Customer Reviews:
At last, oldies but goodies you're not sick of the second time around..........2007-01-26
The movie Hairspray by John Waters boasts a score so good it's almost criminal! This CD contains twelve great songs that deserve much more attention than they ever received; and just one listen proves it.
The great songs on this CD include Toussaint McCall's heartrending ballad "Nothing Takes The Place Of You." Toussaint McCall sings this beautifully and the musical arrangement enhances the beauty of this number. Jan Bradley performs "Mama Didn't Lie" which is another excellent song. Jan sings about protecting her heart from boys who don't want to give her true love. "Foot Stompin'" boasts an infectious beat by The Flares as they sing about dancing to what was once known as "race" music. Excellent!
"You'll Lose A Good Thing" is a very romantic ballad by Barbara Lynn. In this song Barbara reminds her man to treat her well.
One of very favorite numbers on this album is Gene Pitney's "Town Without Pity." Gene delivers this song very well; his voice is strong and energetic. The musical arrangement will stun you, too. Another excellent song is "The Madison Time" by The Ray Bryant Combo. "The Madison Time" is essentially a great instrumental number with a man telling dancers on the dance floor which steps to take. The arrangement is slick, $exy and very catchy, too.
Despite the fact that this CD boasts a fine collection of obscure oldies, the song "Hairspray" was written for the 1988 movie. "Hairspray" represents camp at its best and you will enjoy this number even if it isn't an oldie.
Other great songs on this CD include "I'm Blue (The Gong-Gong Song);" "Shake A Tail Feather" and "The Roach (Dance)."
Some reviewers write that they wish that this CD included more music from the motion picture soundtrack. They are right. I considered making this a four star review for that reason but I concluded that the strength of this CD as it stands merits a five star review. The songs here are just so good I said "Aw, heck" to myself and so I gave it five stars anyway.
The liner notes give the songs credits and John Waters adds a brief essay about the songs on this CD. The graphics are excellent.
Overall, this CD offers a rare opportunity to hear many obscure but wonderful oldies that deserve more play time than they ever will receive. The quality of the sound is excellent even on my portable CD player. Fans of the oldies or movie soundtracks will love this album. May you enjoy this album as much as I have!
Best Song Missing.......2006-10-12
The reason this only gets 4*'s is because it's without the Bunker Hill tune, "Hide And Go Seek (Part 1)".
When the LP was first released, I picked up a copy and was also disappointed not to find the remaining songs from the movie.
For years I had been collecting the songs that brought my best memories
of my youth. Here was a chance to add a few of the rarer ones.
Since then, I've been able to complete my own collection of the tunes of Hairspray. And yes, "Hide And Go Seek" was my number one priority.
I found it on 2 different CD's. "The Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll Vol. 6" on Ace and the ultra-rare, "Do You Remember? 30 Original Golden Oldies" on Mr. Maestro.
Luckily, though, "The Roach", "Footstompin'", "Mama Didn't Lie" and "Nothing Takes The Place Of You" are included in the Hairspray LP/CD, which are very much repsonsible for its 4* rating.
The only so-called weak tunes on this recording are the title track, "Hairspray" and "I Wish I Were A Princess".
where you can find the other 8 songs missing from cd.......2006-05-31
You can find the other 8 songs not on the cd at "Nina's discount records in New Jersey. I did.
Where's the rest?.......2006-04-27
I'd buy this CD in a second if it included all of the songs from the movie.
HIGH WATERS MARK.......2005-12-23
HAIRSPRAY-ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK: From outrageous cult director John Waters' most accessible comedy (starring none other than Ricki Lake, Divine, Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry, and Jerry Stiller!), the audio companion to HAIRSPRAY is every bit as much grand, giddy fun as the fabulous flick, thanks to tastefully obscure song selections from the pre-Fab Four era of 60s pop and RNB. Gene Pitney's dramatic TOWN WITHOUT PITY and Barbara Lynn's YOU'LL LOSE A GOOD THING aside, near-forgotten classics such as Ray Bryant's swinging dance instruction tune THE MADISON TIME, the Five Du-Tones' funky frenzy SHAKE A TAIL FEATHER, and Little Peggy March's bubblegum lipsmacker I WISH I WERE A PRINCESS are crafty, blessedly abstract choices. Throw in the Ikettes' (Ike and Tina's backup singers) soul-saturated I'M BLUE (THE GONG GONG SONG), Brenda Lee-wannabe Rachel Sweet's kitschy title number, and not one, but TWO insect ditties (THE ROACH and THE BUG), and you've got a soundtrack that's pure dance nirvana. So tease yourself with HAIRSPRAY today! RATING: FIVE RAT TAIL COMBS

PURE, LAIDBACK GROVE.......1999-05-11
Ray Bryant may have better albums elsewhere, but this 1987 classic is a must for anyone who likes piano jazz/blues and it is not going to scream and shout at you.
This trio, with Sam Jones on bass and Grady Tate weilding the brushes, can really get into gentle relaxing swinging grind. One of my best piano trio, filed right there next to the likes of Oscar Peterson's, Bill Evan's, etc.
I have worn out my Pablo vinyl and I must get the CD before the dreaded 'Lable out of Stock' is posted. A definite recommendation for anyone who likes to relax with some groovy piano sounds backed by a swaying bass and gentle brush-strokes.

One of Bryant's very best.......2005-04-19
Bryant (p) Ike Isaacs (b) Specs Wright (d) 4/5/57.
Ray Bryant is a great blues pianist, yet this early recording has only one blues piece on it - and the album is still one of the best he ever made. BLUES CHANGES is the blues composition, and it's done slow and way down-home. The best tune on the album, however, is SPLITTIN, an up-tempo swinger. Bryant works well with Isaacs and Wright - the drummer uses a very light touch, especially with the brushes. The CD is a great success. Highly recommended.
Excellent jazz album.......2004-10-30
I started really listening to jazz about two years ago. Since then I am heavily involved in listening and purchasing jazz albums. This album ranks as one of my best buys. The music is so moving that I listen to this album over and over again more than any other album that I own. Ray Byrant Trio is skillfully crafted and I recommend it to all listeners, but especially to those that are learning about this genre of music and not sure how good an album is for purchase. I use this album time and again as the standard for my other purchases.
One of my favorite trio recordings ever..simply soulful.......2003-09-01
Ray Bryant was somewhat of a boy-wonder, in that his playing at an early age seemed to reflect the soulfulness and rhythmic wisdom of a more mature player. Prior to this '57 recording, Ray served as the "house" pianist for the Blue Note, where he played with talent like Miles, Sonny Stitt, and Bird. 1958 found him playing dates with Benny Golson. In '59, Bryant became the "house" pianist at the Newport Jazz Festival, and suprised a whole lot of people with his range and versatility. It may sound like a strange comparison, but Bryant sounds to me a lot like the Cannonball of the keyboard. Both his mother and sister were gospel pianists. This recording, with Ike Isaacs and Specs Powell, grooves the entire way through. Bryant really likes John Lewis' "Django" (he also played it solo at Montreaux in '77) and it shows. Boogie-woogie is a Bryant mainstay and he throws some in on "Django" with impeccable interjection. "Golden Earrings", "Angel Eyes", and, for me, especially Clifford Brown's "Daahoud" are highlights.
Miles Must Have Been Impressed..........2001-04-16
Coming off his first studio gig with Miles Davis (if I read the liner notes correctly,) Ray stands tall as an exceptionally wise sounding kid.
Playing here somtime in his mid-twenties, Ray demonstrates the wonderful stride influence that will gild all his subsequent work. It's as if, every early on, Ray has decided never to take himself too seriously - and as you listen, you always have the sense that he would be just as happy in front of a slightly out-of-tune upright.
This is a great disc, and serves the Bryant collector well as a great benchmark of his early work.
If you are new to Ray Bryant, this disc. will have you asking, "How much better can he get?" Pick up "Somewhere in France," for the answer to that question.
As always, Ray plays without pretense or distraction. Music seems to flow effortlessly from him, as if he is thinking it, rather than playing.
Big Ray is very cool indeed.

The ever inventive Ray Bryant.......2006-08-30
This was Ray's first Pablo album under his own name, a studio date done in 1976 with a trio (George Duvivier [bs] Grady Tate [d]). Everyone plays well and there are numerous highlights. I don't know what the girls are talking about in GIRL TALK, but it's some groovy, funky talk going on, and if it's about a guy, he's one lucky guy. Duvivier also takes a nice bass solo on that one. HOLD BACK MON is a light, airy Bryant tune that has a wonderful day-in-the-park feel about it. Bryant has a terrific way of inflicting the deepest blues feelings into his ballad playing, a la on GOOD MORNING HEARTACHE and LI'L DARLIN'. COLD TURKEY, another composition by Ray, is an up-tempo swinger with a JUMPIN' WITH SYMPHONY SID-like theme to it - a most attractive piece. Ray does some marvelous tension-building things on MANTECA, especially behind the bass and drum solos. But to my ears the best tune on the disc is PRAYER SONG, which is a combination of church music and soul that starts out swinging delicately but builds in power. It's a terrific song played beautifully. Modern piano trio fans will surely dig this CD.
Ten Reasons to Buy This Album.......2001-04-16
1. It's Ray Bryant 2. Though it is not solo, it is the quintessential Ray Bryant album...almost a greatest hits 3. "Hold Back Mon" is a delight 4. "Prayer Song" feels like private prayer that springs into joyous exaultation...what a way to wrap up this album 5. Stand-up base is SO cool 6. It should be the official Ray Bryant primer 7. "Girl Talk" is a delight 8. You will never take it out of the changer 9. It should be THE official jazz piano album 10. It's Ray Bryant

Excellent early Bryant.......2005-04-19
Bryant (solo piano) 12/19/58.
Five of the 7 tunes are blues, Bryant's forte (the 2 least successful tracks are the non-blues). ME AND THE BLUES to me is the best: taken slow, it's a great tune and Bryant does marvels with it. Sometimes solo piano albums find the player getting too introsective or showy, but that's never the case here. Bryant is a joy to listen to. Highly recommended.
Awesome.......2001-03-22
This is my first Ray Bryant album. I've got to say it's one of the best stride albums I've heard. Totally his own style. He really moves, rhythm is great, and chord choices are wonderful surprises. No one could be disappointed.
Bryant Struts His Soul.......2001-01-28
A Prestige gem a la solo! Refreshing, unpretentious, gospel-inflected bluesy-jazz, SOLO piano (hard to believe that this is one man playing alone--never busy, always tasty, the man knows when not to play as well as when to play). The Philadelphia born Bryant after stints with Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, returns to his rooots in this delightful album that you can relax and listen to over and over. Recorded by the Rudy Van Gelder in 1958 in good ole Hackensack, NJ.

Brilliant Work from a Jazz Legend.......2004-11-25
Here's solid music from one piano player who has a long bright history in jazz and has earned a place in the jazz hall of fame. Although every piece is performed solo, Ray makes so much music pour like a river from his instrument that you forget he's sitting out there by himself. Listen in particular to Django. He's alive and brings his energy right to you. We're lucky this performance was preserved.
ray bryant at his peak.......2004-08-25
I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that this must be among the top ten live jazz albums of all time. The music, the sound, the audience involvement - everything seems to be just about perfect. Ray Bryant's piano playing is a treasure...the way he drenches everything in just the right amount of blues and gospel...the sheer joy and exuberance he seems to radiate...it just can't be beat. The fact that the master tape for this wonderful cd was a cheap cassette given to Mr.Bryant by the gig's soundman as a souvenir makes you believe that there is, at times, justice in the world. This is healing music...for the body, for the soul.
Hard to believe.......2004-03-31
The story is that this live performance was recorded on a $1.98 cassette by a fan. The sound is terrific and the solo playing by this almost forgotten jazz-great is at least worth that term. Some the blues go beyond terrific. Finally, it is hard to believe this is the first review on Amazon.

Customer Reviews:
Great Ray Bryant, great trio album.......2006-07-21
Ray Bryant ranks this album, along with his Prestige/New Jazz release ALONE WITH THE BLUES, as his two favorites and who could argue with him: they are both great albums. Bryant is in absolute top form on this disc, and everything works perfectly - even the sound is exceptional (the piano sound is warm and responsive). MILESTONES (everyone knows this from the famous Miles Davis recording) is similar in tempo and format to the Davis, a superb version, with excellent brush work by drummer Mickey Roker. Additional great drumming by Roker can be heard on NUTS AND BOLTS where he interacts splendidly with the melodic line laid down by Bryant. CUBANO CHANT, taken up, is a classy, jaunty tune with a taste of Latin added. AUTUMN LEAVES gets a robust reading, a straight-ahead swinger but with Bryant playing introspectively, too. I love the big fat chords Ray lays down near the end of C JAM BLUES and the overall Erroll Garner feeling this track dishes up. In every way this is a terrific piano trio album, definitely worth having.
Amazing.......2004-04-26
to me that this CD is once again out of print. I first purchased it in about 1961 while in the Air Force in the Philippine Islands at Clark AFB. My friends and I spent many hours grooving to this wonderful recording, and when I left for Japan I gave the lp to them as I was sure it would be easily available. Of course it was out of print. About twenty years ago it was briefly reissued by Columbia and I of course bought one. It holds a very high place in my collection of jazz piano recordings. Bryant is a wizard, in my opinion.
If you can find it, this is a must have recording. The title tune is by Dizzy and swings very soulfully. Cubano Chant is another wonderful piece, this time an original by Bryant. The drummer and bassist are terrific, equal members of the trio but at the same time framing the pianist sympathetically. The whole thing swings like mad, in a deliciously delicate way.
This is one of my desert island cds.
