Live from London [Live]

Perhaps New York's greatest cabaret star, Andrea Marcovicci crosses the pond for this live 1996 performance with longtime pianist-collaborator Glenn Mehrbach. Marcovicci is often described as a singing actress--she has appeared on both stage and screen--and her interpretations are always dramatic, always tasteful, always eminently listenable. Her program is comprised of American love songs, from classic Rodgers and Hart to newer songs by Stephen Sondheim and William Finn, and Marcovicci occasionally adds informative or humorous patter ("It'll be about every kind of love imaginable ... but not too much true love. I am still essentially a torch singer, and for a torch singer, true love is an oxymoron. Besides, I wouldn't know what to wear.") It's hard to go wrong with any Marcovicci album, but hearing her in her element before a live audience is especially welcome. --David Horiuchi

The world can't get enough of Madonna, and with CD/DVD sets like The Confessions Tour dropping regularly, it's little wonder why. As a thrower of fantasy dance parties, she is peerless. As a physical role model for the 40-ish women who grew up on her music, she rules. And as an arbiter of what's going to sound shockingly original in any given decade--well, duh. The Confessions Tour rounds up songs from way back--"Ray of Light" and "La Isla Bonita" make the DVD, and "Lucky Star" and "Like a Virgin" are on the CD as well as the DVD--but this concert, filmed in 2006 at London's Wembley Arena, aims its sturdiest spotlight on Confessions on a Dance Floor, Madge's 2005 disco disc. You could argue, then, that unless you're in it for the sheer DVD spectacle (and what a spectacle it is), there's no sense in owning this package. Only you wouldn't be right. Because as any on-the-ball Madonna fan knows, what she's doing musically is telling a story--you may already know the characters, but that doesn't mean she hasn't completely reworked the plot. To that end, "I Love New York" gets its rock on, "Let It Will Be" has a musical temper tantrum, and "Hung Up" goes for the drama queen award. You've heard these songs before, but you've never heard them quite like this, to borrow a bad informercial phrase. As twisted and hopped-up as they've become, they're all worth getting to know again. --Tammy La Gorce

Best Madonna Ever.......2007-07-12
This is my favorite Madonna Concert ever. My favorite performance are future lovers, La Isla bonita, and Erotica ( best erotica mix ever) and of course Like a Virgin. Madonna showed alot of energy and showed how creative and original she always is. I cant stop watching it. Madonna Definetly is the Queen of Music.
The Confessions Tour, Live from London.......2007-07-05
Wow I pre orderded befor it was available in stores and actually got it the day before general distribution, A great DVD, don't care much for CD's I listen to satelite radio most of the time
The Evolution of Madonna : Pink Elephants & Lemonade.......2007-06-26
Its ironic that Madonna's better stage performances are all coming late in her career. "The Confessions Tour" is by far her most artistic, musically challenging and diverse concert tour, and this package only serves to reiterate what an astounding talent she is. This review is primarily for the DVD, as the CD is just the audio of the DVD ripped anyway.
Think about this - what other 48 year old do you know who can perform aerobic dancing, sing simultaneously, and hold a note, all while wearing a bikini! Well, I certainly don't know anyone like that, and what is perhaps most astounding is just how classy the entire act is, even through the admittedly sexually charged bits.
The best thing on this 2.5 hour extravaganza is "Erotica", a completely reworked version (in actuality, Madonna sings the original version of `Erotica' she intended for release - with the lyrics of a track called "You Thrill Me"). My favorite part is the last four-song segment, where Madonna introduces her `Disco' persona. Her backup dancers as ever, defy gravity and are good-looking to boot. One dancer in particular stands out - a skinny long haired young man who is as flexible as a rubber band. However, "Erotica" has never looked so good in any of its' avatars, and I thought this version left the studio recording light years behind - its that good.
This is also the first Madonna concert to feature so much dancing. Madonna actually dances frenetically to many numbers, including a highly stylized and choreographed routine with two female backup dancers to "Music". There is also a special feature segment that shows her practicing this - unbelievable. I have had so many friends who were dancers in their 20s who didn't move like this. I still cannot believe this is a woman pushing 50.
Above all, there is the music. Tracks that seemed weak on the "Confessions" studio album, are made more accessible here. "Get Together" which I always used to skip, becomes a keeper. Similarly, weak track "Jump" is actually listenable on this one. Some of the more interesting portions of the concert involve Madonna's friend "Isaac" (who even wears a turban at one point). I thought this was Mirwais, but I could be wrong. Unfortunately, when she tries to make this concert `spiritual' or `soulful', it begins to unravel. They should have just kept this entire concert upbeat and energetic.
No review would be complete without telling you the downsides of the product, and there are three here. One is the godawful version of "Isaac" that Madonna tries to pull off here. This is a poor second cousin to "Frozen", with a similar `Eastern' tinge to it (I could see where they were going with this one, but it just doesn't work). This is followed by a dreary rendition of "Drowned World" (possibly Madonna's greatest ballad), which is followed by the hideous "Paradise (Not for Me)" (which is a beautiful song, but Isaac and Madonna ruin it beyond recognition here). This should be seen to be believed. How they could massacre a simple melody like this is beyond me.
However, we're back in action with singalong versions of "Hung Up" (including a four minute shout-out/call-back to the audience where Madonna asks them to repeat "Time goes back, so slowly" in her infamously fake British accent), and "Sorry" (which has Madonna kissing one of her female dancers, and some amount of funky dancing).
Madonna sometimes exits the stage every now and then, whereupon her dancers take the spotlight and dance to a variety of Madonna collages and flash images. This is not necessarily a good thing - in fact, its downright boring. However, the `special features' on the disc, aren't really special at all. In fact, they are at best footage of Madonna rehearsing, with a tremendous amount of time spent on her dancers waxing about her in French accents ("I can't believe I'm really here", "Oh My God, I'm dancing for Madonna!", and "This is a once in a lifetime experience!" etc.). Nothing out of the ordinary, and certainly nothing to write home about. But the great thing about these is watching Madonna actually dance. Without the makeup she sports on stage, she looks much, much older, and quite tired and haggard, but who can blame her, poor thing?
All in all, this is a must-buy, even if you're not really a Madonna fan. I'm sort of neutral about her, but if I consider that I like this much more than some of the Rock DVDs I have in my collection, then Madonna must have done something right. This is a fabulous, colorful and very entertaining concert, and no one I know has ever regretted purchasing this. Yes, its very `pink' and targeted towards a gay audience in so many subliminal ways, but no matter what your demographic, theres no way you can not enjoy the sheer fun this is. Get it now!
A celebration of a great comeback!.......2007-06-26
Thank you, Madonna, for actually allowing the UNEDITED version of this great concert to make it to DVD...along with an excellent CD for jamming to in the car! I attempted to watch the NBC special and it was so cut up, it gave me a headache! I had went last July to Philadelphia to see this concert live...so it was great to see it on TV....but the editing was so horrible...I just had to turn the channel. The DVD, however, is a bit better, and it is great to be able to relive the concert over again from the comforts of my living room. All of the songs are great....and of course my favorites "Jump" and "Sorry" were the best (to me). I especially loved hearing the Pet Shop Boys (another one of my favorite groups) on "Sorry"...and that cool remix! I hope Madonna's next album is as good, or not better, than Confessions. There's no one better on the dancefloor than Madonna!
She is the goddess .......2007-06-11
I have seen Madonna live in concert several times. This tour was indeed the best. The confessions tour is a combination of the best dance music Madonna has put together and a show that is very similar to a Cirque de Soleil performance. Controversial as always and extremely contagious. I recommend this DVD to all Madonna fans.

Tom Jones Live!.......2006-02-01
Tom Jones "Live in Las Vegas" (from the Flamingo) is one of my favorite live vinyl recordings in my collection. This tunesmith's mix, on that album, of County-Pop-Soul that is backed by an equally impressive band never fails to thrill me. My vinyl copy of "Tom Jones Live" (from London's Talk of the Town) is not as great but can still be given 3 stars. I am not motivated to jump through hoops to transfer my vinyl stuff to my hard drive and then to a CD/MP3 player. Luckily this Las Vegas heavy "From Las Vegas to London" CD is now available and it combines much of the best from these two vinyl pieces of gold in my vinyl collection into one CD source. Tom is one of those performers that somehow is better "live" than in the studio. When I have been lucky enough to catch his live act I could feel his "joy of performing" in the air. His "recorded live" material exudes an indefinable excitement that is not somehow captured in the recording studio. Tom's recent cable gig (on the A & E special?) "Tom Jones - Live at Cardiff Castle" is just one more piece of evidence that my theory is correct. Besides his "joy of performing" I suspect it must be those great live rhythm and blues arrangements, added to that heavy horn section, plus Tom's blasting soulful voice that contribute to my enjoyment of his "recorded live" material. No Tom Jones fan should be without this CD.
"HARD TO HANDLE" HAS HOT AND HEAVY HORNS!!!.......2005-06-13
Alright kids listen up! This CD has the best R&B song ever recorded just sittin' there between trax 3 and 5 like a greyhound in the startin' gate waitin' for you to set it free! Live from Vegas in '68, Mr. Jones is on stage at the Flamingo Hilton with the BADDEST bunch of horn players ANYONE has ever heard ANYWHERE at ANYTIME!! I know that's a bit bold, but I would not take the time to hook y'all up if I wurnt sure 'bout this!! This live version of the Otis Redding classic "Hard to Handle" is the finest example of what soul music is all about!! The FATTEST horns you're ever gonna hear! Someone is CARVING up the stage with that wah-wah pedal on that sweet Gibson guitar! Hammond B3 paintin' those lovely backround colors! Mr. Jones is doin' things with that voice that could easily discourage even Ray Carles, Michael McDonald, or Marvin into another line of work!! God forbid! If for no other reason than to hear R&B like it ought be done, this am the CD for you! My folks had the original Tom Jones Live In Las Vegas at the Flamingo record way back in 1969 and I wore the vinyl thinner than Tom Delay's conscience! Track 4 is textbook soul!! Enjoy!
REAL RAW LIVE ENERGY from THE TIGER.......2003-01-01
This album was taken from Tom's album LIVE IN LAS VEGAS AT THE FLAMINGO and also a few tracks are from LIVE AT THE TALK OF THE TOWN. It's all live and very cool. Great to hear the between song banter with the audience and get a feel of the concert back in the 60's. He does an amazing version of "DANNY BOY" adding as Tom says, "a bit of blues to it." Also very cool version of "YESTERDAY" and "HEY JUDE."

Barbara Cook Scores.......2005-12-16
She is a phenomenon! Her voice still soars and the notes are well within her grasp. The music she has chosen to perform is exceptionally beautiful and exceptionally moving in its execution. Ms Cook proves once again that she is a national treasure.
The Glorious Barbara Cook.......2004-11-14
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Cook. She told me this was her favorite recording of her career; I agree. It is an extraordinary concert. Barbara Cook's glorious performance is perfection.
PURE MAGIC!!.......2001-09-11
PURE VOICE - PURE BEAUTY - WITH A FULL ORCHESTRA BEHIND HER.
THE FACT THAT IT IS "LIVE" DOES NOT TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM
HER PERFORMANCE. THE BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD!!
Barbara Cook - Better Than Ever !.......1999-07-28
There is no one like Barbara Cook in the Musical Theater genre except perhaps Elaine Stritch when it comes to talent and class. Ms.Cook has the range and versatility that brings songs to life and makes them live on in our hearts. I saw her do this same show live at the Naples Philharmonic, and it was very clear that the audience knew they were in the presence of greatness.
One of the finest popular music concert recordings ever.......1998-12-08
Barbara Cook is a singer with the rare combination of astounding vocal prowess and a deep feeling for the meaning of the lyrics she is singing. She never "shows off" when singing, just conveys very beautifully the essence of each song, whether light or depressing, fast or slow, gentle or full-blast. Her gifts are fully displayed in this wonderful CD, which compares favorably to her two other classic concert CD`s.

As Hammerstein writes in the opening song, "Many dames with lofty aims strive for lofty goals"--and Te Kanawa strives for successful crossover. Her beautiful singing exhibits impeccable diction and excellent phrasing; but "A Fine Romance" lacks anger and humor, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" lacks a storyteller, and "All the Things You Are" lacks romanticism. However, happy songs like "All Through the Day," "Look for the Silver Lining," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," are successfully interpreted. Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations enhance Kern's beauty through his captivating use of obbligato instruments. A pleasant, if not wholly satisfactory, listening experience. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
kiri kern.......2007-03-29
Kiri is sensational on this CD. Jerome Kern music is stupendous and the arrangements superb. Three top esses.
Kiri sing Kern is a great experience.......2004-01-18
I love the way she sings Kern's songs. Though certainly not opera, Kern's songs benefit from an an operatic approach--not all of them, but certainly ones such Smoke gets in your Eyes, The song is you, All the things you are. I love Kern;s songs sung in many styles but Kiri's way is one of the best.
On the other hand, I did not like Kiri singing Berlin.
Lacks Splendor.......2002-09-01
Though I do enjoy Kiri's interpretation of most music, and this CD was decent, I did not find any piece particularly memorable.
The voice is undeniably beautiful, and Kiri has managed to keep her maturing voice sounding somewhat young, yet I find that I much prefer her rendition of "The Laughing Song" to that of "Smoke Gets in YOur Eyes."
If you love Kern, and couldn't care less who performs it, than purchase this CD. If you are a fan of Kiris', then perhaps it would be best to avoid this purchase...for it is not a shining star in her vast collection of CDs. All in all, it was a disappointment.
White Glove Kern.......2001-05-20
I am the first to admit that most "crossover" albums, be they of classical performers singing pop or vice versa never quite cross over. This album does splendidly. Kern's music is the most related to classical operetta , and therefore the least jazziest. Operatic soprano Kiri Te Kanawa gives luscious, heartfelt readings of these wonderful songs, backed by glamorous orchestrations. Hearing a voice of such opulence and beauty in this music is a rare treat. Just listen to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ,"Long Ago and Far Away" or "The Song is You" and prepare to be swept away to another, more elegant time.
mildly disappointing.......2000-09-30
Sometimes cross-over works, sometimes not. While Kiri te Kanawa has a beautiful voice, she never gets into the idiom of these Jerome Kern masterpieces sufficiently to convey their stories or their subtleties. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes especially stands out, she sings it with none of the pathos the song demands and her version pales compared to the Platters. The orchestral arrangements are decent and in many of the songs the purity of her voice is enough to carry them, but overall I would say this is a disappointing example of a crossover record. Ms. te Kanawa should stick to what she does best.

As Stephen Sondheim's new shows become fewer and further between, tribute concerts have become a popular way to fill the gaps. Among others, there was Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall in 1993. There was Sondheim: A Celebration in 1997. Now there's Sondheim: Tonight's Celebration--err, make that Sondheim Tonight, a live London concert, and a mixed bag it is. Longtime Sondheim followers will enjoy Len Cariou's brief return as Sweeney Todd, the reunion of the cast of Side by Side by Sondheim, and the appearance of British singers Cleo Laine, Maria Friedman, and Michael Ball. On the other hand, Dame Edna Everage (a.k.a. Barry Humphries) provides a revised "Ladies Who Lunch" that is best skipped. Most notable are the recorded premieres of two instrumental works Sondheim wrote as a student, A Very Short Violin Piece and the more interesting Variations on a Theme (Katie Malone) for solo piano. This two-CD set clocks in at a generous 139 minutes, but over a half-hour is monologues and reminiscences (all separately tracked, thankfully), and another 16 minutes is pleasant but undistinguished orchestral arrangements. No doubt the concert was more entertaining to attend than to listen to on CD, but the Sondheim completist should find something of interest here--or at least get a fix while waiting for Wise Guys. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
There is something for everyone on this CD!.......2002-08-15
Stop with the Dame Edna insults! She performed with the blessing of Mr. Sondheim - helped sell tickets for an excellent charity - and thrilled both the audience and cast. The cast members filled the wings to hear the Great Dame! The audience was in stitches. The London Philharmonic was in top form. And while one reviewer may not like Michael Ball - he has legions of fans that do love him. Julia Mackenzie's Barcelona is awesome! Admittedly I am biased about this CD - but rest assured, there is something for everyone on this recording. And the sales of the CD benefit the Alan J. Lerner Cancer Charity!
Hardly ideal, but nice instrumentals.......2000-07-07
It seems to be a long held maxim that, although the Brits adore Sondheim, they often have little idea how to perform his work. This concert recording of Sondheim's work (I expect that there will one day be more concert recordings of Sondheim's work then cast recordings), with one or two exceptions, seems to bear this out.
The most enjoyable performance on this album comes from the musicians. The opening overture and the Act II Entr'acte, as well as a lovely arrangement of two songs from Pacific Overtures, are given a delightful treatment by the London Philharmonic. Two instrumental obscurities written by the young Sondheim, a violin sonata and a piano theme, are capably played in what I believe is their recorded debut.
And then. I personally can live with Dame Edna's twisted rendition of "Ladies who Lunch," but Michael Ball's tortured singing is a taste which I have not yet acquired (although he does provide one of several amusing anecdotes between songs). Most of the remaining performances are quite forgettable, and although there aren't any major clunkers as there were on the LA cast recording, there aren't any major redeeming performances either.
If you're a Sondheim fan, you've probably heard all these songs done better. It's a bit frightening that the most enjoyable parts of a Sondheim concert are the bits between the songs.
Sondheim is my fav....but sheesh!.......1999-12-23
There have been SOOOO many excellent concerts of Sondheim's work....and this ISN'T one of them. Many people hate Dame Edna's LADIES WHO LUNCH, well they are unaware that it is a joke! Maria Friedman disgraces all of Sondheim's beautiful work, as do many of her co-stars. Please consider another compliation of Sondheim's work.
DAME EDNA IS ONLY FOR THOSE WITH A SENSE OF HUMOUR.......1999-12-12
This CD set perfectly showcases the greatness of Sondheim's music and lyrics. As a bonus, it has the privilege of Dame Edna singing The Ladies Who Lunch like it has never been sung before or ever will be again. It has to be heard (and to laugh with and enjoyed). A must for all theatre and music lovers.
What a disappointment!.......1999-10-10
I am a devoted Sondheim fan but these discs try my loyalty. Dame (or is it Damn?) Edna is an insult to Sondheim and his music. Now I know why they waited so long to release these discs.

Customer Reviews:
Good coloratura work by Elizabeth Futral.......2007-05-27
This is an interesting CD from soprano Elizabeth Futral. The theme of this is a set of operatic arias sung in English, not in the original French or Italian or. . . . I'm not sure how sold I am on the concept, but, after all, it's the singing and musicality that is most important. And, by that measure, Elizabeth Futral does very nicely.
The accompanying booklet begins by noting that (page 8) "The voice of the light soprano has enchanted listeners for centuries." Futral's singing is characteristic of this type of voice.
In this era, any coloratura soprano has two challenges: first, to compare with the past generation's astonishingly talented practitioners, well exemplified by Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sill. Second, though, there are some wonderful coloratura sopranos today against whom others will be compared, with Natalie Dessay and Sumi Jo among the most adept. Thus, Futral will almost automatically be compared with such exemplars. I do not think one could say she is the equal of those four just mentioned, but she does not compare badly either.
From the Wikipedia: "In musical notation, the Italian word staccato (literally detached, plural staccatos or staccati) indicates that notes are sounded in a detached and distinctly separate manner, with silence making up the latter part of the time allocated to each note. The rhythm is not affected. Notes identified as staccato should be played or sung abruptly and short." This is worthy of comment, since the "Bell Song" from "Lakme," one of the selections on this CD, features many such notes. Futral sings them well. Her performance in this work is well done (although it is somewhat jarring, again, to hear it sung in English). She begins with a nice high note and a bang up following trill. She displays good agility and features nice technique on staccato notes. Overall, this is well done. Toward the end, which calls for great ornamentation, she seems a bit hesitant at time, but she concludes with a nicely sung high note.
Other examples of her singing. From Handel's "Alcina," she sings "Come take me in your arms." Her voice is a light, standard coloratura voice (although not all coloratura sopranos have such a voice, of course). She displays considerable agility, a decent trill, and good ornamentation. There is a bit of harshness on a high note toward the close, but hardly fatal to the overall positive effect of her singing.
From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," there is "My soul is filled with love for you" (otherwise known as "O luce di quest'anima"). Her version is not too shabby when compared with such greats as Sutherland and Jo. The cabaletta shows off, again, her agile voice. Good staccato high notes. Nice trills and a well nailed final high note.
Then there is the charming "Son vergin vezzosa" from Bellini's "I Puritani," here entitled "A maiden adorning." Again, nice agility, good trills, well done florid singing technique. While there is some harshness in the penultimate high note, overall, well done.
In short, Futral adds to a currently rich supply of coloratura sopranos, and compares well with the best of them.
At Last a Solo Recital on CD.......2005-03-19
Elizabeth Futral is one of those rare sopranos who seems to put pacing of her career, care of the voice, and commitment to repertoire range ahead of the too early media blitz that can hamper a singer's career. Clearly she has it all - beauty of voice, beauty of physical presence, fine acting skills, intelligence, and interpretive insights.
Having seen her Cleopatra in LA Opera's GUILIO CESARE and in SF Opera's production of Previn's STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE put her high on the list of important new sopranos. This rather strange recording gives samples of her foray's into all styles from Handel to Previn and does a fine job in capturing the beauty of her phrasing and quality of her seamless soprano voice. It is somewhat distracting to place a first recital recording before the public being sung entirely in English, especially for those who are unfamiliar with Futral's gifts. But credit Chandos with the courage to try something different, something that may introduce new audiences to the opera field.
Surely after the recent successes of Futral performances in the opera houses more recordings will follow. Meanwhile this is a tasty sampler of just how versatile - and special - Elizabeth Futral is. Grady Harp, March 05
An Interesting display.......2003-07-23
Coloratura-soprano Elizabeth Futral is a remarkable artist with a beautiful instrument and a most impressive technique. Her appearences in record stores are mostly on lesser known and up and coming labels such as Opera Rara and CHANDOS; with a few performances on DG.
This CD has an unusual semi-personal package. Duets, trios and quartets are featured. The title of the program is called Great Operatic Arias which seems rather broad for a soprano recital disc.
Futral sings well as always, however the content seems to lack a bit of intricacy and polish. Each aria, duet etc leaves you wondering whether or not a bit more time could have been put into this. The arias range from baroque to 20th century; covering four languages.
The entire program is performed in English and this is interesting... Although some of the arias just sound plain strange in English! It is a very nice thing to actually completely and instantly understand what is being sung. I was most impressed with the CHANDOS Lucia di Lammermoor. Futral probably gave her best performance on record in that role. She is astonishingly good on that recording. Her mad scene is awesome!
Overall this is a pleasing recording and Futral dazzles her listeners with her crystal clear high notes and vibrant tone. I look forward to more recordings of her. Hopefully she'll have a chance to record some more opera in its original language. I think that its time for a new Puritani or Sonnambula. Wouldn't she be the perfect candidate?

Some Enchanted Evening is enchanting!.......2002-07-26
This album takes you on a stroll down memory lane, enchanting all the way. It is relaxing and soothing listening, and will be great background music for a candlelit dinner for two, an evening party with a mix of ages and backgrounds, or just to sing with while you get some work done. The orchestration is excellent and the performances wonderfully smooth. A hit for everyone!
