The thematic collections of mood music issued by 32 Jazz are drawn from fine jazz records of the past few decades, and they often include performances of serene beauty. Jazz for a Rainy Afternoon tends toward moody, minor-key tunes, some of them touched by an inner luminosity. Pianists Charles Brown and Hank Jones take very different approaches to Thelonious Monk's best known ballads--"Round Midnight" and "Ruby My Dear"--while there's a subtle, burnished glory in the sounds of trumpeters Wallace Roney, Warren Vache, and Woody Shaw. Guitarist Jimmy Ponder's solo version of "Tribute to a Rose" has a special intimacy, and saxophonist Houston Person and bassist Ron Carter have a thoughtful musical conversation on "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most." --Adam Rains

4 out of 5 stars Hope for Rain.......2005-07-05

I purchased this at the mall one day, motivated purely by the title and cover of this CD. Somehow I knew it would live up to my expectations, and it did. The photo of an attractive girl wandering through an empty parking lot, wearing barely anything on a misty, rainy summer afternoon evokes endless images, which the music caters to.

The jazz tracks are light, reflective, slow, and easy. They are best listened to in solitude. Eleven long-playing tracks - you get a lot for your money. After listening to this album, you may even be inspired to take a walk like the woman on the cover. She is also on the CD itself - like I said, a very attractively designed CD package.

The title would have been too long, but it would not have been wrong to call it Jazz for a Rainy, Summer Afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars A winner CD from start to finish !.......2004-11-03

This is a wise buy . This CD is loaded with rapture in every track you wish . Let's make a random choice .
The version of warren Vaché is one of the most expressive and idiomatic I have ever heard.
Round midnight is the first track and obviously is a deserved homage to Thelonius Monk , this jazz legend . Charles Brown makes a very worthy rendition and wins .
St Louis Blues may be well the jewel crown of this selection . Serenity, erotism and passion hidden behind the score .
Blue in Green is terrific too and Imagination of Woody Shaw is an excellent for having a good fun and pleasant meeting no matter the nature of your encounter be.
Rubby my dear with Hank Jones and My ideal with Sonny Criss are unforgettable works .
In sum this CD is a must for all jazz lovers and even you do not , acquire it too to get closer to this unexhaustive rhythm : the jazz in a rainy afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for those rainy (or snowy) days.......2004-09-15

Note: this review pertains to the original 32 Jazz CD, not the re-released Savoy Jazz version.

"Jazz For a Rainy Afternoon" is the prefect CD for those days where a steady rain is falling and your day is bored. The mood of the selected jazz pieces fits perfectly, and its mellowness will produce that "warm puppy" feeling you get when you hear something exceptionally good.

Fans of classic, laid-back jazz standards will really enjoy this CD, as well as the others in the series.

Worth mentioning: the first track lists Charles Brown as the solo piano, but if you listen carefully, you will hear an acoustic bass in the background.

So on your next rainy (or snowy) day, make yourself a cup of hot, herbal tea, sit back and relax to this great jazz album.

2 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the pretty cover..........2004-02-23

The cover looks professional and promising, but the actual content is little more than elevator music.
Some of the tracks are interesting and fresh, but most of the music is repetitive, unoriginal, and B-O-R-I-N-G. Jazz is supposed to sound improvisational, but this sounds like a bunch of pre-recorded fool-arounds on a keyboard. Yes, keyboard. There are maybe three real instruments used to record the CD.
I understand that this album is part of a whole series of Jazz music for different moods and times of the day, but I haven't heard any of them. Perhaps those were a little more successful than this one.
But all in all, I'm surprised they came up with enough material for two discs.

5 out of 5 stars c'est tres bien.......2003-01-28

I loved this CD. It was great for my bedroom.
