gig by Deep Purple's 'Mark 2' line-up, which of course if the classic personnel of Blackmore, Paice, Gillan, Glover and Lord. All seven(7) of these cuts TOTALLY kick *ss!! I was in awe when I heard the intensity and energy during the live performances of "Speed King", "Hush", "Child In Time", their thirteen minute Stones cover version of "Paint It Black" and Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman". Top of the line sound quality. Highly recommended.
amazing 1969 recording of Deep Purple at Montreux.......2006-11-13
This is truly an amazing find, as well as recording for the Deep Purple fan. It's the "classic" MK2 lineup just a few months along, being caught on tape (pretty good quality) doing a complete mind blowing set in late '69. The songs performed are Kneel & Pray (early version of Speed King), Hush, Child in Time, Wring That Neck, Paint It Black, Mandrake Root and Kentucky Woman as the encore, very rare indeed. Thus, making Montreux '69 an essential purchase for the Deep Purple fan!

This 78-minute collection from four appearances at the famed Swiss blues festival displays the varied strengths of Luther Allison's music. The tensile, screaming guitar work and squawling vocal attack Allison is known for are here, of course, but there's another layer at work. A 1984 set with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, for instance, offers the Muddy Waters-like "Back Down South" (on which Allison lays down his ax in favor of a harp), as well as the Otis Redding-style shouts of "Memories." The most intense moments come on "Bad News Is Coming" and "Bad Love" (with the Memphis Horns backing him up), when Allison pushes through to the pulse of his muse with a six-string expression of confusion and grit. They make his death in the late '90s poignant and that much more palpable. --Rickey Wright

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "CHICAGO NATIVE FLEES TO SWITZERLAND WITH THE BLUES!".......2007-01-23
Due to the fact that Chicago blues great, Luther Allison, had to flee Chicago to earn a living playing da blues, (See earlier Shaq Review!) the famed Montreux Jazz festival became his stage. Included on this CD are nothing but "live" performances from this venue covering the years 1976-1994. Every cut is great, so you can't miss with this selection, but let me point out a few extra ordinary highlights! I have heard many performances of "Little Red Rooster", and this performance by Luther is the absolute best. It is 11 minutes and 30 seconds long, and every second, is a gift. No one has ever performed "The Sky Is Crying" live, better than Stevie Ray Vaughn, and in Shaq's opinion, Albert King is second. But, this performance by Luther, highlighted with a slide guitar, is a different approach, and interestingly, enjoyable. And how "bitter sweet", must it have been, for Luther, under self-exile, in Europe, to earn a decent living, singing, "Sweet Home Chicago!" This CD is a must, for any true electric blues enthusiast!
Red Hot Live Chicago Blues from Switzerland.......2006-08-06
Fans of the blues have always been blessed to have the Montreux Jazz Festival since it has produced a huge number of classic performances with just about every great blues artist. When comparing Luther to his fellow Chicago bluesmen, his sound is more similar to Buddy Guy than Muddy Waters due to his raw, energetic, & frenzied guitar solos. Just about everybody has recorded Willie Dixon's 'Gambler's Blues,' but Luther's version recorded at Montreux back in '76 absolutely smokes. His extended version of 'Little Red Rooster' heats things up with the same intensity. 'Bad News is Coming' recorded in '84 & 'Bad Love' recorded in '94 are two other fiery tracks. I also highly recommend Luther's 'Live in Chicago' CD (recorded in '97). Between the two live CD's, they encompass the majority of Luther's best work.
Luther at his best live.......2006-03-20
Luther Allison was one of those artists that seemed to play better live than in the studio. This CD is compiled with performances over almost 20 years. Even though some of the material is very familiar, Luther has a fresh take on the songs and he delivers all of them with a lot of energy. There's really not a weak cut on the disc and for those of us who never saw Luther in concert, this is a great memento. Many of the cuts feature some fine jams and the disc is a very generous length also.
Well, okay.............2004-11-12
If you like your blues played loud and frenzied, more like blues-rock than Muddy Waters, this album should be a treat.
"Live In Montreux 1976-1994" features recordings from four different appearances at the Montreux festival, and Luther Allison shreds his guitar on "Sweet Home Chicago" and "The Sky Is Crying", and plays an almost Allman Brothers-like 11-minute rendition of Howlin' Wolf's hit "The Red Rooster".
I'm really trying to be objective here, see?
And there are a number of fine performances here, certainly. A relatively tight "Gambler's Blues" and the B.B. King-like "Bad Love", for instance, but Luther Allison is no match for men like Muddy Waters or Elmore James in the vocal department, and most of these six-eight-ten-twelve minute songs simply overstay their welcome.
This is good music, but if you enjoy the "real" versions of songs like "The Sky Is Crying", "The Red Rooster", and "The Same Thing", these indulgent versions really don't have a lot to offer. But on the other hand...if you wish that Muddy Waters would have spiced his shows up a little with a handful of hair metal-like guitar solos and a few more five-minute instrumental breaks, well, this is probably right up your alley.
Musically it's not all that interesting, though. It's good, but nothing special. The band lacks swing...they never really manage to dig that deep blues groove, and Luther Allison can't match the intensity of Elmore James or Howlin' Wolf. Men like Stevie Ray Vaughan and (occationally) Johnny Winter have done better when updating 50s and 60s blues tunes to a more contemporary sound.
As I said, there are a number of good performances here, and fans of Luther's style will almost certainly enjoy this album, but if your idea of "real" blues is Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, "Live At Montreux" is a bit of a disappointment.
A searing live performance from one of the best ever.......2001-02-10
The day I saw Luther Allison play live changed me forever. For months after that I practiced the guitar for hours every day, hoping one day to approach his skill level. This is the kind of performer Luther Allison is. This album comes in a close second to his stunning "Live in Chicago". Fans of blues standards may even prefer this one, because it contains his takes on "Sweet Home Chicago", "Little Red Rooster", and "The Sky is Crying", just to name a few. I'll miss Luther to the day I die. He was one of the greatest bluesmen ever. Check out his son, Bernard Allison. His style is different, more Stevie Ray/Jimi influenced, but every bit as exciting and dynamic as his father's.

IF ONLY I CAN GIVE THIS ALBUM A SIX STARS!!!.......2007-04-29
I OWNED MOST OF JOAO'S ALBUMS [SOME OUT THERE WERE SIMPLY RECYCLED] BUT THIS MONTREUX ALBUM REALLY STANDS OUT. THIS IS JOAO IN HIS FINEST HOUR --- THE VOICE, THE GUITAR, THE PHRASINGS. IF YOU HAVEN'T TRIED BOSSA NOVA BEFORE GIVE THIS ONE A SHOT, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
Bossa Nova Doesn't Get Any Better.......2005-02-27
If you're looking for a simple, beautiful record of one man and his guitar, you won't find anything better than this. Such a warm intimate sound--- perfect for a summer night with someone you love.
Magic in one day: 1 man, 1voz, 1 violao...voila!.......2003-08-24
This is one of my top 10 recordings of all time. It is History. Seeing that it is live, it is incredible...and absolutely All of the music recorded that wonderful day should be made available. How many artists can bring a packed audience to such heights with such gentleness and such grace? Very few. The way in which Joao so playfully gets the audience to join him in "Felicidade", and the utter soul-baring in "Estate" are two examples of what a true classic this is. Joao even makes "Garota de Ipanema" sound fresh and like the true classic it always will be. The booklet includes lyrics both Portugese (and Italian in the case of "Estate") with English translation. I could write a book, but just get this and hear Live Magic for yourself.
O Mito.......2003-08-19
Like Thelonious Monk, like Erroll Garner, Joao Gilberto has done little to change his style over the course of his musical life. I saw him play a month ago in San Francisco, and at age 73, all that has really changed is his voice, now colored by age, but not even a great deal. He still plays with tremendous focus and ability. And, like Basie's American swing or Django's European swing, he has his own swing which is purely Brazilian and purely Gilberto. And he still prefers to be his own band, dropping even the spare drums he had in the 60s and 70s. The Montreux show is outstanding. The crowd is very receptive, and usually interrupt the first few seconds of a famous song with applause. It's a strange tradition. In typical Gilberto fashion, he mixes the oldies with some newer songs, most notably Caetano Veloso's "Menino do Rio." The other highlights (though there really aren't any lowlights) are "Morena Boca de Ouro," "Pra Que Discutir com Madame," "Sem Compromisso" and "Preconceito."
FASCINATING!.......2001-09-06
The best... I'm not even a Bossa Nova fan but this CD kept me into it from the first track to the last! It is extremely relaxing and at the same time gives you an incredible eager to move.
You will be captivated by this amazing CD, especially "Sandalia de Prata", "Pra que discutir com Madame", "Adeus America" and the immortal "Garota de Ipanema".

Customer Reviews:
Missed opportunity (but still essential).......2005-10-25
Why are there so many tracks on disc 1 that are readily available on the Sax Pax for a Sax CD? It's too bad more of the impossible to find recordings from this period couldn't have been included instead.
Otherwise, it is great to finally hear some of this material and the disc 2 live concert is a treasure. All things considered, a bargain and a must for Moondog devotees.
Also note the packaging is very attractive -- but unfortunately on my copy, the binding/glue is already falling apart so the CD trays have seperated from the cover... sometimes plastic is a better way to go...
Moondog's last concert!.......2005-10-12
This is a professional production of an official double disc set that was released in 2004 (5 years after Hardin's death.) It looks good and has 44 enclosed pages of valuable information about Moondog, such as a detailed biography, discography, Moondog's own words about the recordings, personnel listings, lyrics, pictures and a poem that Leonard Bernstein wrote to and about Moondog.
Also seeing quotes of Benny Goodman and Frank Zappa praising Moondog's music is particularly exhilarating for a Zappa fan like myself (I had no idea.)
The first disc consists of already released material, most of which I already owned when I bought this set. This disappointed me a bit, as I'd expected additional versions of these titles provided on the back.
The set is called "The German Years," but includes 5 tracks that are taken from "Sax Pax for a Sax" - an album that was recorded in England and performed by English musicians, and consists mainly of material that was written while Moondog lived in New York. Other albums that songs have been taken from are "H'art Songs" (4 tracks,) "In Europe" (4 tracks,) "Elpmas" (4 tracks,) "A New Sound of an Old Instrument" (3 tracks,) "Big Band" (1 track) and "Bracelli" (1 track.)
The 56 minute long disc #2 is the essential music in this set as it consists of only previously unreleased material. It is Moondog's last concert, which was recorded in France on August 1st, 1999 (less than 6 weeks prior to his passing.)
The concert, which consisted of both rare and recent material, was performed on solo piano by Dominique Ponty. At times Moondog joins in on bass drum, and here and there he recites a few couplets - a nice treat. But as always, when it comes to live recordings of solo piano performances, we have to deal with intruding sounds; aside from applause we get a few hundred coughs, a squeaking door that repeatedly opens and closes, at one point the barking of a distant dog, at one point the sirens of an ambulance driving by the recording location, and believe it or not - audience members trying to clap along to one of the solo piano canons! ...but overall the sound quality is very good and clear.
I'd recommend "The German Years 1977-1999" to Moondog fans (who haven't heard his last concert,) but to people who aren't familiar with his work, this might not be the optimal place to start.
Late Moondog.......2005-04-27
When Louis Hardin moved to Europe in 1974, he was received as visiting royalty -- unlike his home country who treated him as some sort of one-joke street-performer. For the next 25 years, until his passing in 1999, he produced an astonishing variety of music for organ, brass band, voice, piano, percussion, small chamber ensemble, and string quartet.
Disc one of this collection contains an anthology of his German recordings, and presents a clear advantage over the originals in that every track is on a different instrument. The listener never gets a chance to grow weary of any one style, allowing you instead to concentrate on the commonalities running through all of Hardin's music. As a sampler of the work done in his senior years (ages 61-83) it's a remarkable collection showing verve, inventiveness and playful iconoclasty.
Disc two presents his last concert, previously unreleased, from Arles France on August 1st 1999, just five weeks before his death. Pianist Dominique Ponty, who I believe is the daughter of famed violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, plays 34 of his pieces for piano or arranged for piano. Louis 'Moondog' Hardin himself accompanies her on tambour, a big skin drum, on several of the tunes, and recites six couplets in his rich ageless baritone.
Also included, a 44-page booklet of photos, notes, lyrics and critical comment. This is a first-class production for one of the last century's most enduring and original composers.

One of the BEST Live Jazz Albums I own.......2004-08-08
I own about 350 jazz records. This one is one of the best of them. You can enjoy Joe Henderson, Roy Haynes and Bassist Gary Peackock along with Master Chick Corea. Just a wonderful live recording in one of the best jazz festivals on earth. I can't find words like critics do to praise it. I don't agree with the 3-stars rating by the above reviewer. Buy it.
Nice Live date by great performers........1999-05-22
The amazing thing about this album is how four great musicians who weren't a working band are able to play as a cohesive group. They are tight. Joe Henderson shows that he was an exceptional hornman before he cam to national acclaim and Roy Haynes restakes his claim to the best under appreciated drummer. Best track is Quartet #3

Blues 101 for the entire band...........2003-09-11
Want to learn some tunes for an "open mike" blues jam? THEN CHECK THIS DISC OUT!!! There is enough material here to keep the serious blues student busy for months. Drummers, harpists, bassists, and guitarists alike. Each one of these tunes are popular at all blues jams (Am I sounding like Jamey Abersold?) For the price it can't be beat!
Good album but..........2000-12-30
I have a problem with how this product is advertised. Neither Junior nor Buddy play in any of the extra tracks, and they are not that good either. Buddy only sings the first 3 songs, the rest are Junior's. Buddy plays a killer version of Hideaway, and Junior's sings 'mojo working' almost as good as Muddy Waters. The extra tracks really spoil the fun.
Best blues CD I own.......1999-11-30
This may not be the best blues CD I will EVER own, but it is definitely the best blues CD I own NOW! Buddy Guy could play circles around Jimmy Page; his playing has speed, grace, and style. And Junior Wells is known as one of the greatest harmonica players who ever lived, but he was also a great singer, in fine form here. Listen to his usually low voice reach those high notes on "Come In This Old House". Wells and Guy were a great team; they do a version of "Messin' With the Kid" to bring the house down. I put this CD on more than any other blues CD I own -- including ones by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and other greats.

I never get sick of listening to this.......2006-04-17
This live recording captures the energy and spirit of the classic New Orleans sound. Also, the playing is tight and the tunes are great!
The only quibble I would have is that the recording is a little on the quiet side - you've really got to crank the stereo to get the full effect. Otherwise, a great one to get.
A great live cd from the depths of New Orleans........1999-02-21
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band take you to the depths of New Orleans with this great live cd. A must have for any music fan.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific live album!.......2002-09-30
So many live albums sound like muffled, hard-to-hear, jumbled messes. But this one transports you there! You really feel like you're part of the crowd. What a great performer. If only I could see her for real! You should also check out "Live at Yoshi's" - another truly great disc!
Dee Dee Bridgewater and her band in harmony.......1999-12-01
Dee Dee Bridgewater and her excellent band capture the life experience of the fantastic Montreaux concert on this lovely album. Those who have seen the concert probably already have this album, if not, they should get it. For those who havn't seen the concert, this album can give a lovely glimpse at Dee Dee Bridgewaters incredible performing style. Even on this recording, you can feel her presence, her wonderful connection to the audience and her exquisite handling of the band. The band in turn is a blessing to Ms. Bridgewater's voice and energy, and is probably among the finest you can hear these days.
