It is with great pride that Collectables presents this seven album box set. Before entering the world of jazz, the Jamaican-born jazz pianist was a well-seasoned and respected classical musician. This compilation spans Shirley's work on Cadence and Atlantic Records from the 50s through the 70s. 78 original tracks on 4 CDs in standard jewel cases housed in a deluxe black wooden box (6 1/2 x 5 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches) with hinged lid. 2003.

I have danced professionaly and taught ballet for over ten years. This is one of the best Ballet CDs I have ever used. Schultz understands dancers and what they need. The tempos and musicality are perfect. This CD compliments Music from Company Class, Vol. 1; it is wonderful to have two volumes of professional music to choose from. It is a delight to have ballet music that is enjoyable to listen to whether you are teaching or giving yourself class. I always have all of Schultz's CDs in my ballet bag.

Doug Shultz has put together a really fine CD. It is a good mixture of classic and contemporary pieces with many original compositions of his own. I particularly appreciate the consistent rhythm he maintains for each excercise. Because I teach ballet basics to gymnasts, the strong tempos are helpful. However, I think any dance teacher would enjoy using this CD. Thanks Doug!

If anyone is looking for a class cd to buy...this is it! I'm an ex professional NYC dancer and have recently retired to teaching. I highly recommend Douglas' cd's "Music from Company Class" Vol.1 and Vol.2. His unique style of playing and choice of songs for class inspires the students as well as the teacher. It makes teaching more exhilerating when you have such great music to choreograph your combinations. These cds are a "must have" to add to your collection. You won't be sorry!

I have danced professionally and taught ballet for over ten years. I have had the pleasure of taking class at Steps in NYC when Douglas Schultz was playing, so I can say first hand that having his CDs are the next best thing to having live music. This is one of the best ballet CDs I have ever used. Schultz understands dancers and what they need. The tempos and musicality are perfect. This CD is complimented by Music from Company Class, Vol. 2; it is wonderful to have two volumes of professional music to choose from. The jacket cover is also very well done. It lists the steps the music is intended for and the length of each piece. He gives each step two tracks(ie. enough music for both sides). In addition to what is listed, the Grand Allegro tracks on both CDs are very good for fouette turns or turns a la second. It is a delight to have ballet music that is enjoyable to listen to whether you are teaching or giving yourself class. I never go on tour without all of Schultz's CDs

This CD is good for any level but, it is excellent for teaching younger dancers. The music is very easy to count without being boring. It will help them to do the steps right just by listening to the music and the accents. The jacket cover is also very well done and teacher-friendly. It lists the steps the music is intended for and the length of each piece. He gives each step two tracks (ie. enough music for both sides). It is a delight to have ballet music that is enjoyable to listen.

        5 out of 5 stars The Wonder of Jan de Gaetani.......2006-02-24

        This volume of recordings by that penultimate interpreter of contemporary music Jan De Gaetani released as a full set of extant recordings is important on any levels. The artistry here displayed is of the highest order and we are reminded of the brilliance of this soprano's quiet career and her importance in the furthering of new music.

        First is a wonderful song cycle by Dmitri Shostakovich s 'From Jewish Folk Poetry' and while there are other recordings of this cycle, few compare to the intense artistry of not only de Gaetani, but also of her colleagues Jon Humphrey, Benita Valente and pianist Samuel Lipman. It glows and sparkles like few other performances. Likewise the 'Abeja blanca' for mezzo-soprano, English horn, & piano by Daniel Welcher (with Philip West horn and Robert Spillman piano).

        But the jewel on this recording is the work 'Scenes From a Novel, for voice, violin, double bass & cimbalom, Op. 19 by Gyorgy Kurtag as performed by de Gaetani and the Speculum Musicae. As a listener I was unaware of this masterpiece until a recent thrilling performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group with Elizabeth Keusch as soprano soloist. The work is a stunning setting of excerpts from a novel by Russian born, Hungarian Rimma Dalos, a novel about a woman's longing for unrequited love. It is both humorous in passages as well as bleak and morose in others. Musically the work abounds in the Hungarian folk music sounds produced by the cimbalom (it is scored for violin, bass, soprano, and cimbalom) and here and there are references to Mahler, to Schnittke, and to Webern. It is fiendishly difficult in both the expansive vocal range and the pulsating demands of the poetic imagery. de Gaetani makes it sound simple and her voice is never less than ravishing.

        This is an important work by an important composer and deserves far more performances than it has achieved. Hopefully with the growth of Kurtag's popularity we will have more opportunities to hear it. Until then, obtaining this excellent recording is highly recommended! Grady Harp, February 06
