Great blues guitarists are about tone, mood, and style. Being nimble helps, but intensity and passion more often exist between the notes. Rick Holmstrom revels in this abundance on his first album in five years. A West Coast veteran who backed harp greats William Clarke, Billy Boy Arnold, and Rod Piazza, Holmstrom can swing with the best of them. But 2002's controversial drum-loop-powered Hydraulic Groove showed the guitarist expanding blues boundaries rather then repeating past sounds. His fourth solo release retreats from those techno trappings, concentrating on a tough yet loose vibe driven by a stripped-down band of bassist/sax player Jeff Turmes and drummer Stephen Hodges, best known for his work with Tom Waits. Holmstrom kicks off with one of the album's five fiery instrumentals, slinging out resilient, ragged lines that build until finally exploding into the immortal riff from "Rumble," a nod to Link Wray, also no stranger to gristly tone. There's a sure sense of balance and tension as Holmstrom expertly weaves his gripping solos between the taut rhythm section's own dusky rumble. John Lee Hooker, another master of atmosphere, is the reference for "'77 Red V8" and a raw, instrumental take on Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"--one of only two covers--gets an unusually sleazy treatment thanks in part to Turmes' strip-club-style sax. Holmstrom is an effective, unfussy vocalist with an understated croon perfect for this album's dusky quality. But it's his guitar that really sings on Late in the Night, as it takes us on a rain-drenched stroll to the dodgy side of town. --Hal Horowitz

On this album, jazz-cabaret singer-songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway pays tribute to her hometown Chicago's best-known musical export, the blues-though her take is largely devoid of that genre's pared-down grit, instead exploring two of its offshoots: a sophisticated, elusive melancholy and upbeat, horn-heavy swing jazz. Callaway's penchant for the latter is evidenced by the jumping opening track, "Swingin' Away the Blues" and the percolating "Lover Come Back to Me" (on which she integrates her trademark scat singing). A "blue" mood is evoked on, for instance, "Blue Moon" and a not-entirely-convincing take on Sondheim's "No One Is Alone." But Callaway is also among the rare performers in the cabaret scene to write some of her own material, and she obliges here as well, with good results on the humorous "The I'm-Too-White-to-Sing-the-Blues Blues" (on which she emulates brass instruments) and "Hip to Be Happy." --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
Callaway's new album is a dynamic and stirring collection of American Songbook classics, mixed with potent and witty original songs. The recording contains several jazz standards, but with arrangements and interpretations that are far from standard.
Customer Reviews:
Could we please give this 12 stars? One for each cut! .......2007-05-13
Ann Hampton Callaway is beyond superb. No quibble possible. So is Telarc Records. When you combine the two, the result is so rich you just want to climb right in to your speakers and absorb the wonderful delicious sounds being produced.
Ms. Callaway is possessed of a huge voice, with a huge range; she can belt, she can growl, she can croon. Throughout, her diction is perfect, thank goodness, because she really pays attention to the words, which are entirely too good not to be understood and appreciated. Her classical and operatic training stand her in good stead, believe me. Furthermore, she's also a heck of a piano player, and even writes a lot of her own songs. She's truly a song-writer's singer.
The title of the CD may be "Blues in the Night", but not all blues are sad. This is the jumpin', groovin', up-tempo (most of the time) version. First up is Swinging Away the Blues which really jumps! Ms. Callaway's voice soars above the Diva Jazz Orchestra that's playing behind her in this joyous romp. Blue Moon is an oldie that gets an up-to-the-minute treatment that entirely justifies its long existence as a blues classic. Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most (oh, can't it just!) is followed by a very up-tempo Lover Come Back to Me.
Callaway's sister Liz joins her in a bouyant duet on Stormy Weather/When The Sun Comes Out. Groovy! Listen to the bass at the beginning. Scrumptious. It was sheer genius to pair the two songs as well as the two singers! Their voices are totally different, yet they blend well, and the harmonizing is fantastic.
Among her own compositions are The I'm-Too-White-to-Sing-the-Blues Blues in which she pays tribute to some of the famous blues singers of the past, and the scattish duet with herself, Hip to be Happy.
There's one of the greatest story songs ever, It's All Right With Me; and did you know that Stephen Sondheim wrote blues? (And why not, he wrote nearly everything else?) No One is Alone is very nearly the perfect antidote to a breaking heart. Willow Weep For Me, the title song Blues in the Night, and The Glory of Love, are classic oldies but oh-so-mellow goodies.
When the Diva Jazz Orchestra isn't backing her up, her regulars are very present: Ted Rosenthal, piano, Christian McBride, bass, Lewis Nash, drums, and David Gilmore, guitar. Anat Cohen on tenor sax, and Jami Dauber on the trumpet, (both of Diva) get a few extra licks here and there.
If you're suffering from the pangs of a lost love and want some company, try this CD. Chances are it'll roust you right out of those blues! You'll be glad it did.
Blues at the top!.......2007-05-12
Excellent CD. Ann Hampton Callaway is a first class singer, no doubt.
The best "Blue Moon" ever! Probably her best CD till now!
Blues in the Night.......2007-01-03
Great selection of music. Callaway performs with great respect for lyric and melody. Good listening.
HELLO, GRAMMY!!.......2006-11-18
This is Callaway's finest achievement -- and there have been many. It came out last summer, but talk about the bloom still on the rose five months later (11/21/06)!
Her soulful rendition of "Blue Moon" and the title track will remind you of "Dreamgirls"' Effie White (who says white girls can't wail?), she doubles your pleasure with sister Liz Callaway on a sensational "Stormy Weather/When the Sun Comes Out" medley, and her "It's All Right with Me" may have you asking, "Norah Who?"
"
She'll also have you laughing and swinging over her own witty composition, "The I'm-Too-White-To-Sing-The Blues Blues," and then turn around and break your heart with a wondrous rendition of Sondheim's hymnlike "No One Is Alone" that even the great Cleo Laine would envy.
If she doesn't get Grammified for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, the Grammy voters should be assassinated. This is a classic album!
Best New Release - 2006.......2006-09-03
Another gem from AHC, diva. It's no wonder she's won NYC's own "American Idol for the Pros" (the MAC Award) an astonishing 14 times! Miss Callaway's recently released "Blues in the Night" gifts listeners with an impressive range of songs encompassing depth and breadth of the human experience.
She has, to say the Least, mastered vocal performance. Her magnificent vocal quality, interpretations, phrasing, intonation, time and choices are always spot on. Her range is, as the youngsters say, sick. Just a few of the highlights of this project are Cole Porter's "It's All Right With Me," Stephen Sondheim's "No One Is Alone," as well as several new AHC originals! And, the hauntingly beautiful "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most."
The title cut gives those of us who didn't get to see her Tony-nominated performance in "Swing" a chance to dig "Blues in the Night" over and over again. And speaking of Broadway...the duet here with sister, Broadway favorite Liz Callaway, rates a Bravo-Standing-Ovation after each listening. This CD recharges the soul's spirit, so often chipped away by day-to-day challenges and, of course, the blues.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17
If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.
Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.
Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18
Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.
A treasury.......2005-11-06
As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'
Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26
This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

By now a seasoned master of late-night amour and heartbreak, Vandross upped the creative ante somewhat with this 1985 release. A concept about the rise and fall of a relationship, The Night I Fell in Love is classic Luther, down to the homage to pop-soul's past (an aching cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin") and the endless promise of love's potential. Always one of the best and most understated male singers in black pop, Luther is possibly at his peak here. It's impossible to keep the emotions in check on such odes to love as "If Only for One Night" or the finger-popping "My Baby Comes Home." --Amy Linden

I love everything Luther ever made ,but if you want to see what made him great buy this cd.
Just so romantic, and endearing, this sound........2007-01-26
Wonderful way to end a long day with someone you love. He was one of a kind.
Another Luther masterpiece.......2006-12-14
By 1985 Luther Vandross was the premier ballader in R&B. This album spawned four Billboard R&B singles in "'Til My Baby Comes Home," "It's Over Now," "Wait for Love," and "If Only for One Night." It also featured "Creepin" but Luther's the best at ballads in particular If Only For One Night.
Maybe Luther's best.......2006-10-21
The fourth album in what I like to call"The getting to know Luther Trilogy".Four albums that define and sum up this man.We know as "Luther"
1.Never Too Much 1981
2.Forever,For Always,For Love 1982
3.Busy Body 1983
4.The Night I fell in Love 1985
I could never pick a fav.Luther album. But This one and Busy Body are my favs.
I was 4 years old when this came out.Luther was one the few artists as a child that I recognized. My parents played this and Busy Body alot.So those two albums introduced me Luther.
Til' my Baby comes home-Song about waiting on your baby.Every girl coming onto you.But No.My girl is plenty.
The Night I fell in love-Funky drum programmed and bass playing by my boy
Marcus Miller.Everybody has a time when they first fell in love.So u could relate and reminisce wit' Luther.
If only for one night-Longing,needing,wanting to be wit that woman badly.
Secs,minutes,hours,one day,one night.
Creepin-Stevie wonder remake with a jazzed out appeal. That girl is in everywhere I go.Dreams,Thoughts,Feelings
It's over Now-Funk Jam with some more heavy bass lines from Marcus Miller.
Woman cheating on you with not one but two guys. It's over baby.
Wait for love-If you can't find love.Don't worry.Don't rush.It'll find you.
My Sensitivity-Emotions take control sometimes when you like or love somebody so much.
The other side of the world-you never know where you'll find love.Right under your nose.
I have to say this is the last fully R&B album Luther would do.Venturing into pop in his future albums.
This is the Luther I'll always remember.Jheri Curled,Goatee.
RIP Luther

Classic blues set.......2007-05-29
Here is the legendary Albert King demonstrating why he managed to influence artists like Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton. If the word "stinging" applies to blues playing, then let it settle-in here: Stormy Monday Blues, I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town, a couple of numbers associated with other "Kings", San-Hozay (Freddie King) and You Upset Me Baby (B. B. King).
San Hozay (wish they kept that one up for at least four minutes!), Crosscut Saw and Oo-ee-Baby (the closer) are uptempo and are as cleanly performed as they are mixed. To me, blues *today* is a bit bottom-heavy, and the lead vocal lacks presence. Listen to this historic set and learn what a true blues set and *recording* should sound like.
RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "ALBERT WAS THE GREATEST WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY, BUT REMEMBER THE RECORDING IS FROM 1968!".......2007-02-13
If you're one of "Shaq's, The King Of The World Blues Reviewer's" loyal fans, you already know that Albert King is my all-time favorite electric blues guitarist. If you're not one of my existing fans, but want to know the "truth" about all the criteria that you should consider before spending your hard earned "blues" dollars, you should thank me after this review! What you should know is, that this "live" performance was recorded on June 27, 1968. It was released in 1990. Was Albert great that night? Hell yea! He was great! But... the recording technology was from 1968! If you're a modern day blues fan, that hasn't had experience with how great Albert was, you may be disappointed by the lack of 21st century sound quality. But that is not Albert's fault! If you're an electric blues, collector and aficionado, with experience in the difference in technology over time; then, this CD would be rated a 5 star. But simply because of the lack of clarity, I rate this a 4 star. Albert is the "KING" of kings, of blues. If you're willing to really turn up your CD, or if you are satisfied with simply hearing the greatest "string bender" of all-time, in lesser sound quality, than is available today, this is a classic CD for you.
May be Wednesday's Show was better.......2006-10-23
This is a good blues album that show cases one of the greats doing a typical live show. While I love Albert King and live blues music something is missing for me on this album. Sound quality is not great and is backing band is nothing special on this album. Check out In Sessions or Live Wire for better material for Albert King, one the great blues guitarist of all time.
F for sound .......2006-01-25
Well this is a total F for sound. I have 3 dif 3 cd players, home, port, and car, and yes they are good ones, car is a Q45 with a Bose. I bought this CD because of the reviews I read here, what is everyone smoking? or is there not that good of stuff avail from Albert? I don't own any other CD's, but I do know about him from the SRV Sessions VHS I have had for a few years, and it sounds pretty good.
This CD sounds like a taper recorded it, from that last row in the back or something. I have both SF CD's, the both sound the same.
Can someone email me please and let me know what Albert King CD's. If any, have good clear sound.
What I have that is great for Live shows is Cream Reunion DVD and CD, and Roger Watters in the Flesh DVD and CD, great sound.
Everybody Can Enjoy.......2005-07-01
Some guys play guitar to impress girls. They play some cool sounding licks and are rewarded with oohs and aahs. Other serious guitar players impress other guitar players, but their talent surpasses the mortal mind, and they might not appeal to a wide audience. Albert King is a guitar players' guitar player that everyone can enjoy.
More than a few of history's great guitar players have admired Albert King's talent. Yet his "soul" (as he calls it), song selection and sex-appeal delight blues fans everywhere. If you're a serious guitar player or just a blues fan who has never picked up an instrument, then you'll like Albert King. He still has a following from a brief trip to Argentina shortly before his death. Even Latinos like this guy!
And as with all blues, Albert King is at his best LIVE! On stage where he is energized by the encouragement of the crowd, with no suit-wearing producer calling the shots, the Night Prowler truly shines.
If you like the blues, you'll LOVE (!!!!) this CD. The song selection is good. Albert King is hot. The crowd is enthusiastic. What a great recording of a great performer.

The Robert Shaw Chorale, the "gold standard" of quality choral music, sings much loved carols, with some lesser-known pieces as well. Some are a cappella; some include a full orchestral accompaniment. My favorites on this CD are "We Three Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," and "I Saw Three Ships."
The quintessential Christmas recording.......2005-12-09
This recording seems to elicit universal and heartfelt praise. Who am I to dispute that? The performance is terrific, just as described by the other Amazon reviewers, no doubt about it.
However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!
A Top List Christmas CD.......2004-12-28
I bought this cd long ago, and have enjoyed it immensely each year. It is the perfect blend of celebration and meditation. Orchestra and choir combine in four distinct groupings, and a capella arrangements complete the masterful collection. The orchestral arrangements will make the hairs on your neck stand up, and your stomach quiver with all the excitement you ever felt as a child at Christmas. Adeste Fidelis is performed as few other ensembles have ever come close. The a capella arrangements will all, without exception, be on your yearly list of must-hear holiday arrangements. Truly a top list Christmas CD, essential for every family who celebrates this feast.
The best.......2004-01-02
I own approximately 35 Christmas choral CDs - including choirs and groups such as the Cambridge Singers and the King Singers. I also own two Christmas albums with Robert Shaw and the Atlantic symphony. This performance with the Robert Shaw Chorale is old but it is still my favorite. The arrangements are magnificent, the sound is brilliant, and the choir and orchestra are precise with wonderful volume control. Buy and enjoy!
How do you describe perfection?.......2003-12-14
This is my favorite Christmas CD. Nothing comes close. I thoroughly enjoyed learning much of the music in high school choir over 30 years ago. The music has never left me. The four medleys are the arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett titled "The Many Moods of Christmas". The arrangements seem to have a freshness about them even after listening numerous times.
Interspersed with the medleys are a cappella carols.
All of this music is wonderfully performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, the a cappella selections recorded in 1957 and the medleys in 1963.
Four decades have proven that this is the standard in choral music. The clarity of text, the richness of tone, the beauty of harmony combine to present the message of Christmas in the manner that only music can do.
These words are no surprise to those familiar with choral music in the United States. If you are not so familiar, but would like to enjoy Christmas music at its most beautiful, you can do no better than acquiring this CD.

Robert Redford's fable of a cynical, young, white war veteran (Matt Damon) learning the perfect golf swing--and the meanings of life--from a mysterious black caddy (Will Smith) is typically rich in subtexts, from racial discrimination to armchair existential philosophy. As she did for the period dramaThe Cider House Rules, English composer Rachel Portman imbues Vance with an American sense of time and place. Bookended by the bluesy jazz of Fats Waller, Mugsy Spanier, and Duke Ellington, Portman's elegant orchestral score is rich in powerful brass and string-driven melody and emotional nuances. Portman once again displays a strong affinity for the plaintive resolve and emotionally longing colors of Aaron Copland's most familiar works, and there are moments here that subtly evoke passages of that composer's Lincoln Portrait. It's a fine irony of modern film that one of Copland's spiritual heirs and most effective practitioners of his essentially male American musical ethos is a soft-spoken Englishwoman. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A soundtrack as wonderful as the movie!.......2005-08-17
When I first saw the picture, the music was one of the two bigger impacts it had on me (cinematography being the other). I had one of those experiences where as soon as the credits were finished I was already planning on purchasing the soundtrack. Problem is the average CD store did not hold it. Lucky for all of us there is Amazon.com!
The music composed by Rachel Portman is nothing short of wonderful! Very American in its orchestration and has often reminded me of the score to JFK (John Williams) & The Natural (Randy Newman/ironically another Redford film). From the scenes where Damon's on the golf course and the camera performs its classic Hitchcock maneuver, to the humorous driving sound as Theron's character takes on the city councilmen, this score proves to be one that must be cherished by all movie music goers.
This is a soundtrack that can inspire people with imagination and heighten the experience of outdoor activities. I myself have played this score while hiking back home and it has performed beautifully. When I play this in my free time it has allowed me to drift away from troubles and distress.
As for the tracks that aren't Portman's composition, they are equally enjoyable. The sound of Muggsy Spanier, Ellington, & Fats Waller are just pure boogie, woogie, oogie know what I mean? Makes you wanna swing.
It's a good soundtrack, one that I am lucky to have in my horde. If you can get it, I highly recommend it.
Why is this soundtrack so hard to find?.......2004-02-18
It goes without saying that a good score can either brilliantly enhance or possibly downright destroy a movie. With the film "The Legend of Bagger Vance" you have a beautiful story accented by beautiful scenery and beautiful period sets and costumes. Anything less than a beautiful score could lessen the appeal and, ultimately, the certain quality that could make this good movie great. Rachel Portman has developed a reputation for making okay movies unforgettable. Any less of a score could have ruined "The Cider House Rules" or even more so "Chocolat". Ms. Portman's score is a perfect example of how image and sound should come together to create something beautiful. In addition to the evocative and nostalgic opening fanfare-like theme, Ms. Portman welds together at least three other prominent themes, as well as a virtual abundance of recurring motifs. But, unlike her recent score CD for "The Human Stain", this album contains a much more varied mix of music that, most times, leaves the listener simply wanting more, but at the same time feeling totally satisfied. Unfortunately, if this review has successfully whet your appetite for this album, all you have to do now is find a copy for a reasonable amount of money. This soundtrack is highly reccommended, but good luck finding it.
The Legend of Bagger Vance.......2003-02-20
Great soundtrack, very relaxing and emotional. Very pleased with the cd music, but disappointed in what I had to pay for it. Also, the seller represented it as NEW and it was not. It had been resealed!
This soundtrack was worthy of an oscar........2002-11-07
When I saw this film I remember thinking, "what an extraordinary soundtrack" and I immediately went out and got the cd. And now a few years later it almost always is in my cd player. I love, love, love soundtracks and this is a homerun to me. I don't remember what the competititon was for the oscars that year but I wish it would have won. I don't even remember if it got a nomination. If you like Randy Newman's work, Aaron Copeland and maybe Hans Zimmer, you will like this cd. She did a really wonderful job. I wish I knew more about the composer.
This is my favorite CD.......2001-11-04
I purchased this CD to find a music selection for my daughter's skating routine. I had previously purchased "Cider House Rules" soundtrack and thoroughly enjoyed it, so we purchased this after listening to the samples on Amazon.com. This soundtrack has to be the best one I have heard! I watched the movie after I had listened to the CD, and I must say that Rachel Portman's music brings the movie to a whole new emotional level. I, too, wonder why this was not nominated for an Oscar. Rachel Portman has that special gift to communicate through her music. I look forward to purchasing more of her works.

RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "ALBERT WAS THE GREATEST, BUT MAKE SURE YOU PAY ATTENTION TO SHAQ'S REVIEW!".......2007-02-13
What you should know is, that this "live" performance was recorded on June 26, 1968.
Listened with Sennheiser 595's, the best that I have found, had 555 for a couple years they are nice too, but cant touch 595's, pay the dif and see, er I mean hear.
Awesome live blues guitar.......2002-08-29
Albert was at his best live...This is awesome guitar playing and Albert's singing is awesome as well. One listen to this and one realizes that Albert King is truly THE master of the blues guitar. ALL songs are excellent! "Don't throw your love on me so strong" is the VERY BEST BLUES GUITAR PLAYING I've ever heard and that includes SRV, Hendrix and the rest of King's followers. He was the BEST!!! Thursday Night and Live Wire/Blues Power are also MUSTS!!!
Hot Blues!.......2002-08-16
Albert King recorded this CD on Wednesday June 26, 1968, one day prior to his more popular and better known release, "Thursday Night In San Francisco". This disc represents the first day that Albert performed at the Filmore as the headliner. Prior to that time, he had appeared as the opener for Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Albert's "best" performance that evening, as well as the next day, (according to Stax anyway) was originally released by Stax on the "Live Wire/Blues Power" CD. The songs contained on both, the Wednesday and the Thursday CD were thought to be a cut below and were not included. Fortunately for us, Stax took another look at the material, albeit 22 years later, and released the remainder of the material as it occurred on two separate discs. In order to gain a full understanding as to what occurred on those two nights, King fans should purchase all three of these excellent recordings. As with the other two discs, King's performance is outstanding.
Live proof that Albert King's blues guitar voice is unique........1998-12-24
This album is typically overlooked by blues fans, even Albert fans, but it's a note-perfect document of how to deliver a live blues performance. Albert has such total control of the blues guitar vernacular unique to him that he can ply a range of emotions through a subtlety of pitch, dynamics, and timing that is probably unmatched. The uninitiated listener mistakes this control for repetitiveness, but the flawlessness of Albert's delivery makes his blues guitar voice undeniably compelling nonetheless. All the evidence is on this record.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Solo Debut.......2006-09-12
Lindemann's musicality, technique, and showmanship is evident
here on a very high level. Of particular interest is
his very effective use of plunger to subtly modify his sound.
The Gershwin preludes are especially entertaining. He uses
the extreme high high register a bit more frequently than
I would wish, but with high range this strong, it's easy to
see why he would want to use it.
This is, overall, extremely musical playing. Minor quibbles
can be made about intonation in some spots, but the listener
will forgive these when the playing is so infectious and
the tone so fine. I found myself laughing on occasion because
I was having so much fun listening to what the artist was doing
with these pieces. It is apparent that Lindemann and his fine
accompanists were having a great time with this music. Buy this
disc and you will too.
First rate album!.......2006-03-06
Jens Lindemann really makes a name for himself with this album. Anyone who enjoys trumpet music will probably enjoy this. Jens is a true master at mixing jazz, pop and classical styles seamlessly. This album has a good mix of classical and jazz hits to suit anyone's taste. After first hearing Jens' beautiful tone when he played with the Canadian Brass, I was eagerly awaiting his first solo album. I had no idea his talent was so immense until I heard some of the songs on this album. His arrangement of Chopin's Etude No. 2 requires circular breathing for the entire piece. I think his variations on Amazing Grace are the best I've ever heard. There is even some insanely high stuff for those of you who like a little squealing now and then! ;)
Phenomenal Player!.......2005-12-01
Jens is one of the few trumpet players out there that can move with me a single note. There are some great tracks on this CD that showcase his technical brilliance, but most of the tracks show off his lyrical ability, especially the first track. My only personal complaint was with the choice of some of the 'pop' tracks - they just aren't really my kind of music, but Jens plays everything with wonderful clarity and fluidity (as expected).
