5 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-02-17

In my opinion this is the most solid disc of Lieder I have heard. The music and the performance are great. I would definitely go for this if your new to Lieder and want to get your feet wet. And maybe next you'll want to try Brahms' Deutche Volkslieder, which I think takes a little more effort to get into, but is great none the less.

5 out of 5 stars Epitome of Lieder singing.......2006-07-26

It really amazed me to learn from the booklet that Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was never totally confident in taking on the songs of Schubert, mostly due to the fact that a lot of them are simply based on poems with a man being the character. With her wonderful tone, fastidious attention to detail and the true German spirit, she would have been able to perform them much more extensively. Whatever the case, the 24 songs featured on this disc are a true delight from start to finish. The CD starts with the joyful atmosphere of the songs "Die Vogel" and "Liebhaber in allen Gestalten " which obviously were recorded very early on in Schwarzkopf's career, showcasing her in carefree, simple and amazingly fresh mood. Then comes the core of the CD-the classic recital with Edwin Fischer at the piano. Nothing really needs to be said here. Schwarzkopf shines throughout with beautiful tone, flawless diction. She may be mannered, yes, but she also does justice to the poetry like I never heard from anyone before, of course with the exception of Fischer-Dieskau. Edwin Fischer plays with taste, bringing out all the demanded atmosphere: from the serenity of Im Fruhling to the intensity of Die Junge Nonne. The sound is pretty old but the balance is perfect and both Schwarzkopf and Fischer are caught in a great day. The other items on the disc are recorded later on in Schwarzkopf's career, when her tone has darkened, thinned down a bit but always radiant and the fastidiousness and artistry even more significant; and Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons are delightful pianists. The remaining songs include a high-spirited Die Forelle and Seligkeit, a wonderfully introspective Der Einsame and a moving and gorgeous An mein klavier (although she seems to miss a breath for a tiny fraction of a second at the beginning of the 2nd verse). The final "Erlkonig", one of her most favorite recordings, is a track that will knock you off your seat with its intensity. Parsons's playing is adequately intense, and Schwarzkopf's "mannerisms" which the Schwarzkopf bashers love to hate, are deadly powerful in pointing out all the 4 characters of the demanding lied. Be warned, the cry of "gewalt" by the end of the lied will cause your heart to miss one beat! Sound recording gets better throughout the CD, from acceptable mono of the first 2 songs to the crystal-clear stereo of the final items.
Highly recommended. Masterful singing from the queen of German lieder.

4 out of 5 stars This elevates my mood! .......2005-09-08

Although i do not understand each word it sings, i m just happy to hear it till the last song finishes. I feel content.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack.......2004-03-22

It may be hard to track this one down, but it's entirely worth every penny. The music to this soundtrack is so beautiful, I know very little French, but it doesn't matter.

This is also one of my favorite Films as well. If you haven't seen the film, rent it. There's nothing like it, it's beyond fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars That's one of the CDs you juz had to have in your collection.......2003-06-15

This sountrack is simply beyond review. I first knew about it when one of my friends brought the DVD of the movie to the company. And then it was like magic: "I just have to get this soundtrack anyhow!!" I would suggest that it's better to get the DVD first. Knowing the movie will eventually help you to appreciate the sondtrack more coz it's more influential together with the story. I guess not many people know about this movie in my country and I'm grat that my friend helped me discovered this WONDERFUL CD.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not worthy to write a review of this.......2002-01-31

This movie and soundtrack are beyond reviews! There is nothing to say except ... beautiful. I have listened to this CD of the complete movie soundtrack countless times and still find myself amazed by it. The music is the ultimate of Legrand's sweet, searching, yet loungey jazz, with occasional tango and big band style diversions. The movie, while beautiful to look at, is a very simple story in its essence. This soundtrack is what makes people sit through it over and over again. (No disrespect meant to the excellent cast and the incomparable debut of Mlle Deneuve!) The singing voices are as refreshing as cool water and the French comes through with exquisite clarity.

5 out of 5 stars "Les Parapluies..." -- a modern masterpiece.......2001-08-29

The movie "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" is beautiful, tender, and alive with vivid color; this complete soundtrack recording is no different. From the breathy tones of the opening flute solo all the way through to the stirring finale, evey nuance and texture of Michel Legrand's very colorful score is captured perfectly on this recording. If you're unfamiliar with the music from this movie, you may be surprised to discover a number of familiar melodies -- songs that have worked their way into today's jazz and adult contemporary music repetoire (most natoably "Watch What Happens" and "I Will Wait For You"). For me, the real treasure of this recording is the attention the engineers paid to capturing the cast members' singing voices. The French language comes across crystal-clear. And even if you don't speak or understand the language, the passion within each voice -- the rainbow of emotions given forth from the singers, matched perfectly with the sweeping score -- allows the listener to understand the emotinal gyst of what each character is expressing at that moment. And speaking of the cast -- simply amazing. My favorite moment (I can't accurately express why) is when Guy comes home to his aunt's apartment and he runs into her caretaker, Madeline. When they greet each other ("Bon soir Guy", "Bon soir Madeline"), there is such a "tender tension", an unspoken adoration, I practically melt each time.
What really makes this recording the ultimate for "Umbrellas" fans are the six bonus tracks. They are perfect examples of how this beautiful music is being re-interpreted into the jazz scene. Tony Bennett does a terrific turn with "Watch What Happens", and Michel Legrand himself takes to the piano and delivers an amazing 8-minute variation on "I Will Wait For You" -- you have to hear it to believe it!
And, by the way, if you don't have the video already in your collection, I would suggest purchasing it at the same time you're buying this CD. The movie has been restored to it's bright, vivid original color -- eye-popping!

5 out of 5 stars All of the breathtaking music...and more.......2000-06-24

The complete score to Jacques Demy's one-of-a-kind musical is here, and with bonus tracks, adding up to some 115 minutes of material. While not all of Michel Legrand's music is as memorable as the haunting main theme, the pieces which range from playful to mournful are uniformly beautiful and spiced up considerably by Demy's dialogue/lyrics, always sung rather than spoken.

5 out of 5 stars remember.......2006-11-12

It has been25 years since I have heard the unusual childlike voice with the infantile r .I fell in love with Claudine when I first heard her sing and the CD rekindled the romance.

5 out of 5 stars One of many "Best of" recordings.......2006-03-11

Any performer's "Best of" collection is a matter of opinion. I do like every one of Claudine's songs that appear on this CD. However, there are a few of her songs that do not appear on this recording that, in my opinion, would be a better representation of her best work. That said, this collection would be an excellent choice for anyone looking to own a wide representative sample of her work without buying every album that she ever made. The quality is excellent and you will enjoy it if you decide to purchase this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Arleen Auger and Dalton Baldwin-Love Songs.......2007-01-29

A lovely collection -very varied. Arleen Auger has a beautiful voice and Baldwin's accompaniment is wonderful. The 3rd track, by Jayme Ovalle, is, as it says in the accompanying notes, bewitching, and is actually the reason I bought the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of experience.......2006-01-28

There isn't much I can add to the praise bestowed on this album by earlier reviewers. I do think though that a special poignancy is undeniable since Auger's voice, while still beautiful, clearly is not that of a young singer. Her maturity makes her interpretations of these love songs all the more touching. I've probably played this CD a dozen times through the years, far more than any other in my collection. It remains consistently and deeply satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Auger at her best.......2005-04-26

This is a disc that I recommend to my graduating seniors/graduate students who are pursuing a graduate degree or career options in Vocal Performance.
From the standpoint of technique, Auger is practically flawless---"harsh" is not a word I equate with Ms. Auger's singing. She and Dalton Baldwin are impeccable performers on this disc. All the material was wisely chosen and presented, including one of the slowest "O del mio amato ben's" and one of the slowest "Salley Gardens", indicative of the beautiful breath control this artist had. I have to take exception to one of the comments made by one reviewer, of the "lack of sesitivity to the music that most classical singers possess". This is plain ignorant. This reviewer clearly does not understand the great artistic endeavor that classical singers have to have with Song literature---only a non-singer could have said this. Our finest classical singers of memory have all been outstanding musicians. They also have texts to interpret in many languages. I, as a singer-performer-teacher take great umbrage at comments like this which serve only to degrade the richness of so much repertoire.
I too hated the untimely passing of this fabulous singer. She is one of four famous women singers who all died at the age of 53. I think this disc was recorded not to long before she passed away and does reflect her "goodbye" to her audience. However the disc will remain as timely as the repertoire in it.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure.......2003-11-04

This recording is possibly one of the best examples of beautiful singing one will ever find. The repertoire, the artfulness, the line and the sheer beauty of Miss Auger's voice is a rare find. I've just recently purchased another copy as I loaned mine to a friend who begged to keep it! One note on the cover - this new cover art seems to imply this CD is some light version of 1970's Montovani romance music. Nothing could be further from the truth. Though the previous jacket (a photo of Miss Auger on pale pink) did look dated, I hope the next pressing of this (& I'm sure they'll be many more to come!) will give this collection the class packaging it deserves. This is a collector's item. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, sensitive music.......2001-06-15

So first of all, ignore the cheesy cover art and album title. This is a beautiful collection of songs, beautifully performed. Since I concur with the other reviews that laud Auger's performance (though don't forget the accompanist Dalton Baldwin, who is also outstanding), I'll add only the comment that there is a certain melancholy surrounding a lot of the songs and performances that (a) I find haunting and appealing, and (b) you would never know simply from looking at the album.

The performance of "Why, No One to Love" is worth the price of admission alone.

5 out of 5 stars Claudine Painting Music In "Colours".......2006-05-07

"Colours" -- the title of this album of songs interpreted by and delivered by the French songstress Claudine Longet describes the music as well as the performer artist Herself!

While Claudine's magical mystical whispy vocal style is mesmerizing on all of Her recorded works, THIS album, "COLORS" may be Her finest album of them all.

Of the eleven tracks included, all of them being more than enjoyable, i might single out several: Two Donovan penned songs -- "Catch The Wind" and "Colours" (which Claudine captured the spirit of the songs purrrrfectly!) . . . "For Bobbie (For Baby)" . . . and "Am I Blue".

My personal all-time favorite song on this or on any of Claudine's albums is "I Believed it All (Didn't You?)" -- what a poetic wistful nostalgic reminiscence of childhood and its hopes and fears and dreams! Claudine's magic makes this song seem so much like it could be any of our childhoods being re-presented. The album is worth gettijg just for this track alone . . . and all the other ten tracks are absolute gold-mine bonuses! :)

Claudine is a beautiful woman . . . making beautiful music . . . singing beautiful songs . . . beautifully!

Thank You Claudine Longet for all the great recordings You have gifted us with . . . and especially for this magical collection of "Colours"! :)

5 out of 5 stars Claudine's very best work.......2006-03-05

Until now, the only way for Claudine Longet fans to hear the Colours album would have been to buy one of the outrageously expensive Japanese import copies. Well, finally Colours is available again and at a very reasonable price. It should be noted up front that this recording is also an import. This time it's from Russia. Who knew that Claudine had fans in Russia? I do have to admit to being surprised and anxious about the anticipated quality of a Russian recording. However, I'm pleased to report that the quality is excellent. This CD is an exact copy of the original A&M Records recording (SP 4163). There are no bonus tracks on this CD. Accordingly, playing time by modern standards is somewhat short at a little over 31 minutes (11 songs). But what a 31-minute collection. In my opinion, Colours is Claudine's finest album. Claudine's low key performances are a welcome counterpoint to the volume blasting vocals of TV contestants that are being passed off as talent today. The CD comes with a booklet that I presume tells you about Claudine's life and recordings. Unfortunately, it's in Russian. I also presume that the Japanese CD comes with a booklet that is in Japanese. Oh, by the way, have no fear, her songs are sung in English.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER Classic Soundtrack Penned By Curtis!.......2006-06-21

Released after 'Superfly' (1972) & before 'Sparkle' (1976), the soundtrack for 'Claudine' (1974) is one of the important CDs that everyone should have a copy of. Curtis Mayfield's music is interpreted beautifully by the SOULFUL Glady's Knight & The Pips, who had just released their classic 'Imagination' album in 1973 before working on 'Claudine'. The 7 songs work extremely well as important elements for the movie itself (which is NOW AVAILABLE on DVD!). Gladys Knight's classic vocals were perfect in conveying the emotion for the film, and I couldn't imagine another singer on this album. Song Highlights include 'On And On', 'The Makings Of You', and 'Make Yours A Happy Home'. Just when you think Curtis Mayfield couldn't do any better, the classic soundtrack for 'Sparkle' (ft.Aretha!) arrived two years later!! Here's a great idea..Remaster BOTH 'Claudine' & 'Sparkle' on a SINGLE CD!! I did this, and the results are just phenomenal! Come on record company..WAKE UP!! People WANT the 'Claudine' CD...Remaster it OR ELSE!!

5 out of 5 stars I need help too !!!.......2006-05-05

I have loved this soundtrack since well before I saw the movie.
The writing the production and the performance are all top shelf efforts. But somebody please tell me $189.99 is indeed a typo and I can soon get my hands on a copy from somewhere. I would sincerely appreciate the help.

Thanks kindly,

Jerry

5 out of 5 stars I NEEEEED TO FIND THIS CD.......2006-03-24

Like so many others I grew up witht his movie and the soundtrack is OFF THE CHAIN!!! After years of searching by accident I finally found the soundtrack, but unfortunately it was in a CD case full of classics when it was stolen while I was stationed on ship. The current price for this wonderful CD is totally beyond my means; therefore, if anyone knows were I can get the soundtrack please email me at dydreemer@aol.com. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars FAB!!!.......2006-03-24

This is a timeless soundtrack. The entire album is EXCELLENT! My absolute favorite cut is "To Be Invisible". I get a rush each and every time I play it. As they used to say back in the day, Gladys peed on it.

4 out of 5 stars tHE HAUNTING SOUNDS OF CLAUDINE LONGET.......2006-03-07

From the moment I first heard her music, I was enthralled. What a gem! On poor material she sounds so, so. But on good material she sines brillantly with her soft vocal style. I do believe A & M records did their very best to show case her style and provided the very best accompany ment of musicians and arrangements. I have tracked down five of her albums in the past and often put them on single cds to listen to my favorites. My only regret is that she is no longer making sweet music!!!

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection but not very representative.......2005-03-31

This collection is good as a moderately priced CD of Longet's songs. But I hardly would call it her "very best": most tracks on the disc are taken from the 1969-72 period, leaving out a great deal of her album songs from 1967 and 1968 that made her style so distinguished. I would recommend to buy this CD together with "A&M Digitally Remastered Best" that covers her A&M albums, which personally I find her truly best.

2 out of 5 stars Viva La Longet! - but, sadly, not here.......2004-02-22

There's an undeniable magic when Claudine Longet has her way with an arrangement by Nick DeCaro. It's four parts camp to one part brilliance, and it can really hook you if you keep an open mind. This collection, however, is not a best-of or even the place to start. Get Claudine's "Love is Blue" album which has most of her all-time greats - Randy Newman's "Snow," "Small Talk," "Happy Talk," a hysterical "Falling In Love Again," the Bee Gee's "Holiday" (you have to hear it!) and - I swear to God - a love song to a seal. There's never been anything quite like her....

5 out of 5 stars IT'S BEEN A LONG LONG TIME, LONGET.......2003-05-06

"The Very Best Of Claudine Longet" is a very pleasant and enjoyable musical experience. The album does not reflect Claudine's "best" which are scattered throught the albums of her recording career but it is truly representational of the "Claudine Experience". Her mellow whispy voice evokes quiet intimate warmth.
Perhaps her most famous recording opens this album: "Hello Hello"! This was my first introduction to the person and music of Ms Longet a way back when. She does a unique rendition of the Beach Boys "God Only Knows" which certainly does Brain Wilson proud.
My personal favorite on this collection is "As If You Walked Away". There is a sad melancholy aura that permeates this song and lingers with you long when it's over.
I can't imagine the late sixties/early seventies without the musical soundtrack of Claudine Longet. I'm happy she came along and recorded the tracks she did. . . and now we can listen to them all these years later with that same naive joy we had way back then.
I don't know if Claudine will ever or plans ever to record again, but I would be glad if she would. Thanks Claudine for all the beautiful songs and thanks for all the happy memories of youthful years. You're a beautiful woman who made beautiful music singing beautiful songs.

4 out of 5 stars A Ravel omnium gatherum in Decca's best sound.......2006-08-09

Dutoit was Decca's house conductor of French music for almost two decades, and here is gathered at budget price all the significant orchestral works as well as the two piano concertos. The spledid sonics and Dutoit's reputation will probably be enough to attract listeners who want everything from one conductor, but to my ears none of these performances rises to the very highest level.

With Boulez, Munch, and Monteux looking over his shoulder, Dutoit's readings come off as colorful, restless, bright, often brash, and lacking in that final touch of elegant style. Outside the French tradition we also have great Ravel recordings form Karajan, Reiner, Bernstein, and (in the two operas) Maazel. I'm not so sure it's such a good idea to put all one's egs in Dutoit's basket.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Seriously over-praised.......2007-06-18

A famous set by a famous singer. But the voice was going and it shows. Moore is great as always on the piano, and the interpretations are good. But the voice isn't up to it anymore, and sometimes it is very bad indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Best version of Ava Maria anywhere.......2003-10-05

The entire CD is excellent, but two songs above all stand out and, as far as I know, there are no better performances: Ava Maria and Wiegenlied (D. 867). Everything is beautiful about her version of Ava Maria, but what stands out above all is the authenticity of her performance - it is heartbreakingly beautiful. I've heard 8 or 9 other performances and none came anywhere close. In fact, I can't really listen to others as they all seem to miss the point. With regard to Wiegenlied, Baker's singing has a preciousness to it which is perfectly apt for this song. Although there are many other excellent performances, these two essential songs alone merit the purchase of the album.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate and spiritual.......2001-07-15

If any recording deserves to be called sublime, this one does. Janet Baker sings with great purity and passion. She captures what is most fleeting and eternal in Schubert's music. As an earlier reviewer said, it's unfortunate that the liner notes lack text and translations. But if you have other recordings of these songs, you may find yourself removing the liners from them to follow this performance.

5 out of 5 stars An essential CD at a bargain price!.......2000-02-28

Although I have admired Schubert lieder sung on the radio and in concert halls, this pair of CDs originally recorded in 1971 and 1981 represents my initial purchase of these minature masterworks. And what a first choice! This generous collection of songs for the female voice (and a few originally intended for the male voice) is beautifully interpreted by Dame Janet Baker with masterly accompaniments at the piano by Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons. Here you have unforgettable renditions of "The Trout", "Death and the Maiden", "Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel", "Ave Maria" (the closing musical work performed in the original version of Disney's Fantasia, incidentally) and 38 additional songs (the two wiegenleid or "cradle songs" are enchanting!) at so modest a price. There are no English translations provided with the songs, but with Schubert's extraordinary gift of word-painting, they are barely necessary and should not hinder your appreciation of these quintessential discs.

1 out of 5 stars No Liner Notes!.......2000-02-19

A previous reviewer heavily praised this 2-volume set, and I do not dispute him with respect to the quality of the performances. However, a fatal flaw is the lack of any liner notes whatever. Had I known that, I would not have bought the CDs. For an English-speaking US citizen, the lack of the German lyrics, along with English translations, makes a collection of lieder almost worthless. Arghh!
