As an interpreter, Nancy LaMott shunned extremes. Whatever clouds may have darkened the sky, she always sounded as if they couldn't possibly lead to a thunderstorm--only a gentle rain that would eventually becomes, well, shine. And so her tribute to lyricist Johnny Mercer typically avoids emotional extremes, exploring instead subtle in-betweens. The low-key version of "Moon River" that starts things off is indicative of this album's subdued mood. LaMott was well aware she wasn't a swinger, so her take on finger-snapping classics such as "Accentuate the Positive" (instead of the song's usual spelling "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate") and "That Old Black Magic" is sensitive rather than jazzily buoyant. Her minimalist approach reaps maximum rewards on "P.S. I Love You" and "On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe," on which she basically engages in duets with carefully selected instruments (an acoustic guitar and a stand-up bass, respectively). --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
My encounter with Nancy.......2007-03-23
In the winter of 1994, having been a Nancy Lamott fan for a number of years, I was thrilled to find out that she was appearing at a now long departed (and greatly lamented) cabaret atop the Bellvue Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. It was a intimate room with great sound and no bad seats. I was lucky enough to get a table for my wife and me that placed us no more than 6 feet from the small stage. About halfway through the performance, Nancy asked for requests. I sheepishly blurted out, "How about the 'Autumn Leaves/When October Goes' medley". She gave me a knowing smile and then proceeded to quietly send the room to a place we had never been before. It was magical. Shortly thereafter, the performance ended and I waited a short time to thank Nancy as she spoke to some folks near the stage. Their conversation went on a bit longer than I expected and my wife and the rest of our party began to get impatient. So, I left without the chance to thank her. After all, I'd see her the next time she was in the area. Well, as we all know, there wouldn't be a next time. All too soon, she was gone. I'll always regret that small impatient moment. Please don't you let yourself regret this chance to hear a once in a lifetime talent. That magical medley is on this album. Before some idiot lets her recordings go out of print again or the "downloadistas" take over what's left of the recording business, buy this CD and every other one of hers you can get your hands on. She was touched by God and now she's with him. But a small echo of her essence remains in these recordings.
Wonderful!.......2007-01-21
This is my first Nancy LaMott CD, and since I got it yesterday, I have played it over and over! What a beautiful voice! The entire album is top-notch.
If only I were a poet - .......2006-02-06
because only such a one could put into words how beautiful this woman's voice is. I heard her for the first time today, courtesy of WNYC. I immediately purchased the entire album. I am in awe and can not believe I have not heard her music before. These songs are not just versions of the same standards you've heard before; it will be as if you're hearing these songs for the first time. It is the greatest of tragedies that such a wonderfully gifted person was cut down so young. How thankful we can be that her legacy lives on in this beautiful music.
Weep with joy! What an album!.......2006-01-16
It does not seem possible that one could sing with greater confidence and conviction. Also, Lamott and her accompaniest Christopher Marlowe are a wonderful team, evincing taste, originality and willingness to make standard and not-so-standard songs their own. Her reading of "Autumn Leaves/I hate to see October Go" is heart rending. There is not a bad song on this album.
The great female vocalist shines!.......2005-02-11
Nancy Lamott was the great female vocalist and she shines on this set of classic songs.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

New breed of Male Vocalist.......2007-06-14
Good production and selection of material. Although not as popular as Michael Buble, Caldwell has the technique down well. I'm not familiar with his other recordings, so this may be an exception to his usual style.
Weary.......2006-02-08
I grow weary of those who complain that Caldwell "sounds like a Sinatra". Bobby shares the same background as Eckstine, and Torme' in that they were Jazz musicians before they hit it as singers. Of course their intonation is improvisational, but anyone listening to Indian Summer (my favorite) on this CD and thinking that Sinatra would sound the same is poorly mistaken. Bobby has good "ideas" in the jargon of the Jazz musician. Don't fault him for that.
Great Crooner!.......2005-09-28
Bobby Caldwell has come the closest I can find to a modern Frank Sinatra. His voice is smooth and full!
The choice of material on this cd is great and Bobby's voice does all of them justice!
I would encourage everyone to give this one a try, especially those out there who like Frank, Mel Torme or any of that sort.
Superb Standards Album by a Fabulous Soul Singer.......2005-07-25
On the heels of Bobby Caldwell's knockout live big band performance on "Jazz Central" on the BET Jazz Cable Channel, this studio CD arrived with most of the same songs and arrangements intact from that sizzling hour-long TV appearance. So I bought it. And what a magnificent CD, it is. We're seen a bevy of singing stars doing their "standards" albums to extend their careers, but many have fallen short of the mark because they floated on the surface of those beloved Tin Pan Alley songs. Not so with Caldwell, he gets INSIDE of each song, physically and musically, with the same 'flare for the dramatic' that helped Sinatra, Bennett, Darin and others sell these songs. And Bobby's great big band and exceptional arrangements elevate this CD into the 'Must Have' category for any music fan. My Pieces D'Resistance: "Beyond the Sea", "Come Rain or Come Shine", and "The Best is Yet to Come".
Not only that, this is Caldwell's second CD in this genre following another fabulous big band "standards" CD called "Blue Condition" from 1996, which contains killer versions of "I Concentrate on You", "Don't Worry About Me" and "Street of Dreams" as well as a "Girl I Dream About" that is simply sensational.
Look for the repeated telecasts of that BET Jazz Central appearance and you'll want both "Come Rain or Come Shine" AND "Blue Condition" too. Bobby has continued to develop his style, since his R&B mega-hit "What You Won't Do For Love". This blue-eyed soul meister is a natural for the 'standards' and he doesn't compromise his voice and phrasing to imitate anyone. Even Alicia Keyes and Lou Rawls gush over Bobby's performances. And don't miss Bobby on the concert circuit, especially with his former protege' smooth alto saxist Dave Koz.
What a dandy album!.......2004-01-05
In this album, old and good songs seem to have been revived by Bobby's excellent vocals which touch a chord within us. when I listen to Frank.S.(such as "The Rat Pack"), it reminds me of old&good days of USA, but when I listen to this album, I feel something "today" on the gorgeous bigband jazz tunes, even though some of these songs use the same arrangement as Frank's original style's. When Bobby sings these masterpieces, these become Bobby's love songs, his vocal sounds like the picture of his heart there. So I feel the breath from all the songs. It lets this album be something contemporary ....... That's amazing! This album shows us he is a really superb vocalist.Good songs are succeeded like Bobby, like telling story.... What a dandy album he made!

Customer Reviews:
I love this CD.......2006-02-02
I have been an Andre Previn fan as long as I have been playing the piano--he is an amazing talent. I have also been a Sylvia McNair fan for years. And after hearing this CD and the "Sure Thing-The Jerome Kern Songbook" CD, I am a David Finck fan, too.
Sylvia has a beautiful voice, but singing for her is not about showing off her range, it's about the words and the mood, and so she sings with amazing feeling. Andre Previn's piano is brilliant, as always, and this album is an inspiration for all of us who accompany other musicians. His style and talent come through while never overshadowing the words from Sylvia.
Some songs I enjoy more than others. For some reason, "Two Ladies In The Shade Of The Banana Tree" just doesn't work for me. But I love "Stormy Weather", "I Wonder What Became Of Me?", "Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea", and "This Time The Dream's On Me".
I highly recommend this CD, though my favorite Previn/Finck/McNair collaboration will continue to be "Sure Thing-The Jerome Kern Songbook." I wish there were more albums like this from the three of them.
Beautful, subtle, sweet, delicate, gentle, and studied..........2003-12-12
When I read the review accusing Sylvia McNair of being tired on this CD, I knew I had to hear it. Upon hearing Miss McNair perform Rachmaninoff's Vocalise with the Baltimore Symphony, the case was closed: her voice simply flew so effortlessly, yet so powerfully, 'way above the orchestra, as if descendant from the heavens, that she won my admiration at once and forever.
On this CD she brings her classical training to music that is already well-sprinkled with emotion of its own as well as whatever we listeners confer upon it. So the purity and sweetness of her voice make for a real treat, a rather more subtle performance that isn't as charged in the manner of Barbra Streisand, to name someone I'm familiar with and also enjoy.
Miss McNair is easier to listen to, and her simple style nonetheless has great warmth, gentility, and-dare I say this in the face of modern culture-a certain diginity that I have to admit I find utterly refreshing. Maybe I'm getting older, but subtle details are beginning to capture me best.
If you tend to find her tired, may I suggest very kindly that your ears need a little rest? There's so much noise in the world today that the simple, quiet beauty of music is all too often masked by the din of artists who simply follow the tides.
Miss McNair is here to stay, at least in my CD player. I'd hop a plane just to hear and see her live. And she's beautiful, too. Tell her Russ sent you...
Pure voices finish first.......2000-12-04
The work of this cd reveals the true talent of McNair. Her voice is relatively unadorned, pure, full, and listening will charge emotions with electricity. The piano and bass she sings with support her voice well while not overpowering her exceptional talent. I regret she has not continued to produce more as promised in her cd notes. Her instrument should not be soley used in her many classical recordings.
Sylvia sure has a voice that is bound to please you.......2000-10-25
This is the second Sylvia Mcnair cd I have bought. It is a continuation of the Jerone Kern cd that I first bought. What a wonderful voice Sylvia possess. I can't believe anyone can have such a beautiful voice. It must be a God send.
Sylvia sure knows how to sing a love song. Her style is such a relaxed style. She sings with very little effort or so it seems. Her voice is not an over powering voice, but one that will make you think of love and romance. I do wish there were some more of this type of cds with Sylvia's beautiful voice.
The only concern I have for this cd was the repertoire. It could have been better. I was familiar with some of the songs performed here, but there was also some songs performed that I didn't know or particularly like. I know it's hard to please everyone concerning repertoire.
I Would Like To Recommend This CD
Sing out, Sylvia!.......2000-05-17
Having enjoyed McNair's light soprano in performance of classical material and being an Arlen fan, I thought this album would be ideal listening. I was sorely dissapointed. McNair sounds exhausted. Not ragged or raw, but tired, completely lacking in energy. On many of the tracks she is barely audible. And if there's any acting going on here, it's not readily apparent. For true cross-over heaven, check out Kiri TeKanawa's Gershwin and Irving Berlin albums, and Dawn Upshaw's Rodgers and Hart tribute and her album entitled "I Wish it So."

Failed Ideas.......2004-12-09
Maureen McGovern is a national treasure. Her Naughty Baby CD to me is the 2nd coming of Christ. By comparison Out of this World is quite disappointing. Mostly either Harold Arlen or MM's uninspiring interpretations and/or Renzi's arrangements don't seem to suit MM on this CD. The drums and percusion are sometimes schlocky. The screechy sax is always terrible. Also not working for me are the electric keyboard/synthesizer, the electric guitar and the cello. Even Renzi's piano playing is sometimes a let down. Jay Leonhart's great bass work seems to be the only thing that you can depend on here. Did MM do this to herself or is Renzi mainly responsible? Spend your money instead on: Naughty Baby, The Music Never Ends, The Pleasure of his Company and Christmas With MM. All wonderful music.
Simply Exquisite.......2003-12-01
I'd forgotten what a beautiful, supple vocal instrument McGovern has. Here, she sings blues- and jazz-flavored tunes, torchy ballads, and more--all Harold Arlen--including "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Over the Rainbow," "Let's Take a Walk Around the Block," "The Man That Got Away" and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Her "Optimistic Voices" (from The Wizard of Oz) is worth the price of the entire CD. It is simply exquisite, like a fine jewel, polished and gleaming with feeling.

ECJO - Come Rain or Come Shine, just buy it!.......2006-01-06

A rule of thumb for any artistic endeavor is that a sequel is seldom as good as the original. The qualifier "seldom" must be used because there are occasional exceptions to the rule. As luck would have it, here comes one now-the Emerald City Jazz Orchestra's remarkable followup to its debut album, Alive and Swingin'! (SMP 0004). In reviewing that earlier enterprise, I noted that "section work is immaculate, soloists are superb, and the rhythm section simply kicks ass." I happy to report that nothing has changed.
Well, that's not entirely true; there have been a couple of changes, but for the better. Baritone saxophonist Matso Limtiaco, who authored nine of the thirteen exemplary charts on Swingin'!, has written all of them this time, while the ECJO has picked up another stellar soloist, veteran trumpeter Vern Sielert. Besides being a superb arranger, Limtiaco is a capable improviser too, as he shows on Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes" and Duke Ellington's "In a Mellow Tone."
Shorter is represented as well by "Speak No Evil" and "Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum," Count Basie by "Jumpin' at the Woodside," Dizzy Gillespie by "Manteca," tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin by "Call It Whatchawanna" (showcasing one of the band's stylish tenors, Travis Ranney). Limtiaco also arranged the standards "Stella by Starlight," "Body and Soul" (another feature for Ranney) and "Come Rain or Come Shine," plus the traditional hymn "Amazing Grace," which he dedicated to those who lost their lives in NYC on September 11, 2001.
The album's only recent composition, "Blues #3," was written by Limtiaco to spotlight the rhythm section (with crisp solos by bassist Steve Messick, drummer Ken French and pianist Reuel Lubag). While each of Limtiaco's charts is enticing, I was especially charmed by the quicker tempo on "Mellow Tone," which is here more assertive than mellow (as is Matso's solo), and the funky framework on "Body and Soul," which handsomely complements Ranney's evocative tenor. "Woodside" doesn't sound a whole lot like Basie's classic theme but is nonetheless sharp and swinging on its own terms.
Limtiaco says he tried to choose songs with great blowing opportunities for the soloists, and so he has. Besides those already mentioned, the resourceful ad-libbers include trombonists Nathan Vetter, Dan Marcus and Vic Anderson; altos Ben Roseth and Mark Taylor; and tenor Cliff Colon, who burns rubber on "Manteca," "Fee-Fi" and "Woodside." The ensemble, as noted, is consistently trim and poised, vanquishing Limtiaco's strenuous charts with unflappable assurance.
The group's leader (and lead trumpeter), Kevin Seeley, writes in the liners that during the two recording sessions "no tune was played more than twice, and half of these tunes we caught on the first take! What a band!" I'll second that. The studio sound is generally acceptable, the 78:55 playing time exemplary. Another slam dunk by the well-endowed ECJO, and one of the more impressive big band albums of the year.
Swinging, No-Nonsense Big Band Jazz .......2005-12-17
"Come Rain or Come Shine" is the second CD by the Seattle-based Emerald City Jazz Orchestra. The Orchestra is directed by Kevin Seeley who also plays lead trumpet in the band. This CD may be even more focused and consistent than the first, "Alive and Swinging" (which is a fine CD, as well).
For one thing, "Come Rain or Come Shine" was recorded in two sessions over two days in early 2005 (rather than over two years). For another, all the charts here are by the band's prime composer and arranger Matso Limtiaco (who also plays baritone sax in the band). Limtiaco's charts are quite creative within the established traditions of modern big band jazz, and he proves there is still musical gold to be mined in old standards like "Stella by Starlight", "In a Mellotone" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside". Perhaps his most striking and memorable charts are on the three prime Wayne Shorter compositions. Other stand-out charts are "Body and Soul" which unfolds from a quiet beginning to a great shout chorus; the bluesy and moving "Amazing Grace"; and the up-tempo "Come Rain or Come Shine" which swings all the way home.
In fact, no-nonsense jazz is the order of the day with this band and its' swinging, straight-ahead music. The band is tight, and the ensemble playing is powerful and spirited. The trumpet section can really bite! This would be a great band to hear live.
Among the band's fine soloists are trumpeter Vern Sielert, trombonists Vic Anderson (well-featured on Amazing Grace"), Dan Marcus and Nathan Vetter, saxophonists Cliff Colon, Mark Taylor, Travis Ranney, Ben Roseth, and Limtiaco, as well as pianist Reuel Lubag, who sets a high standard for the CD with his opening solo on "Speak No Evil." The rhythm section members - Lubag, bassist Steve Messick, and drummer Ken French are featured in solo roles on Limtiaco's original "Blues No. 2". They also shine as a unit throughout the CD.
The only slight drawback to the CD is the slightly flat and cramped recording sound. It is acceptable and very listenable, but hardly state-of-the art for current big band recordings. However, don't let this mild criticism put you off from buying this enjoyable and generous 78 minute CD. "Come Rain or Come Shine" is warmly recommend to all fans of swinging, accessible big band jazz.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20
Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.
fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15
no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.
