A must have for any fan of The Manhattan Transfer, or simply any lover of good time, spirited, holiday cheer. Whether you choose to raise the volume and join the chorus, or choose a softer background tone, this collection is not only traditional Christmas, it's tradition Transfer. No fan could possibly be disappointed by this classic. Only Scrooge would miss adding this to his yearly play list. The Manhattan Transfer...melodic and ever better with age.

I saw Manhattan Transfer in Seattle a couple of months before Christmas, and they announced they had this coming out...but I never saw it at the store so ordered it from Amazon. It's really great and includes their kids, who were on their previous Christmas CD at a much younger age.

Glad, for those unitiated, is a Christian vocal quintet that does acappella projects every so often and chose to do one for the holidays.

The good: Focused squarely on religious material so if you want a Frosty and Santa-less Christmas, there you go. It's also nice that they have some unusual choices..only a third of this disc is the same old same old (Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Joy to the World, and O Come, All Ye Faithful..).

The original tune "One Quiet Moment" is the highlight of the disc for me. It views the Nativity through the eyes of Mary and Joseph..Joseph realizing that this would never be "his" child..Mary glad that Joseph had chosen to stay by her side anyway...and both of them realizing that Jesus' mission would have lifelong complications for them ("Their friends would grow distant and shun them as strange"). The arrangement isn't especially original, but that's not why I like this. The lyric truly inspires me to view the Saviour's birth with new eyes.

Other nice ones include the take on "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and the inclusion of the Negro spiritual "Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow" was unexpected but welcome.

The bad: "Glory to God"...entirely too repetitive. Sadly, it's written by Bob Kauflin (who also wrote "One Quiet Moment"..)..perhaps he ran out of inspiration? Ed Nalle's voice floats ethereally over the other four..but the continual "Glory to God" just gets boring...In general, maybe they treated the songs too "reverently"...I believe it's possible to innovate the arrangements more and "have fun" without POKING fun. I realize they probably wanted to appeal to traditional audiences here, but I think they could have incorporated elements of jazz, swing, or doo-wop for instance to breathe new life into some of the old chestnuts.

Summary: This won't knock your socks off cut for cut, but it's worth getting to have some great not-overused material like "Rise Up,Shepherd, and Follow" and "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" as well as the wonderful original "One Quiet Moment".

I don't usually listen to Christian music, but I love this CD at the holidays. Most of the songs have a little "twist" on the traditional harmonies. You really want to sing along with the songs. It's an uplifting and inspring holiday CD! My favorite song is "One Quiet Moment."

We've had this CD for years and years, yet it's the first one we bring out at Christmas. "One Quiet Moment" is an amazing song, and the harmonies in "O Come Emmanuel" will have you putting the song on repeat. This CD is high quality and I recommend it 100% to anyone who is looking for Christmas music that is both peaceful and exciting at the same time. It's magical.

You've got to hear this song tract from this CD. It has been playing in my head all day. The lyrics are great. The melody is smooth yet powerful. I find myself becoming more intimate with Mary and Joseph the parents of Jesus - all because of this song. The other songs are pretty good, too, but THIS song is a must listen to. You'll be refreshed and encouraged when you do.

I own literally dozens of Christmas CD's and tapes and this one is by far my family's fovrite.
We have never heard such glorious harmonies and such a unique selection of Christmas music.
We have had the opportunity now to have seen GLAD in concert on two occasions. What We wouldn't give to hear them sing some of the selections from this CD!
You will be blessed with any of this group's many fine offerings - but this is one of their best!

Forget about all those boy bands with the superficial pop trappings and hordes of teenage-girl followers. The Blenders, hailing from Fargo, North Dakota, and now living in Minneapolis, sing with more genuine soul and smarts than any number of their better-known peers atop the teenybopper charts. More in the school of the Persuasions, Manhattan Transfer, and All-4-One, this eloquent foursome make merry and bright in a collection of standards that run from "Do You Hear What I Hear?" to "Let It Snow," this one played as a campy lounge act for almost as many laughs as the Bobs's hilarious "Santa's Got a Brand New Bag." Levity aside, the Blenders' arrangements of such classics as "The Christmas Song," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and others, blending jazz and a cappella techniques, classic choral music, R&B, and pop, frankly leave hundreds of other such Christmas covers out in the cold. This is the only CD I have by the Blenders. I am a big fan of a cappella done well, and that is what they do. I like that it's not a 50's "do wop" sound, but a sound for today. The price is usually good on this one, so you can't go wrong!

This is the BEST Holiday CD I have ever heard. I use it for Christmas parties with my friends, at work, as background music at Christmas dinner. No one who has heard this CD has ever failed to comment on it, in fact I had to ship it in from another state because it was so popular in Minneapolis. The blending of their voices is beautiful, the best part is that they don't try to change these traditional songs to "personalize" it with their style as so many artists do. This is just a great collection of our favorite songs, sung so beautifully. If you are going to buy any gift for your family and friends this year, buy this! Every year since I purchased it, this is the first thing I listen to to welcome the Holiday season.

You know, the older I get, the more I love the subtle elements of the holiday season. In my youth, it was always the bright colors of the decorations and paper, the loud pop versions of carols. Now, however, I look for the gentle harmonies and the sense of style long absent from Christmas CDs. The Blenders have scored amazingly high in the style category, with such unique arrangements of traditional standards. The most amusing song has to be the Tiki Lounge version of Let It Snow! Full atmosphere with noisy diners, clinking glasses, and inebriated revelers make it a delight. For the more traditionally minded, Angels We Have Heard On High is a rich, choral arrangement that perfectly shows off the Blenders...well, blending. Marvelous. Buy it.

I've seen The Blenders perform twice when they've come to Dallas and knew I wouldn't be disappointed with their Christmas CD. All I can say is it's the best holiday music in my collection. Their harmony is wonderful, their sense of humor shows through and I will listen to this all throughout the year -- as soon as the person I loaned the CD to returns it. Simply Awesome.

    Primarily A Cappella is a label devoted-surprise-to a cappella choral singing: vocal jazz, barbershop, national contest winners and local quartets alike. This CD is the label's second sampler designed to display the range of their offerings in holiday arrangements (their first, "A Cappella Christmas Party," is perhaps even better-but just a touch). The result is a wide-ranging, entertaining, thoroughly professional enterprise. Choral superstars like the Swingle Singers and Chanticleer (singing "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," not "In Dulci Jubilo" as listed on the CD) mix with the lesser-known but superb likes of First Call and the Blenders as well as popular classics such as the Persuasions and wonderful groups you've never heard of. Highlights include M-Pact's syncopated "Caroling, Caroling," the Edlos's haunting "Sim Shalom," the Accidentals's hilarious "Rudiana," and Go Fish's doo-wop "Away in a Manger," but every cut has something to recommend it.

      This recording will enthrall you from the first swinging sounds of "Jingle Bells".

      The Manhattan Transfer has done something I swore could not be done...they bettered their 1992 Christmas album!

      The album features the usual close, lush harmonies, and the beauty of the song "Toyland" will have to be experienced to be believed. While the work is not strictly "a capella" (in the style of the chapel; singing without instruments) the instrumental accompaniment heard throughout is understated and quietly supports the singers.

      Be warned ..."Good King Wenceslas" features children's voices, which, while pleasant, are by no means professional (though there is one lovely young women's voice heard at one point...she has a definite gift).

      I hope MT chooses to release this in America soon, rather than keeping it as in import only. But it does not matter...An Acapella Christmas is worth the the additional expense!

          Primarily A Cappella is a label devoted - no surprise - to a cappella choral singing: vocal jazz, barbershop, national contest winners and local quartets alike. This CD is the label's first sampler designed to display the range of their offerings in holiday arrangements (their second, "A Voices Only Christmas," is very nearly as good as this one). The result is an eclectic, energetic, entertaining collection. There are excellent tracks from such vocal jazz dependables as the Swingle Singers, the Blenders (a smoooooth "First Noel), the Real Group, the Persuasions, the Nylons, and Rockapella (the bittersweet "Hold Out for Christmas"). Other standouts include the Haven Quartet's syncopated, ecstatic "Joy to the World," La Bande Magnetik's hilarious "Casse Noissettes," and especially the House Jack's thrilling "Saturnalia Smile," but the whole CD is a delight.
