New Jack Swing
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Being one of the world's most highly regarded solo concert artists, Jones finds it particularly gratifying to continue his robust career on records, the concert stage and television. Aruably the best singer of the Boomer generation, Jack Jones has found the right groove on "New Jack Swing"--an album that's guaranteed wo get your fingers poppin', your toes tappin' and your booty wigglin'. Jones delivers enough vocal acrobatics and emotional juice to earn his third Grammy nomination. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Like the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson is one of the handful of artists that can release an album of their number one singles. Number Ones includes his solo chart toppers in the UK and abroad from the period beginning with his Off the Wall album right up to the new song "One More Chance", a collaboration with R Kelly. The remaining 17 songs on the album are all classics drawn from the disco-soul Off the Wall, the funky Thriller, the good Bad, the safe Dangerous, the semi-best-of History and the weak Invincible. Regardless of whether the bulk of Number Ones has appeared on other greatest hits albums, this is still an incredible selection of Michael Jackson's best music. --Georgina Collins

"NUMBER ONES" REALLY ARE!.......2004-01-18
Michael Jackson is still #1 to a lot of music lovers, and "NUMBER ONES" quickly shows you why! His vocal versatility and unique creativity cannot be denied. This CD has something for everyone, and "One More Chance" is at the top of the list. Jackson faves like "Billie Jean," "Black or White," "You Are Not Alone," "The Earth Song," and "You Rock My World" are also included for good measure, and this Michael Jackson effort may be one of his very best yet. Buy it; you'll be glad you did!
Curse Epic and Tommy M.......2004-01-18
First, before I rip this album a new one I must say that I am a huge Michael Jackson fan/supporter and IF YOU WANT HIS GREATEST HITS YOU HAVE TO BUY ALL HIS ALBUMS :). Number Ones is a pathetic greatest hits collection. Most of the songs on here are cut short. Example: You Are Not Alone starts out with MJ singing on the first note which he does not do on the album version and it fades out way early. One More Chance (the only new song) is the worst song R. Kelly has written for Michael. It's not a bad song, but R. Kelly should have kept it to himself. Michael should have submitted one of his own songs. R. Kelly can write better songs, just look at Cry or You Are Not Alone. One More Chance has a one line chorus and it sounds like it belongs on an R. Kelly record. Another problem with this record is the name Number Ones. Most of these songs didn't make it to number one, in fact many didn't even crack the top 10. If you own all of the albums and you want the song one more chance, just buy the single. I own both, but most people shouldn't bother unless they care about a complete collection. This collection is a weak display of MJ's amazing talent. It basically contains radio versions of his songs so they can put more on the cd. I love michael and know that he is innocent. I can't wait for his new album. I think MJ released this just to fullfil his record contract. Now he can be free and actually get promoted :).
A Superb Collection From The No.1 King Of Pop!.......2004-01-15
As the first few weeks of 2004 are upon us, and I'm sure Michael Jackson will be hoping that this year will bring him better luck than 2003 did. Despite dominating the tabloids with his appearance, the baby-dangling incident and THAT Martin Bashir interview, Michael Jackson still remains the King of Pop. There's some people who are famous. There are some people who are superstars. There are some people who are icons - and then there's Michael Jackson. Arguably the most famous entertainer alive, Jackson's 30 years reign on the charts is unchallenged.
So that's precisely why Michael's latest release, "Number Ones," is essential for all fans of brilliant music. Since the early 1980's Jackson has captivated the world with his music. We've had fun dancing to his music and cried to his emotional ballads, and that's why he's the greatest male performer ever. His talent is undeniable, and even though he's gone a bit off the rails in recent years, the world and his die-hard fans have never forgotten the music which is what matters the most.
First off, Number Ones is a title that tricks the buyer somewhat. There are eighteen songs on this album, and Jackson has had no where near eighteen US No.1 hits. He's had a total of 13 US No.1 singles, and his last was in 1995. Michael has had 7 UK No.1 hit singles, and his last was in 1997. His first UK No.1 hit was in May 1981 with "One Day In Your Life," which isn't included on here strangely enough. Michael's sixth US No.1 "Say Say Say" is also not included, and I have the UK version which includes "Human Nature" instead of "Man In The Mirror." Silly different regions and record companies! What is the point? Why not just have a complete tracklisting?! Also, "Ben," Michael's first ever US No.1, is included on the US version, but not on the UK version. Instead the UK gets "Blood On The Dancefloor," Michael's last UK No.1 single.
Apart from these minor hiccups, all of Michael's biggest and most popular hits are included here. The album opens with "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You." Both songs are from Michael's debut album Off The Wall and both hit the US top spot. "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Thriller" are up next and all from Thriller, Michael's signature album. 50 million copies shifted worldwide, and nothing's going to take over it any time soon! Up next, we have six songs from the follow up to Thriller. Bad was Michael's third album, released in 1987 and sold 25 million copies as well. The songs from Bad on here are "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "Smooth Criminal," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man In The Mirror" and "Dirty Diana." All these songs were huge hits and all were US No.1's, apart from Smooth Criminal.
After this we get "Black Or White," which was a huge US and UK No.1 hit. It's the only song on this compilation album from Michael's fourth album - 1991's Dangerous. "You Are Not Alone" was one of Michael's biggest hits ever, and is next on here, followed by Michael's biggest selling UK single, "Earth Song." No.1 for six weeks and shifting more than 1 million copies this masterpiece is a perfect world peace anthem. Michael's 2001 comeback single "You Rock My World" follows. It wasn't a No.1, so by rights it shouldn't be included here, but it's a great track, so why not? "Break Of Dawn" wasn't even released as a single, so it's got no excuse to be here! It's from Michael's trans-atlantic chart topping Invincible album from 2001. "One More Chance" is Michael's latest single, and will not top the charts by my 'expert' predictions. "Ben" closes the album, which goes back to the very beginning of his career.
OVERALL GRADE: 8/10
I think it was a wise move for Michael Jackson to release Number Ones. It provides new fans in their teens a chance to get to know Michael's best music, for those who were too young to be digging it when 1995's "HIStory" was released, because let's face it, even people in their early teens love Michael's music! I think some minor adjustments could have been made to the tracklisting to improve this album, but it's still not a bad collection and definitely worth the money. Upon its release this album didn't even crack the US Top 10 - Britney stormed to No.1 that week, but in the UK, Number Ones did just that, and went straight to the top of the charts! All in all a brilliant record to add to any Michael Jackson collection.
Always Number One in My Book!.......2004-01-14
This album is absolutely fablous. It showcases the best of Michael's work in the eighties, nineties, and 21st century. Every single song is great and expresses the true genius of this extremely talented and intelligent man. Furthermore, the songs "Man in the Mirror" and "Earth Song" show the humanitarian side of this wonderful human being that those of us that have been his devoted fans for years have known about for a long time. Also, for all you eighties kids out there these songs just might remind you of a simpler time (I know it does for me). Now, there has been some confusion about the track listing because only the first 13 songs were number one hits in the U.S., however "Earth Song" was number one in the U.K., "You Rock My World" was number one in France, and "Break of Dawn" was number one somewhere, I think it was Australia. For some reason Americans seem to think that their charts (and perhaps the charts of Britain) are the only ones that matter. Whether these songs are number one or not is irrelevant though (except for the title) because these are his absolute best songs musically and lyrically. Furthermore, the new song "One More Chance" is wonderful and I truly believe that it could have been yet another number one if people would not let the recent media circus cloud their judgement. This is a genius, megastar at his very best and I highly recommend it to any music fan or music collector. This is definitely a must have for any collector. Here's to hoping there is going to be much more amazing music from this fabulous musician! Long Live Michael Jackson!!!!
This Collection of Hits Truly Is Number "One"!.......2003-12-24
Despite the recent controversy surrounding his personal life, Michael Jackson has long been known as the King Of Pop, and with good reason. For most pop stars, their time in the spotlight lasts maybe 2-3 years before they are reduced to guest appearances on weekly sit-coms or the occassional "info-mercial". This is not true of Jackson, whos reign at the top has carried him through the past 2+ decades since the onset of his solo career after leaving the Jackson Five.
This collection of Number One hits is therefore a must have for any fan of the pop genre. Since the 1980's, Jacksons eclectic, diverse style has seen many landmarks in the music industry, setting new standards, breaking new ground and re-inventing a style that was in its infancy when Jackson came into his own. His pioneering sound created a whole new generation of music and for that he was rewarded the title "King of Pop".
The album features 18 of Jackson most beloved songs, featured in the order which they originally made it to number one. Included on the album are some of his largest breakout hits like "Billy Jean" and Beat It" which both became such huge hits that they are immediately recognizable by audiences today.
The song "Thriller", which also emerged early in Jackson's solo career, firmly planted the superstars reputation as a serious talent in the industry. Not only was Jackson re-inventing the style of music, he was setting a new standard unprecedented in the industry at that time. Music television was only a few years old when the video for "Thriller", a 10+ minute short film, was released for the first time. The video, which was so well produced that it rose immediately to the head of the video industry, set a new level of quality in the genre that artists have been struggling to match since.
The album also features a number of other large hits for Michael, including the songs which added to the early controversy in Jackson's professional career. "Black or White", a song about racial equality again put Jackson in the spotlight for his controversal portrayal of violence against authority. "Bad", "Smooth Criminal", and "Dirty Diana" also feature Jackson's hard driving rythems and smooth, sometimes aggressive lyrics covering a range of topics that has often lead to speculation and ridicule by the press, while at the same time leaving his world-wide hordes of fans clammoring for more.
Some of the more poignant pieces in this collection include songs like "Man In the Mirror", a song where Michael points the finger at himself while pondering the choices in his life.
In all, the album is a great collection of all his number one hits, and is a great look back at the man who created a genre that has grown since he stepped to the front of the class, but never outgrown his talent. With the onset of this generations pop superstars like Justin Timberlake, Brittany Spears and Chrsitina Aguilera, it is a further testimony to his talent and sheer ability that Michael Jackson has remained such a huge part of not only the genre, but the music industry as a whole. Love him or hate him, his talent is unmistakable and unquestionable.
This compilation of hits is a great addition to any music collection, and is a must have for any Jackson fan. For anyone who isn't already familiar with his music, this collection is a great introduction into the mind and soul of a man who reshaped the music industry. Jackson truly is the King of Pop, and through this album, you can enter the gates to his kingdom. Give this album a listen, you won't be disappointed.

Legacy is the right title for this album. Boyz II Men were the original, modern-day boy band, predating both 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. Heavily influenced by doo-wop groups such as the Platters and the Dells and developed by ex-New Edition member Michael Bivins, Boyz II Men quickly rose to heavyweight status after the foursome's 1991 debut, Cooleyhighharmony, their success based on romantic ballads and strong vocals. However, they lacked the charisma and looks to really make an impact on the world, and they're perhaps the only group that could be described as "quietly" selling 35 million records. This collection of their best moments concentrates on their strengths as crooning Cupids, exemplified by their massive hit and classic ballad "End of the Road" (taken from the Boomerang soundtrack). "Hey Lover," featuring LL Cool J, is as energetic as the album gets. Legacy is unabashedly assembled for lovers of slow, romantic bedroom soul. --Jake Barnes

Excellent CD. All their biggest hits. Great for any Boyz II Men fan!
Legacy Of Great Vocalists! Need to Expand CD!.......2007-04-30
'Legacy' by Boyz II Men was merely a decent compilation when it was first released, but with only 13 tracks, I felt short changed, and wasn't about to buy the re-released 2 disc version. I've followed Boyz II Men since 1991, and like many fans, have all of the CDs. With that in mind, I decided to create 'The Ultimate Boyz II Men Collection' that covers 1991 - 2002 perfectly. Here's the tracklisting, which results in a 80 minute single disc masterpiece...
1. Motownphilly
2. Uhh Ahh
3. It's So Hard To Say Goodbye...
4. End Of The Road (fr.'Boomerang' SDTK)
5. I'll Make Love To You
6. On Bended Knee
7. Water Runs Dry
8. One Sweet Day - Live Version! (w/Mariah)
9. Doin' Just Fine
10. Four Seasons Of Loneliness
11. A Song For Mama (fr.'Soul Food' SDTK)
12. I Will Get There (fr.'Prince Of Egypt' SDTK)
13. Pass You By
14. Thank You In Advance
15. The Color Of Love
16. That's Why I Love You
17. So Amazing (fr.'The Hurricane' SDTK)
BONUS TRACK 18. Sara Smile (2004)
So there you have it, the Ultimate Boyz II Men on a single CD!
Enjoy making this collection at home!

This CD Is Just Whatever.......2006-06-21
Boy II Men were extremely hot back in the day and I always wondered why. I tried to give them a chance by getting their "II" album, but I just couldn't get into them. They had a few good songs out, but, other than that, their music was quite lame. Not enough soul and not enough funk. They never got down and dirty. You get tired of the harmonizing because it's done all the time. None of these guys were attractive either. They just weren't, especially the one with the glasses who sang like he had a bunch of snot up his nose. My friends and I used to look at pictures of the group and they would say, "Yeah, that one's cute, that one's cute, this one is foooiine!" I just couldn't see the attractiveness anywhere. Their looks were mediocre and so was the music. "I'll Make Love To You" and "One Sweet Day" have to be the worse songs ever. I heard both of them on the radio the other day and it made me sick to the stomach. These guys are long gone, but thousands of other sorry guy groups of sprung up to replace them.

Album Description
The 2CD The Essential Michael Jackson takes you on a journey from budding star, to iconic legend and allows you to immerse yourself in the musical and emotional development of each track defining the story of a global superstar.
Michael Jackson needs no introduction, as part of the Jackson 5 he helped make up a remarkable musical family and one of the biggest pop phenomenons of the early 70s. The Jacksons' infectious brand of funky soul and now iconic stage presence reached out globally and made them and Michael international stars.
As the success of the band grew, Michael branched out with his own solo career first launching with "Got to be There" and then "Rockin' Robin". The momentum started to grow with the release of more successful singles and, as the hype surrounding the Jackson 5 slowed down towards the late 70s, Michael continued to develop and grow as an artist. With the release of Off the Wall, an immaculately crafted set of funky disco-pop, smooth soul, and lush, sentimental pop ballads, Michael cemented his place as a global star. The 1980s were a career-defining period with his instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and loads of sheer star power Michael Jackson was unstoppable. The 1982 album Thriller became the biggest selling album of all time and combined his musical genius with an exceptional and ahead of its time music video epic. Bad (1987) was released with enormous public anticipation and spawned another succession of hit singles with "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Man in the Mirror."
Customer Reviews:
As you would expect -- Absolute fun.......2007-03-25
This is a wonderful compilation of "essentials" for the Michael Jackson aficionado--one thing that is really fun about it is that the first disc starts with his earliest work and then proceeds linearly onward. Basically, you get to listen to him grow older and hear how his voice and style change. It's very interesting.
To sum up: you get two wonderful discs with a wonderful compilation of the main hits of Michael Jackson--if you have a favorite song of his chances are it's on one of these discs. If you want a more complete collection you might try the Michael Jackson Ultimate Collection of course, but as I own both I must say that I nonetheless find this a very convenient collection for just grabbing to take along with me.
Great! And God bless dear Michael by the way.
Michael Jackson re-discovered!.......2007-03-24
Even though I'm only 25, I grew up listening to Michael Jackson. I was singing, twirling & grabbing my crotch like him when I was 10 years old. As I got older, my musical tastes shifted and my once beloved MJ cd/casettes started to gather dust.
Flash forward to a few days ago! I came across this CD and I KNEW I had to have it. It had been YEARS since I listened to the Michael Jackson classics and I just knew that this CD would make my day ;) I was growing tired of today's radio hits, but how can anyone get enough of Michael?
I loved hearing the Jackson 5's ABC & I Want You Back. Even though I'm not from that time, I still enjoyed Michael's earlier stuff. I also liked hearing Blame It On The Boogie, Shake Your Body Down To The Ground and Off The Wall. These are all GREAT tap your toe songs! The song, Can You Feel It, is also one of the many gems on this cd. Of course, many hit songs from the albums Thriller & Bad are also included. Many MJ compilations contain the same songs (Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man In The Mirror) but it is refreshing to ALSO hear Dirty Diana, Leave Me Alone and Smooth Criminal. We are also treated to hear the lost hits from Michael's Dangerous album, including In The Closet, Who Is It and Dangerous (the album's exiting track). I feel bad, but I usually skip You Are Not Alone & You Rock My World. Those songs are only "Ho Hum" to me.
Overall, this is a wonderful CD. I've been listening to it in my car for 3 straight days. If you don't have any of your old MJ albums anymore, this is the CD to buy to have all the hits again.
Definately The King Of Pop.......2006-07-18
One should never judge the accomplishments made by an artist based solely on what one reads and sees in the news. How many singers can honestly say they have been in the spotlight for 3 decades? Very few can and are around to tell about it. It is unfortunate that many celebrities are tarnished by their lifestyles but at the same time these people have left a mark on world-wide culture. Michael Jackson is one such artist. Beginning in his youth in the 70s, MJ has gone from child performer to adult superstar. Few people over the age of 30 can deny that they have never heard of the greatest selling album of all time in the world : Michael Jackson's "Thriller". No fewer than 9 of the 11 tracks on the album were hits in the early 80s. Although his future albums never reached the awesome success seen by Thriller, no one can deny the genius in many of Jackson's recordings. The Essential Michael Jackson presents just enough of MJ's hits (everything from the J5 to little known songs from the recent past) to satisfy any fan. However, Say Say Say (a duet MJ had with Paul McCartney) is sorely missing. I have never even run across the album the song was originally released on. Although we may never again see a resurgence of Michael Jackson mania, listeners can relive what are fabulous songs by a gifted entertainer.
Excellent Compilation!.......2006-06-28
Greatest Hits albums are always difficult to rate. Realistically, no compilation will ever be able to gather every last "hit" from a particular artist, and "The Essential Michael Jackson" is no exception. And despite its (very few) limitations, "Essential" does an A+ job.
For starters, the amount of material in this package is quite staggering; it extends from the early #1's of the J5 under Motown up to Michael's latest solo work for a total of 38 songs. Ordered chronologically by single release date, "Essential" shows the impressive transformation of a child star into one of the most impressive musical forces in pop-music today. But despite the stylistic evolution and technological adaptions made along the way, the energy and emotion (neither insufficient nor overpowering) remain at the core of each and every song.
The first disc begins with the Jackson 5ive's first three number ones, as well as some of Michael's early solo work. Then, the J5 become The Jacksons, switching labels and becoming disco icons with hits like "Shake Your Body" and "Blame It On The Boogie". Of course, Michael finds the biggest success behind solo albums "Off the Wall" and "Thriller", which dominate the last half of this CD.
By disc number two, Michael is no longer splitting duty with his siblings and is 100% solo. "Bad" and "Dangerous" take up all but two tracks on this disc, which makes sense because those two LPs are both studio albums and greatest hits packages, considering the majority of the songs from those albums turned platinum. Lastly, the biggest hit of "HIStory" and "Invincible" round out the last two tracks.
Naturally, I didn't take the time to write out all of the tracks from "Essential", but just by the few I mentioned you can already grasp at the notion that this collection is pure platinum. If you're a casual Michael Jackson fan, this is a must buy. In a couple hours of listening, you'll understand why this man was the juggernaut he was.
"Essential" isn't perfect, however. If you own one or more of the "Big Four", then you're most likely better off skipping this. As those albums make up 90% of anything with "Michael Jackson" and "Greatest Hits" in the same title, you'd be better to just grab all four of those albums if you haven't done so already. There are a number of "Misses" that you'll be glad you shelled out extra for.
Also, the balance in "Essential" is great. Solo to group, ballad to dance hit, this is a very well constructed compilation. Where it fumbles the ball is in the source material. As said before, Michael's first four Epic solo albums have the lion's share of representation, which means that you now have another CD with "Billie Jean", "Beat It", and "Thriller". Meanwhile, the under-appreciated "HIStory" gets only 1 track, as does "Invincible". Granted, they didn't have quite the effect that the "Big Four" had on the music industry, but after doing such a great job of chronicling Michael's discography, the last decade of his career is basically glossed over.
Perhaps an additional disc was needed, which would allot more space not only for more recent songs, but also allow for additional songs in that didn't make the cut. Just a thought.
Regardless of the complaints, however, "Essential" does its job of presenting both 38 great tracks and providing a timeline of the most successful artist to date. And in focusing on the biggest hits, its only reasonable that some great undervalued songs aren't included. It's a shame, but can't diminish the value of this collection. If you're out for the ultimate Michael Jackson hits compilation, this is it.
Happy listening.
Let Michael Jackson touch you........2006-04-22
The man just keeps making magic, and with this album he manages to do it once more. Michael Jackson has always touched me in a special way, in a special place. And I'm pretty sure he's touched many people in the same way. This guy's gonna be big some day- I just know it! His music just keeps climbing the charts. One time I farted in an elevator. First off, I'd like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to let me talk to you about the sixties. You make me feel... very, very special. [take 2 tablets with food for voices in head]. And might I say what a lovely tie you're wearing, Mrs. Crabtree? [...call the police...] For the love of God, just do what they say!!!

A Must for Keith Sweat fans.......2007-02-20
This album is a must-have for Keith Sweat fans! Unless you've bought his other albums when they were originally released, there's no reason to buy any of his other albums if you have this one. Just about all of his popular tracks are on this album, aside from a few of his obscure hits. "Make It Last Forever" is a favorite for anyone that enjoys slow jams from the old school days, and "I Want Her" should bring back memories of the late '80's high school dances. This album also has "A Right And A Wrong Way" and "How Deep Is Your Love", which were a couple of his really popular slow jams. No Keith Sweat fan should be without this one in his/her collection, and the album contains enough tracks to keep the CD going for more than just a short drive.
All I can say is "aaahhhh".......2007-01-11
the perfect Friday or Saturday, sitting compfy, sipping something good, and listen! Seriously good old-school
New Jack Swing Loathrio At His Best.......2006-12-29
Keith Sweat is one of the premeire R&B soul singers in the game. Although Mr. Sweat hasn't released a CD of new material in four years, I'm really anxious to see what he could do with the writing skills of Ne-Yo, Sean Garret, Johnta Austin and the production of The Underdogs. The Best of Keith Sweat: Make You Sweat compiles most of the tracks that made R&B crooner Keith Sweat one of the most popular and influential of the '90s new jack swingers. Along with Teddy Riley, Tony! Toni! Toné!, and Bell Biv Devoe, Sweat defined the forward-looking but history-mindful new jack sound that combined old-school aesthetics with hip-hop rhythms. Culled from all five of his consecutive number one R&B albums, the tracks here include such ubiquitous radio hits as "I Want Her" and "Make You Sweat" along with stellar singles including "Nobody" and solid album cuts like "My Body.
HALL OF FAME.......2006-11-07
This superb collection will show you why Keith Sweat should be a ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Hall of Fame Songwriter and should be a Grammy-winning record producer, but he's not. Even with over 13 million albums sold (including LSG and Silk's debut). He has worked with a variety of producers from Alton "Wookie" Stewart to Bobby Wooten to Hall of Famer Teddy Riley to Lionel Job (Joe Public) and the one constant is his success, hit after hit, year after year the hits keep on coming. His style never changed. It never needed to. He knows what his fans expect and he knows how to give it to them in spades. This man may be the most underrated soul singer of all time outside of Jackie Wilson. I can say that because Al Green, Teddy Pendergrass, Curtis Mayfield, Barry White, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Ronald Isley, even El Debarge, Brian McKnight, R. Kelly, and Babyface they all get the props they deserve, but when will Keith Sweat be known as the Hall Of Fame Soul Artist that he is? Maybe when he surpasses 15 million CD's sold. Which won't be that long.
This isn't what I had hoped for........2006-08-12
I bought this c.d. because I like the song "Nobody" and it was the only good song on here. I read other reviews about how good this c.d. is and it is actually a waste but that is okay. There is only about 2 songs on there worth listening to so if you plan to buy it, I suggest you listen to the samples first. -heather-

Already big stars courtesy of their debut, Cooleyhighharmony, the Boyz blasted off into superstar orbit on this CD. Of course those lush harmonies had a little something to wrap themselves around; namely the magnificent ballads "I'll Make Love to You"(which broke the chart record of the earlier "End of the Road" ) and "On Bended Knee." Corny? Si. Wholesome? And how. Obviously that didn't stop the biggest male vocal act of the '90s from crooning all the way to the bank, several million times over. --Amy Linden

Good.......2007-05-12
I loved Boyz II Men when they were out. This CD is a winner. I love it.
ON BENDED KNEE.........2007-01-19
This song alone brings back special memories of high school and first love. On Bended Knee is one of my favorite songs EVER.
These 4 voices blended better than any group I've ever heard. Man! R&B music ain't the same anymore!
Without a doubt one of the best R&B disc's released ever.......2007-01-04
While most artists suffer a sohphmoe slump Boyz II Men did just the opposite and scored home run with the classic II. II is a carefully constructed crowd pleaser, accentuating all of the finest moments from their hit debut. While there are some high-energy dance tracks, the album's main strength is its slower numbers, where the group's vocals soar. The slow jams Trying Times & 50 Candles are excllent and can easily hang with any of the songs they've ever recorded. As far as the singles I'll Make Love To You, Yesterday, On Bended Knee and Water Runs Dry they need only word to describe them which is classic.
Still a favorite..........2006-11-02
Boyz II Men was probably my favorite musical act when I was growing up. I knew every word to just about every one of their songs, and this album in particular was always playing in my room. Starting things off with `Thank You', a song that's sure to get you moving in the right direction, Boyz II Men capitalized on their impressive harmonies right from the beginning and delivered 13 impressive tracks to serve as a complete musical experience.
Tracks like the aforementioned `Thank You', `All Around the World' and the funky `Vibin' give us a throwback to `Cooleyhighharmony', giving us those slick beats and hip-hop vibe, but it's on tracks like the chart topping `I'll Make Love To You' and `On Bended Knee' where the boyz really shine. Songs like `Water Runs Dry' hits every note right and comes close to sending chills down the spine.
The two tracks that stand out the most for me is the laid back cool `U Know' which takes the cake as the best hip-hop inspired track here, but it can't hold a candle to '50 Candles' which is just dripping with pure sensuality and sets the right kind of mood if you know what I mean. Great album, perfect addition to any music collection...after all these years it's still my favorite album by the crooning quartet.
Repeat.......2006-10-04
In Boyz II Men's sophomore album, II, they make attempts to create their own identities with writing and producing this time around escaping producer Dallas Austin and founder Michael Bivins. This LP begins with the deepest of gratitude on "Thank You" produced by the group and Dallas Austin. Both "All Around The World" and "U Know" are mid-tempo tracks with a hip-hop flavor to them, but neither of the two is strikingly memorable or highlights. One thing they do is provide another angle for Boyz II Men. For a more relaxing environment, "Vibin'" has a rather simple instrumentation, lyrics and vocals. "I Sit Away" is a hidden gem with a mid-tempo flow with soothing lyrics written by Tony Rich and production by veteran L.A. Reid and Tony Rich. Stepping into a more modern jazz feel "Jezzebel" strengthen the groups range and abilities as the album is nearing a completed overall goal. Over a piano solo, Boyz II Men harmonize on "Khilil (Interlude)" to shift the gears down to their overpowering abilities to formulate ballads that begins with "Trying Times" written and produced by Wanya Morris, Tim Kelley & Bob Robinson. Hit maker Babyface lends a hand on two of the thirteen track album with smash singles and highlights "I'll Make Love To You" and "Water Runs Dry". Heavyweights Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis add a touch of love and mood setting material on "On Bended Knee". "50 Candles" drives this album to epic proportions with its thriving bass and lyrical content "...feels like one of those nights..." They show and prove why for their time there are no other male groups that can compare to their beautiful harmony and range as on "Yesterday" they perform accapella. If real talent that you seek, members Shawn, Michael, Nathan and Wanya has uncompromising talent for any age, era, or time that you can enjoy for long time.

Missing disc 4!.......2007-06-27
I am not thrilled. I received this box set today. It was wrapped in plastic, but it was missing CD number 4! It has a plethora of M.J.'s music, and originally I thought it was a bargain...until I found the missing CD. I plan to return it.
Great Collection.......2007-02-03
I know that you can't put every single thing this great artist did. It's almost complete. Great box set.
Mike's the Man .......2006-12-28
This is the one you want to get if you want to listen to a good singer sing songs you can listen to over and over it a truly great collection of michael jackson from beginning to end this gives you all the really good songs that michael has been involved with and the dvd is also good too. There are so many good songs on here from "billyjean" to "i want you back" all of them.
Great Looking Set!.......2006-08-30
First, before I get into this set, let me say that the previous reviewer has a right to his opinion. That being said, THIS IS A REVIEW OF A PRODUCT, NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK FORUM!
Now, to the product itself! While I haven't purchased it yet, it looks like a great collection! There have been several so-called greatest hits collections for Michael Jackson over the years but this is probably THE BEST I've ever seen for this artist! It has stuff from even his days with The Jacksons!
Regardless of what you think of the man personally, this is a review of the art and music, not the man himself! I have my views on MJ but this isn't the place for it!
As a fan of music, I would highly recommend this piece even at its high price because it looks like it would be worth it!
Michael Jackson's "The Ultimate Collection".......2006-07-06
This is a dazzling collection of Michael's work from the early years to recent times. It has many famous songs as well as a few songs less widely known but nevertheless wonderful. The variety of the songs keeps you wanting to hear each track after the other. These songs are definitely catchy and usually have a tendency to get stuck in your head. There are songs of all types from the sweet "Rock With You" to the ever classic "Thriller".
Each song seems to have it's own special quality and rhythm and uniquness and rarity. How can you compare "Bad" to "Man in the Mirror"? It's like apples and oranges. This collection is a 5 disc set. It includes some songs from "The Wiz" along with all the other songs on the various cd's. Disc 5 is a DVD of a "Dangerous" tour with the following songs: "Jam," "Billie Jean," "Man in the Mirror," "Thriler," '"Wanna be Starting Something," "Just Can't Stop Loving You," "She's Outta my Life," "Human Nature," "Smooth Criminal" and probably a couple I've forgotten.
If you're a Michael Jackson fan or just love a good beat, then this is the collection for you. -- Sophie Milkowski, age 11

Good come back cd afer his first.........2007-05-21
Not all the tracks are great but, that is R&b most of the time. This came out in 1993 the early years of R&B so, songs like Sex Me, It Seems Like You Ready, Bump n Grind and my favorite, Your Body's Callin was all good because, it was the early days for that topic.

When Kelly was the man.......2006-12-10
I remember being twelve years old when the 12 Play album came out. At the time there really was no other male R&B singer doing it like Mr. Kelly expect for my boy Ralph Tresvant. As I've said in other reviews, R.Kelly's ballads are what make the CD work. Of course everyone knows the singles Your Body's Callin ,It Seems Like You're Ready, Bump & Grind, Sex Me Parts 1 & 2 but there was also the self titled track, the heart-felt cover of Sadie and the sentimental For You. The up-tempo stuff is really weak but the ballads are on-point.
The Bomb.......2006-11-17
This CD is a must to have! Songs like Sex Me are interesting, if not challenging to listen to. But the beat is excellent. 12 Play being my favourite of this CD.

Heart Break..........2007-06-02
A great disc by the young men in the late 80's. My favorite: If it isn't love. 4 stars overall!
Great talent showcased by great producers.......2006-08-05
Who would have ever thought that a small song done for a hum-drum movie would have led to such a classic pairing of performers and producers? Let me refresh your memories:
In 1987, the movie "Dragnet" starring Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks hit the theatres. All in all, it was a sad remake of a classic TV show. The only bright spot was a song on the soundtrack, a song that showcased 4 performers who were trying to redefine themselves after so much childhood success. That group was New Edition, and the song was entitled "Helplessly In Love". The thing that made this song so different was its composition. Instead of bubble-gum lyrics over a poppy-synth track, it was done with tight harmonies and layered music. This sound, created by producing phenoms Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis led us to the breakout album "Heart Break".
Not content with letting NE rest on their previous laurels, Jam and Lewis set them free with the confident, brash swagger that accompanied the boys in the latter part of their teen years. Starting off with a strong statement in the song "That's the Way We're Livin'" and jumping just as strongly into "This Is Where It All Started" got the album off to a rollicking start. That's when J&L and NE gave everyone a taste of their newfound soulful sound with "If It Isn't Love". What a great song, and definitely still as fresh today as it was almost 20 years ago.
Some of the filler tracks like "Crucial" and "My Kind Of Girl" are good to keeep the mood going, and then the album gives us its first complete surprise.
Let me state for the record (and I'm a 40 year old guy who's heard a lot of music) that "Can You Stand The Rain" is one of the best songs ever written. Period. I listen to this song even today and it wells me up. Jam and Lewis use Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill so effectively on the leads with Mike, Ricky and Ronnie backing them up with tightly layered vocals that anyone wanting to do a single song study of how to put together an R&B song could use this as a model. "Coming Home" slows the mood down even more to get us ready for "Boys To Men". Another great, unexpectedly soulful rendition.
I bought this album in New Jersey soley on the strength of "If It Isn't Love", and listened to it start to finish twice on my drive back to the Northern Virginia area. It still has a place near my CD player, and many of the songs occupy a place in my heart. There are probably 3 albums to purchase if you ever want to completely experience the genious of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; Hearsay by Alexander O'Neal, Affair by Cherelle, and this one. It is not to be missed.
1988's Coming of age classic..........................2006-06-25
The summer of 1988 belonged to New Edition and Bobby Brown. For NE, it started with the " If it is'nt Love " video. That video had every teenage ladies man practicing those dance steps in hopes of getting one of the dime pieces that New Edition could get. Other hits includes Crucial, Coming Home, Boys to Men, NE Heartbreak and You're not my kind of girl. The only down side to this joint is that it did not have the NE Heartbreak remix on it. This album also introduced Johnny Gill who was a perfect vocal match to Ralph and Ricky's high pitched voices.
5 Stars Without A Doubt.......2006-06-03
In my opinion this is New Edition's best CD and one of the best Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis productions to date during the height of their production genius.
I grew up on New Edition and even though Bobby Brown left for his own short lived success, thank goodness it didn't effect the longevity of the group and bringing in Johnny Gill was a "Perfect Combination". Not only did it add greatness to the group but later helped his own solo career which was mediocre before he joined New Edition.
This CD came out when I was in the 9th grade and lastest through my 10th grade year. I loved all of the singles that were released but it wasn't until the mid to late 1990's that I finally heard the whole CD. My favorite song is "Boys to Men". I'm assuming that's where Michael Bivens got the name for the group "Boyz II Men". I liked the song then and even more now that I have a son. I think every young man should listen to it. The lyrics are very uplifting.
I give this CD 5 stars without a doubt.

This album contains my favorite song in the world "Can You Stand The Rain". If you were a teenager in the late 80's then you have to remember this album. If It Isn't Love was a staple Nu Jack club hit. But for me the song that made this Album was Can You stand The Rain. This track showcases Ralph's silky voice and New Edition harmony.Johnny Gill was a perfect addition to the group as he brought a more mature sound. This is a must have.

Although his first solo record tanked, this release looked like the beginning of a superstar career. Brown, a former lead vocalist with New Edition (he was replaced by Johnny Gill, but both men participate in most NE reunions) has an appealing, if somewhat grainy, voice. It's a good match for the hip-hop beats that underpin some of the best songs here, especially "My Prerogative," which at the time sounded like an anthem. His ability to deftly merge R&B's upscale and hip-hop street esthetic (both Teddy Riley and Babyface produce tracks on this CD) changed the role of the rake hero. Sadly, this was Brown's lone significant musical moment as a solo artist. Except for marrying Whitney Houston, his life since has become a skein of self-destructive activities. --Martin Johnson

He Was Good.......2007-04-15
Before Bobby Brown became Mr. Houston and spent more time in the headlight cause of troubles with the law, Marital problems and a drug addiction he was actually a very good musician. First he was part of the boyband New Edition, and then went solo and while his second album "Don't Be Cruel" was released by 1988 he was a superstar. Kind of Usher Raymond of the late 80's, Good dancer, singer and entertainer and with lethal songwriters such as l.A Reid and Babyface that knew how to write a hit single, it made him the best of R&B of his time. "Don't Be Cruel" mixes both uptempo New Jack Swing with occasional rap (making Bobby one of the first successful singers to combine the two) and then some traditional bedroom romanticism from his early days with New Edition. This album spawned an amazing numbers of hits, the title track only reached the #8 place but was a big hit worlwide, "My Prerogative" reached the the top of the billboard charts and later Britney Spears made a silly cover of it too. Catchy uptempo "Every Little Step" reaching #3 and the two more laidback romantic "Roni" #3 and "Rock Wit'cha" #7. If that wasn't enough Bobby also made the soundtrack to the new Ghostbusters movie and had another hit with "On Our Own" at #2 but unfortunately it doesn't appear on this album. The album continues with "I'll Be Good To You", "Take It Slow", "All Day All Night" and "I Really Love You Girl" where only one is uptempo and the rest ballads/slow jamz. Unfortunately there are only 9 songs of this album if you don't count the intro and outro but the material present on the album is top notch, making it Bobby Brown's greatest and only essential album of his career (But third album "Bobby" is defenitely alright). If you enjoy this album, check out Guy, Bell Biv DeVoe and Tony! Toni! Toné! all simular kind of music, almost equally good.
Just Plain Classic.......2007-02-17
Hearing this album again after quite a while took me back to my 8th grade year. The songs are just wonderful. This is easily the best original album Bobby Brown made. There are so many songs on here that you are sure to remember if you listened to Top 40 music around the time of its release.
The album is just plain classic.
Don't Be Cruel..........2007-02-03
Mr. Brown was in top form during this phase of his life/career. A great album...he was definitely on his game...Five stars for Bobby Brown...
Like him or not, there's no bringing down this album.......2006-11-06
When Bobby Brown gets talked about these days, it's mostly about the trouble that he's constantly in. However, this is a great album that will want to make you forget about all of that and just party like it's 1988. It's not absoulutely perfect; some of the non-hits can feel like filler for people who haven't heard them a lot, but songs like "Don't Be Cruel", "Roni", "Rock Wit'cha", and "Every Little Step" are some of the best New-Jack Swing ever.
His prerogative.......2006-04-20
Bobby Brown,a member of New Edition, began his solo career in 1986 when the group released their fourth album UNDER THE BLUE MOON. Whitney Houston's future husband put out his debut hit GIRLFRIEND that year, and it sure does have the New Edition sound. With his second solo release, this album,Brown catapulted to superstardom. Hits from this album include DON'T BE CRUEL(not the Elvis Presley-Cheap Trick hit),RONI,MY PREROGATIVE and ROCK WIT'CHA. In 1988,when this album was released,New Edition released their fifth album HEARTBREAK. When Brown departed the group, his shoes were filled by Johnny Gill, who had a few pre-NE hits like PERFECT COMBINATION with Stacy Lattisaw. In addition to NE,Brown's MCA Records labelmates include Elton John,Tom Petty,The Jets and Patti LaBelle. Brown's fellow NE member Ralph Tresvant would pursue a solo career as well and the other three members Ricky Bell,Michael Bivins and Ronnie Devoe would spin themselves off as Bell Biv Devoe. Boston native Brown married Houston on July 18,1992 in Houston's native New Jersey. In their marriage of nearly fourteen years, they both have battled drug and alcohol problems and physical abuse. It's amazing the marriage lasted this long despite all that. Also,in the case of Houston,an R&B diva with a #1 debut album,no one would imagine she go through all that hell!

In 1990, it was still fairly novel to mix R&B songcraft with overpowering hip-hop beats, so this spinoff by New Edition members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe seemed innovative and exciting. Sadly it hasn't aged well. None of the three are compelling singers, and they lack the ability to plead for love effectively (anyone can demand love, but a true soulman has to convince a reluctant participant). Nor are they imaginative rappers--neither their words nor their delivery stand out. But this disc came before the likes of Missy Elliott, Puff Daddy, Jermaine Dupri, or Dallas Austin made a big impact on the scene. As such it's a fine document of black teenage lust during the Gulf War months. --Martin Johnson

Groundbreaking in style and R&B/hiphop..........................2007-05-04
BBD kicked open the 90's with this timeless banger. No one expected these three of New Edition to be this good and dope. The production from Spiderman & Freeze and PE's Bomb Squad set this joint up for success. Many an act would take peices of their style, such as Jodeci, TLC, SWV and others. The smoothed out mental dress in back in style thanks to Usher, Kanye and just about every R & B artist today.

Not New Edition anymore!!!.......2007-03-19
It was in the MTV era( when they actually played music )when i heard a beat that made me stop...it was Poison by BBD. That was just the begining for me and this album. i was just starting to DJ back then and i was always looking for the next heater for the dance floor. BBD gave me more than one, in fact they gave us all music that to this day is still being requested and played well after 12:00AM...their songs are still heaters!!!"I thought it was me" and " Do me" never got old on the dancefloor. I never played a party without all of the above being requested by everyone back home in Santa Paula,Ca. For anyone who had a taste for the 80's dance music ...this is a mixture of R& b, New Jack, Soul-(When will I see You Smile Agian?) that you need in your collection. It's 2007 and i'm still DJing and i'm still playing these same BBD cuts on the dancefloor on the regular! This album is a prime example of how good the music was back in the 80's...want proof...i'm still playing BBD almost 20 years later and getting the same reaction from the dancefloor...! JC Cota[...]
This cd is DOPE!.......2007-02-05
One one my favorite groups, with New Edition being my favorite. This cd takes me back to the days when your boyfriend use to make love song mixtapes. I know i had one with "I Do Need You" and When Will I See You Smile Again. Love every song on this and with the way music is now it's rare to have a cd with more than 1-2 even decent songs. Classic, Classic, Classic!!!!!!
Ivy League.......2006-07-11
The spin-off trio from New Edition formed by Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe to form Bell Biv DeVoe. Their debut album and lead single Poison combined R&B, dance and hip-hop with timeless quotable "...never trust a big butt and a smile..." to bring back memories of that day in time. The ten song album starts off with "Dope!". This song definitely sets the tone for the LP and builds expectation that hasn't been left out with again memorable lyrics "...come here girl I wanna knock your boots..." that was also produced by Dr. Freeze. "B.B.D. (I Thought It Was Me)?" continued on exposing the multi-talented group and their style. As a majority of this LP "Let Me Know Something?!" continues with fast pace dance tunes smoothed by Bell's vocals. "...take a look at me / tell me do you like what you see..." bluntly stated on "Do Me!" as they slow the tempo down a few degrees for a hot sexual encounter. Referencing the life of New Edition and the transition, "Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph And Johnny (Word To The Mutha)!" connects to the members and the fan which was produced themselves with the help of Peace Production. "Ain't Nut'in' Changed!" is all hip-hop down to the production from Hank Shocklee, Eric Sadler and Keith Shocklee (also Public Enemy) as one of the three songs produced by the team. Tracks nine and ten contains the only ballads found on this album produced by Timmy Gatling and Alton Stewart with "When Will I See You Smile Again?" and "I Do Need You". The ballads show more mature sound (N.E. with Johnny Gill) harmonies that made them popular for that time. As New Edition or B.B.D they still know how to entertain with great classic songs.
HIP! FUNKY! FRESH!.......2006-06-20
I got my hands on "Poison" 8 years ago when I bought it for cheap at a used CD shop. This album has its moments with the strongest tracks being the ones that were played on the radio: BBD (I Thought It Was Me), Do Me!, Poison, When Will I See You Smile Again?, and I Do Need You. The other songs I didn't care too much for. Thank goodness they didn't have more than 11 songs! Even though these guys had no real rap skills, they still delivered the goods. They had a style, they were hip, and had a few good singles under their belts.
