Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
pure genius.......2007-05-21
No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection
Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15
The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.
first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12
the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.
Encore.......2007-03-31
Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.
The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29
I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

The platinum success of 1997's Mission to Please and frequent sampling of the likes of "Between the Sheets" speak to the ongoing viability of the Isley Brothers' name. Despite a 40-plus-year discography including church-bred R&B, proto-Latin soul, Motown hits, and blinding funk rock (the three-CD It's Your Thing box is a terrific crash history course, an instant-party kit, and the best buy for newcomers), leader Ronald is considered first and foremost a quiet-storm seduction master. Eternal aims to unite both factions with a steady midtempo flow, undiminished vocal power, and guest shots by admirers on the order of R. Kelly and Jill Scott. Though the unvaried approach ignores a number of their strengths, such as guitarist Ernie's Hendrix-like screams, it's a success on its terms. More tuneful than the average early 21st-century soul make-out session, Eternal scores even with a sweaty remake of Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now." Ronald Isley's lyric references to his popular video alter ego, "Mr. Biggs," rub the wrong way, but such missteps are few here. --Rickey Wright

Simply the best (Sorry Tina)!.......2005-08-27
This is the third purchase of this CD. Everyone who listens to it (male or female) wants their own copy. It's just that great!
The Isley Brothers can sing their behinds off..and over any other group that I can think of in their class. The entire CD
paints a vivid picture of any man and any woman in various situations. Just put yourself there! And learn from the experience. A glass of wine and you're in the moment.
A LONG TIME COMING.......2005-05-08
THIS ALBUM MARKED A RETURN OF SORTS TO THE OLD TRADEMARK ISLEY BROTHERS SOUND,AND IT'S OFF THE HOOK.JAM AND TERRY,STEVE HUFF,RAFEAL SADDIQ,KELLY AND ANGELA WINBUSH ALL TOOK THEIR TURNS PUTTIN' IT DOWN,AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID.FROM THE TIME MOVE YOUR BODY KICKS IN UNTIL THE VERY END THIS ALBUM IS ABSOLUTELY SLAMMIN'.HIGHLIGHTS IN MY OPINION ARE YOU DESREVE BETTER,JUST LIKE THIS,WARM SUMMER NIGHT AND MOVE YOUR BODY.BUT THE ABSOLUTE HIGHLIGHT AND(in my opinion)ONE OF THE MOST SLEPT ON SONGS OF ALL TIMES IS THE TITLE CUT ETERNAL.THAT IS ONE OF MY TOP TEN ISLEY BROTHERS FAVORITES OF ALL TIMES.THE SONG KIND OF REMINDS ME OF MAKE ME SAY IT AGAIN,AND EARNIE SHOWED ALL THE WAY OUT ON THE GUITAR SOLO ON THAT SONG.CONTAGIOUS EVEN HAD A BIT OF THE ISLEYS SOUND AND PROBABLY INTRODUCED THEM TO A WHOLE NEW AUDIENCE.AS A WHOLE,I AM EXTREMELY FOND OF THIS ALBUM.
Ronald & Ernie you don't need R. Kelly! Get rid of him!.......2005-01-01
I've been a huge fan of the Isleys for over 30 years, and stuck by them through the early Motown soul and their golden groove-funk period of the 1970s, through to the later stuff right up to the excellent Mission To Please album. But that's when they should have dumped R. Kelly, because it's the last album that had any really decent hook to it. And when you have a blistering guitarist like Ernie Isley, why bury him so far in the mix that his licks sound like they're being played through cotton wool?
R. Kelly's plodding grooves just grind from one indistinguishable track to another, which is pretty much the case on the even more disappointing follow-up to this, Body Kiss. The only track that kicks any ass here is the opener, Move Your Body, which fools you into thinking this might be a return to former glories for our heroes. Sadly, the leaden funk of R. Kelly then comes crashing in like a tidal wave of sludge and we get a whole turgid mess of leaden walking-pace 'grooves' that might sound all right in the background when you're getting it on with the partner of your dreams, but as listening music just gets you all exasperated and reaching for the 3+3 album again.
Come on, Isleys, dump the Kelly glop and get back to what you can do best!
Listening to it right now!!!!!.......2004-03-16
The Isley Brothers are timeless. Their music is enjoyable to every generation. To come all these years and have devoted fans is not luck, it's talent.
Ronald Isley a. k. a. Mr. Biggs is just a Kool Kat. His songs are about relationships of today but portrayed in a tasterful way. He is not ashamed to admit that men get played too and he does this well with the help of my boy R. Kelly.
All the tracks on this album are a treat to listen too. I find myself repeating most of them. This album should be in anyone's collection that enjoys R & B.
Later.....
Is' good, but not what I look for in an Isleys album..........2003-06-09
Look, I love the Isley Brothers; I grew up with 'em, an' I respect them for bringin' new meaning to the term longevity, so for that reason there ain't much bad I can say 'bout this album. I love Ron Isley's voice an' I love smoothed-out R&B, nice hooks, atmospheric an' romantic background music an' this album has ALL of those things. So why is this not an essential album to me? Simple. These lyrics, while charming, sound like they comin' from a young, thuggish R&B loverboy, NOT a mature, elder statesman who knows the game well. I do like the groove on 'Warm Summer Night' an' there are some even more solid songs on the set like the funky, guitar-fueled opener 'Move Your Body' an' the hypnotically soulful 'You Didn't See Me', both produced by the mos' underrated talent in R&B Raphael Saadiq, an' there are some hidden gems throughout like the monumental title track which owes the mos' to their classic '70s ballads, but overall there's jus' not enough of that real, raw emotive grown-folks' music I was in search of.
Maybe Ron is tryin'ta relive his youth with this Mr. Biggs persona, maybe R. Kelly (who, don't get me wrong, I love as a singer) HAS in some ways corrupted them, an' then again maybe I jus' don't get it, but this style jus' don't work for me when it comes to the Isleys' music. I'll admit I like the bluesy flow of 'Contagious', an' I'm a sucker for this whole cinematic 'Down Low' drama that Ron an' Kelly have been playin' out in song for the past few years, but they shoulda stayed on the musical path they were on from their '97 disc 'Mission to Please'. THAT was grown-folks' music, an' THAS' what I'm lookin' for in them; I need my game to be backed up with some serious, uninhibited, classy romantic RELATIONSHIP music, not a cartoon character named Mr. Biggs feedin' his ego an' his appetite for sex.
This album is the main reason, I'm hesitant about pickin' up their most recent album 'Body Kiss', 'cause from what I've heard is' all that this is an' more (or less dependin' on how you look at it), so I guess if you gave this five stars, then you can't go wrong with it. But, me personally, I'm'a stick with their more substantial older stuff.

Check This Out.......2007-05-29
There are some groups (War, The Isley Brothers and The Ojay's just to name a few) that have so many great songs that it's virtually impossible to do a greatest hits cd to do them justice. That's one reason I tend to shy away from "greatest hits" cd's. As far as I'm concerned EWF tops this list. This compilation turned me on to some of their earlier stuff that I wasn't familiar with so I was pleasantly surprised with it. And for all the great music on this set there shouldn't be too many complaints.
Happiness is when you been there........2007-05-17
If you're old school, like me. You'll want to add this to your collection. Lots of good music from the old days; when criusing, picknics, and the beach, were the best things to do. Might even influence you to take some time out for yourself.
Excellent Album!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-11
My husband and I love this album. It have alot of major hits on it. He listen to this album all the time
A boxed set for the sake of a boxed set.......2006-10-21
Any EWF compilation inevitably includes great stuff; this is one of the very few cases in which a unit's chart climbers represent its best work. But maybe they don't deserve a complete career retrospective because so much of the early stuff herein sounds underproduced. (This multi-track over-the-top soul/funk genre is perhaps the only one toward which such criticism can be justified.) The big question: why wouldn't you just buy "Best of/Vol. I" and "Gratitude"--itself a pre-box-era live/studio double-lp catch-all--at their bargain bin prices and call it a day?
Nice BUT Incomplete EWF Box Set!.......2006-06-18
'The Eternal Dance' isn't as GREAT as it COULD BE, but IT'S ALMOST THERE!! With a legendary group like EWF, this anthology should've included at least 4 CDs, BUT there are a few bright spots!! Like most die hard EWF fans, I got this box set mainly for the unreleased tracks, and the rare live songs that didn't make it onto 1975's classic 'Gratitude' are priceless (fans, consider remastering 'Gratitude' and add these tracks for an improved EWF concert!!). The tracklisting is fairly predictable, but WHERE IS 'LOVE'S HOLIDAY'???, and I proclaim the 2nd CD to be the strongest in the set (the 3rd one could've been better!!).
With all of the redundant compilations ('Essential EWF', 'Greatest Hits', 'Super Hits', 'Definitive Collections', 'Remastered Classics', yada, yada!!) for EWF, I would STILL recommend buying the original CDs from 1972 - 1979 (most of these CDs have been remastered with bonus tracks & improved sound!!). Other bright spots this 3 CD set is the color scheme for the CDs, and the informative BOOKLET, which contains great liner notes and rare photos. The booklet alone is a collector's item!!
At any rate, let's hope for a better (IMPROVED!!) EWF tribute in the near future, or BETTER YET, Sony/Legacy will consider re-releasing 'The Eternal Dance' as a 4 CD set (also including a bonus DVD) ? Let's hope so...After 35 Years, EWF IS TRULY WORTHY!!!!
Peace, SD (of 'Chaka's World')

Customer Reviews:
Great Group, great songs, great stage shows..........2005-03-04
Timeless. Transcends age and culture. This group brought people together. This collection has almost everything a true fan could ever ask for. Although I am not old enough, I know there was nothing like an Earth, Wind and Fire and Parliament stage show in the 1970's. Any real music fan should have this in their collection.
Terrific !.......2003-08-16
This is a good anthology although some of my favorite tunes
were sorely missed. Let's face it, I'm sure it was a hard
choice being the compiler for this project as EW&F recorded
so many stellular tunes that were not singles like "Would
You Mind" "You Went Away" "Jupiter" and virtually anything
included on 1981's "Raise". I hate "Boogie Wonderland" but
it was a big hit! The omission of "Lover's Holiday" though
is quite puzzling.
The Box Set Is One Fire.......2003-07-25
The Eternal Dance is the power that holds Earth, Wind, & Fire legacy. It's the legacy that is on 3 discs. I can say that this set made me explore a dark, trippy, and exciting adventure. I love this box set but, it could've been better. It has a lot their hits like That's The Way Of The World, Reasons, Sun Goddess, and Power. It could've been 4 discs because I've heard some rare stuff by lead singer and percussionist, Maurice White. I've heard him play on some other records but, I don't own any of them. Some of the fans would like to hear more of their rare stuff but, 3 discs are enough. The booklet has two different stories on the band, you get some commentary by Maurice White about his experiences on the starting the group, rare photos, tracklisting, and a discography. The booklet is informative. This box set starts at 1970 to 1990. I brought the Best Of EWF...Vol.1 first before I listened to this anthology.I really love this box set because you get a lot of their before and after hits. So buy it if you're record collection of Earth, Wind, & Fire is worn out or if you want to listen to the power of EWF.

It's got the Power.......2003-06-12
Whatever else some reviewers may say about the choice of tracks, at least it includes what in my opinion was the band's crowning achievement - way back in 1972. I'm talking about "Power" which originally appeared on "Last Days and Time". If you don't know the track, it's an utterly awesome, upbeat instrumental piece, beautifully structured over its 8 minutes of sublime playing time. The band really gave it their all, with all the then members playing their hearts out. If the record company were ever to do an "EWF: the instrumentals" type collection, then this track would be the very finest among the gathered gems. Meanwhile, either buy this or "Last Days and Time" to get the Power!

Customer Reviews:
Great Live Solos!.......2001-12-16
Great to have an album of live solos gathered together instead of the sometimes comparatively lifeless studio sessions! Just a comment on the review that said 'Zakir is referring to the time signature "6.5/4", what he really is saying is that its just 13/8. No need to make others think that its amazingly complex when its just a simple rhythm with a flashy name' ... this reviewer didn't know what he was talking about since some time signatures have always been classified that way in India. This is not a concoction of Zakir Hussain, and neither is it intended to make anything look complicated, it's just a different way of doing it, that's all.
Timing is misunderstood.......1999-10-19
Great music, but when Zakir is referring to the time signature "6.5/4", what he really is saying is that its just 13/8. No need to make others think that its amazingly complex when its just a simple rhythm with a flashy name. Nice music though.
it gives us an opportynity to listen zakir in different mood.......1999-01-01
i am a great fan of zakir hussain.and i know many friends who became his fan after listening to this album. zakir has an ability to entertain the audiance even while remaining "almost" classical.sometimes he even takes freedom from pure classicalness, but that also entertains the orthodox classical music ians.this album is a proof (it at all it is required!) that zakir is a god in anything that concerns with percussion music...

I love this album so so much........1999-08-01
This album is a diamond classic. It is fantastic and so are the band
Fantastic!.......1999-07-12
An amazing debut album from my favourite group. Eternal have really done well throughout the last 5 years, with 14 UK Top 15 hits, 12 of them making the top 10. This first album from them really started their career well. With 6 Top 15 singles included in the package, this album is really one record you will treasure forever. From the strong opener "Stay" to the short reprise "Amazing Grace" there really is something for everyone on this album of 14 tracks. My personal favourite, like so many other Eternal fans, is the groovy "Just A Step From Heaven", which was the girls' 3rd single in the UK, peaking at no.4 in April 1994; with it's wicked dance routine and catchy chorus, this song shows off the girls' talents to a very high degree, with Easther's vocals setting it off excellently. A truly perfect album from the UK's leading All-girl R & B group. And with the loss of another member, Kelle Bryan, Eternal have kept going, and Easther & Vernie are releasing their new single "Whatcha Gonna Do" in late 1999, which is taken from the long-awaited new album to follow up the massive success of "Before The Rain" and "Greatest Hits".
PURE SWING!!!.......1998-11-05
This albumbrings together the best of british soul and R&B. The variety of different styles lifts the album beyond the monotonous standard R&B album.

garbage album.......2006-12-15
I didn't like this album at all and the beats were terrible. Her lyrics were on point but the songs sucked. I was very disappointed especially since her first album Takin Mine is hardcore. What happened to her album that should've came out 7 years ago when she had a video for the song Do You?
Eternal Affairs.......2002-12-26
It's a shame that Heather B is primarily only known for her role on the first season of MTV's The Real World. Long before starring on the vanguard reality show she was an established emcee in her own right, making a splash in the underground with her single "All Glocks Down" and impressively holding her own while sharing mics with KRS-ONE as a guest on Boogie Down Productions' Sex & Violence and Edutainment LPs.
After an extended hiatus from the limelight, the "first lady of hardcore" has returned to the mic with Eternal Affairs, and it's like she never left. Her music is just as rough and rugged as heads would expect, powered by top-flight, head-nodding production, and laced with a refreshing "no junk - this is me" attitude that lends sincerity to her words. However, the travesty is that as sharp as this album is, it's non-commercial nature and lack of major label backing will keep Heather B from getting the attention she so assuredly deserves for this stellar effort.
"Live MC," one of the first singles off Eternal Affairs, is a definite jam. For the majority of the piece she cleverly drops rhymes using the letters of the alphabet. Though certainly not an original concept, her witty rhyming combined with the bouncy keyboard-driven track carries off the effort. "One Life" is a thundering collabo with fellow emcee Horse, and Heather B completely tears down the mic for the fiery "You Goin' Down." Producer Luis "Sabor" Tineo contrasts a rumbling bassline with dramatics symphonic strings.
Heather B also recruits a few of Hip-Hop music's finest beatmakers for this effort. DJ Premier finds a way to modify yet another version of one of his uptempo, cut-filled tracks on "Steady Rockin.'" R&B singer Twyla lends her feathery, saccharine voice to the piece as the rapper spits some venomous braggadocio on the track. Then Heather B hooks up with "soul brother number one" Pete Rock for "Dedicated." In keeping with his soulful style, Pete mixes a mellow beat with a vibrant bass groove, reverent humming vocals, and a jazzy piano loop. Lyrically, the femcee rips down her vocals, expounding on her devotion to her art.
In addition to her freestyle prowess, Heather is also an extremely talented rap storyteller. "Gotta Love Me" narrates the dichotomous existence of a drug-dealer who uses his wealth and influence to try to affect positive changes in his community. She's flawless here; her painfully vivid mental images are painted with sharp, descriptive language that compliments the somber tone of the accompaniment. With the catchy, R&B-tinged "What She Don't Know," she expertly recounts the dilemma of telling her best friend that her fiancée is cheating on her.
But what really makes this album special is the artist's high level of introspection and honesty. Throughout her songs she freely and openly weaves together different elements of her life and career which adds considerable sincerity to her music. This genuineness is epitomized in songs like "Nobody Knows You." With dramatic chords rising and falling over a solemn piano melody, she recollects and analyzes how the friends who surrounded her when she was at her peak abandoned her when her career lulled. She's candid and open with her pain, but uses it as motivation to move forward in the future.
All things considered, this LP is definitely one of the most well constructed albums released this year. The production methodology Heather B prefers keeps with the accepted hardcore aesthetic; beats are minimalist and solid, dominated by powerful drums and captivating rhythmic accompaniment. Lyrically, the femcee is capable and versatile, spitting serrated battle raps and crafting engaging, honest stories with superior skill and intensity. Eternal Affairs is nothing less than an exceptional album by one of Hip-Hop's most underrated female emcees. Don't miss it.
Commercial Exception.......2002-04-15
Some rappers can release debut albums that are not only dope, but they're doper than anything you've heard, well, ever. But then they decided to take the jump to TV and movies, and although they're surprisingly good actors, their following albums just aren't the same (e.g. Will Smith, LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, Ice-T). They either change their style to appeal to the "new" hip-hop generation (in other words, they turn hardcore), or they stay true to their style but with undercooked beats and production. One exception to this way is Heather B.
Listening to this album will let you know that The Real World did nothing to get in the way of her flow. You'll hear her doing her thing on tracks like "Live MC" and "Steady Rockin'". "What She Don't Know" is an interesting track about cheating that doesn't sound like what everyone else says (listen to it and you'll find that out), while "One Life" has some of the best rhymes and beats we've heard in a while. There's also the autobiographical "Young, Gifted & Black", as well as "I Will Never Change", which lets us know she'll be here for a while.
This album is also where you'll find guest spots from people who many will deem unknowns, but who ironically turn out to be former Nas secondhand men. Nature helps tell us that the rap game is about "More Than The Music", and Horse (I still can't figure that out) spits lyrics on "One Life".
Overall this album is good except for the production on two tracks. Pete Rock produced "Dedicated", which features Tammy Lucas. Pete's adlibs start to get annoying after a while, and Tammy appears in the chorus, but all she's doing is humming. Pete could've have gotten anybody to do that. Then DJ Premier created "Steady Rockin'", which contains an okay interpolation of Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" sung during the chorus. Also, on both of these tracks, the beats sound like you've heard them a million times before. Primo and Pete can do their thing on their own albums, but on other people's it sounds like they get a little lazy sometimes.
Some people may say Heather's style isn't up to par with today's hip-hop, but I say it's a good piece of work. It's about time we heard another good album from a female MC.
I BE A LIVE M.C.!!! (3.999999 stars).......2002-04-10
First.......I'm a fan of Heather B. from way back when she was rocking with KRS-1 and BDP and before her MTV "Real World" fame. She has 10 plus years in the game and still delivers the underground lyrical heat. A friend said she sounded too much like Eve......lol.....after laughing at him for being young and dumb to underground hip-hop, I told him thats like saying Stevie Wonder sounds too much like Musiq & Glenn Lewis. This is her 3rd CD and I've managed to collect them all. If your looking for a lyrical female MC with battle style rhymes, metaphors and a host of top producers including DJ Premier, Pete Rock and more........then you need this.

Free Jazz Meets World Music.......2004-01-19
Eternal Rhythm is to world music what On the Corner is to fusion. In other words, its a mind blowing experience that redefines the genre. Every instrument from gamelan to flute to yup that's Sonny Sharrock on guitar is explored here. If you are looking for peaceful world music look elsewhere. However, if you are in the mood for a challenging listen that will take you to other places and redefine what jazz means to you get ready. This is by far Don Cherry's best album. The reissue was well worth the wait.
