A big hit of the early LP era, the soundtrack of this biopic of Ruth Etting spent 17 weeks at the top of Billboard's chart. Despite the frequent intrusiveness of Percy Faith's orchestral accompaniment, Day performs convincingly on ballads such as the title song, "Ten Cents a Dance," and the single "I'll Never Stop Loving You." Some impossibly hokey up-tempo material ("Sam, the Old Accordion Man") doesn't help, however. --Rickey Wright --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13

The sublime: much of the artistry of this recording is about sound, and the subtle blending/responding of voice with guitar sounds and / or piano sounds. It is in the sensitive musical interplay between the artists where this effort shines. Definitely not recommended for road trips!

The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.

So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).

Ugh. Like a manufactured home vs. a stick-built house, Fleming's manufactured (aka "training and technique") blues voice compares unfavorably to other jazz/blues singers/lounge acts. Would not, COULD not, listen to this recording straight through--one big long, breathy, minor key train wreck in the making. Took the CD on a road trip and had to pull over and remove from queue--either that or drive into a wall.

I have to admit, Haunted Heart was a lot better than I thought it would be,especially her recordings of "River", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress, "My Cherie Amour" and "In my life".
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction.He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.

I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.

To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!

This talented woman can sing anything. I really enjoyed this cd with the lights turned down and a glass of wine to relax after a very stressful day at work. Renee could definitely have another singing career outside of opera should she choose. Hearing her drop that gorgeous voice down one octave rivals the best chanteuses in the business - Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Regina Belle, Sarah Vaughan, etc. This cd of different musical styles reminds me of Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, two great singers whom could interpret any song genre and make their versions special. I loved all the songs and the standouts here are "Haunted Heart", "River", "My One and Only Love", "My Cherie Amour", "Cancao do Amor", and Beatles "In My Life", and "Hard Times Come Again No More".
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.

Renee Fleming is an artist bringing us something new, and beautiful. The poor will always be with us as manifest in those who resent other's movement from their established zones. Renee Fleming is a great female voice with accomplishments her detractors will never have, but in their dreams.

I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Yes, it's true that 90% of the time Broadway fans will want the original Broadway cast recording over any other version, and 95% of the time the full recording will beat any set of "highlights." But this collection of songs from the Rent movie may defy both trends. Rentheads surely have the two-disc Broadway version already, and this well-selected 65 minutes may satisfy their desire to have performances from the movie as well (and the movie has less music than the show anyway). On the other end of the spectrum, people who enjoyed the movie but don't feel the compulsion to own every note of what they heard might well be pleased with a single disc of highlights. This is the perfect CD for those who love the music from the film, or even the Broadway show. I just bought this CD because I am new to "RENT". I first saw the movie 2 weeks ago and I am completely hooked!! I am also addicted to this CD, I listen to it atleast once a day (if not more)!! This is perfect for any "RENT" fans out there!!

I loved Rent, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money for the full version of the soundtrack. Highlights from Rent was PERFECT! It has all the main songs from the movie I was looking for, and that was important to me. I play this soundtrack constantly, from beginning to end, singing along the whole way. Every song on her deserves to be on here - it's amazing.

I got Rent the CD for my birthday, and I looked and I thought it did not have my favorite song on there:No Day But Today well I was exploring the Rent website, and I found out that it was NOT called No Day But Today, it was called Finale B I was so happy and I listen to it over and over and over and over again without me getting sick of it! This is truly a highlights cd, with the only dissapointment, to me, being that the song "Another Day," is not included. But the rest of my favorites Without You, Rent, Tango Maureen, and, of course, La Vie Boheme, make this a great cd for any Broadway lover.

An original "Rent Head", I saw this movie at the cinemas and was less than impressed with the finished product. I found that on watching the DVD I have since completely changed my opinion. The CD is fantabubulous - I love IT!. It is all the wonderful music from the movie and if I gush anymore it will come across as very very ridiculous! Just buy it - its great!

It is an absolute must for anybody who fell in love with the musical!

A big hit of the early LP era, the soundtrack of this biopic of Ruth Etting spent 17 weeks at the top of Billboard's chart. Despite the frequent intrusiveness of Percy Faith's orchestral accompaniment, Day performs convincingly on ballads such as the title song, "Ten Cents a Dance," and the single "I'll Never Stop Loving You." A Shining Day.......2005-09-18

The music for this movie was designed, I think, to show Doris Day at her best. Other collections of her vocals, such as Complete Recordings with Les Brown, fail to showcase Ms. Day's remarkable range, and also fail to show her contrasting styles. In the movie, Ms. Day's character, Ruth Etting, is hardly happy and the mournful tunes Ms. Day sings do justice to Ruth's sad life. But, wonder of wonders, when Ms. Day sings "At Sundown," the kind of perky, peppy tune everyone associates with her, she delivers the song so effortlessly and beautifully that you wish Ruth had never lived an unhappy moment.

What a perfect combination, we've got ol' Dodo singing Ruthie's biggest hits and most well known favorites. Day sounds relaxed on such numbers as Love Me or Leave Me, and Ten Cents A Dance, and she sounds fine'n'groovey on Shakin' The Blues Away and Sam The Accordian Man. This could be called "Doris Day Sings Ruth Etting", and it is a classic, and may be one of day's classiest efforts. If you think Day did nothing jazzworthy since leaving Les Brown, think again, and pick thsi cd up, and then go find the cd's where dodo sings with the Page Cavanaugh Trio, and get the Young Man With A Horn cd, where ol' dodo sings with the Harry James trio! Sizzlin' stuff, by an underrated pop and jazz singer(YES!!! I said JAZZ SINGER!!!, accept it!).

What can you say about Doris Day that hasn't been said by millions of her fans for years. Doris Day is unequivocally the best gal pop singer of the twentieth as well as the early twenty first centuries. She is really without peer in all the most important entertainment categories: A singularly beautiful voice, perfect pitch, a delivery honed with the big bands for years and the ability to project her whole personality and emotion in each vocal performance. Secondly, a gorgeous face and body that was second to none and thirdly an acting ability that ranged from comedic to the most dramatic. No one that I can recall had that much going for them in all of show business. On top of all that Doris was and is a genuinely great person.

In LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME Doris exhibits her great natural acting skills working along side Hollywood legends like Jimmy Cagney, Cameron Mitchell and a host of veteran character actors. Musically, she transcends the popularity and vocal abilities of the film's subject, Ruth Etting. Her renditions of NEVER LOOK BACK, MEAN TO ME, LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, TEN CENTS A DANCE, YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU, and ILL NEVER STOP LOVING YOU, among others, are some of the best she has ever recorded. To hear the purity and richness of her voice, with only a piano accompaniment, in a day and age where the so called current pop stars sing off key, have little or no voice, no power and no sense of individual style and are electronically altered to make them saleable, is one of the true joys of a jaded audiophile. My favorite Doris Day single is her 1948 recording of IT'S MAGIC. That recording still ranks as one of the very best pop vocals of all time and the passage of those 56 years since its' #1 status has only enhanced its' artistry. I most enthusiastically recommend this album and the film and hope it gets into DVD form very soon. I will close with this comment: If I had a teen age daughter who had illustions of a vocal career I would see to it that she had as many of Doris' albums to study as I could provide her to hear what real singing was all about.

Doris Day found the role of a lifetime in the legendary torch singer Ruth Etting. Etting's biographical life as told in LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME is, in my opinion, Doris Day's finest hour on screen. Likewise, the soundtrack album is a must-own for all true Doris Day fans.

LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME recounts the early life and career of Ruth Etting, who was dominated by her lover and manager Marty 'The Gimp' Snyder (played by James Cagney in the movie). The film also featured fine work from Cameron Mitchell (CAROUSEL).

Percy Faith's recreation of the brassy orchestras of the 1920's and 30's is right on the money, and Day fits the period perfectly. Standout numbers include her all-out rendition of "Shakin' the Blues Away", as well as the delightful corn of "Sam the Old Accordian Man". Day also sings such Etting standards as "My Blue Heaven", "You Made Me Love You" and "Ten Cents a Dance". Day's rendition of the title song is indeed haunting, summing up the stormy and violent relationship between Ruth and Marty.

Even before her tragic death at 41 (in 1953), Kathleen Ferrier became a legend for her incomparable voice, her simplicity and sincerity of expression, and her indomitable courage. This compilation of recordings originally made in the 1940s includes four arias from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice recorded live in Holland, which show why Euridice was one of her signature roles. Two beautifully sung Handel arias, two sacred songs by Maurice Greene, and delightful duets by Purcell and Mendelssohn (sung in English with another beloved English singer, Isobel Baillie) are greatly enhanced by the inimitable pianist Gerald Moore. But the core of this recording is the Mahler cycle. Here, Ferrier's voice takes on a new warmth and intensity; her deeply inward, direct expressiveness gives the bereaved parent's grief and anguish a devastating impact. Her reading of the last song could be a bit more spooky, but the end is heartbreaking in its submissive resignation. The Vienna Philharmonic and Bruno Walter are in their native element. --Edith Eisler

Este disco realiza un repaso bastante acertado a la carrera de la mitica contralto Kathleen Ferrier, una de esas voces que hicieron historia y que pasaron a la historia, y con razon.
Junto a unos duetos de Purcell y Mendelshon, y otras canciones, asi como unas arias de Haendel, en las que Ferrier ya va mostrando su gran talento, lo mejor de este disco esta indudablemente en la seleccion del 'Orfeo ed Euridice' de Gluck, tomada de unas funciones en directo a principios de los 50. La Ferrier sienta catedra en la interpretacion del personaje: lo lleva dentro, y lo canta de una forma admirable. Sin duda esta es una de las mejores encarnaciones de 'Orfeo' jamas escuchadas.
El otro pilar del disco son los 'Kindertotenlieder' de Mahler, otra de las maximas especialidades de Ferrier, de los que realiza una version antologica, por voz, diccion y expresion, magistralmente dirigida por Bruno Walter. Un lujazo, vamos.
El disco se consigue actualmente a precio medio, y las remasterizaciones son de calidades variadas (puesto que las grabaciones son de años diferentes) pero el nivel general de las mismas es bastante bueno.
Indudablemente este es un disco que hay que poseer, ya que quizas se trate de uno de los mejores documentos existentes para apreciar el tremendo talento de la gran Kathleen Ferrier.

Voice fans, rejoice -- EMI has finally remastered these recordings and released them as one CD at budget price!
While Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" would be the chief reason for purchasing this CD right away, it also contains several morsels, equally fascinating. Purcell and Mendelsohn's duets, Handel's arias, Greene's spirituals, and 3 live arias from Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice". In general, particularly Mahler, the sound is nothing short of phenomenal. BUT why could not these engineers do the same for "Orfeo" selections? There's a lot of noise on these. On all the selection Ferrier's exceptionally dark mezzo (or contralto with a huge upper register) shines brilliantly. Of course, Mahler's songs bemoaning the death of children are not an easy listen by any means. But the melodies are amazingly harmonious and Bruno Walter's superb orchestra provides ideal background for them, with Ferrier's voice blending gorgeously with strings. Only Mussorgsky could take a subject such as this and make it so breathtakingly captivating. It's actually frightening in by itself. Gerald Moore (well-known for his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) accompanies expertly on Purcell and Mendelsohn's selections.
It would be a treat to hear Ferrier in more alto repertoire; I am just not sure how many were commercially available at the time. Right now, Vivica Genaux is the leading artist in this area, but it would be fascinating to compare these two.
For the sheer vocal marvel experience, do not delay in getting this CD.

A Terrible Beauty.......2002-11-14

Nothing will change my opinion that Mahler should be approached with caution. Like Wagner, the scale and power of his work means that it is simply not for everyone, but inspite of that, this recording is an indespensible part of any serious music lover's collection. Music like this simply is not made any more, but rather this is a glimpse into a past where artists and not accountants ran the music industry.

Mahler's wife Alma bitterly opposed his setting of Ruckert's Kindertotenlieder to music and considering the death of their daughter soon after, it's doubtful if she ever forgave him for it. But the finished work has an indescribable beauty that Kathleen Ferrier and Mahler's protégé Bruno Walter give full expression to in away that no other interpreter's have even approached. More than 50 years on this is both a lasting tribute to the artists involved and an indictment of the decline in standards since.

What is to say - It's Ferrier..........2002-03-31

I bought the CD for the Kindertotenlieder and that's what I am going to write about (though the rest of the program is equally impressive). Ferrier's Mahler interpretations are always in the 5+ star area. When Walter is accompanying her the results are even better (unlike the case of Klemperer). The first song - Nun Will Die Sonn'... the darkness of the music is so prominent, it's breathtaking. All the rest Kindertotenlieder come in the same fashion. If interested in a release with better sound but not these Olympian contritutors, Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig have made some very good discs

I said it before, in my review of the Ferrier/Walter performance of Das Lied von der Erde, recently rereleased by Decca; Ferrier is the authoritative interpreter of Mahler songs--and I have never heard anything to equal this performance of Kindertotenlieder.
