About the Artist
Born to a musical family in Manchester, England, Joe Burkes talent for singing was always just one of those natural things. We always had a piano in the front parlor because my father was a pianist. Many a time he would finish playing in a pub and friends would want to continue the musical evening so they would bring two or three crates of beer back to our house and my father would play `til the wee hours of the morning. People have always asked me how I came to know so many standards. Since I slept directly above the parlor, I used to listen to them `til 3 in the morning. Although formal lessons were not a part of Joes early training, he nonetheless was infatuated with music. Wherever live music was I wanted to go there. I couldnt wait for weekends because then I became alive. I would visit the local dance halls, which were huge places, full of people, all enjoying themselves, and there before your very eyes were the big bands with all the colored spotlights reflecting off their instruments. That was magic to me. Those were the best times of my life.
After two years in the British Army, Joe returned to Manchester and sought out his old haunts. He also started frequenting workingmen's clubs. Says Joe, they are huge clubs which cater to the working class, run by a committee of working-class people, and are indigenous to England like baseball is to the States. On weekends you cant move in their midst. Youd have a gig at one club, do 45 minutes, pack up and go to the next club, just a few miles away. Two gigs per night, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is where all the stars of England started -Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones.
In his twenties, Joe decided to augment his natural talent by studying voice and piano, and also the vibes with a percussionist with the BBC. However, formal lessons were not to become a major part of his training: After work, this guy would gig around with his big band. He invited me to sing with his outfit because he didn't have a male vocalist. At first I was apprehensive, but I did it. Once I started with his band Im afraid musical lessons just went out of the window. It was this type of practical experience that led to the perfecting of Joes natural and unique style.
My voice is my voice, and my phrasing is my phrasing, says Joe, but the appreciation of other great vocalists is evident in Joes mastery of the melodic line and in his impeccable interpretations. He credits Tony Bennett, Jack Jones, Fred Astaire, and especially Frank Sinatra as being lifetime musical influences. In addition, the only great British singer to influence me was Matt Munro. I had the pleasure of working with him on several occasions and my respect for him grew as his career flourished.
Since leaving his 28-piece band in England and moving to the States, Joe has performed regularly with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra and has worked out with some local big bands in his adopted state of South Carolina. In addition to his live performances, Joe believes it is now important to commit his vast repertoire to Compact Disc. Revere Records, naturally, supports Joes decision, and looks forward to serving his growing legion of fans. Featuring: Joe Burke, Bill Hanna, Tom Hildreth, Rick Dior, and a 12 piece backing string section.
Album Description
From the small, dimly lit, smoke-filled nightclubs of London with piano accompaniment, to the grand concert halls of Europe, with full orchestra backing, Joe Burke has learned his craft well. The respect he has gained from musicians and audiences alike continues to grow. Along with the ever-increasing number of lovers of the "standard classics," I trust that you, the listener, will enjoy Joe's treatment of the music composed by the great popular songwriters of this century.

Pure Gershwin was Michael Feinstein's first album, and it remains one of his best. It may not have the production values of his later Gershwin tributes, Nice Work if You Can Get It (1996) and Michael & George (1998), but it simply and directly presents Feinstein in his piano-bar days, singing to his own tasteful accompaniments with occasional contributions from bass and drums and a second piano. Establishing the patterns for his later albums, he sings unjustly neglected verses to familiar songs, uncovers some never-before-recorded gems ("The World Is Mine," "What Causes That"), and provides song-by-song notes. Longtime friend Rosemary Clooney guests on "Isn't It a Pity?" --David Horiuchi

you cant beat an Ira lyric........2007-01-05
this is good...and just to hear a REALLY GREAT "Isn't A Pity" duet with Rosie is well worth the price of admission. I REPEAT: just to hear a REALLY GREAT "Isn't A Pity" duet with Rosie is well worth the price of admission. listen & enjoy some great american music. you cant beat an Ira lyric.
A Wonderful CD.......2005-05-19
PURE GERSHWIN is just that, pure!. Feinstein interprets Gershwin the way it was meant to be performed. This is pure delight!
Quiet and elegant.......2003-04-20
Michael Feinstein's thin voice is compensated by his apparent enthusiasm for the material and a spare arrangement of piano, bass, and drum that gives this recording the ambiance of an intimate piano bar. Before hearing this disc, I knew only Gershwin's biggest hits, so many of the numbers here were new to me and increase my appreciation of that great American composer.
Disappointed.......2003-04-10
I bought this cd because I am a huge Gershwin enthusiast and am always on the lookout for versions of one of my favorite pieces, "Liza". I'd heard a lot of buzz about Feinstein and the supposed wonderfulness of his Gershwin interpretations, so I thought I would give this album a shot.
I was extremely disappointed. Feinstein seems to suck the life out of Gershwin's compositions, a feat I would have previously thought impossible. Though I concede that vocalists are free to reinterpret songs (many to a great success, as in Louis Armstrong's and Ella Fitzgerals's enjoyable versions of Gershwin), I think Feinstein's lazy tempos "loungy" voice make the tracks on this album boring and annoying.
I have loved to listen to and sing these songs my entire life. I just wanted to warn listeners who perhaps, like myself, enjoy George Gershwin's music for its beautiful clarity and energy (as easily experienced through Gershwin's own recordings, early interpretations by artists such as the Astaires, and even recent broadway "Crazy For You") that they will not experience any feeling of the sort from Michael Feinstein.
Amidst all the gushing that has recently been done over him, I found Michael Feinstein to have attempted to murder "Liza" and the other songs on this album. He merely displays a very unexceptional voice and poor interpretive taste. Fans beware, Feinstein proves that it is possible to make a bad cd of Gershwin songs. I'd recommend listening elsewhere.
they can't take that album away from me.......2002-05-09
they say the third time's a charm, but in this instance, it is the first time -- michael feinstein's first gershwin album -- that is the charm. this album is by far better and more listenable than the next two -- "feinstein sings gershwin" and "nice work if you can get it".
the listenability of this album may stem from the fact that it is a bare-bones arrangement, with two pianos, a bass and drums, a la a jazz trio, with no embellishment, so michael feinstein's then sincere and unsophisticated voice is the featured instrument.
i heartily recommend this album, as every song on it is a gem and feinstein's voice is more appealing than on the two later albums, when he jazzed it up with what sounds like an echo chamber and other electronic enhancements and he seems to be doing the songs by the numbers.
feinstein's version of "liza," slowed down to ballad form and plaintively phrased, is the best i have ever heard. the duet with rosemary clooney on "isn't it a pity," again brings out the best of feinstein's then-new voice and shows why george's (clooney) aunt is rightfully considered a jazz legend.
the combined "he loves and she loves/how long has this been going on" is another melodic/poignant highlight, while the album's finale, "someone to watch over me," is a stirring anthem to wanting and needing someone and is done with vocal and instrumental passion; it brings this collection of songs to a fitting crescendo.
for a lawyer's kid from columbus, ohio who started out cataloguing gershwin estate material for the reclusive ira and then began singing the songs for family and friends, michael feinstein has done all right for himself. he has become the recognized interpreter of the gershwin legacy, sort of the same way his pseudo-cousin, john, jr. feinstein, has become the recognized interpreter of the bob knight legacy... .
michael feinstein may have hit a home run his first time up with this album, and it may be his best, as it is the purest and most joyful celebration of gershwin tunes, while the others are fancier, more jazzed up and ponderous and less appealing.
the other albums are certainly not bad, though, and i recommend buying them to fill out a feinstein or gershwin collection, but this one is by far the best one to get if you are only going to get one as a sample of either's work. it is nice work, and you can get it.

A master of American popular song, Michael Feinstein turns to children's music for Pure Imagination and the result should please children and adults alike. The album includes story songs ("Ferdinand the Bull") and "message" songs ("Aren't You Glad You're You"), as well as favorites from films, such as the title track (from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) and a medley from Disney's Alice in Wonderland. This album is about what you'd expect from Feinstein, including irrepressible cheer, pleasant singing (if a little strained toward the top of his range), a guest appearance from Rosemary Clooney, and impeccable song selection. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Our favorite children's CD.......2004-10-20
Michael Feinstein captures the perfect balance of whimsy, fun, and songs that teach. He has a beautifully trained voice and he is backed up with wonderful arrangements and musicians. My 2 year old daughter and I listen to it over and over and never get tired of it.
Gorgeous Children's Music For Us Grown Up Kids........2004-04-29
I have to confess to shedding a few tears over this album, especially with the title and opening song Pure Imagination. As I grow older I find it harder and harder to feel the pluck of heartstrings, but Michael Feinstein does it with his rendition of the Anthony Newley classic. He takes me back to an innocent time with his infectious joy in this music. You can hear the smile on his face, hear the love he feels for the melody and lyrics. Most of the songs are happy and silly, but curiously there is one that every parent should listen to and take to heart. If you have heard this album, you'll know the song: Because We're Kids, from that amazing and surrealist movie The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T (From which the crazy Dressing Song also came.) This album is a true gem for all ages.
A Hot Fudge Sundae for the Senses.......2003-03-14
What a charming and magical interpretation of song. I have never heard such wonderful and unique stylings. My favorites are "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" and "The Mole People." Anyone who is young or "young at heart" will adore this collection.
Perfect for "kids" of all ages!.......2001-11-10
My kids and I discovered this CD a few years ago and loved it. The songs are great, my kids were amazed that I knew the words to lots of these "new" songs and they loved the silliness of many of them. Best of all, it is a CD that kids can listen to over and over and over again without driving their parents nut!
PURE IMAGINATION is pure satisfaction!.......2001-07-14
These whimsical songs are perfectly performed by this most-gifted artist. He plays with the words of the stories in a magical way and creates a delight for the ears and senses. I especially like his rendition of FERDINAND THE BULL. It brings to life the bullfight and this humble animal with his tale of woe. The other songs are a joy, also, to hear over and over again. More power to Michael Feinstein and his creative ability not only in writing music but in interpreting other's stories in songs. He is a marvel.

Joe has been a good discovery, for me.......2001-02-13
Joe has been one of the more surprising finds in a long time.He reminds me of Frank Sinatra and Matt Monro. I would say that he sounds half Frank and Half Matt. By the way he is from England. That might explanin why he sounds like Matt Monro.
The first time I heard Joes' voice I was imrpessed. I knew he would be a voice that I would love to hear over and over agian. He has a great delivery with his song. His phrasing is excellent.
I think that anybody that loves great love songs should let Joe sing them to you.

Perhaps the best oldies compilation.......2001-01-15
As opposite of Austrian "Document" label that offers "collected work" of ancient artists - frankly, interesting but a bit much - British ASV is specialised in compilation of 1920 and 1930's music in a much "digestible" way. This wonderful compilation, with 79 minutes of music is a great introduction to a long gone names whose music still sparkle after decades.I had already used opportunity to hear Al Jolson,Eddie Cantor,Annette Hanshaw and Ruth Etting on their ASV albums, but there were other names I wanted to check and this compilation was a easy way to hear music before I order complete albums of somebody. What we have here is really fun music, even at the moments when ballads were supposed to be sad (Al Jolson chest-beating in the meantime became unintentionally funny).CD opens with young and awful-voiced Marlene Dietrich singing her signature song "Falling In Love Again" which sounds much much different than her later versions (later she honed it to a perfection, here she was just a young german woman who was falling in and out of pitch),and what follows is really glowing with humour.Maybe some listeners will recognise Cab Calloway's "Minnie The Moocher" from "Blues Brothers" movie.I loved great Paul Robeson and Fred Astaire, but lovely, happy "Louise" by Maurice Chevalier, brethtaking vocal acrobatics by The Mills Brothers,Ink Spots and wonderful "Leaning On A Lamp Post" by George Formby are highlits for me.And yes,West Indian singer-pianist Hutch sound like Nina Simone grandfather, same dead serious, wobbly voice!
Good old-fashioned songs by the original artists.......1999-03-01
If you are into classic old songs, by the people that made them famous, this is the album for you. It's a load of all the great singers, who sang these great melodies, if your in the mood for Dietrich, Astaire, Maurice Chevalier, Glenn Miller, this is definetly the best I've heard from all of them.
