Over the past few years, Ann Hampton Callaway has evolved from a top cabaret singer (e.g., Sibling Revelry, her brilliant collaboration with sister Liz Callaway) into an ever-improving jazz one. As she got over her eager-puppylike tendency to overdo it (her scatting was often just too much), this wonderful album shows she's finally learned that simplicity is the hardest trick to master, but also the most rewarding. Backed by the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Baron, Frank Wess, and Lewis Nash, Callaway goes over a series of standards associated with Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, and, of course, Ella Fitzgerald (Callaway once made an album titled To Ella with Love). Despite such a tricky endeavor, Callaway puts her stamp on these songs. A newfound velvety smoothness and casual sense of ease to her voice are both enchanting. Not only is Signature Callaway's finest achievement yet, it's also one of the year's best jazz vocal records. --Elisabeth Vincentelli --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Like Nickel Creek and the Duhks (and Alison Krauss and Union Station before them), Crooked Still employ bluegrass elements as a springboard for an eclectic, expansive dynamic. Behind the sweetly ethereal and occasionally jazzy vocals of Aoife O' Donovan, the interplay of Gregory Liszt's banjo, Rushad Eggleston's cello (both bowed and flatpicked), and Corey DiMario's double bass gives the young New England band a sound that is closer to chamber-grass than hoedown. Though none of the material on this label debut is original, the transformations typically are, with the murder balladry of "Little Sadie" given a surprisingly sprightly reading, Bob Dylan's early "Oxford Town" taken at double-time speed, and Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" sounding more meditative than bluesy. The band and veteran producer Lee Townsend enlist a number of guests for harmony and instrumental support, but it's plain that the drummerless quartet has the talent and musical vision to deliver on this album's considerable promise. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful.......2007-05-14

my wife and i heard aoife o'donovan a couple of times when she was one of the singers with wayfaring strangers. when we were perusing the concert schedule at the somerville theatre my wife recognized her name as the vocalist for the band crooked still. we decided to give it a try but we weren't sure what to expect. within the first 10 seconds of the concert i was in love with the group. we travelled over to vermont later that month to hear them again and then travelled down to club passim in cambridge a couple of months later for a tuesday 10 o'clock at night concert to try out new material. we're going to see them again in july. i've bought four copies of each of their cd's, one copy for us and the others for friends. i am thinking of rewriting my will and leaving everything to aoife if she will sing at my funeral.

i really like wayfaring strangers and have lent my wayfaring strangers cd's to friends and relatives. hardly anyone cares for them as much as i do and i understand that it can take some getting used to. crooked still is not like that. it is so accessible that i think just about anyone would like it and some people will love it.

Great CD, I bought it after hearing then in concert!!

4 out of 5 stars Solid follow-up to "Hop High", but with a muted edge.......2007-05-10

So, what do you get when you combine a lead singer with an airy, sultry, velvety smooth voice, a rocking double bass, a banjo player that actually earned his Ph.D. from MIT, and a cellist that's totally bonkers? You get Crooked Still, a band who's unique style of bluegrass music is turning heads wherever they play. I had the fortune of stumbling across these guys at Merlefest and I was hooked from the first song. Their style of music is generally referred to as "Alternative Bluegrass"; basically, they take a traditional song, break it down, and then add their own unique rhythm and melody. These guys take a _very_ creative approach to bluegrass/American folk music (for example, flat-picking a cello), and if your listening habits tend towards the more traditional approach, this may not be the band for you. As good as they are, I'm hoping at some point they will start creating some original material. Also, as many have noted, their second album "Shaken by a low sound" lacks the freshness and edge of both their first album and the live performances of the songs on the album--though that may reflect the influence of the label rather than a conscious decision by the band. Bottom line: if you can only purchase one Crooked Still album, get the first one, "Hop High". If you get a chance to see this band live, do so. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Madman of the Cello!.......2007-02-27

This record is fine...wonderful, in fact. The band (a cello-bass-banjo power trio!) combines a profound understanding of the "trad" repertoire with hot chops and a hot chick singer with a breathy-but-tasteful delivery. BUT GO SEE THIS BAND LIVE!! I have just returned from Wintergrass and feel safe in saying that I have seen the future (of something or other) and his name is Rushad Eggleston, virtuoso madman. Rushad is evolving into a major force and, in addition his magical cello, he has--for lack of a better word--a schtick you have to see to believe. He is the Jimi-Django of this fabulous aggregation. GO SEE HIM BEFORE HE EXPLODES. Holy, holy bejesus!

5 out of 5 stars Love at first sight.......2007-02-06

I love this band and this CD does them great credit. My favorite cut is Come on in my kitchen, a song I knew 40 years ago but they do it here with depth and feeling.

It's hard to tell where the traditional ends and the original begins in the music of Eilen Jewell, a sweet-voiced young singer who steeps her material in the hard times of old, reviving the stories and musical styles of the Depression. On her own "Rich Man's World," she casts herself as a "lonely rambler girl" while conjuring comparisons with Gillian Welch. Another original, "In the End," sounds uncannily like Lucinda Williams, while a revival of Eric Andersen's train-hopping "Dusty Boxcar Wall" and the double-entendre blues of the traditional "If You Catch Me Stealing" reinforce the sense of Jewell as a musical throwback to a time before she was born. Yet there are timeless pleasures here as well: a bittersweet reading of Charlie Rich's "Thanks a Lot," an understated, harmony-laden rendition of Bob Dylan's "Walking Down the Line," the sultry cantina twang of her original "Too Hot to Sleep." When the musical arrangements aren't generic Hot Club and the songs seem more like role-playing, Jewell sounds like a singer with enough promise to develop her own identity. --Don McLeese

This album's title cut finds the veteran folk-blues troubadour, now in his early 60s, pondering the possibility of living to be 100, thus setting the thematic tone for an uncommonly reflective, meditative set. The ragtime Zen of "Open Up," the philosophical "Seems So Real," and the rock-bottom despair in his cover of Peter Case's "Cold Trail Blues" all suggest that the virtuosic fingerpicker and evocatively smoky vocalist has reached a point in his life where he's pondering the biggest issues of mortality, a perspective that informs the complex relationship in "Father's Day." Not all of the material is that introspective, as the uptempo, electric rock of "Diplomacy" is as sardonic as Randy Newman, while "Origin of the Species" encapsulates Adam and Eve, Charles Darwin, and intelligent design. Smither also pays homage to two seminal influences, transforming Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" into an acoustic, accordion-laced waltz and reviving Lightnin' Hopkins's version of the traditional "Blues in the Bottle." Ollabelle provide harmonies on two cuts, with mandolinist Tim O' Brien also offering instrumental and vocal support. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Lovely as Chris Smither always is..........2007-06-08

We were so pleased to get Chris' latest and as we had hoped the cd is Terrific. He's a great guitarist and somehow his lyrics tells stories that allow us in to know more about him...a great story teller. This is our 7th Chris Smither cd...he's incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Smither is the best.......2007-05-15

Chris Smither is the kind of singer/songwriter/guitar picker that you want to go out and see whenever he comes to town. His every song sounds like music, and his lyrics give you cause to think.

5 out of 5 stars another piece by a largely unrecognized master musician,songwriter........2007-03-31

i have been a fan of chris smither`s for about 35 years since first hearing cuts on the now long gone radio station WHFS,102.3 in bethesda,md. (D.C. and vicinity listeners from long ago should recall the station affectionately, also.) smither`s guitar playing is a unique and distinctive blend of folk, blues, and country that can only be described as superlative. his songwriting and way with words are unmatched, and comparable to Dylan, in my opinion. my favorite albums are "don`t it drag on","up on the lowdown", and now this most recent offering to those who can appreciate his talents,"leave the light on".

5 out of 5 stars Leave the light on.......2007-02-24

I couldn't think of a better title for my review, listen to the the song and I think you will agree. Chris Smither gets better with every cd that he makes. He has a sound of his own and sees and hears life through a very unique perspective. There is not a cut on this cd that I don't like. Try it you want be disapointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-13

Chris Smither is a guitarists' guitarist. Even when his discs include orchestration they are incredible. If you've been to a solo concert, you're better off buying his two solo "live" discs in a small studio, because it's what you've heard, but if you like all Chris does, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Thirtysomething Boston folkie McKenna often comes off like another Dar Williams acolyte, but sometimes she's a bit more. Her waifish voice and pretty acoustic arrangements can give way to a snarling wit. "I heard about Adam and Eve," she sings on the skeptical, newgrass-styled "God Will Thank You," "but I still believe she never got a fair trial." Her coffeehouse jottings can yield genuinely catchy songs like the sensual "This Fire" and the sunny, bubbly "Girl Like Me." Unfortunately, they also yield some precious poesy, or worse, songs like "Pink Sweater," a rather obvious slag of hate crimes. Vengeful preaching doesn't much become McKenna, but the simpler, more personal emotions of songs such as the solo acoustic closer "You Are Loved" play nearer to her strengths. --Roy Kasten

Lori McKenna has quickly become my favorite artist in the singer-songwriter category. All of her songs are simple and honest but never boring. Her voice will grab you and keep you wanting more. There is obvious talent when someone can sing without over production and tons of background music. My favorites from this album are 'Fireflies', 'Mars', 'Deserving Song', and 'You are Loved'. 'Never Die Young' is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard!! Richard Shindell adds vocals to this song that Lori wrote about her mother that died when she was 6 years old.

This woman to me is very very good. And only two cd's out??
Where are all the music lovers out there? I don't know if she is even out in alot of cd stores. I love her!! Maybe sort of an Alanis M but laid back and folkish. I would recommend BOTH of her
cd's. Actually maybe a better voice than Alanis. Sit back and relax and listen if you like good folk music. She may be my favorite female artist in the singer-songwwiter,folk-rock,indie music, and I have a good varied collection of them.

i was already a fan of lori mckenna when i saw her on oprah with faith hill. personally, i think lori's version (the original) of the song 'fireflies' is waaaay better than faith's rendition. i also like lori's voice better - sorry to any faith fans! mckenna's voice has a folksy, fluttering sound that draws you in - her voice catches and your heart feels that ole pull. her songs are so breathtakingly real and down-to-earth, yet they are lyrical and poetic at the same time.

I just learned of Lori McKenna from the Oprah show with Faith Hill. I typed in her name in "keyword" and was amazed that she was so popular and had made several albums!
From reading about her, she is an amazing person and I really wanted to own all of her albums, but I can barely understand what she is saying, however, I still plan to buy at least one just because I can relate to her depth, her sincerity, her
    honesty, her perception of life.
I regret saying this, but I hope someone down the line continues to make her songs (like Faith Hill did) so that we can fully understand and appreciate them. Lori is a wonderful person, so
this, in no way, is meant to be offensive.
I just can't make out much of what she is saying.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2004-05-01

I love the music on this CD. I find myself playing it over and over. If I have my MP3 player on random, I always stop to listen (and sing) whenever one of these songs comes on. I first heard her on NPR, and I have loved every song from her I've heard. Her voice takes some getting used to, but the songs grow on you the more you hear them. Paper Wings and Halo and Would you Love Me Then are two of my favorites.

2006 studio album from 'the first lady of Celtic music' Moya (Maire) Brennan, best known as the vocalist with Clannad (and for being Enya's sister!). 12 tracks including 'Hear My Prayer', 'No One Talks', 'Tapestry' and 'Purple Haze'. Furious.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Contemplative Celebration.......2007-02-20

Of her solo CD's, this is perhaps Moya's most fluid and uplifting. It has the same contemplative feel as Two Horizons and Whisper to the Wild Waters, yet there is a deeper sense of 'flow' in this ensemble of tunes; a spiritul 'movement' enlivens the CD from beginning to end. The sound occasionally reminds me of Clannad's in their most mature phase (Sirius - Legend). There is a sense of joy in this music that is reminiscent of Perfect Time. An excellent album; I play it every day.

    4 out of 5 stars Moya.......2007-01-09

This is my 7th CD from Moya (Maire). Her voice continues beautiful like when she was leader vocal from CLANNAD.

5 out of 5 stars another beautiful entry in Moya's lineup.......2006-11-28

I was very excited to see a new album by Moya Brennan and this one definitely did not disappoint! Very beautiful songs and quite a few catchy numbers... I highly recommend this album. Equally as excellent as her other solo albums!!

5 out of 5 stars Sublime! The First Lady of Celtic Music will inspire you..........2006-11-02

I had shivers down my spine right from the first song on this CD. After the dreamy new age voyage of "Two Horizons," "Signature" takes us back to Moya's Irish roots. The songs are dreamy and ethereal, heavily featuring traditional Irish instruments (including Moya's own harp playing). All of the songs are a bit haunting and utterly beautiful. Moya's voice is better than ever, and the lyrics are thoughtful, enchanting, and inspirational. At times, her voice is the softest feather- and then at other times, it hits home like an arrow hitting a bullseye. There is still quite a bit of Christian influence; yet the Christian songs are universal in their message and will not leave idividuals of other denominations feeling alienated. All in all, I would say that this is one of Moya's best albums to date- it combines the best Irish influences from her Clannad albums, mixes in some of the best from her more Christian albums ("Whisper to the Wild Water" and "Perfect Time"), and keeps you floating in the dream world that Moya has created on every album she has ever done. Moya has a truly unique way of lifting you up when you are sad, and lifting you higher when you are happy. If you love this album, do your family and friends a favor and intruduce them to it as well. I have played "Signature" for people who have very diverse musical tastes- and everyone so far has been captivated by it!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Inspiring, Real, Great arrangements.......2006-10-30

I love this album. The fantastic blend of instruments with Moya's "voice of clannad" vocal style makes this a must have. Great Irish trad instruments as well as acoustic guitar, string and piano arrangements. Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic new folk musical mix that is superior, impressive & attractive.......2007-07-15

Playing Time - 46:41 -- "Daisy" has a slang definition of "something excellent or notable." And in the boxing ring of yesteryear, "mayhem" used to informally refer to a knockout. Hence, this band's moniker is appropriate for their eclectic musical mix that is superior, impressive and attractive. A real daisy knockout! Contemporary folk is able to cast aside genre-specific boundaries in favor of band individualism. While other groups have established the archetype, Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem follow their own muse. Inspiring spirits guide them into old-time, folk, blues, swing, cajun and pop idioms. Imparting their own unique and contemporaneous stamp on material keeps them from sounding anachronistic. Just look at how they incoporate lyrics from Amazing Grace into the spirited vocal groove of "Oil in my Vessel." Their innovative rearrangement of Leonard Cohen's "Heart with No Companion" transforms it into a powerful old-time mountain ballad, and a traditional "Red Haired Boy" is given a very contemporary interpretation. With resonator guitar kicking it off, Bob Dylan's "Farewell Angelina" is given a charged-up, engaging bluesy treatment. The set opens a cappella with "Joy Comes Back," a song (learned from Scott Staples) that has special meaning for Rani because she's fought and won a battle with cancer diagnosed shortly after she gave birth.

Various band members have a knack for crafting songs of their own. Rani Arbo (fiddle, guitar) penned the title track, "Big Old Life" that welcomes and invites listeners to step right in, rise and shine, take a ride, and connect with their music. That interaction without intimidation is one of the band's charismatic strengths. Anand Hayuk (guitar, mandolin, piano) wrote "What's That," a slower swinging tune with plenty of emotional and intellectual energy. Andrew Kinsey (bass, banjo) wrote the personal and reflective "Mother of Our Dreams." The fourth band member, Scott Kessel, plays a wide variety of common and unusual percussion instruments. Guests Kevin Barry (lap steel) and Deb Pasternak (backing vocals) provide some tasty flavorings to the overall set that ends with Daisy May Erlewine's optimistic message of perseverance and reliance, "Shine On." Four years coming since their last CD, "Big Old Life" is a well-wrought entry in the new folk field. The band's musical maturity has allowed these alchemists to take roots music stylings and magically transform them into present-day gold. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars best album of 2007 so far.......2007-06-16

I own every previous release by both Salamander Crossing and Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem, and have enjoyed and been touched by all of them. Big Old Life would be my favorite thus far. Guitar, bass , percussion, fiddle, lap steel, banjo, voice, and superior production make this a standout.
I find myself listening to each player on each song. Then another listening for the lyrics.
The guest players are top notch , and the lap steel guitar, banjo, harmonica and accordian parts are great.
This summer, I will be catching this band on tour and I look forward to hearing live versions of these songs.
    What a great album!

Another home run for this excellent, eclectic group. If you enjoyed *Gambling Eden* you 'll love this new one. Nothing compares to hearing them live, of course, but until they put out a live record, this will do very nicely.

    5 out of 5 stars signature sound - DVD.......2007-06-27

I enjoyed this DVD more than the Get Away Joedan DVD- the Guys are really enjoyable to watch and so full of energy. Their guest appearance artists are well worth listening to. Could watch this one over and over!! Well worth having in your library. Can find nothing wrong with this, except wish it were longer and wish more similar to it were available from Ernie & his Group.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best !!.......2007-05-13

I just love this CD!! It is absolutely one of the best recordings that
this group has put out. All the songs have beautiful meanings. Pay close
attention to the words of "Then Came The Morning"...Wow! How powerful!! It gives me goose bumps each time I hear it. "Forgiven Again" is another
one, and don't forget "Do You Want To Be Forgiven", and "Pray for Me". You
definitely won't go wrong adding this CD to your music library. Ernie Haase and Signature Sound are totally AWESOME!!

I bought this CD after seeing them at a Gaither Homecoming concert, and I absolutely love it! I have it playing all the time in my car and on my iPod! My favorites are "Forgiven Again", "Godspeed", and "This Old Place". This is one of those CD's you could have on all day. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest CD I have ever purchased.......2006-12-06

I listen to this every day for a celebration of the future events for the Christian. It is very uplifting and contemporary and my favorite is Trying to Get a Glimpse.

Very disappointing. Not at all consistent with the usual quality of SSQ. There is only one song that somewhat redeems the album "Forgiven Again".
Ernie and SSQ, please regroup your songs for future recording.
I would be skeptical of buying another SSQ album
