Album Description

Along with big-band material drawn from the American Songbook, Back in Town features such contemporary pop numbers as the inspirational "All About Me" and the forceful title track, both given the chart-topping treatment from Chris Lord-Alge, one of the best mix engineers in the world, with credits ranging from Madonna to Green Day. The big band material truly breaks new ground amongst the young crooners on the scene today. Much of the album was recorded in Los Angeles at the fabled Capitol Studios in Studio A--where the walls have resonated with the voices of such iconic singers as Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin and Dean Martin. As if that magical setting wasn't enough, several renowned arrangers including Patrick Williams, Vince Mendoza and Sammy Nestico were brought in to provide new, original charts for classic numbers. On top of that, the legendary Al Schmitt, winner of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards, recorded and mixed all of the album's big band orchestral tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Dusk convert.......2007-06-30

I fail to see how anyone could not enjoy this CD. 80 years "young" and recently converted to Matt Dusk I was not disappointed. An avid fan of jazz and good popular music for many years I found myself playing this CD over and over again. The lively "Back in Town"blows me away as does "All about me" As with many music lovers I really enjoy the Michael Buble's Peter Cincotti's etc of this world and have a vast collection of their music - but there's always room for one more! Almost every singer has his or her own style and Matt's interpretation somehow sounds richly different. The standards on this CD are as good as any I've heard. I too especially love the poignant "A million kisses late"and "Where were you when" Good luck Matt you deserve your place up there with the best - long live these talented performers of "My kind of Music"

1 out of 5 stars The Best Is NOT yet to come.......2007-06-29

I am in love with Michael Buble, so I thought I'd give Dusk a try. I'm glad I previewed it before I bought his CD. People are giving him too much credit. I think his voice sounds terrible, and he does not do the songs he sings justice, or anything close to it. While I think Buble actually improves the old classics, this guy just puts them to shame. His voice makes his music sound cheap. Stay away!!

1 out of 5 stars Very Overrated .......2007-06-18

The music is good but I've heard lounge singers and next door neighbors that have better voices. I love this genre of music and thought I would give him a try. Never again. This was a joke. You can't even compare him to the rich vocals of Michael Buble. Matt Dusk isn't in the same league. Save your money!

1 out of 5 stars No Jazz to be Found Here.......2007-06-06

Jazz, it has been said, "is a uniquely American art form." Considering that, it is often very difficult for a non-American English singer to produce a piece of work that can stand up to any of the jazz greats.

Mr. Dusk's voice is certainly very professional, even if he betrays a bit of that Canadian accent that we Americans find so annoying (at least in our Jazz). For most of the songs, it sounds like he's trying to compete with the band, or at least singing behind them. This album is just dripping with syrup and processed music. Additionally, his voice is entirely devoid of emotion. I suspect that his fans are more fans of his looks than his voice.

Mr. Dusk certainly has potential in the 12 to 16 year-old female demographic or perhaps singing on the stage in a Broadway musical where a good clean, bright voice is needed and not a Jazz artist who needs to express the feelings and emotions of the lyrics. If they do a big, flashy all musical version of Ocean's 11, he would fit right in!

5 out of 5 stars Matt Dusk is the next Sinatra!.......2007-05-15

I absolutely love Matt Dusk! He has a great sounding voice. If you like Michael Buble, you will like Matt Dusk as well.

4 out of 5 stars Applause for Applause!.......2006-07-13

I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!

3 out of 5 stars Lauren Bacall !.......2005-07-09

Based on the classic movie "All About Eve", Lauren Bacall won a Tony for her performance in this great musical.

Best tracks include:

But Alive
Applause [Bonnie Franklin of "One Day At A Time" fame!]
Something Greater

Not all the songs are great, but totally worth the buy!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2004-04-01

Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.

3 out of 5 stars Welcome CD edition of the original Broadway cast album.......2004-01-17

First... a request to people reviewing stage cast albums, Several reviews refer to these recordings as "soundtracks."

WRONG!!!!

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.

Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!

************

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.

Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.

Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.

The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

5 out of 5 stars lauren.......2003-12-04

i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

5 out of 5 stars god moves in a peculiar way.........i am god.............2002-01-17

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

4 out of 5 stars Excerpts.......1999-12-23

This is a collection of excerpts. It is in English and is quite good. The performance of the entire operetta has been discontinued and it is a pity.

5 out of 5 stars Highlights or total Opera?.......1999-11-01

I would like to know if this is highlights from the opera or the total opera.

5 out of 5 stars George at His Best.......2007-03-09

This was made when George was at his peak. From the hilarious tale of making an entire state a prison to the ridiculous airport security (pre-9/11). George is the most brilliant comic out there. His delivery is pin-point accurate and his political musings make a lot of sense. He is the man with a lot of time on his hands who reminds us of things we have no time to normally think about!

5 out of 5 stars another great from carlin.......2005-12-08

let's face it folks, you don't have to agree with everything carlin says in order for it to be funny.the great vocal stylings are intended for you to think about how screwed up things are in this country as well as the world.this album in particular made me laugh out loud,as do most of his albums.but this particular one stands out along side "complaints and grievances" as two in the top 5 of his albums.great stuff here, even if some of it is immature, such as his bit about "farts",but i would expect nothing less from carlin as that is what makes his material work so well, his ability to mix the immature with the down right genius of his material.no other comedian, ever, can vocalize so well as carlin does.if you want some great laughs than i definitely suggest this album.

4 out of 5 stars "The death penalty doesn't mean anything," emits the comic.......2005-08-16

"unless you use it on people who are afraid to die."

There aren't very many comics nowadays that offer both wit as well as intellect with their comedy - humorists like Lewis Black rely on their anger to produce the laugher, whereas Denis Leary, who to an extent provides no-nonsense scenarios, wouldn't be as popular without his vulgar approach toward, well . . . everything.
With George Carlin's interpretation on abortion, capital punishment and "the sanctity of life," so many believe in, I, for one, couldn't help but grin. His material isn't always flat-out roar-making, but his frame of mind during each show will always get to me and, oftimes, make me think, even if it is only meant for hilarity.

Abortion.
Now, I'll be the first to say my mind-set on this issue does not draw parallel with those of pro-life members, but that doesn't mean I support it, either. For my part, I'd like it if teenagers were far more responsible, but you can't always help that, so yeah . . . whatever.
Carlin, however, presents an entirely different angle in this track that directs enmity to the pro-lifers themselves - what a thought, huh? And you can't help but agree with him, too, because if people were so sympathetic for life, why would they kill someone, a doctor no less? Bill Hicks also mentioned this in one of his acts, and no matter what your incline is, you can't fail to see the truth of it.

Speaking of Hicks, in fact, I'd like to take the time to express my appreciate to both Bill Hicks and George Carlin, simply because these two comics are the rare few that I've seen take nothing and give it all; nothing holds them back. From their dark poetry to contemptuous indulgence, it offers laughter that exceeds timorous, clear-cut comedy.

Before parting, I'd like make sure that the capital punishment track is my favorite on this recording, purely due to Carlin's languid ennui to it. Much like Hicks' idea for terminally-ill patients to be put in as stuntmen for motion pictures, I should note, they're both incomparable in their own means.
Anyway, if you're not familiar with George Carlin's comedy, either this recording or Class Clown would be the best to start out with. He has at least pleased me.

4 out of 5 stars Comic intelligence..plus some belligerent arrogance.......2005-05-13

When he's not being an "every conservative/person of faith sucks!" blowhard, there are some deeply hilarious moments and perhaps even insightful observations.

His solution to drug crime? Ignore drug dealers...instead it's capital punishment for the rich bankers that launder their money for them!

HOW to kill the bankers (and other crooks) gets a track of its own (Track 3: Carlin suggests televising it with sponsors..."Burn 'em at the stake..sponsor? Kingsford!"..and using money raised to pay down the national debt). Some of them wouldn't be killed..they'd be sent to "one of the square states..they're easier to fence so it saves the taxpayer's money" (Track 4)

There's also a decent rant about colloquialisms ("Why do we take the cake and not the pie? The pie's easier to carry!") and a long stream of consciousness rant that veers among topics like people who make quote marks in mid-air, bad hair days, the use of those colored ribbons to show support for breast cancer research/diabetes sufferers/Muscular Dystrophy/your cause here, and a "defense" of politicians ("Garbage in/garbage out...If you have selfish, ignorant citizens...you're gonna get selfish ignorant leaders. Term limits ain't gonna do any good..you're just gonna end up with a new group of selfish ignorant Americans....the public sucks!") just to name a few.

The biggest lows come in "Abortion" (Track 1). I understand and recognize that we're really polarized in America on the issue but likening the fact that some fertilized eggs are expelled in a woman's monthly cycle to pro-life groups calling every woman who's had a period "serial killers" is a bit beyond the pale even for those who can laugh at themselves.

BOTTOM LINE:
The most offensive (and often not funny as he does so) tracks are the first 2. After that, there's plenty of gems if you're able to laugh at sacred cows (even if they're your own). I'll second those who say he uses more obscenity than is REALLY needed...it'd be funny WITHOUT the pottymouth. Skip the first 2 and laugh like crazy at the rest.

4 out of 5 stars "Let's kill Mickey Mouse.".......2005-04-24

Pretty good! The first two tracks were crap, just skip over them immediately. The rest was pretty good, though. I like Carlin essential style. Long angry rants, with extreme randomness in between. Although, that was a complaint of mine. This was way different from his older days. He used to really look like he was enjoying it, but it comes out a bit routine these days. The last track was by far the best. A bunch f Carlin rants with no transitions. Pretty darn gosh golly gee whiz funny. Or to put it in my own words: "flough stiy nexcht axwhenin FLOO!!!"

3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

I felt the band The Bus Boys were Kickin' It appeared to me that Eddie Murphy probably got them the gig as it fit his character perfectly. I am STILL not sure why these guys didn't go from busing tables to the Big Time Musically??

4 out of 5 stars Rock'n Roll with heart and sweat.......2005-08-13

My first contact with Busboys was in the movie 48h with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte. A fantastic scene when EM visited a bar. NN represented a racial minority the least to say. During this whole scene was the Busboys music playing, "The boys are back in town". Their frenetic energy with real good rock'n roll lifted the intensed atmosphere. I decided then to buy the record. I was not disappointed.

What a Night... I have had the Honor of seeing the Bus Boys Live. Even before their Music Starred in the Movies! In the 80's and NOW they are the Best! In the Mountians of NM in a place called the Golden Inn in Golden NM. In the middle of one show sitting at the table next to ours sat Willie,Waylon,& Jessie. They had drove up from Texas to see the show that they had been hearing so much about. Way To Go Guys. I recommend that everone should own some of the Bus Boys Music! And if you ever get the chance to see them LIVE do it!!!! In Peace, Maggi

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars Cure for the Blues.......2003-04-25

Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet-79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Addition to my earlier review........2004-07-27

I previously mentioned the Discovery of Stereo Tapes. I was misinformed, and this release is in the Original Mono. Great sound and performances nevertheless. Apologies for unintentionally misleading anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Textbook Session.......2003-10-22

This session deserves to be as popular as the Beach Boys. It represents the "cool" West Coast jazz sound at its creative best--complex yet light, tight, and perpetually fresh. Marty Paich's arrangements serve less as background accompaniment than as a luminous foil to the equally inventive elocutions of the singer. If there's a better solution to the challenge of balancing ensemble cohesiveness with individual expressiveness, I haven't heard it.

As for Mel, there's admittedly less "personality" than on his later sessions, but the gain is a concentrated focus on the song performances--twelve "art objects," each representing the very best that could be squeezed out of composer, arranger, instrumentalists, and vocalist at a given moment. Thinking of Rossetti's description of the sonnet as a "moment's monument," it may be no exaggeration to regard this recording as a monumental achievement. In any case, I'm tickled to have made its discovery, however late.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding Album from Mel's Middle period........1999-08-29

This is one of Mel's best examples of his Art with Superb Marty Paich arrangements. The personell are all top-notch West-Coast musicians of the period, and demonstrate their skills when handling the Charts or Solo's accordingly! The additional Bonus is the Newly discovered Stereo tapes to give these performances an added Dimension!

5 out of 5 stars Don't underestimate those "unknown" Operettas!!.......2005-07-07

This is, as far as I know - the only way of buying the "official" recordings of "The Grand Duke" and "Utopia" - which seem to be otherwise out of print!! Several of the others are not that easy to get either.

In any case - most people getting this set will already have the Mikado, and very probably Pirates and Pinafore for that matter, so you're really getting it for the others.

So just for the record - someone has to say this!

The Mikado is (of course) a wonderful piece, but it enjoys its long running status as the most successful of all the G&S operettas very largely for "extra-musical" reasons. It is visually so wonderful, with all those great authentic costumes, and the whole idea of satirising English institutions by pretending they are Japanese is of course brilliantly funny.

Again, Pirates and Pinafore enjoy a lot of their acclaim simply because we have heard them so often. And at least part of the initial success of these (admittedly very funny and entertaining) pieces was the vogue for "nautical drama" on the popular Victorian stage.

Iolanthe, Ruddigore, and Yoemen are all MUCH stronger musically than any of what another reviewer here keeps calling the "trilogy". Patience, Princess Ida, and the Gondoliers all excel either "nautical" operetta, at least musically, although not, perhaps, the Mikado. And I have had a lot of fun listening to my recording of the Sorcerer - although I think most at least of the other G&S operettas are even more interesting.

As for "Trial by Jury" it is really another thing altogether - but in its kind the most perfect thing either Gilbert or Sullivan had anything to do with!

This leaves Utopia and the Grand Duke.

Both of these were produced after the long running friendship between G&S had soured, and they have been sadly neglected ever since. Utopia is none the less both musically beautiful and very funny, and well worth taking an effort to come to grips with. The main point of the satire (which many commentators and reviewers seem to miss) is the way that the English language and British (especially English) institutions were being adopted, often rather uncritically, by countries around the world (most, but not all, of them members of the British Empire, of course). India is perhaps the country Gilbert had most in mind, but you could set it in any of a dozen other countries. The residual problems this has left in the post-colonial world ensure that this work is still far from dated. In some ways this operetta is about globalisation! What could possibly be LESS dated than that!

The Grand Duke, on the other hand, is a bit of an odd man out - I suppose you still have to say it is the weakest of all the G&S efforts. It's the ONLY one that didn't score a very respectable run on its first outing. Surprisingly, however, if an attempt is made to duplicate the musical and (especially) dialogue cuts that G&S would have done themselves if they had not by this time been at each other's throats all the time, a very entertaining piece can be made of it. I was very agreeably surprised by the Ohio Light Opera recording, which does just that - and I am coming round to the idea that the only thing really wrong with the Duke is that it is too long.

ANYWAY:

For all people (especially callow youth) who remain convinced that G&S only wrote three operettas worth listening to - all I can say is, buy this set, and give the lesser known ones a chance. Make sure you have a libretto in your hands as you listen, of course. It may even just need a single hearing in some cases, but otherwise, be patient. In the meantime, you really cannot have any conception of what you are missing.

5 out of 5 stars A few details.......2004-03-28

This 24-CD album consists of 12 plastic cases, each with a thin booklet giving background and plot summaries for the works on its 2 enclosed CD's. Most of the album consists of 15 operettas, 2 of which (Cox and Box, The Zoo) have texts not by Gilbert and 7 of which (The Sorcerer, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, Yeomen of the Guard, Utopia Limited, The Grand Duke) omit most of the spoken dialogue. Before listening to any of these operettas that you don't know well, you'll want to obtain a copy of its text so you can read along and not miss any of the words or the wit.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful set, if a little inconsistent at times........2003-07-07

If you thought that the Sargent set of G&S opera recordings was gargantum enough, then this D'Oyly Carte cycle is even more gargantum. Although it is more expensive (because of the four extra operas that the Sargent cycle did not include), this complete 24-CD set is like a joy to behold. There is a debate as to whether this is better than the Sargent cycle, but I like to think that this is a delight from first disc to last, because of the idiomatic sense of polish that these recordings seem to have, and are given a life that makes them able to breathe well. This is all thanks to Isidore Godfrey and Royston Nash's conducting. I know that the performances may not be entirely consistent (this is evident when you compare the performance and recording quality of Mikado and Pirates with those of Gondoliers and Pinafore), but this is only a matter of personal preference. The 1960s performances were given more sumptuous and well-detailed recordings than the 1970s recordings, made when the performing style was not so fresh. But anyway, I still think that this is definitely a good buy for anyone who loves G&S. Even with the consistency of Sargent's cheaper EMI set, I would still say: do go ahead to invest in the set because of the liveliness and style in this complete G&S cycle that Sargent never (hardly ever) tackles. The only thing is: I would also like to suggest complementing it with the 1957 Decca D'Oyly Carte recordings of Mikado and Pirates, recently released by the Sounds on CD label, so that these recordings can do justice to the enormous spirit of these operas.

The problem with this soundtrack is the same with others I've purchased: You don't get all the songs on the soundtrack that you heard on the movie. There were at least two songs I heard on the movie that I bought this soundtrack for. There aren't on it. What a waste. The song playing while the bikers were in the bar and pulled a gun on the waitress was great and also wasn't on the CD. Since I didn't know the name of the song or the artist I couldn't know whether it was on the soundtrack or not. Now this soundtrack sets on the shelf. I will eventually sell it, if I can find anyone willing to pay good money for this joke of a soundtrack.
