Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sticks in your head for days!.......2002-07-26

If you are offended by outdated stereotypes and slang, don't get this CD.

If you enjoy fun, creative jazz music with a clever turn of phrase and catchy tune, you should have this in your collection. It's unlikely that you'll ever hear many of these songs on modern radio, even the worthwhile jazz or public stations, because of it's non-PC references. And that's a pity, because it's pure fun.

5 out of 5 stars I love the sound of Hoagy..........2001-10-13

There is a style to his piano playing that is unmistakable. Then when his voice kicks in, it is like coming home again. I can picture him singing the songs and playing the tunes. I enjoy seeing him occasionally in the films. But love to spend the days just absorbing his "stardust"...

5 out of 5 stars A Vintage Selection of the Great Hoagy Carmichael.......2000-08-08

Hoagy Carmichael made a surprising number of recordings of his own and others' music. This disc contains twenty-four selections from his Decca sessions (mid-40s to early 50s). There isn't a weak track here. Every song comes across with the marvelous vitality and personality of this great musician. In some of the performances of his own material there is the frisson that comes from hearing Carmichael's immense creativity: he brings a feeling of improvisation to the recordings, yet does justice to his own melody, while fully acknowledging the lyric. Carmichael had the kind of voice that was an imperfect instrument, yet was ideally suited to anything he chose to sing. The renditions of novelty songs like "Huggin' and Chalkin'" or "Abba Dabba Honeymoon" are as enjoyable as anything else, even if the material is greatly inferior to Carmichael's own. A couple of highlights: the infectiously swinging versions of "Ole Buttermilk Sky" and "Washboard Blues". In spite of what the liner notes imply, the recording of "Lazy River" here is NOT the one Carmichael made for Pacific Jazz in 1956.

The album's producers have done a superb job of mastering these recordings. One cannot imagine them sounding any better. The beautifully designed CD package includes extremely interesting notes about these Decca sessions and features some wonderful photos of the artist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars CARMICHAEL WILL NEVER BE OUT OF FASHION.......2001-03-14

A collection offering most of CARMICHAEL's mostly remembered songs between the late twenties until 1950 is always a good buy. This one has HOAGY singing his own songs the way only him could do in his sleepy kind of SOUTHERN grace. The same can be said of his friend JOHNNY MERCER with whom he wrote many songs. If you've never heard them sing their songs you miss something. Those SOUTHERN guys were easy living characters who had a special kind of charm.STARDUST is there in it's piano version;ROCKIN'CHAIR with a young LOUIS ARMSTRONG in a duet;many other duets and other delights make this a perfect compagnon to the CAPITOL singers singing his songs. But as you may remember there was a song that BING CROSBY used to sing that's not included here why?It was IN THE COOL COOL COOL OF THE EVENING from the film HERE COMES THE GROOM.Sorry, but you can't have everything.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful selection of early recordings.......2005-08-17

I grabbed this box set because it was on sale cheap and my favorite song is "Stardust". Little did I know what a great investment I had made.
I am only in my early 20s, so I was hearing all of these recordings for the first time and I wasn't disappointed. It's too bad this particular collection of CDs seems to be obscure and overlooked when you search for Hoagy Carmichael's music on Amazon. Don't let that fool you; it is great. There are 101 sides here, including recordings by the great Louis Armstrong, the Boswell sisters, Fats Waller, and many with Hoagy himself. The songwriter's own version of "Stardust" is wonderful.
Also, this is the first set I have gotten from JSP Records, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the HUMONGOUS booklet of liner notes which came with this set. It was compiled by Hoagy's personal autobiographer and gives background and analysis for each of the recordings. It is so thorough, it's too thick for me to carry in my regular CD carrying case! All in all, this compilation of recordings from 1924-1946 are terrific and show a wonderful progression in the history jazz and also the works of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Album Description

At last, available for the first time the definitive study of Hoagy Carmichael in a splendid 10 CD BOX SET from the masters of re-mastered nostalgia…..AVID Entertainment. Our collection follows Hoagy from his earliest moments on record with the likes of Hitch's Happy Harmonists, Paul Whiteman and Louis Armstrong into the 1930's where he was to have his most fruitful period and arguably his greatest success with such classics as Star Dust, Rockin'Chair and Georgia On My Mind. Our journey continues into the 40's and 50's where the master not only produces great new work but creates new versions of old classics often better sung and better realised than the earlier 20's and 30's recordings. Decca recordings are heavily featured throughout the Box Set alongside many tracks which first appeared on V-Disc as well as a variety of bootleg labels. For the first time, the ARA label is represented featuring Hoagy as singer and pianist singing such classics as Snowball and ! Lazy Bones and perhaps foreshadowing the likes of Elton John and Billy Joel. For an untrained musician Hoagy Carmichael made an enormous contribution to 20th Century music and left us a magnificent legacy of standards as this well packaged and re-mastered Box Set illustrates. It is sadly perhaps, a lost era now, as Hoagy said in 1979, "I could have accomplished a hell of a lot more…..but rock just knocked me out…I just quit almost on account of rock n roll!" His last hit was in 1950 but his musical legacy will live on forever.

5 out of 5 stars Laidback class .......2006-06-07

Hoagy Carmichael wrote and played some of the great American songs, including one of the greatest of all, his signature song, 'Stardust'. He had a certain laidback quality, an ease, an effortlessness ( or so it seemed) that suited truly the composer of 'Lazy River' 'In the Cool of the Evening' and 'Heart and Soul'. His music is music which gives quiet pleasure and sense of deep relaxation.
      One of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Missing are the songs from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES- Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell.......2006-01-03

Hoagy Carmichael wrote some great songs for the film GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell.
Great songs such as WHEN LOVE GOES WRONG, sung by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, as well as another one called AIN'T THERE ANYONE HERE FOR LOVE, a great song performed by Jane Russell
amid a group of athletic musclemen from the US Olympic Team.
A song deleted from the film WHEN THE WILD WILD WOMEN GO IN
SWIMMING IN BIMINI BAY sung by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell
has never surfaced anywhere, even though the scene from that
song is used in the trailer of the film. Did anyone else record
      this song? .
      Hoagy Carmichael, a great songwriter.

      4 out of 5 stars A great songbook of a great composer.......2004-01-30

Hoagy Carmichael is one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He's the author of the best songs of the century (Stardust, Georgia on my mind, Lazy River, the Nearness of you, Heart and Soul,...). His songs have been covered by most of the greatest artists of the 20th century: Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and so on. "The Hoagy Carmichael Songbook", released in 1990, gives a fairly good idea of how good and influential was Carmichael's music. All Carmichael's major hits (performed by an all star cast) can be found in this "Songbook". The best part of the record is - by far - Mildred Bailey's recording of Rockin' Chair. It is very powerful and very moving at the same time. Her voice, coupled with the sound of xilophones, gives the song a sort of otherworldly beauty. I have rarely heard anything as good as this.

      5 out of 5 stars Hoagy's timeless tunes reinterpreted!.......2003-12-16

This review is for the Concord release, not the RCA. For some unknown reason Amazon is crossposting these reviews to both. They are two completely different releases differing in content and performers.

Mostly lighthearted and breezy, these ten 'cool jazz' recordings from the contemporary Concord discography form a tribute album of sorts. This is a fun disc -- a real pick-me-up for overcast moods or days. A great mix of vocals and instrumentals. Quite enjoyable. Have no fear getting this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Hoagy Carmichael Songbook.......2002-09-12

About an hour of funny and romantic music performed by various artists, mostly from the past. Gives you a great "feel" of this wonderful, composer, singer (almost) and piano player's talents. You feel Carmichael's very human and gentle view of life. Leaves you whistling. I'm buying extra copies for friends because when they hear mine, they want it.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hoagy plays and sings!.......2003-11-26

Transfered from 78s recorded between 1939-1947, the CD does indeed reveal the limitations of the source materials. But in this case, who cares? These two dozen songs -- all but two sung by Hoagy Carmichael -- are a welcome compilation of "shaggy dog classics" from Decca, ARA and V-Disc that would otherwise be lost. Some informative liner notes to boot.

Hoagy can really play that piano -- you may find your toes tapping while you listen. In addition to playing the piano, Hoagy is backed by various bands, studio orchestras, trios, and vocal groups. The music master even does short whistling solos on "Rockin' Chair", "Baltimore Oriole", "Old Man Harlem" and "Judy".

I would love to hear these recordings with improved sonics but until that happens, this is a very enjoyable listen.

BTW, if you want cleaner sound of different recordings, I highly recommend the excellent "Hoagy Carmichael and Friends: Stardust Melody" ASIN: B0000640NS.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent songbook!.......2004-05-14

It's unfortunate that the other reviewer graded this work with so few stars merely because the songs were not performed by Hoagy. It's also unfortunate that he or she, like so many others, had never heard of Barbara Lea or Bob Dorough or Jim Ferguson before purchasing this album. Ms. Lea is one of the finest interpreters of American song, in a league with her idol and influence, Lee Wiley. Bob Dorough is, of course, one of the voices behind the classic songs on Schoolhouse Rock (along with Blossom Dearie!) and Jim Ferguson, although a lesser known talent, is an exceptional musician. Hoagy would have been proud...and would likely have given five stars as well!

          2 out of 5 stars Carmichael?.......2002-05-07

These songs represent a good selection of Hoagy's work. However, I would point out that they ARE NOT performed by Hoagy. The description does not point out that they are "interpreted" by other performers - none of which I had heard of before reading the back of the CD. It may well be that I don't listen to their genre, but I think mentioning the performers might have been a reasonable expectation. Hoagy is always good, but I was looking or should I say listening for Mr. Carmichael.
