Customer Reviews:
Great mixture.......2007-06-13
Duke Ellington is quoted as saying that the only types of music were "good music and bad music." It would be safe to say that all recordings ever made by Mabel Mercer or Jimmy Giuffre (or Jim Hall) should be filed under "(extremely) good music." The songs are dijunct because Mercer was one of the earliest influences on jazz and Giuffre is modern, but ... so?
For those of you who come from Jim Hall and Jimmy Giuffre and are a bit surprised by Mabel Mercer, thinking "it sounds old fashioned" it is worthwhile to note that Frank Sinatra said "she taught me everything I know." Billy Holiday used to sneak out of her job as a waitress to listen to Mabel Mercer. She preformed with Django Reinhart to audiences that included Ernest Hemmingway, Gerturide Stein and the "lost generation" in Paris. She is credited with originating the "caberet" style (and barroom style like Holiday, Fitzgerald, Sinatra, Bennett and so on). She is probably the most influental vocalist in the US (and all the world influence by jazz) and it is for a reason. She is really, really good.
If you come to the record from Mabel Mercer and are shocked by the sparse and modern trio of Giuffre (sax), Hall(guitar) and Brookmeyer(trombone) you might be jarred at the lack of vocals and the complex melodies. You might want to listen to it a few times. I, personally, love all three of the insturments, but I am a guitar fan and listen to anything I can find that Jim Hall does. He has never let me down and does not here.
This is a GREAT album. It has been in my 5 CD change for more than a month. I swap out the other 4.
For those who are puzzled by the combination, it is worth it.......2001-08-01
Like some of the other reviewers, I was bit puzzled by the combination of the Giuffre 3 and Mabel Mercer on the same CD. However, I wanted to get the Giuffre, so I took the plunge and am very glad that I did. First, the Giuffre-Hall-Brookmeyer part of the CD meets the highest expectations of those who enjoy intelligent, subtle, innovative jazz. Giuffre is one of the true originals in the history of jazz, creating a marvelous blend of several jazz traditions (from show tunes to modern), folk, and 20th century classical. What more can one say about Jim Hall than he is one of the great masters of jazz guitar? The epitome of taste and control. I was not familiar with Bob Brookmeyer's valve trombone work but he never fails to play at the same high level as his fellow musicians. Once you listen to this music, you will have to reassess the need for piano, bass, and drums in a jazz group. The reeds-guitar-trombone combination works that well. As to Mabel Mercer's portion on the CD, what a pleasant surprise! Singer friends of mine had always praised Ms. Mercer, but I had not heard her before. All I can say now is that her music is very intelligent and very unique....and in combination with Jimmy Giuffre 3 ensures that you cannot go wrong in purchasing this CD. Here's an idea for when you have people over: program the CD to play a cut of the Giuffre 3, then some Mercer, back to Giuffre, and so on. Very cool.
Yet another "review" from someone who doesn't own the CD.......2001-07-15
robert-g-near-nyc wondered plaintively in his review what Mabel Mercer has to do with this product since the samples available here (only the first five tracks) do not include her. The answer is that the set consists of two wildly different CD's that were shoe-horned into the same box as an effort of will.
Mabel Mercer recorded four 12" LP's for Atlantic in the fifties, Merely Marvelous being one of them. I own the original LP on black vinyl. What can you say about it? Mabel is unique. You "get her" or you don't. If you want all of her records you need to buy this. If you don't like the Jimmy Giuffre use it as a coaster. It's a separate disk. But you might like it. And remember this is two disks for the price of one.
I specified the size of the LP's above because she also made some 10" LP's which were collected on two 12" LP's as "The Art of Mabel Mercer". This is going to be released in August by the same company that released this album. That one is also going to be "must have" if you love Mabel. I can't wait. Unfortunately it is coming out under a strange title, I forget exactly what, but it is not going to be called "The Art of..." Be warned....
I Can't Tell What Part Mabel Mercer Plays.......2001-03-06
I'm attempting to purchase every CD ever made by Mabel Mercer. I am a hair's breadth away from purchasing this CD, but am thwarted because none of the samples have Mabel Mercer's voice on it! The only user review, at the time I wrote this, commented only on the instrumental, non-Mercer aspects of the CD. I tried to research this CD on the internet and discovered that Mabel Mercer seems to have written the first song on the CD, but that was all I could find out. The picture of the CD cover does not enlarge, and I cannot see enough of it's detail to discern from the cover whether or not this is actually two records that were placed onto one CD. I would be elated if enough information about this CD were added by Amazon such that I could make an informed buying decision. I am floored by Mabel Mercer. She is the finest, most meticulous singer I have ever heard. I just wish I knew whether or not Ms. Mercer sings on this Cd.
Giuffre is wonderful, inventive, playful and haunting.......1999-10-03
Guiffre, Hall, and Brookmeyer are all wonderful. The best of cool jazz. Their music opitimizes what happens when musicians listen to each other. Chamber music that is fun, inventive and lovely.

In 1949, her stardom established, Peggy Lee and husband-guitarist Dave Barbour's Quartet recorded the last of an ongoing series of transcriptions (recordings made solely for radio airplay) for Capitol Records. Drawing from her onstage repertoire, the loose, easygoing performances that comprise Trav'lin' Light reflected her total familiarity with the material. Gently caressing the title tune--taken from her idol Billie Holiday's book, Lee gave it a light, wistful touch unlike Holiday's original. While she simply had fun with the 1920s chestnuts "Save Your Sorrow for Tomorrow" and Sophie Tucker's "I Ain't Got Nobody," on other performances much was going on beneath the surface. Consider "Oh! You Crazy Moon." A model of sensual vulnerability? Certainly. But Lee's ability to relax the rhythm as she sang remains fascinating to hear, as does her interplay with Barbour on "You're Driving Me Crazy" and the bouncy, economical "Fine and Dandy." This delightful collection provides not only an intimate glimpse at Lee in her ascendancy, it serves as overdue homage to Barbour, whose tangy, inventive solos and tasteful accompaniment ratify his status as her ultimate musical collaborator. --Rich Kienzle
Customer Reviews:
one of my favorite jazz vocal recordings - ever !.......2006-05-01
it really is a shame that all the material from these transcriptions is not readily and affordably available as this is an utterly superlative set of tunes . Lee's voice is truly amazing on these songs , maybe as a result of not having to push to be heard over the larger ensembles she was used to working with . the warmth and sweetness of her singing here is just ineffable .
" goody goody " in particular just drives me nuts ! the way she
says " you ol' rascal you " at the end is just sublime .
Great small combo jazz vocal disc.......2006-04-18
Like Sam Cooke's "Night Beat," this disc is a revelation for those used to hearing a particular singer in a big-combo setting. Here it's just Lee with a quartet. I never realized what a tremendous singer she was until I found this disc. Husband Dave Barbour throws in tons of tasty guitar licks.
stingy with the songs.......2002-11-09
I have to agree with the other reviews that the quality of this cd is exceptional and the singing of Miss Lee is stunning to say the least, and for that I give it 5 stars, but my big complaint is the number of songs on this cd.
Come on....35.26 minutes !!!!especially when in the very informative booklet that is included, they talk about 72 titles in this series of radio transcripts (which, by the way is available completely as advertised on the back page!!!!).
I always feel a little "cheated" when I buy a cd and there's anything less then at least 50 minutes of music ...but I guess that's my problem, so I guess I'll just have to go put the "repeat" button on and start all over again.
PS. It's a wonderful cd and I guess I just want more....
Quite A Gem.......2002-04-24
It is difficult to believe that material this wonderful remained unreleased for so long. This cd presents Peggy's voice in full flight backed only by Dave Barbour (her husband at the time) on guitar. With elaborate arrangements gone, the listener gets to experience Peggy Lee on an intimate level. She is a master at interpreting these songs and here you can detect the full subtlety of her art. "I Let A Song Go Out of My Heart" showcases her impeccable phrasing and delivery. In Miss Lee's hands, the song takes a deligtfully subtle turn with a deceptively light veneer that never quite masks the heartbreaking regret-filled lyric. Peggy Lee brings this deft and masterful approach to each song on this cd. She conveys the emotion in these songs with a sophistication and restraint. This makes them all the more powerful for me. Barbour's guitar accompaniement is perfect, conveying broad jazzy tones, and sometimes swinging (e.g. Goody Goody)without ever getting in the way. He proves himself a first rate guitarist here. Despite spending years in the Capital vault, this is first rate material. These songs prove that Miss Lee was an exceptionally fine jazz singer, deserving of comparison with the finest (Holliday, Sarah Vaughn, et al.) This is an absolute gem.
PRICELESS STUFF.......2001-07-02
PEGGY is really at ease in this kind of quietly sensual atmosphere. This is an ideal record to play as a prelude for lovers who want to get in the mood.Something wonderful can happen before it ends.Being a fan,i especially enjoyed the 3 MERCER tunes:TRAV'LIN LIGHT,GOODY GOODY and WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN,but everything here is done tastefully.Get it now!AMAZON is waiting for your order.Maybe it can save your love life, one never knows.

O'DAY'S TRIBUTE TO LADY DAY.......2003-01-22
Anita O'Day is the underappreciated diva. From her humble beginnings in Chicago, to her association with Gene Krupa and onwards to her great successes (such as this album and any of her others from Verve) she always gave her all. Her life took many twists and turns including a battle that she ultimately won against booze and drugs, not unlike the woman immortalized here, Billie Holiday, whom O'Day has called her inspiration. No doubt you can hear some of Lady Day in Anita's voice on all her works, but never enough to call her a copycat. Her warm and subtle approach could (agumentatively) be likened to something of a Peggy Lee, and is always swingin'. Again, all tracks are songs Billie Holiday immortalized, and this unofficial tribute to Lady Day is a flawless collection. Backed by some of the best musicians in the business, Anita O'Day makes her way through these superbly. Immortal conductors Johnny Mandel and Russ Garcia wrote the charts, and on Garcia's arrangements, the great Ben Webster provides the sweet saxophone sounds. Mandel's work is stunning on the title track, as well as the swingin' I HEAR MUSIC and LOVER COME BACK TO ME. Garcia's best chart, in my opinion, is THE MOON LOOKS DOWN AND LAUGHS, with a sweet solo by the aformentioned Ben Webster on sax. While GOD BLESS THE CHILD will always remain Billie's alone (with Tony Bennett's versions a close second) Anita does a great job with this staple of Billie Holiday's repertoire. Other tracks of note are SOME OTHER SPRING a great song that has been recorded by many, and the swing treatment of the Irving Berlin penned REMEMBER. This was a comeback album of sorts for Anita, but her voice had only ripened and never sounds strained or labored at any juncture on this wonderful collection. A fitting tribute to one of music's greatest figures, by a wrongly underappreciated lady of song, Anita O'Day.
The best jazz singer around..........2000-09-23
Anita O'Day has always been one of the BEST and most respected(especially by other jazz singers and musicians) of the 40's, 50's and today. Since O'Day was so influenced in the 40's & 50's by Billie Holiday, it was only natular that she would record an entire album as a tribute to her idol. This CD re-issues the original LP "Trav'lin' Light" with original liner notes and cover art. This may very well be the difinitive O'Day Verve CD/LP re-issue, and of course it has been out of print in the US since it's original release, thankfully the Japanese know good music when thay see it, and we can get this essential set from Verve Japan, at a reasonably fair price, it's worth every red cent. Recommeded to everyone.
Also if you get the chance you can see Anita O'Day(81 years old) sing at The Club Atlas in Los Angeles, California. She can still thrill an audience, she's still got it at 81. She performs almsot every week, also they are making a movie about her life, hopefully soon.
An absolute MUST BUY..........2000-03-02
Simply one of Anita O'Day's finest recordings, though all of her Verve re-issue's are worth picking up. This one has original cover art work and liner notes well worth the price.
