KETELBEY -- MASTER OF EVOCATIVE MOODS.......2002-11-21

The music of Albert W. Ketelbey appealed to me on first hearing, many years ago. His works are not 'heavy' classical compositions, but rather light, gently and sweetlt evocative of distant places and exotic cultures -- embodying a particularly British, empirical reflection of these cultures without belittling them in the least.

This cd is an assemblage of historic recordings, lovingly transferred from 78s from the 1920s and 1930s. Ketelbey himself conducts the orchestra on several tracks, and is featured on piano on two ('The clock and the Dresden figures' and 'Algerian scene') -- his presence here gives the modern listener a rare opportunity to hear the composer's interpretation of his own works. The collection was assembled from the recorded library of Stuart Upton, who also serves as producer and contributes some informative notes.

Leave It To Japan..........2003-08-31

This is one of the best hard-swinging big-band concerts from the past 50 years; this band just roars thru two night of live recording. The quality is clean, and except for the fact that it's mono, it could have been recorded yesterday. And I'm sure the liner notes are great, if only I could read Japaneese.

Really sad, though, that USA record companies couldn't care less about supporting the treasure of great American music. I paid $$$ for these two CD's...doesn't that send a message that there's an audience willing to spend $$$ to get this stuff???

All Les Brown followers, collectors, admirers are familiar
with the music offered here. Recorded live in 1953 at the
Hollywood Palladium and released on CORAL RECORDS in early 1954; Les himself has said these were the best recordings the band ever did, AND with the best band he ever led! Since the advent of the compact disc in the early 80's, Les and his management people have tried in vain to have MCA release the set on CD...MCA, owner of Decca and Coral steadfastly refused to issue the set...
until now; and it took Universal-MCA Japan to do it...and what a job they have done! Beautiful packaging and presentation here.
The set IS pricey...$... + S&H....and is WORTH EVERY CENT!
The package is done as a gatefold with each of the 2 discs in soft linen inserts within the gatefold. All info that appeared on the LP sets are here, the original Coral record labels are reproduced with ALL INFORMATION! Liner notes are in Japaneese, but all collectors have the original notes anyway. Song titles ARE in english. The music repro is simply fab, the usual difference between the quality of the LP vs the CD....it's all here, guys...knock yourselves out....buy,buy,buy it...you won't be sorry.....Don Wood

Poor sound quality, not enough Bing.......2001-12-22

I was fortunate enough to see Bing Crosby sing live in 1977, four months before his untimely death. Though I was not at the concert recorded on this disc, the event I saw was identical as to the performers and the sequence of songs here at the Palladium concert.

There's nothing wrong with Rosemary Clooney, per se, but I remember being terribly disappointed that she was on stage for so much of the evening. This tragedy is repeated here on this record. Who wants to hear Rosie wailing away on "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover" (ouch, the nadir of this album) when Bing is what you want to hear? His rendition of "Send in the Clowns" is outstanding, but why did Bing choose to perform just a brief medley of some of his great songs? He sings "Pennies from Heaven" for about ten seconds and then segues into ten more seconds of "I'm An Old Cowhand." Crosby fans who scream whenever Sinatra's name is mentioned have to reckon with this fact: Frank would *never* have sung a medley of his songs, only the full versions would do. Bing, I wish you would have followed that example.
