Andy Williams's biggest Christmas album is also one of his best. The original Williams standards are here--"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "The Christmas Song," and "Christmas Present"--but so are songs that would later become identified with him as well, like "The Bells of St. Mary's" and "My Favorite Things." Splitting the songs between the religious and the romantic, Williams includes his warm rendition of "Silent Night" and enthusiastic "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" alongside "White Christmas," "Sleigh Ride," and "Christmas Song." Great renditions of "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Ol' Saint Nicholas" have a 1940's nostalgic charm. The soothing sound of the slow Christmas ballad, "Snowfall" is simply flawless, you can visually see the snowflakes drifting dreamily down, as Doris casts her wintry spell. I highly recommend this cd for endless listening pleasure during the Holidays and also the Dean Martin Christmas cd, "A Winter Romance." There is no better way to bring in the warm, wonderful feelings of Christmas than with this album. Doris can enrich any song anytime, but with these traditional holiday favorites she is in top form. This is a great Christmas CD. We were very pleased with the songs. It actually exceeded our expectations. It is a real classic.

Best Christmas Music Ever.......2007-01-10

This is the only Christmas Disc I own. The only one I haven't discarded after being disappointed. Johnny sings Christmas music like no other, and these are his personal favorites. It doesn't get better than this.

With so many Johnny Mathis Christmas albums from which to choose, I chose this one because I knew I had to have at least one Johnny Mathis Christmas album in my collection. I was pleased with this from the start.
Though I wasn't born until 1977, listening to this album seems to conjure up in my mind the sort of ideal 1950s-era nuclear family-around-the-Christmas-tree image, or at least what I would have thought that image might have included. I suppose what one person might consider nostalgic another person would not, but the mood of this album suggests another time, an ideal time, perhaps that one might have in childhood. The swirling strings and Mathis' gorgeous voice seem to float around like snowflakes falling from the sky. All the songs are wonderful (though my least-favorites are the somewhat hokey "We Need A Little Christmas" and "Marshmallow World"). I do particularly like his version of "Silver Bells." All-in-all, a great album, and a must-have to your Christmas music collection!

This is a wonderful collection of Christmas songs, including the hard to find, We Need a Little Christmas. Johnny Matthis does it up right. Loved this album!

Classic Mathis: One of his Best!.......2005-12-09

I don't buy too many Christmas albums, because you can listen to them only once a year, but I must say it doesn't feel like Christmas til you hear a youthful Mathis singing, "We Need a Little Christmas," "Its A Wonderful Time of the Year" or "Winter Wonderland." It's great music and it sets right mood for any Christmas gathering. I would also suggest the only other two CDs in my sparse Christmas collection: "Ella's FitzGerald's "Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas" and Nat King Cole's "Christmas Song." The remastered Cole CD contains three verisons of the Christmas Song, one of which is yet another techno-enginnered duet with daugther Natalie with a 100-piece orchestra; a version that we've all heard for decades on the radio; and the original version recorded in the late 40s by the Nat King Cole Trio. To be honest, the duet with Natalie I could do without.

Panis Angelicus.......2004-12-04

I bought this CD for that one song alone! My parents had a compilation LP (now in my collection) that included Barbra Streisand, Julie Andrews, and many other incredible singers. I think it was a giveaway at Christmas at the Firestone tire store -- no I'm not kidding -- and the most incredible thing on that whole album was Robert Goulet singing Panis Angelicus. I had never heard the song before, don't know Latin.....but oh my God

I picked it up on eBay a few days ago. There were 3-4 other copies available. While I do have that vinyl LP, and enjoy all of the other songs and singers on it, this is the one I "need" on CD format so I can carry it around, load it into my computer, include it in my own Christmas playlists.... I am looking forward to the other material on the CD, but all I need is Panis Angelicus. Obviously, for me this is the definitive rendition of this beautiful song.

Christmas isn't Christmas without Robert Goulet!.......2003-11-07

This is the ultimate Christmas album in my house!! I grew up with this album (and many others) being played everyday between Thanksgiving and Christmas!! Just hearing the first few notes takes me back 25-30 years easily!! I turned my husband on to Mr. Goulet some 10 years ago and now he (and our 3 children) love it too! A must have! I just got the CD last year (after much searching). I still have the original album, but the kids can't understand why you can't jump up and down while listening to an album, besides it's nice to have this one to listen to in the van!!

I thank you for the kind letter and many compliments. To allay your fears: no, I do not suspect you of "kissing up" to me (as you so delicately phrased it).

I have looked over your Christmas Wish List and regret to inform you that we have never made those types of things up here at my workshop. You'll need to seek out another source. We're a little more "family" oriented, don't you know-ho-ho?

I can, however, happily fulfill your request for my most highy recommended Holiday music. I'll be brief beclaus - I mean, because - this is my busy time of year, what with overseeing the work at the elves toy factory and coal mine, and with the Missus constantly shoving food at me and insisting that I, "Eat! Eat!"

Mrs. Claus and I have always been partial to the JOHNNY MATHIS renditions of most Christmas standards. The Missus says they're, "Wonderful! Wonderful!" And though It's Not For Me To Say, Chances Are you'll enjoy them, too. Little Johnny's voice is a "gift" that originates from regions even higher than the North Pole!

THE CHRISTMAS MUSIC OF JOHNNY MATHIS: A PERSONAL COLLECTION is a readily available single-disc compilation of songs personally selected by Johnny from his previously released Christmas albums.

There are a few songs that were regrettably overlooked, most notably, his emotionally stirring, O HOLY NIGHT from his first release, 'MERRY CHRISTMAS.' Leaving that off nearly landed Johnny on my "Bad Boys" list! And there's no I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, nor THE CHRISTMAS SONG. That's ho-ho-horrible!

Missing from the album, 'FOR CHRISTMAS', is Johnny's spirited, JINGLE BELL ROCK. Also, GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN which, while too slow, concludes with two indescribably joyful notes!

I think we can both agree that JINGLE BELLS is overrated beclaus - I mean, because - it is too simplistic and has been played to death. But Stephen, did you ever hear Johnny's version from 'CHRISTMAS EVE WITH JOHNNY MATHIS'? It's even superior to the rendition that the Jingle Dogs barked out many moons ago! It has a marvelously updated arrangement that makes me want to stuff the Missus into the sleigh and go for a Winter ride. Alas, we can't BOTH fit into the thing side-by-side anymore. But then JINGLE BELLS isn't included on this disc either.

To really do Johnny's Christmas music justice, this should have been conceived as a two-disc set. Nevertheless, what IS included is truly classic Holiday music that's been widely celebrated and publicly played since you were nose-high to an elf. We deerly love it up here at "The Pole." Of course, the elves don't pay much attention to it; they're forever singing their nerve-racking elf songs, but my reindeer team just can't get enough of it - especially Rudolph: you should see his face light up every time the Missus puts it on! Why I even saw it bring a smile to grumpy ol' Blitzen once. (Or else he had gas, and that was only a grimace.) You really should own all of Johnny's Christmas music, but if you're inclined to buy just one Christmas music C.D., this disc is the way to go-ho-ho.

Well, I'd better close now beCAUSE we're way behind schedule as it is, and I've got trouble brewing over at the toy shop: two elves recently got caught sniffing snow; one elf ran off to become Denver's most diminutive dentist; another one has a ribbon fetish; and yet another is in therapy because she insists that she's a reindeer; and the whole lot of them are threatening to unionize! Yeah, ol' Santa's got his troubles, too.

I hope this letter has been some help to you.
Stephen, be a good boy between now and December 24th, and perhaps you won't be unwrapping another lump of coal this year.

While the singing on this CD is fantastic, only one track had the correct track labeling. I don't know if this one CD I purchased was a fluke (and Amazon.com needs to replace it) or it is a general production flaw. Amazing singing, but flawed production of the CD.

HE CAN TURN THE TIDES AND CALM THE ANGRY SEA...!.......2003-06-05

As a supurb and expanded version of Jerry Vales original Christmas Album titled "Christmas Greetings", these songs were hand picked for this CD by Vale himself! If you could pick one album to represent an old fashion American Christmas, this would be the one. Reminiscent of a Perry Como Christmas album, Jerry's vocals are flawless as he effortlessly croons out some smooth and beautifully arranged high notes, complimented by the fantastic orchestration, and the better-than-average backup singers and choir. Vale's "I'll Be Home For Christmas", is the best version I've ever heard, the choir and Vale bonding together in a fantastic display of harmonies and soaring notes. All the songs are excellently done, but my favorite on this CD is "He". Recorded in 1972, and formally released on the vinyl LP "Alone Again Naturally", "He" is a full-bodied, full-choired, fully-orchestrated and lengthy musical extravaganza that only Jerry Vale could pull off with such panache. It's a rare spiritually treat from the master of "croon" that you'll find yourself playing over and over again. Another treat is the rare and cute "Santa Mouse" which was previously only available on a 45 single. I give this CD AAAAAAA+++++++ and recommend it to newcomers, collectors, and everyone looking for the perfect Christmas music collection. Hopefully it's more readily available during the Christmas season.

Splitting the songs between the religious and the romantic, Williams includes his warm rendition of "Silent Night" and enthusiastic "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" alongside "White Christmas," "Sleigh Ride," and "Christmas Song." A nice mix of Andy Williams at his best, Personal Christmas Collection is also a nice sampling of holiday music as well, without the sillier songs of the season. --Steve Gdula

My husband surprised me with this record before Christmas and I absolutely love it. If you grew up in the 60s, it's hard to imagine a household from that era that didn't have at least one of Williams' holiday albums to enjoy. This one is such a nice combination of secular and sacred Christmas music and we just love it. I'm so glad that we found this record so that we can pass on the holiday tradition to our own children. What a great way to celebrate the season!

Best of Andy Williams Christmas music.......2002-12-04

Can't decide on whether to pick up 1963s "The Christmas Album" or 1965s "Merry Christmas"? Well then this collection, from 1994, may be the way to go. It pulls together many of the best tracks from both those classic releases plus another four tracks from his 1973 third and final holiday release for Columbia, "Christmas Present". Andy Williams has always been a wonderful interpreter of Christmas music, able to handle both the contemporary standards and traditional numbers. His definitive recordings of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" and "Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season" are included here, along with other numbers that seem linked to Williams forever: "Silver Bells", "My Favorite Things" being two examples.

My only wish is that they had included a few more tracks - while 15 selections may seem like a generous offering, with most of the songs clocking in under 3 minutes we're still left with less than 40 minutes of play time. Certainly there is room for frantic "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells", "Some Children See Him", and the touching "Sweet Little Jesus Boy". Better yet release both "Andy Williams Christmas Album" (aka the "red" album) and "Merry Christmas" (the "green" album) on one CD. That's the ticket!

Still this is the best of the best from one of the true voices of Christmas and certainly the way to go if you're only going to get ONE Andy Williams Christmas CD.

When I was growing up, Andy Williams' "red" yuletide album was the quintessential Christmas record. The instantly recognizable opening chords of the joyful number "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" always greeted us first thing Christmas morning.
