What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father," which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. This is a collection as breathtakingly beautiful as the Cathedral of the Dormition itself. Not to be missed. --Karen K. Hugg

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely FANTASTIC CD !!.......2007-06-28

I'll keep this short: I'm not new to chant or choral music but there are SO MANY options out here that it's hard to know which ones are worth buying. I've got a few titles in my budding collection but I have to say that this particular recording is FANTASTIC. It is at once awe inspiring, meditative, and peaceful. Simply wonderful...

5 out of 5 stars Sacred and a treasure!.......2007-06-11

Wow! This is as good as the first Sacred Treasures if not better. These holy and divine works are truly "the speech of angels".

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2006-12-28

I've really become taken with Russian choral music as of late. I've tried to get my hands on every recording I can, and amongst them all this is one of the very best. The phrasing, tonality and selection is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars More Divine Beauty and Peace!.......2006-12-03

I am the producer of this CD and also of the first CD in the Sacred Treasures series called "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks From Russia" as well as of "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.

In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the text to a Russian "Cherubic Hymn" prescribes) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these compilations, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES III"...

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get any Better!!!.......2006-10-09

Having collected a decent library of sacred music over the years I can readily attest that this is the best sacred music CD that I own, my second favorite being a requiem chant by the monks of Solesmes. Further, upon listening to this CD everyone I know seems to respond to it with the same enthusiasm. Track 10 is my personal favorite, but there are no weak pieces here. The entire production hangs together well. Can't recommend it enough to novice or seasoned liturgical music listener.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

The modern-day traditional Jewish music revival is filled with artists exploring klezmer's Eastern-European roots, but you'll hear no clarinet and little violin on cantor/educator Richard Kaplan's Life Of The Worlds. Although these are traditional songs, there is a broad range of the Diaspora represented on his second album, including Afghani, Spanish, Moroccan, and Algerian traditions. Kaplan dives into the sacred and the secular, the prophetic and the exultant, finding commonalities amongst different tribes and fusing them together. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of an occasional flute, piano, and violin as well as Moroccan clay drums, oud, dumbek, and other pre-modern-era instruments, but the instrument at the center of each song is Kaplan's voice--his high baritone majestically soars, quavers with sensitivity, and rings out with joy. To hear him sing solo versions of traditional Niggiun is to hear a world-class master savor the multifaceted nuance of each note and transcend the concept of song, turning it into religion and high art. --Tad Hendrickson

    Album Description

A remarkable collection of vocal performances of Jewish sacred music from the Middle East, Andalusia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia - songs of exultation, longing, love, and Divine immanence - accompanied by an ensemble of masterful musicians.

Instruments include: oud, ney, kanun, Egyptian accordian, violin, mandolin, dumbek, doira, riqq, Yemenite can, tar, saz, clarinet, mey (Turkish duduk), tilinca (Rumanian shepherd's flute), piano, string bass, balaban (Klezmer drum set), cimbalom, and a chorus of voices.

Among many special songs, the CD features an 'eco-lament' (ecological lament) based on lament melodies for the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It is called "Lament on the Destruction of the Garden of Eden" (Kinah Lekhurban Gan Eden), and updates the use of these tunes to mourn the wounding of our larger temple, Gaia - Mother Earth.

LIFE OF THE WORLDS contains 18 songs, 77 minutes of music, and contains a 32-page booklet which includes informative song descriptions; all texts are provided in transliteration, English translation, and in Hebrew or Yiddish.

This CD was three years in the making, and presents the first recordings in North America of several songs from the treasure-chest of Jewish sacred music.

    1. Martin Pearlman Discusses Music Of The Moravians

    Amazon.com

When the subject of 18th-century music comes up, the United States is rarely considered any sort of creative artistic bastion. But this collection of Moravian religious music reveals how deep a fallacy it is to write off the U.S. as unimportant in vocal music history. The Moravian Church, founded on the cusp of the 14th and 15th centuries, would generate a distinctly musical worship tradition in the 1700s, just prior to the first Moravians settling in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Once in Pennsylvania, the music flowed at a brisk pace, comprising significant sections of worship ceremonies. Composers included in this collection reflect two particular facets of the music: its harmonic simplicity and its abiding spiritual values. Of course, "simplicity" is an easily derogatory descriptive, but that is not at all the case here. These choral works display tremendous richness and depth, with traces of J.S. Bach's cantatas as well as works by Haydn and even Mozart, who developed on a parallel musical track to the Moravians. And there are pop smarts here, too: One of the songs even quotes the Star Spangled Banner, then a ditty for the masses. The period instruments create a fine chamber background--music that floats without weighting the vocals or tearing ears away. A second bonus CD contains an extended discussion with Martin Pearlman, whose discussion of the music is more than enlightening. --Andrew Bartlett

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted, captures the spirit.......2000-07-31

This recording truly seems to capture the spirit of the music. As someone who grew up singing in the Moravian church, this cd is a FIND. I listened with joy and surprise to this collection. The execution is tender, passionate, thoughtful. The balance between vocals and chamber orchestra is lovely, as close to perfect as one might imagine. I know many of the works on this cd as hymns and choral anthems, albeit in English. The uplifting musicality as an important part of worship was and continues to be part of the life of the Moravian church. The Moravian tradition embodies folk music in an authentic fashion, where the music of the church is truly the music of the people. Singing is a part of all activities within the church, providing a fabric through which fellowship and goodwill can flow. Somehow, the spirit of the context is captured here. The commentary by Martin Pearlman is quite informative and respectful. For individuals for whom music in the church has been more than an interlude in worship, for other Moravians out there who are far from the fold and can still hear the echoes, for those who are curious and want to listen to something slightly, pleasantly, off the beaten path, you will not be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful!.......1999-07-30

This is very pretty music. It reminds me in some ways of Handel's Messiah, but it has a sound all its own. The voices and instruments are supurb. I really enjoyed the accompanying insert in the CD, which gives a small biography of all the composers. There are complete lyrics in English and German as well. I would love to get the sheet music and perform it!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music played with clarity and feeling.......1999-03-24

Martin Pearlman has done a great service through his research in the Moravian archives in North Carolina. His discoveries bring to us music of great beauty and seeming simplicity that masks subtle complexity. The quality of the orchestra and the soloists is outstanding

4 out of 5 stars This traditional Moravian music lives today!.......1998-12-07

I just heard the Christmas section on PBS radio. "Lost music"? As one raised in the Moravian tradition, I can sing along with some of these chorales in English. Why? Because songs such as "Thou Child Divine" are sung every year at Christmas even today. I am ordering to see whether translations are provided. Also, to compare with other current reworkings of the classical Moravian composers. As a footnote, the Moravian Music Foundation publishes newly found works from the archives every two or three years. Thus many works are not lost, but newly mined.

It was so spooky how much this guy sounds like Jim Morrison on most of the songs. Either way, it's a great CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Identity!.......2007-01-08

I don't wish to get into a big arguement about this, but the Phantom was a local rocker from Oxford, MI named Ted Pearson Jr. I went to school with his brothers and sister and knew Ted his whole life. Most everyone from my generation who lived in Oxford has a copy of the Capitol 45 of "Calm Before the Storm." I saw him perform several times at local venues.
Ted was quite a character. He often wore a full size sword at his waist in public and, though often stopped and questioned, it was legal (at least at that time in history) since the weapon was not concealed.
Officially, Ted died in a drug-related incident. However, there is much speculation to this day that he is alive and well and living under a Witness Protection program. I like to think that's what really happened.

4 out of 5 stars The Singer Was Not Iggy Pop........2006-05-15

    It was Tom Carson...

"Two distinct schools of thought existed about `70s rock outfit, Phantom. The first tended towards the view that Phantom was cynically signed by Capitol to exploit the recent death of Jim Morrison, whose vocal style Phantom singer Tom Carson copied convincingly. The second is that they were a pretty decent group whose vocalist just happened to sound more than a bit like Morrison.

Whichever of these two scenarios was closest to the truth we will never know, but such was Elektra's concern that the record buying public would be confused into thinking that Morrison was still alive that the record company attempted to obtain an injunction banning Capitol from releasing the band's first album, Divine Comedy. Predictably, Elektra's actions simply increased the publicity the band was attracting, and Capitol duly took full advantage.

In hindsight it's difficult to see what all the fuss was about, as Carson's vocals were only reminiscent of Morrison's at the end of his brief career. In the end, the one thing that is clear is that Divine Comedy is actually a pretty decent album. A consistently high musical and compositional standard is maintained throughout, with many critics acclaiming the mystical sound that was the album's hallmark. Two melodramatic tracks, Tales From A Wizard and Welcome To Hell, stand out particularly strongly, but the entire album is interesting, innovative, and extremely enjoyable."

5 out of 5 stars It's Iggy Pop on vocals........2006-02-07

This album was released to perpetuate the rumors that Jim Morrison had staged his own death. Radio interviews, telephone conversations, and personal bank transactions were all executed well AFTER Morrison died. Some conspiracy theorists claim it was really him - no one knows, as of course, few records or notable evidence exists.

However, evidence DOES exist for this album. When it came out, they tried to make people think it was Jim, but soon afterwards Iggy Pop came forward and admitted that he had purposely imitated his good pal Morrison on the album to help create the legacy.

I'm not sure who the other musicians are, but it's not Jim on vocals, and the whole "mystery" surrounding this album can be explained a bit further on this website:

5 out of 5 stars My guess at who recorded this..........2006-01-30

Great CD. I believe it was recored by the Michigan band SRC although with a different lead vocals instead of Scott Richards. The guitar work is either Quackenbush or a copycat artist. Listen to "The Angel Song" from SRC Milestones CD and you will see what I mean about being SRC. They recorded for Capitol records about the same time period as this release.

        5 out of 5 stars Glorious Sequel.......2007-05-03

For those who enjoyed Goldstone and Clemmow's first Volume Schubert: The Unauthorised Piano Duets, this sequel will come as a blessing. It's somewhat difficult to stumble upon the Divine Art label's two Schubert volumes, and I regret the fact that many Schubert lovers out there are ignorant of these two mesmerizing and invaluable recordings. Both contain a plethora of four-hand piano arrangements, most of which are of Schubert's beloved chamber music. In the first Volume, our ears were rewarded with the immaculate piano arrangement of the Trout Quintet. Here we get a similar treasure trove of Schubert's loveliest chamber music, translated into the piano's language by way of complex and exquisite arrangements.

"I count the hours I spent playing duets with Schubert among the most enjoyable of my life, and I cannot think back on that period without being overcome by the most profound emotion... My friendship with Schubert remained untroubled until his death." These are the words of Josef von Gahy, a friend of Schubert's who had the illustrious position of being Schubert's favorite piano duet partner. Gahy completed a vast number of four-hand transcriptions of Schubert's works. And these are not deficient piano reductions so often published by sixth-rate musicians and incompetent hacks. Anthony Goldstone mentions in the liner notes that Gahy "transcribed about thirty of Schubert's works" and that his "transcriptions are faithful to the originals... This leads to some extremely complicated writing in both the Notturno and the B flat major Trio, with parts of phrases flying back and forth between the two players." According to Goldstone, Gahy worked on the piano arrangement of the B flat major Trio for eight months. But one doesn't need historical facts to feel impressed; just listen to the highly effective piano arrangement of the Trio and bask in its brilliance, precision and craftsmanship.

In truth, and I know this is a dubious thing to say, I actually enjoyed the piano arrangement of the D. 898 Trio much more than its original version. Goldstone's and Clemmow's adoration and reverence for Schubert's music are such that they make no room for technical error or interpretative shortcomings. On the contrary, they imbue this work with a new breath of musical air while maintaining all the dynamism and intricacies of a well-coordinated chamber ensemble (and one can argue that they *are* a chamber duo, after all). Schubert's Piano Trio is an emotionally balanced work that employs a light first movement, a sublime second, and then two more jovial movements. With the exception of the development section in the first movement and also the Andante, Schubert has refrained from expressing sorrow, pathos or struggle. Instead, he communicates a mood of gaiety clothed in his usual melodic wrappings. Goldstone and Clemmow are of such a caliber that technique is never questioned. And their devotion to Schubert is truly remarkable; they are real amateurs in the best sense. Thus they deliver all the goods and provide a phenomenally refreshing outlook on this chamber work through the scope of the solo piano.

It can also be expected that this duo accomplishes the same feats with the famous Notturno and the Arpeggione Sonata. Gahy's wondrous arrangement of the Notturno is impossible to dislike. Although the tempo may seem faster than what one is used to, the piano duo creates stunning waves in the virtuosic passageworks. In the corresponding lyrical sections, the duo represents Schubert's ideas with clarity while sumultaneously exhibiting passion. Moving on, I think the Arpeggione Sonata receives the best pianistic treatment from Gahy and an even more stimulating aural experience through the hands of Goldstone and Clemmow. Like the Piano Trio, this music is unabashedly light-hearted, but its endearing themes are convincing enough to realize we're hearing quality music. Although actual recordings of this original work featuring the strange arpeggione instrument exist, I definitely find the Sonata more appealing as a piano arrangement. The only "authorised" piano arrangement featured here is Schubert's own "Friendship" Rondo in D major. It's assumed that this duet was intended to be played by both Gahy and Schubert as a touching testament to their friendship. The sentiment is not lost on the husband-wife team who play with affection and heart-felt joy.

Bottom line: Schubert lovers are incredibly fortunate to have such piano arrangements recorded by a stellar piano duo like Goldstone and Clemmow. Although these are not Schubert's most titanic compositions, they have endured in the hearts of many and make for gripping piano music. Since Goldstone divulged Gahy's list of arrangements as nearing thirty, I hope to see a third volume in this exciting series!
