5 out of 5 stars Excellent new renditions of her earlier hits.......2006-09-18

Dionne Warwick was not fond of this release, which is why it was only released in Japan, where she is still respected. However, her new solo renditions of her hits show that, even though her range of 40 years ago is diminished and her angelic head voice is gone, she can still deliver with the voice of experience.

Particularly surprising in this set is the new, extended version of "In Between the Heartaches" and the updated version of "Don't Make Me Over," which is now a hot, uptempo R&B track. Thirty-six years after recording "Anyone Who Had a Heart," Warwick's voice shows the listener that she very well knows the feeling of helplessness and desperation that should go into the interpretation of this song. Gone were the days when she had to simply sing the notes and add some feeling; this time around, the feeling is injected automatically into her renditions.

Warwick also re-recorded "The Look of Love" and "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)," the latter of which is a bit absurd and comical. I admit, I chuckled a few times as I listened to the experienced Queen singing about the wishes and marriage hopes of a naive and illusioned princess.

Also included in this set is a heartbreaking new interpretation of "Message to Michael." Unlike the original version, which leaves the listener feeling that the youthful protagonist still has a chance to gain happiness and find her missing man, the mix of emotions infused in her smoky, aged voice leaves the listener with the impression that she has already resigned herself to losing him forever (or worse... that she may not live to see him again).

Her voice may not be as pristine as it once was, and she may not be able to hold the money notes for as long as she used to, but I was definitely surprised and enlightened at the discovery of this collection. I give it 5 stars for effort (and because of the lack of guest artists, even though her background singers sometimes carry more of the song than I would like).

5 out of 5 stars Better arrangements.......2006-02-14

Dionne sings Dionne II is much better than vol.1, the arrangements are better and it's Dionne by herself no duets, this cd is now a collector's item, I understand that Dionne wasn't happy with this release because the songs still sound like they are in there demo form, still Dionne sounds good and this a wonderful edition to her catalog!, I love 'In Between The Heartaches', and Dionne still delivers the emotional impact of 'Anyone Who Had A Heart', and Dionne does a nice slower version of 'What A Fool Believes', now that Dionne has re-visited her hits, I hope soon she'll release a cd of new material.

4 out of 5 stars Dionne Sings Dionne II far surpasses the first........2003-05-07

This compilation of newly recorded gems by Ms. Warwick is a must have for die-hard fans and for new converts. The arrangements are beautiful and they allow Ms. Warwick's, now baritone, voice to still sound strong and full. "Then Came You" is especially catchy with Dionne doing all her own background work. Who needs those Spinners anyway! The best tracks are "In Between The Heartaches" and "The Look Of Love." Weakest: "What A Fool Believes." Sorry, Dionne, I've heard Michael McDonald sing it, and he's better.

5 out of 5 stars Gem!!!!! Gem!!! Gem!!!!.......2001-08-07

Ms. Warwick is the orignal diva of all divas. This album is testimony that Dionne is still one of the most underrated singers of our time. The musical arrangements are just superb. Especially, In between the Heartaches, what a treasure. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this album over and over. Must have for all of Warwick loyal fans like myself who fell in love with her voice ever since I first listen to her music. Keep making beautiful music Ms. Warwick.

5 out of 5 stars Dionne makes us over wonderfully well!.......2001-03-26

A few words,"Why isn't this released in the USA? I don't understand how this works or doesn't. Does Dionne not have a company in the USA? This album proves that Dionne can still sing at 60 yrs. old. This is a great album with some great remakes. I have the originals. They are great as well. I can't decide which I like better. My favorite cut on Dionne 2 is In Between the Heartaches. I had this on an old LP, the original and liked it then. I think Message to Michael is better than the original in some ways because of the instrumentation. Well, maybe not better but I'm partial to this one. Dionne has now done three different versions of Say a Little Prayer:The original, the one on Dionne Sings Dionne and now a new one. Again, I can't decide which one I like best of the three. I also liked the lady that sang it on My Best Friend's Wedding soundtrack but didn't like the fact she sings The momment me wake up. I guess she was trying to sound Jamaican or something. Anyway, like all the songs on here, Look of Love, but of course I like the original too. I guess I'm partial to Carpenters' Close to You but I do like this version very much. I have heard Dionne's original of this and this is definitely better. I think that I like the original version of You'll Never Get to Heaven. I'm not wild about the backup singers on this but it's still good singing by her. I think Dionne is the most underrated singer of our time. Why don't they ever do a behind the music on her on VH1 or do her on Biography? This is a wonderful album even though it costs more because it's an import. I think if it were released with a single it might have a hit for her and put her up there with Cher for some kind of musical record. Now, I wish she would remake Valley of the Dolls. She kind of remade Alfie on her live album, Hot Live and Otherwise. I love the old songs but also hope that Dionne does some new ones and that she keeps singing as long as she can. I guess she smokes and hope she will quit that. I met her doing a concert along with Burt Bacharach and it was one of the best concerts I'd ever been too. Buy this and you won't be dissappointed. One other song that is great is Don't Make Me Over. Glad she did make it over, it's great and the arrangement fits the changing times. Hope Dionne continues to sing forever. She is one of my favorites of all time. She has now been done on Biography. Now they need to put her on Behind the Music. I am still listening to this after I bought it a least a year ago. Why isn't it released here? It should be. I think there would be many hits from this album.
