Ivan the Sublime!.......2005-03-06

First of all, I have to confess I never review anything I would not give five stars to. I see these "reviews" as opportunities to share the pleasure I have taken in music that has moved me sufficiently to wish to share that pleasure with others. I doubt very much anyone is interested in why I didn't like something, so I'll leave that task to those don't harbor such doubts.

Which brings me to Ivan Lins, a musician whom I have come to regard as a dear friend, notwithstanding the considerable disadvantage of never even having seen him perform live. Recently when some friends of mine suffered a terrible tragedy, I had this CD sent to them because of what I feel to be its transcendently life-affirming-without-being-saccharine quality.

O Melhor de Novo Tempo is a wonderful introduction to the work of an artist I regard with a reverence similar to that I feel for Tom Jobim. Like Tom he hasn't got a great voice, but he still manages to be a distinctive interpreter of his songs. And so far as I'm equipped to judge, he's a very fine keyboard player. But it is as a composer that he truly shines. He writes music that engages, deeply and on multiple levels, music that is sometimes joyful, sometimes wistful, but never less than heartfelt. In testament to which I can cite numerous jazz players of the highest stature who have worked with him or covered his material. (Including a highly recommended 1996 collaboration with Terence Blanchard, The Heart Speaks).

His composition Comecar de Novo is one of those works that truly puts the "dei" in "vox pop." Meaning no one, not even the composer, will ever manage the definitive treatment (though, on second thought, Simone's cover comes pretty close to deserving that accolade). Madalena is one of the best and most high-spirited (if you'll forgive the vulgarity) "blue ball" anthems this particular oft-rebuffed lover has ever heard. "Dinorah Dinorah" suggests the sort of woman that, like the source of that fugitive whiff of perfume in an empty hallway, you wish you might have encountered in person. And listening to Daquilo que eu sei, I'm simply happy to be alive.

The foregoing is not to slight any of the other songs in this collection. Nor any of the songs that appear on any of his other CDs, for one source of his considerable excellence is consistency. Maybe someone has heard a "mail-in" from Ivan Lins, but it wasn't me!

Great diversity of songs with this album!!.......2003-02-20

I've read the previous review, and had to comment. I just recently procured this CD, and I'm glad the previous writer didn't burn my copy! I've listened to Gal Costa for over 20 years. This particular album shows some real depth. Granted, she shows a different singing style in some of the songs. But she has some real sassy stuff in here as well. Overall, her personality really comes out in Cabelo. Her rendition of Topazio is sung with enough longing emotion that I've played it many times just to try to understand the many emotions she put into it. Quem te viu, Quem te ve is one of the better samba introductions anyone could get! I give this album a 5 star rating overall, and would recommend it to anyone from the neophyte listener to the long-time fan of Gal!

An abomination that must be stopped.......2001-11-05

I love Gal Costa but HATE this album. I am deeply disturbed that one of my favorite Brazilian singers could sink to such lows as employing these abysmal Holiday Inn Lounge-style cheesy synthesized keyboards. The only track even remotely listenable is #6, Bem-Bom. I'm going to make ever effort to return this CD, and if I can't get a refund, I'm going to do my civic duty of destroying it, because to allow it to circulate would be the height of cruelty.

The CD counts the best of the career of one of the best singers of Brazil, she really gets to sing the Samba as few. A CD simply fantastic.

Not All Winners, But An Enjoyable Listen.......2007-03-28

I have no idea what Tim Maia sang about (and was barely understandable in English songs), but O Melhor is a good start into the world of the genre MPB. Not every song is a winner in this album, but "Gostava" is a terribly addicting, smooth song and "O Descobridor" is a very upbeat song that is funky, dance friendly, and would be 10x better if produced in a modern studio. The album "Som Livre" would be a better purchase, as more of the tracks are more listenable and the album's tenor is more consistent.

Poor track selection .......2005-09-12

Poor musical selection. I own myself an old Tima Maia's vinyl record with only four but great tracks: Primavera, Jurema, Cristina and the funky-samba-bossa Coronel Antonio Bento, my favourite. Tim Maia's work is much more than this worthless compilation. Only two good disco themes: O descobridor dos sete mares and Voce e eu, eu e voce.

Brasil's Godfather of Soul.......2004-03-11

Although he was very popular and had a successful career in Brasil, unfortunately Tim Maia never had quite the crossover success that other Brazilian artists, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim (Tom Jobim), Astrud Gilberto, and others had abroad. However this does not reflect on his level of talent. He is truly one of Brasil's greatest Soul gems of the 70's. Tim Maia began his singing career in the United States in the early 60's, where he learned English and studied American Soul/R&B music. Upon returning to Brasil he incorporated all the soulful elements of American R&B music into his own work. The result: A creative blend of R&B-Soul-Funk-Disco-Samba. Hearing this album you will be able to hear all the influences of great American Soul/R&B artists from the 60's & 70's, such as James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Commodres, and Kool & The Gang....Just to name a few. Tim Maia also has a warm voice that is guaranteed to lift your spirits!

Guitar artistry.......2002-10-10

I had never heard of Carlos Paredes but bought this disk while visiting Portugal. I've played guitar for 20 years and am always trolling for new discoveries. It did not take more than a couple of tracks to realize that I had stumbled onto someone who is a true master. The Portuguese guitar has a wonderful sound and the compositions and playing on this disk are fantastic. Best disk I've bought in a long time.

Soft, strangely inebriating, a gentle guitar takes over your mind, your heart and then your movements. It's a Portuguese sound with hidden routs lost in the midst of time. Some say it derives from early Christian music, others affirm that it has strong Arabian influences. The Portuguese discoveries, in the Renaissance, gave it an African touch, and then it became international. It's music, pure sound, without words, understood by everyone, so simple and so deep and touching. This album, composed and played by the best in the Portuguese Guitar world - Carlos Paredes, compiles the greatest hits of this man's life, he who was always a civil servant, even when his career was at its pick, he who said: I have no objectives, is now one of those blessed persons that produced something that lasts: art! Everything is so beautiful that I find it very difficult to recommend one theme, but I guess Verdes Anos, is my favourite. If you can, buy it, listen to it and may it touch you as it touched me.
