Bela Fleck is one of the greatest five-string banjo players performing today. Beginning in the 1970s, he honed his lightning-fast chops performing bluegrass, then moved on to contemporary jazz and fusion sounds. With this album, he broadens his horizons once again by performing an entire program of classical music transcriptions. Reminiscent of classical guitar albums by John Williams (who makes a guest appearance here), the disc traverses a wide range of repertoire--from Chopin mazurkas to Bach's Two and Three Part Inventions. Throughout, Fleck displays a feathery touch on his banjo, and his instrument offers a pleasant, brassy tone with very little twang. The technique he displays on Perpetual Motion is astounding and a refreshing change of pace from the smooth grooves found on the banjoist's Flecktones recordings. The arrangements are generally minimalist and understated, but violinist Joshua Bell, bassist Edgar Meyer, mandolinist Chris Thile, and percussionist Evelyn Glennie join in on this groundbreaking disc. Bluegrass purists may be disappointed (this is a far cry from the free-spirited, folksy abandon found on Sony's Short Trip Home and Appalachian Journey CDs), but classical fans will be astounded by how perfectly natural Fleck's banjo sounds on these works. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and beautiful.......2007-01-02

Fleck's 2001 disc `Perpetual Motion' is by far his most ambitious foray into virtuosity, performing classical works by Bach, Scarlatti and Chopin.

And he does it without really showing off. He only tackles mazurkas, fugues and Bach classical inventions on the five-string banjo, a simple instrument for which this music was never conceived.

I once flirted with playing the banjo, and it wasn't an easy task, even trying to play 'Uncle Pen'.

But the man must be possessed to play it like Bela does. Alternating between delicate and complicated, slow to fast, Fleck gets about as much out of the humble banjo as anyone possibly could. He plays it precisely and with a light touch, with respect for the music and his instrument.

Some reviewers think it pretentious of Fleck to attempt a banjo foray into the classical genre. That's bunk. How is virtuosity measured, after all? By playing many genres: classical, bluegrass, pop, jazz, Indian, fusion. And by playing them well.

Fleck wasn't awarded a Grammy for this recording just by looking pretty. He earned it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Bela Fleck Masterpiece!.......2006-09-17

Who knew there could be classical banjo. It may sound dumb to some of you, but Bela Fleck pulls it off perfectly. I prefer the jazz fusion of his work with the Flecktones, but that does not mean this is not brilliant. Technically speaking, Bela and all of his collaborators are the best around, and who can argue with the songwriting of the classical composers(no one openly insults Mozart). If you haven't heard Bela Fleck, here's some advice. Get one of his Flecktones albums if you're into jazz, rock, or funk, this if you like classical, and his Newgrass Revival, Strength in Numbers, or Sam Bush stuff if you're a bluegrass fan.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a Winner.......2006-07-05

It is apparent to my ears why this CD won a Grammy. It takes familiar classical music pieces and puts the distinct Bela Fleck style on them. The pairing of the banjo with different instruments makes this album texturally interesting for the ear and one does not tire of the selections, even if they are familiar. My favorite pairing is the marimba with the banjo. The liner notes are interesting, as is Bela's story on how difficult it was to make the album. It was definitely worth his time and the listener's .

5 out of 5 stars Soul Food.......2006-01-30

This is exquisite! The best of human experience encoded on a simple CD disk.

5 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING WORK ! ! !.......2005-11-12

I was searching a classical music CD for a long time which is something different.Which consists variety of instruments. Like guitar,violin,banjo,mandolin...for example.Something different and also exiting music. This CD fullfills my wishes. The music like this doesn't come up very often I suppose!
Béla Fleck did a great job by working with people who is masters of their instruments like John Williams etc. This causes the CD to be more joyful. You won't get bored to listen it again and again!
Anyway ,either you are a fan of classical music or not, you won't be dissapointed with this.I guarantee :)

This set of Anna Russell's inspired satirical monologues should be labeled with a warning notice. Why? Because after listening to her whirlwind explication of Wagner's Ring Cycle, even the most confirmed Wagnerite will be unable to listen to the Ring for weeks to come. Just listening to Russell declare in an incredulous voice: "I'm not making this up, y'know" is enough to induce you to shed bucketloads of laughter-induced tears. Gilbert and Sullivan fans will find their heroes savaged in her concoction of a typical G&S product, complete with a soprano lead who "loves below her station." Other targets include "the nymphs and shepherds" style of quavery English singing, complete with "hey-nonny-nonny's," coloratura mad scenes, and much else, including Russian folk songs, like her "Da, nyet, da, nyet." This disc is packed with laughs, chuckles, smiles, and everything. --Dan Davis

3 out of 5 stars Intelligent and musical fun.-.......2007-01-13

Due to the recent passing away of the legenday Anna Russell I bought this record and certainly did not regret it.- Inspite of having been originally recorded in 1952 and 1953 the sound is very good.- Ms. Russell combines a great sense of humour with profound musical knowledge, a wonderful timing of her jokes, and the talent of a gifted and very musical singer.- She captures the essence of the German lied, the French mélodie, the efforts of a dramatic soprano to make herself heard over the huge Wagnerian orchestra, culminating in her famous, already classic, 22 minutes long analysis of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungs.- I listened to this recording three times in a row and had great fun.- Only Victor Borge can be compared to her with respect to this rare combination of deep musicianship with a real gift for comedy.- If you don't know yet these numbers, don't hesitate - buy the record, you will not be sorry.-

5 out of 5 stars The Genius of Anna Russell.......2006-03-15

If you love music, but are happy to see the funny side of even the great composers, then this album is for you. Anna Russell is a singer of note but a comedian of greatness. She finds the pivotal styles of composers and caricatures them to great effect. The explanations she gives of the basics of Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas and the way she dissects Wagners Ring Cycle bring tears to the eyes with laughter. I recommend this album to all music lovers with a twinkle in their eyes. Truly a great comic experience.

5 out of 5 stars If you enjoy laughing.........2006-02-23

I love opera, but I also enjoy spoofs of opera. Anna Russell was a classic "spoofer" of operatic stories and conventions. Nobody does it better. My favorite on this album is her take-off on Wagner's "Ring."

This CD can probably also be enjoyed by those who have only a nodding acquaintance with opera, but may not be enjoyed by those who take opera with 100% seriousness.

5 out of 5 stars Anna Russell strikes again!.......2005-10-14

I have heard all of these Anna Russell selections at one time or another, but having them all together in one place, and on a CD, is a real plus. She is absolutely riotously funny. I teach a course in "Introduction to opera" and use her segments on Gilbert and Sullivan and on the Ring Cycle in class, just to lighten things up a bit for the students.

5 out of 5 stars Anna Russell is a SCREAM!.......2005-08-05

I've had the vinyl of this album for over 20 years; the CD purchase was to update my system. For anyone who loves classical vocal music, and in particular the Wagner Ring Cycle and Gilbert and Sullivan, this album is a MUST. You will split your sides laughing; Ms. Russell is so very accurate in her comedy. Also, truth to tell, her Ring synopsis gave me, a newcomer to Wagner (years ago) a solid understanding of the musical plot and story line.

5 out of 5 stars A Music Score Benchmark.......2006-07-15

This soundtrack is one of my continuing favorites. I tell you that for film scores, this one sets the bar pretty high. Since this soundtrack was released, I have personally used this one as the benchmark test for any new stereo equipment I have purchased. The spectrum of sound included, in the second track in particular, will test the speakers of a new sound system better than many test disks that I've seen. The sound is able to pull you into your mental review of the film more effectively than most other soundtracks out there, with certain exceptions of course. This soundtrack is overall that which many scores fail to be, a musical painting of the film, not just filler music. This is a memorable disk for a memorable film.

3 out of 5 stars Good sound, but themes are redundant.......2005-08-06

I enjoy this CD very much. The music has a sweeping charm and romantisicm to it. My only problem is that this score pretty much consists of two themes, the Rocketeer Theme and Jenny's theme, played over and over again. There's nothing wrong with the two themes, on the contrary they are both very enjoyable, but the CD simply needs more variety.

On a different note, the Cole Porter songs are wonderful for anyone who enjoys his music, and the singer has a sultry voice that's perfect for the selection.

5 out of 5 stars Heroic images.......2004-10-16

Superman and Batman two heroes who get all the movies, toys, cartoons, etc... however with the Rocketeer we can start a new trend. Th Music by Horner fits right in with Superman by Mr. Williams and surpasses Mr. Elfman's work in Batman. on my Mix for heroes I included the Rocketeer as a tune for the golden Age Green lantern The Current GL has the Last Starfighter The Rocketeer is a thrilling adventure of the likes we just dont see any more The Music by Mr. Horner frames it and matches the spirit of it all so perfectly. you could have the worst day of your life and yet feel like a million bucks after listening to this sweeping score!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Score! One of Horner's best........2004-10-09

Since he wrote the score for Braveheart and won an Oscar for Titanic, James Horner has been among the most disappointing of film composers. His works have been highly derivative and this often makes the listener deride the composer for his lack of so-called talent. The Rocketeer proves te depth of Mr. Horner's talent. It's sweeping melodic main theme is a perfect counterpoint to the theme of flight running throughout the movie. His love theme is a classic old fashioned melody that perfectly fits with the movie and his use of the piano to subtly bring out the movie is totally fantastic. The Rocketeer is among the best of James Horner's works and is one of his most enjoyable scores. His work is truly a masterpiece. While the movie's special effects may seem dated, Horner's score is immortal and shows just how beautiful his music is when he writes original music.

5 out of 5 stars The Rocketeer: Another great James Horner score.......2003-08-02

After "Krull" this is my favourite James Horner score. The main theme is brilliant and there is a good balance between action music and slow music. Some tracks contain the "suspense/bass motif" from "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan". Horner uses this motif often in his work, I like that.
My favourite track is "The Flying Circus", a fantastic action cue. (The bass-trombone is great!!)
The track "Jenny" is very beautiful, and one of Horner's best love-themes ever.
There are also two jazzy songs on the album. I think they are very good.
If you are a fan of James Horner, or you like Star Trek II, you might enjoy this cd very much.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Another opinion.......2006-06-14

I absolutely love Deva Premal's voice and CDs. This was a huge disappointment for me. I don't like almost everything on this CD. There's nothing remarkable about Miten's voice, even though it's certainly nice to listen to. His lyrics are banal. Sweet and heartfelt, but hackneyed.
There's nothing really bad about the music, but most of it is Miten by himself (the ones with Deva are far better, to my ear), and I honestly can't find anything to recommend it.
I only gave it two stars for the few songs that are predominantly Deva's voice.
As much as I am dissing this CD I wouldn't hesitate to recommend "Love is Space." So, if you're expecting something along those lines, don't get this as it's totally different.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful CD to celebrate committed partnerships!.......2006-05-20

My girlfriend introduced this cd to me, and I have to say, I'm almost as much in love with this music as I am with her :) !!! It's a 'must have' for any couples who are truly committed to growing healthy partnerships of love. It celebrates the beauty that is at the heart of each one of us and gives such wonderful reverential acknowledgment to the divinity in all.
We've already decided that this will be the music we will choose for our wedding as we shared our first dance to the magnificent sentiments expressed in song by Miten and Deva Premal.
You won't be disappointed!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal! Definetly A Must Have!.......2007-04-19

The title says it all. I've always appreciated Vesta's vocal capabilitiesand how she's always been able to wrap herself any musical composition. She's proven why she has been able to maintain the longevity as an artist as she have. Now its time for her to start touring again! This is it Vesta!

4 out of 5 stars Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice, Vesta!!!!!.......2007-03-27

I have always appreciated the uniqueness of Vesta though she suffered terribly in the beginning because of obvious and unavoidable comparisons to Chaka. Slowly but surely she carved out her own niche and showed us there is indeed room for two similar female vocalists whose range in many instances simply defies boundaries. Vesta is now among sought-after upper echelon session musicians having worked with the likes of such heavyweights as George Duke.

I first listened to this on a beat-up work radio and was not all that impressed. Then while downloading music at home ran across it again and I was NOT well!!!

Vesta is indeed bringing it with this set. She displays the vocal acrobatics she has become known for and delivers some excellent performances on tried and true R&B classics. Interestingly enough, when initially reading the list of selections, they appear rather lackluster.

But just put this bad boy on!!!!

I highly recommend as a viable cover project with a freshness and vitality that is not necessarily easy to do with the selections here. Standout cuts include "Use Me" (yep, THAT one), "If You Want Me To Stay", "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", "Whip Appeal", "Free", "Distant Lover" - gee - the whole project IS that good.

Highly recommend!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Welcome Return.......2007-03-24

Vesta - where have you been hiding? We missed you! Die hard Vesta fans such as myself have been waiting patiently for many years for new material. I am happy to report this CD was worth the wait, but I must admit I do love the "Jazz" side of Vesta and I hope she continues to make guests appearances on recordings of the many smooth jazz artists that love & adore her.

Distant Lover is well produced and most of the arrangements hit the mark. Vesta is in fine voice, yet we do not get to hear the upper register that often nor the infamous wailing that is present on the albums from the 90's. Nevertheless, Vesta shines on this CD and you will be very happy with this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Vesta's comeback CD and an inspired covers' album........2007-03-12

It's just wonderful to have Vesta bring us some new music--and an inspired covers' album at that!!! Her remakes of "Whip Appeal", "Knocks Me Off My Feet" and "Distant Lover" are all fresh and exciting and it's all too obvious that Vesta still has a lot to offer. Sadly, both the production and overall musicianship/orchestration are lacklustre and merely acceptable at best (a recurring problem on most recent Shanachie R&B releases) but Vesta is an artist with whom it's quite difficult to make a bad album--as such, the pluses far outweigh the minuses. Not perfect but one of 2007's best R&B CDs thus far...

3 out of 5 stars Vesta - Distant Lover.......2007-03-09

A couple of songs are good; a couple are just alright; and a couple missed the mark completely for me.

Album Description

"This band has Official High Pop Harmonies and you actually should listen to them and make them your new favorite band." -- THE FADER

"The vocals on Carry the Wood, the third recording by Philadelphia-area rockers The Teeth, suggest what Alex, the protagonist in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film A Clockwork Orange, might have sounded like had he been a sunny, loopy petty criminal rather than a vibrantly bitter sociopath." -- WASHINGTON POST "Ostensibly born with identical vocal cords, twin brothers Aaron and Peter MoDavis's harmonies on Carry the Wood are thicker than blood as they cull Brit rock from the Kinks to Costello." -- CMJ NEW MUSIC MONTHLY

Philadelphia's infamous foursome, The Teeth, spent the better part of 2006 locked away in a Northeast Philadelphia warehouse/studio. After spending most of 2005 and early 2006 touring the US in support of its 2005 EP Carry the Wood, the band was nearly out of sight. While the studio sound of The Teeth has been compared to the Beatles, early Bowie, and the Elvis Costello, the band's live performance has been likened to the Minutemen, Pavement, and even the Stooges. Thunderous bass lines, roaring brass sections, hand claps, foot stomps, jangly guitars, growls, screams, and of course those ever-so-beautiful harmonies that Teeth fans know and love--not to mention enough ideas to drive you insane. Recorded and produced by The Teeth and mixed by Nick Krill of the Spinto Band, You're My Lover Now will be ready for your embrace in late April 2007. It will be backed by extensive touring, lots of publicity, and of course, a "strong will to succeed."

5 out of 5 stars Knocked Out by The Teeth!.......2007-06-08

YOU'RE MY LOVER NOW is The Teeth's RUBBER SOUL: a breakthrough album that fulfills all early promises but takes things to a higher level.

They've never sounded so good on CD, and repeated listenings only sharpen one's appreciation of the artistry of Aaron, Pete, Brian, and Jonas.

Not only are The Teeth muscial, funny, surreal, manically energetic, unabashedly intelligent, and consistently surprising but also they are masters of what The Beatles sometimes called "gimmicks"--in the same way that Beethoven and Bach used gimmicks.

Their songs mix things up; they evolve and shift shape; they start one place and end up somewhere wholly unexpected. Honky-tonk piano, hand-claps, grunts, random chatter (is it really random?), shock openings and closings, melodic lines that won't leave your head--it's all here.

For those unfamiliar with the boys, Brian Ashby is the band's Hendrix, a guitar wizard whose hands and fingers fly faster over frets than hummingbird wings. Aaron Modavis is the lyric-writing eye of the Teeth's hurricane, a gentle verbal genius whose lyrics allude to T.S. Eliot, King Crimson, The Kinks, and everything in-between. Twin Pete Modavis is the meanest bass player I've ever seen live: big thrumming fingers that George Harrison would have admired. The twins play off each other telepathically, but Brian is utterly in synch with their Apollonian madness. Watching them live, they'll suddenly soar into leaping, hopping, flapping, perfervid Dionysian frenzies that are wholly controlled. Drummer Jonas? He's a rock-steady tubthumper whose polyrhythms keep pace with all the key shifts, time-signature twistings, and vocal pyrotechnics of the other three (who have been playing together for over a decade).

On YOU'RE MY LOVER NOW (the title song whose first words--"Stupid girl!"--are as romantic as the Stones' song of the same name), we enter realms of weddings where a bridesmaid pops a lude; a scenic swimming pool where the narrator's anorexic girlfriend is talking on the phone to the coolest kid at school; the world of Molly (a la "Ob-la-di, Ob-la da"?), whose nightmare may end with flowers blooming; and so much more ("I only care about me!"). Here, form fits content at a level never-before reached by the band--and it's all danceable, listenable, memorizeable, canonizeable.

These guys are ready for ROLLING STONE coverage--and it's about time! (TIME should cover them, too!) Little Steven's Underground Garage may not yet have added The Teeth to its stable of Rock 'n' Roll that Will Save The World, but it's gonna happen soon.

Do yourself a favor: buy this CD and discover what rock always has been: cerebration, liberation, intoxication, jubilation, and celebration.

5 out of 5 stars Best of 2007.......2007-05-26

Amazing album from Philidelphia's best. I believe that The Teeth have have been put on this planet to bring melody back to rock and roll. Not to pile on to the usual comparisons, but this record really can remind you of the Beatles, Bowie, Elvis Costello, and the Zombies. Don't get me wrong, it's not a throwback or a cheesy imitation. It's just a reminder of the lack of melody and pop-tunesmanship that exist in rock music today. Excellent playing, lyrics and harmonies reign all over this wonderful album. It has a classic analog sound which only adds to the warmth of the band's music. They're also an amazing live band. I was lucky enough to catch them in Buffalo about a month ago, and they absolutely blew me away. So do yourself a favor and pick up this record or go see these guys live. They really are a breath of fresh air.

Donna de Lory has several solo albums out, but she's still best known as a back-up singer for Madonna, fleshing out choruses since the mid 1980s. There's more than a little bit of Madonna in De Lory's voice, at once fragile and vulnerable, yet still powerful, with a gospel-like yearning. On her own, De Lory has crafted artful pop on albums like Bliss and In the Glow, but she also tends toward the mystical and began incorporating Sanskrit mantras or Kirtans into her songs, a tact culminated on The Lover & the Beloved, a full-fledged Mantra journey. De Lory draws from the golden oldies of mantras, including "Hare Krishna," but revs them up with electronica beats, verse-chorus arrangements, multi-tracked vocals, and electronic textures sprinkled in with the sitars and tablas. Cameron Stone weaves his processed cello through De Lory's melodies and harmonium in serpentine rivulets, tying together the tablas of Girish Gambhira and the answering chants of Kirtan singer, Dave Stringer. Endowed with the materiel girl's sense of pop form and irresistible hooks, De Lory posits a confluence between pop and spiritual music, in which a repeated chorus has the same mantric effect as a chant. Her chants could be hymns to Krishna or a plea to a lover, but they are equally ecstatic and powerful. --John Diliberto

Album Description

These Sanskrit mantras bubble with a groove and atmosphere that takes tradition to heaven and back. Donna's voice resonates with ether and earth, beauty that asks you to join in, become one with the sound of deep celebration.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-06-26

This is a wonderful CD of chants that are both up to date and ancient at the same time. It is calming to the soul to listen to, and later in the day you will find youself chanting the words.....

5 out of 5 stars Soothing. Peaceful. .......2006-09-12

I love all these songs! Soothing and tranquil.

They last a long time which is perfect for use as background music while working or while chatting with friends.

It makes it easier to relax to the melody, let your cares float away as the music wraps around you.
It's one of my favorites, I'm so glad I took a chance and got this one:)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Soulful Yoga Music.......2006-03-18

Donna De Lory has a beautiful, soulful voice and her music is perfect to practice yoga to or to unwind and get into that zenlike spirit. I ordered the rest of her CDS.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant masterpiece.......2005-09-12

This album is a brilliant masterpiece. Extremely uncommon music, farly outrunning the present. A listener is experiencing a deep feeling of being, also as each piece here, so long, is being changed several times in movement and style. At this web page the short mp3 shows are only presented in one such a style and movement, more torrential but less oriental. The most varied piece is the last seventh: Govinda Jaya Jaya (Mac Quayle Mix). And what's more, the box for the CD is not the traditional plastic, but it is made quite else and I do not mean to disclose, how. For me it was an eye-opener and I wish you the same excitment. It is no lesser masterpiece than the music itself. So I recommend this album to everybody and thank the authors very much for this great experience. You're real masters.

5 out of 5 stars Just love it!.......2005-04-11

A lovely album. Donna brings a sense of creativity, melody and bkathi (devotion) to each of the songs. It starts with a catchy Ganapathi OM, continuing with the same catchiness with Om Namah Shivaya. He Ma Durga brings out the delicacy of her voice. I loved Govinda Jaya Jaya, which is ideal for a group chant that brings a lot of energy into the singing.

I found all the songs to be melodious. The lyrics are simple for anyone to remember easily. The tune is catchy and lingers on after listening. There is a nice blend of western and Indian instruments providing soothing background music. As in many Indian songs/chants, you will find repetition within each song, which is a nice thing. You probably will not notice it as it encourages you to remember the tune/song much easily.

I use this album in my Yoga classes regularly and come away humming for a long time. Just love it!

5 out of 5 stars Simply great Sibelius.......2006-05-15

At less than 20GBP, this set offers a most excellent initiation to the world of Johan Sibelius s'masterly work. A nice collection, that includes the symphonies (1--7) with important compositions such as the ever fascinating Kulervo and myriads of "TonePoems". The L.S.O play together with dedication, the sound and direction by sir Colin Davis increase the impression of greatness in the music. I was a little skeptical of the new Davis Kulervo "live", of which I prefer this one on rca, but been of course amazed by the L.S.O.Live powerful versions of symphonies 3 & 7. Otherwise, I generally love this uniformly excellent set, even more so than the earlier cycle in Boston of which I still like, above all, symphonies 5&6. Here, with this rca set, the "highlights" are to be found in symphonies 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, as well as in a bracing and quite dramatic Kulervo. Among the poems, En Saga and Pohjola really shine along with a wonderful Suite Karelia. Of course everything is not perfection, but who will pretend to be anyway? I recommend highly this important box set, even more than the competitive 5CD Naxos however very good it is. Davis is a master Sibelian, no doubt about that. Kind regards. m.vuriling

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Performances from LSO and Sir Colin Davis.......2004-12-31

This 7 CD set includes all of Sir Colin Davis' second Sibelius symphony cycle recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra in the 1990's, along with almost all of Sibelius' other major orchestral works, most notably his tone poems (Some of these were recorded as recently as 2000 or 2001.). These are impressive, vibrant performances replete with exquisite playing by the London Symphony Orchestra. Critics have praised Davis' first Sibelius symphony cycle with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as among the best; without question, his second symphony cycle is not only just as fine, but comes with better quality digital sound (However, with respect to sound, the best Sibelius symphony cycle that he's recorded may be the recent one with the LSO Live CD label.). I especially enjoyed the recordings of Sibelius' 2nd, 5th and 7th symphonies, and the tone poem En Saga, but all of Sibelius' works in this CD set are quite fine. Those interested in hearing music made by Sir Colin Davis, widely regarded as our foremost interpreter of Sibelius, with one of the world's greatest orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra, will not be disappointed with this CD set.

3 out of 5 stars A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

5 out of 5 stars Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.
