5 out of 5 stars More of the Great One Indeed!!.......2002-05-22

I was first introduced to Lorez Alexandria as a child. This was one of those many jazz records that was played on the stereo constantly in my house. I never took a real appreciation of her talent until I got older. My father used to always listen to her. Her phrasing was and is such a delight to listen to even today. I still listen to the LP from time to time when I visit my parents. The accompanient of Jimmy Cobb, Wynton Kelly, Louis Haynes and Al McKibbon was a superb choice of sidemen. Everything still sounds just right. I can still remember most of the words to every song on this compilation. This is a vocalist I have introduced to my family now. All I can say is this brings back so many good memories.

5 out of 5 stars Lorez at her peak.......2003-12-31

Lorez Alexandria was one of the most under recognized jazz vocalists of her era. Although highly regarded in jazz music circles (especially in her hometown Chicago and her later home Los Angeles) she was relatively unknown by the wider jazz audience. Lately, however, there has been a resurgence of interest in her work. In December 2003, two of her out-of-print compact discs (released in Japan only) sold on e-bay for $152 each. Her best work was recorded on the Argo-Chess label in Chicago with small ensembles headed by such piano luminaries as Ramsey Lewis, John Young, and King Fleming. The highly recommended "Deep Roots" (or "Deep Loots" the same recording) is only available only in Japan. (Also recommended are her later recordings on Discovery and Muse in the late 80's and 90's; recordings that demonstrate a creative depth and a technical mastery that never diminished.) However, these two recordings for Impulse are among the finest examples of what she was about; deceptively simple, yet highly creative renditions of jazz standards. A silken smooth voice; complete control of vibrato; natural, sultry, delicious phrasing, sublimely subtle improvisations that really swing; that is what you will hear on these important Impulse recordings. Lorez is backed up by a studio big band, featuring a who's who of the greatest jazz musicians playing dynamite arrangements. Audiophiles should be aware that these recordings have been remastered in Japan in 24k bit mapping. But never-the-less, the sound quality on this record is of a very high caliber. Ironically most Lorez Alexandria's recordings are only available in Japan - not even in her hometown of Chicago.
