Sings Cole Porter
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Recorded in 1990, the same year various pop stars came out in recognition of Cole Porter and AIDS awareness with Red, Hot + Blue, Dionne Warwick's Porter album collects 13 favorites. It's hard to go wrong with this singer or this songwriter, but the production is pretty middle of the road, neither strikingly good nor shockingly bad. She's backed by a large orchestra, except in the reprise of "Night and Day," in which Stanley Jordan and the late Grover Washington Jr. add a smooth-jazz groove. No, Dionne's not exactly Ella here, but then she's not trying to be. --David Horiuchi --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Long considered a jewel in Verve Records' very impressive crown, Fitzgerald's songbook collections of various composers--a series that was started by the success of this set--are all wonderful, but her natural wit and intelligence was at its most perfect with Cole Porter's erudite, urbane songs. While not as scat-oriented as her small group outings, these Porter sets offer her most realized pop performances. Also, the gold remastering does a fine job of bringing out the nuances in the arrangements, making this a treasure for the serious collector and the casual listener alike. A true American music gem. --Skip Heller

I Love Ella in Paris!.......2007-01-30
I received this CD for Christmas. I never listened to
another Christmas carol after this started playing.
This not only has Ella's great vocals, but it has songs
that everyone, at least everyone of my age, knows
and loves. On a trip to Paris we listened
to it every evening in our apartment while sipping our wine and watching
the barges glide down the Seine. When Ella sang "I Love
Paris", that did it for my friend. She bought it as soon as she got back home.
A Best Seller in Heaven.......2007-01-06

The First Lady of Song Sings Cole Porter Gems.......2006-12-13
"In Ella Fitzgerald there is a basic purity of sound and of style; she sings truly and she sings honestly. She is the Hemingway of the singers. Is there another singer alive today whose work, like Hemingway, is so basic and simple on the surface and yet so meaningful? There are none, of course. In the jargon Hemingway loves so well, today it is Ella, the champion, against the field." ~ Norman Granz ~
"What it is we recognize and enjoy as distinctively "Cole Porter" in Cole Porter lyric? Actually there are many great things in Porter lyrics and this gives them a continuing charm by always giving us something new to discover. But there is a key trait or quality that is paramount in a Porter lyric. It is intelligence that is the reigning force in Porter, putting all his facts, facilities and philosophies into the right balance to make good entertainment. And that, after all, is his purpose." ~ Fred Lounsberry ~
This two-CD-set presents the very best of Cole Porter songs as interpreted by the legendary songbird, Ella Fitzgerald at her best, and arranged and conducted by Buddy Bregman so remarkably wonderful. It's one of the best-ever Songbook series she recorded. This set offers a compilation of the most popular Cole Porter gems from stage shows and motion pictures from 1929 thru 1954, except for one track, "Miss Otis Regrets," which is neither from stage nor screen.
Cole Porter was one of the few great songwriters who can creatively write a song by himself and didn't need a songwriting partner. He was at par with Irving Berlin and Frank Loesser in that category. In these recordings, his songs really shine through with Ella Fitzgerald's beautiful interpretations, from "Begin The Beguine," "Do I Love You" and "Every Time We Say Goodbye" to "You Do Something To Me," "Easy To Love" and "I Concentrate On You."
This is essential not only to all Ella Fitzgerald and Cole Porter fans, but also to anyone who loves the Songbook series.
A collector's item.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!.......2006-09-02

This is probably the best compilation of Sinatra songs available. Cole Porter's romantic wit, Nelson Riddle's sense of timing, and Sinatra's voice combined in these cuts in a way not bettered in the history of pop music. And because of the continuity of composer and arranger, there is a seamless flow to the collection. This CD contains the original 1953 version of "I've Got You under My Skin. That's the one that retains the intro with the incredible phrase "When I'm out on a quiet spree, fighting that old ennui" and the reference to cocaine--both of which were axed in the 1962 Neal Hafti-arranged cut. Another reason to hear Frank sing Cole is that these songs were recorded between 1953 and 1960, when he experienced his greatest heartbreak (Ava), his biggest defeat (losing his voice), and his biggest triumph (receiving an Oscar). This is a wise singer singing wise songs. --Karen Croft

C'est manifique!.......2007-06-01
This is a compilation of Cole Porter songs performed by Frank Sinatra for Capitol Records. Frank Sinatra was the greatest singer of popular songs of the 20th Century. Cole Porter was the greatest composer of popular songs of the 20th Century. Two greats that go great together! This is a fantastic CD that any fan of pop standards should enjoy.
NO OTHER VOICE.......2007-01-24
SINATRA VOICE AT ITS BEST AND SINGING THE WONDERFUL SONGS OF THE MUSICALS.IT DOESNT HURT FOR HIM TO BE SINGING THE SONGS OF ONE OF THE GREAT SONGWRITERS. BUT NOBODY CAN SING ANYTHING EVER LIKE FRANK SINATRA. I LOVE THIS CD.
Frankly speaking, an excellent effort .......2006-08-08
If you have all of Frank Sinatra's classic Capitol albums (1953-1961)then you won't NEED this CD since all the tracks can be found on his studio albums and soundtrack albums of this period. On the other hand, you will WANT it for it sure is convenient to have all of these great Cole Porter songs on one CD.
I first purchased this on LP many years ago, one of the first Sinatra LPs I purchased, and dubbed it onto a reel-to-reel tape for frequent listening. At the time, I didn't realize that this was an anthology cobbled together by Capitol to have some new product to compete with the new Reprise recordings.
Cole Porter is my favorite pop standard composer (along with Johnny Mercer) and Sinatra sings Porter better than anyone, so I was glad to buy this album, whatever the motivation for putting it out. "Night And Day" is probably my favorite song on the CD but I love every song on it and so will you. The CD has some additional tracks not on the original LP release so even if your vinyl is in good shape (like mine), you'll probably buy this disc, if you can find it
Two Kings Together!.......2005-07-19
Cole Porter was one of the greatest songwriters of 20th century. Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest performers of 20th century. So, must I write more?
On this compilation you will find songs from Sinatra Sings For Swingin' Lovers (I've Got You Under My Skin, Anything Goes), High Society soundtrack (Mind If I Make Love To You, You're Sensational), A Swingin' Affair! (Night And Day, You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To, At Long Last Love, From This Moment On), Can-Can (I Love Paris, C'est Magnifique).
But even if you have all this albums, this one you should by too.
Frank, Cole, & Nelson! The Top!.......2004-08-04
With the current movie "Delovely" out, any serious Cole Porter fan must check out Old Blue Eyes Select Edition!. Everyone song here is top notch, but 6 are unsurpassed, without question the best versions ever done! They are (1) "I've Got You under My Skin" (usually ranking among the handful of top Frank songs), "What is this Thing Called Love", here done as a yearning ballad, (3) "Anything Goes", a real riot!,(4) "Just One Of Those Things", with one of the snappiest, trickiest arrangements ever! (5) a supercharged "Night and Day", and (6)"From this Moment On", perhaps a lesser known tune that completely blows away any other version I've heard! Top Frank and Nelson doing some of Mr. Porter's timeless best!

Old arrangements, great songs.......2007-05-07
Another great album, because of Porter's song.
Sinatra's vocals are ok ( in his Album with Jobim he sounds like Sylvia Telles - i.e. much better )
The arrangements with women screaming for him is the only lowlight of the album.
Don't buy from CDNOW Preferred Buyer's Club........2007-03-29
I never got the CD and Amazon and CDNOW Preferred Buyer's Club ignored my emails. I plan on returning to the "bricks and mortar" stores where I can actually walk out with the product in my hands and not get ripped off by shady merchants.
Love, Hate.......2006-10-15
I love Cole Porter music. Could listen forever, However, this album sucks. When I bought it I thought it would be good. How bad could Frank Sinatra be? Well he's very bad and ruins Cole Porter's music. If anyone is considering buying this, please review it first.
Delightful album.......2004-12-17
I enjoy listening to this tremendously. Though not particularly a Sinatra fan, the album provides a good playlist of Porter tunes and Sinatra's interpretations. Some songs come from live performances and the screaming girls in the background distract to some extent. Nevertheless, it's a great collection of well known and not so well known Porter tunes. I especially love "Cherry Pie Oughta' be You" which isn't normally part of Porter retrospectives. Listening to this almost always elevates my mood.
THIS is how Cole Porter 's music SHOULD be sung.......2004-07-07
Well - I listened to the recently released "De-Lovely" soundtrack a couple of times and it left me empty so I went looking to fill my cup and found what I was looking for in my stack of cd's. If you REALLY want to hear Cole Porter's stunning music at it's very best get this cd. There is a reason why Frank Sinatra has 550 available items here in music at Amazon.com. You won't feel so empty after seeing the movie if you fill your soul with music from these tracks.
Sinatra sings:
"Night and Day;"
and my favorite Cole Porter tune: "Begin the Beguine;"
"I Get a Kick Out of You with" a kick;
the most loveliest of lovely -"I Love You;"
Medley: "Easy to Love/I've Got You Under My Skin;"
"Don't Fence Me In;"
"I Concentrate on You;"
"Why Shouldn't I;"
"Just One of Those Things;"
"Why Can't You Behave?" - Phil Moore Four;
"So in Love;"
"You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" - June Hutton;
"Cherry Pies Ought to Be You" - Rosemary Clooney;
"You Do Something to Me;"
"I Am Loved"
"You Don't Remind Me"
These beautiful songs deserve this special treatment.

Not nearly as good as Vol. 1.......2007-04-26
I love Ella Fitzgerald, so any of her albums are great, but for some reason this just doesn't have the same magic as Vol. 1 in this series. That is one of my favorite CDs, so I thought this one would be as good. She is always amazing, and the better songs on this album are 'Night and Day', 'So In Love', 'I've Got you Under My Skin', and 'Don't Fence Me In.' The last is probably my favorite. For an Ella fan, it's worth buying. But buy 'Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook Vol. 1' first.
The Voices of Angels.......2005-08-30
Ella Fitzgerald is one of those rare people that can seldom be found in the world of musicians and vocal singing Jazz Ballads. She is masterful in both Volumes One and Two of the Cole Porter Song Book CD's. If you want to hear an angel on earth sing get both these CD's from Amazon.com, especially if your going to propose marriage to someone during dinner, I recommend that you have this music playing softly in the backround.
THE BEST COLE PORTER ALBUM EVER.......2001-07-28
This and Vol. 1 of "The Cole Porter Songbook" is the best collection of Porter's songs you'll find. Fitzgerald hits all the right beats. She's emotional when she should be emotional. Flirty when she should be flirty. Perhaps the most appealing part of her performance is the sense of humor that shines through. And so does Porter's. It's the best songwriter and the best singer all in one. How can you beat it? If you don't have Vol. 1, buy the complete set. You'll save money in the long run. Because you'll want both volumes once you have one of 'em.
I love Ella in the springtime.......2000-06-05
Even better than volume one. From the gorgeous rendition of I Love Paris to the delightful and fun Don't Fence Me In (which noone else should even bother singing again because Ella has perfected it), this CD has one great song after another, different in moods, yet united by their great arrangements and above all Ella's clear beautiful voice and perfect phrasing. On some of the tracks, especially I've Got You Under My Skin (this version blows Sinatra's away) and Don't Fence Me In, the sound quality is remarkable and it sounds like it was recorded yesterday not in the mid 50s.
De-Lovely.......2000-04-21
The companion to volume 1--you can't have one without the other. Beautiful, lyrical renditions of "I Love Paris" and "So in Love." "It's All Right with Me" is really hot, and "Don't Fence Me In" is a fun finish. Really, they're all favorites. As with volume 1, Buddy Bregman provides the apt orchestra arrangements. I can't honestly say whether I prefer either volume; whenever I listen to one of them, I invariably play the other immediately afterward.

There have probably never been a singer and a songwriter as perfect for each other as Ella and Cole, and this delicious, inexhaustibly delightful album is the pinnacle of Fitzgerald's career, not to mention one of the most likeable records ever made. Porter's songs were wry, sly and as sexy as he could get away with; over Buddy Bregman arrangements that have the good sense to stay out of the way, Ella delivers them with absolute grace and wit, savoring the words' erudite jokes but integrating them into her playful, technically astonishing swing. The Cole Porter Songbook--augmented with three illuminating alternate takes in this rerelease--works as jazz, as Broadway, and as an example of what a great vocalist can do with the right lyric. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
The best of both.......2003-02-24
If you're a Cole Porter fan and an Ella Fitzgerald fan, you get the best of both worlds here. Her interpretations of Mr. Porter's songs make this a listening delight and so darn hot!
If it's Ella, it's got to be good..........2002-08-15
What keeps me from awarding this famous album five stars? Hard to say. Price is a consideration. It is the wonderful Ella, singing the wonderful stuff of Cole Porter, but it's been selling well for more than 45 years. I think by now the price ought to drop by a fiver or so. There are a lot of great jazz records on CD from the 1952-62 era one can buy for less than this one. Second, I like the "Ella in Berlin" live album better, probably because I owned that one in high school in the 60's as my introduction to her, and it has great nostalgic value. Third, the orchestrations by Buddy Bregman, while they don't get in Ella's way, also don't make enough of a splash. This set is a bit low-key for my taste. I do prefer this disc to the one called "Best of the Songbooks", but I think Ella really comes to life either live, or sharing the recorded gig with Louis Armstrong, for instance. Let me switch five of these 16 songs for five that show up on Volume II, and I'd award that fifth star afterall.
she's the top.......2000-06-05
With the exception of Miss Otis Regrets which is too slow for my taste, these songs are all sung impeccably. The combination of Porter's incredibly witty and daring lyrics, great arrangements, and Ella's crystal clear voice and brilliant phrasing make for a great record. She may not be emotional like Billie Holiday but in my book between the purity of the voice and her timing and phrasing noone does it like Ella (for example, in Always True to You in My Fashion Ella just KNOWS that the key verse is the one beginning "There's an oilman known as Tex" so she gives it a different emphasis. The sound quality is phenomenal too.
A Truly Remarkable Woman.......2000-05-31
Wow.
Can you say cocktail music? Can you believe that the witty lyrics and word play of Cole Porter can get better? Absolutely.
Ella has a rich voice that makes you smile and slide back into your chair. Tap your glass along with your foot as she swings to Anything Goes. Her rendition of Lets Do It is simply classic.
I discovered this CD years ago and always find someone to share it with a smile. You may experience other collections more upbeat and more bouncy, but Ella comes through like a charm here.
First Lady of Song and Great American Songwriter.......2000-04-01
Ella's first album in the celebrated Songbook series done for Verve is still one of my favorites. Who could resist Ella's pure voice coupled with Cole Porter's wonderful melodies? The warmth and sweetness of Ella's voice comes through in "All Through the Night," "Do I Love You?," and her incomparable rendition of "Miss Otis Regrets." Other songs swing, such as "Anything Goes" and "Too Darn Hot." I've heard criticisms that the orchestra fails to match the top-notch arrangements of some of the later Songbooks accompanied by other bandleaders, but Buddy Bregman is no hack. The real stars here are Ella and Cole Porter. I never hear one of these songs performed without comparing it to Ella's version. This album is timeless and beautful.

Customer Reviews:
Coming to Kiri's rescue.......2007-07-03
I am delighted to counter the carping, grouchy reviews that this crossover CD from Kiri Te Kanawa has received here. I am not a die-hard fan of hers in corssover pop standards. Her Gerhswin didn't swing, and even her Eliza Doolittle was overly stiff and reserved. But this Cole Porter anthology shows enormous grwoth in style. Kir is very easy-going and phrases quite naturally. She is in sympathy with Porter's sophistication, and her impeccable intonation certainly helps when it comes to the composer's triky chromatic melodies.
I can't see why anyone would get anythng but the purest pleasure form this, the best of Kiri's crossover efforts along with her Kern album.
Thanks but no thanks.......2003-12-13
Kiri should never attempt to sing popular American music, she doesn't have the voice, talent, or swing to do so. Sorry kiri, thanks, but NO thanks...
Pathetic..........2003-11-29
In respected jazz critic Will Friedwald's book, he's very critical of Kiri's lousy recordings of standards(anyone can hire Nelson riddle and try to sound legit). She doesn't pull it off. Pass on this please. This should have never been released.
Porter.......2001-08-28
This is a nice collection of Porter by a wonderful singer. Kiri may not give the greatest interpretation of American music (try Dawn Upshaw), but it is still a delightful collection. The arrangements are interesting and you have to apprectiate the big-band sound. Over-all, a fine collection.
This is perhaps Kiri's finest cd.......2000-11-14
What a pleasure it is to hear Kiri sing these EVERGREENS. This could possibly be her finest cd. On this particular cd Kiri really belts out the songs. This is unusual for her, because her style is more laid back than what's performed here. On this cd I think she would be considered a very polished crooner(possibly a supped up Barbra Striesand)
I thought Peter Matz did a great job with his arrangements. The orchestra sounded right on target for most songs. The main concern I had for this cd was the song selection. I thought Kiri could have added a few more big gems from C.P.'s repertoire.
All I can say is buy this cd. It will please!

Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but not great.......2007-04-10
The 25 tracks on this CD have exactly one thing that binds them together: all the songs were written (both words and music) by Cole Porter. Some of the singers doing the songs were very well-known artists, others were obscure ones I never heard of. Most of the songs have become standards, but a couple are quite obscure. Most of the recordings were made in the 1950s, but not quite all of them. Most are taken from albums, but at least one is shown as "previously unreleased" on the liner notes. And the styles range from quite jazzy to almost operatic. So this is a very mixed bag.
It should be noted that some of the artists (such as Tony Bennett and Dinah Shore) are represented with recordings made after their primes, as they are best known in work for other record companies, and only recordings for Capitol (or other companies that Capitol took over) are included.
But although there is a variation in all these factors, most, perhaps all, sounded decent to me. Not great, but certainly good.
Disappointed.......2006-11-05
After seeing the motion picture "De-Lovely" and reading several Cole Porter bio's, I eagerly anticipated listening to "Capitol Sings Cole Porter: Anything Goes". Although the Capitol CD contains many more selections by competent, well known artists, I much prefer listening to the CD from the soundtrack of the movie. The "Capitol Sings..." arrangements are slick, but to my ear the De-Lovely arrangements are more wonderfully crafted and have a much more sensuous, emotional quality, even when sung by non-singers Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd. Diana Krall's interpretation of "Begin the Beguine", along with the gorgeous minor key accompaniment, is worth the ownership of the CD alone. I find it to be nothing less than thrilling, no matter how often one listens. I gave my "Capitol Sings..." CD away.
A disappointing "Greatest".......2006-03-20
This sterling line-up of songs by the witty tunesmith Cole Porter, as interpreted by some of the 20th-century's greatest singer/performers - Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, etc. - is surprisingly dull. Very little information accompanies the CD, and I suspect many of the numbers were recorded in mono, which might account for the weak stereo sound "enhanced" by digital technology.
Or maybe Capital was forcing the singers to complete contracts. I found the recently released soundtrack for Delovely, a bad bio-pic about Porter, far more enjoyable and it features a cast of some of the best singers of the early 21st century.
PORTER DONE RIGHT.......2005-08-17
THIS CD IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED, COLE PORTER SUPERBLY TREATED BY VARIOUS ARTISTS.
~"You're The Top" Cole Porter~Awesome Selections!!!~.......2004-08-30
Romantic, rhythmic, sophisicated and incredibly brilliant are the classic works of 20th Century legendary composer Cole Porter who is represented here by an impressive array of Capitol recordings artists. The smooth sophisicated swing of "All Of You" kick off a program of greatly diverse and fascinating performances and always true to her legendary fashion is a superb Peggy Lee while Tony Bennett does a stunning "Anything Goes" with Count Basie. "I Happen To Like New York" smolders and soars with the haunting intensity of a soulful Judy Garland vocal that is a truly stunning masterpiece!!! A mesmerizing Nancy Wilson vocal make "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" a memorable listening experience and this collection is a keeper for those who love the finest songs and singers that music has to offer. Thanks to Cole Porter and all those great Capitol Recording Artists for making this great collection possible...highly recommended!!!!!!!

--David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
This CD is still in print!.......2007-06-25
BMG/Sony still has prints of this bright Warwick session produced by the late Arif Mardin. Warwick fans in England and Japan bought it. I mostly liked "Begin The Beguine" and "Night and Day" when I first heard this CD back in 1990. A great concept album that should have done better in the States if given a solid promotional push.
This is The Bottom, not The Top!.......2007-01-03
I simply cannot understand why all this album was recorded with sample keyboards, making sound of false violins. Pure disaster.
Certainly the most disappointing album by Ms. Warwick. Not even the great Cole Porter save the disc. One may say she is great as always, I cannot disagree.
Maybe the budget was small and so the producers gave birth to this completely neglectable album.
Nothing groundbreaking, but enchanting nonetheless.......2006-08-12
This album was recorded in 1990, by which time all the years of smoking had clearly taken their toll on Dionne's once enviable vocal range. The musical arrangements here are pretty generic as others have mentioned, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as songs this good basically carry themselves with at least decent instrumentation (and there is plenty of orchestration on this record, even if it is a bit uninspired). Dionne's voice does sound a bit worn and tired throughout, but at the same time retains a rich quality and sophistication that make this album a very pleasant listen from start to finish.
A real good Abulm.......2005-03-08
This is a real good cd, I would like to see it become aviable again.
Pleasant but what a disappointment!.......2004-12-27
When this was originally released I couldn't get my copy soon enough, not especially because of Dionne but because of the style of music. I have enjoyed Warwick's music in the past and think that it would've been lovely to have had her release a definitive anthology of Bacharach/David songs, at which she excelled. Here, she isn't ill-served by Porter's writing, for the most part, but the arrangements aren't so much awful as they are completely and unforgivingly generic; there isn't a single track that stands out in my memory for they all sound exactly alike: same tempo, same style, and even Dionne herself falls into the trap of sameness, giving each lyric the identical performance, though to her credit she does seem to be enjoying herself quite a bit. Every once in a while I'll play this album, just to see if my feelings have changed, and in the nearly-15 years since this was released, they haven't. Not at all. That said, for her big fans or those interested in this style of music but who aren't entirely discriminating, go for it - you'll probably enjoy it. For the serious fan of standards, however, I'd say buy it on the cheap. Definitely in that "nice, but no cigar" category.

Sings Cole Porter.......2006-05-21
We love his earlier music. But this much later edition leaves this previously wonderful singer totally wanting. We listened to each selection and found nothing of any merit in comparison to his earlier works, plus the accompaniment was equally awful. And we are in the non-profit field of providing musically underserved Philadelphia school children with a wide range of music education programs through an organization called Musicopia (previously Strings for Schools). Absolutely don't buy it-or you can our purchase free.
A Real Mood Booster!.......2002-03-02
If you're stuck in Friday afternoon gridlock like I was when I first previewed this CD, be prepared to sport a silly grin in no time. It's that good. Who'da thought that John Gary, that supreme romantic balladeer, would get together with a bunch of swingin' New Orleans cats and cook! He's obviously enjoying himself here and in fine form. In one sense this is a more intimate John Gary because he's casual and relaxed and there's no "big studio production" feel. John's just one of the guys and he gives all of the players ample opportunity to strut their stuff. I had the sense of "listening in" on one of his appearances at some small, intimate club.
There are 16 Cole Porter favorites here - it would be hard to choose a personal favorite, although I "got a kick out of" his clever low-key rendition of "Let's Do It". They're mostly all pick-me-ups except for the final track, "Everytime We Say Goodbye", which should bring a tear to the eye of any true-blue John Gary fan now that he is gone and probably up there right now working with Gabriel!

Who'da thought that John Gary, that supreme romantic balladeer, would get together with a bunch of swingin' New Orleans cats and cook! He's obviously enjoying himself here and in fine form. He also researched the material extensively and provides documentation on the history of each song as well as an inspired account of Cole Porter's life.

There are 16 Cole Porter favorites here. If you're familiar only with Gary's smooth ballad past, his upbeat renditions, especially of "I Get a Kick Out of You", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Just One of Those Things" and "From This Moment On" will be a revelation and should prove that he's capable of swinging with the best of them. I also "got a kick out of" his droll, low-key rendition of "Let's Do It". John Gary and Cole Porter-a perfect match!.......2001-04-25
I am fortunate to own this CD, as well as a few of John's early RCA Victor albums. This CD represented John at his best, singing great Cole Porter songs backed by a superb jazz combo. Although his beautiful voice is now silenced, we are fortunate to have his music around for future generations to enjoy. It would be nice to see RCA release many of his early albums on CD; these are prime examples of the kind of singer he was (I cannot understand why he was not as popular as Sinatra)!
John Gary - Master of Expression.......2000-03-16
As an opera fan for many years, I have heard the greatest voices from the past 100 years, including John Gary. Although John is no Caruso, neither Caruso nor any of the opera Greats could claim greater voices than our own John Gary. I was most skeptical when a friend told me back in 1965 of a voice he had heard that had a 3-octive range. I quickly conceded that John Gary had an incredible range, with the lowest notes as pure and easy and the very highest. He makes it all seem so effortless. But even more, is the poetical expression and warmth that he captures in each song which can bring tears to your eyes. I was very saddened to learn that John Gary recently pass away. I keep checking the Amazon.com to see if they have release any of this earlier albums in CD. Although I have several of his albums, I no longer have the equipment to adequately play them. I would also be interested in his biography if one has beem written.

Fantastic song bird.......2007-04-06
Lee Wiley was unique as are these recordings. Her voice is sultry, soft and wonderful to listen to. The songs are all "pop" with great lyrics that make today's songs pale in comparison. I have been a fan of Wiley's for many years but only recently learned we share the same birthdate, October 9th. Maybe that was a "hidden affinity". But in any event I think she is one of the most underrated jazz vocalists of all time.
One of a Kind.......2003-06-15
There never was a singer like Lee Wiley and these singular recordings have survived over the decades as a testament to a smokey, knowing, wry, evocative jazz vocalist beyond compare. The songs have survived over the decades, too--literate, unusual, engaging. A wonderful collection.
Classics from the 40s.......2002-09-09
Lee Wiley made these recordings for the Liberty Record Shop in the days before conglomerates controlled everything on record. She was a singer with great musical style and a clarity of voice that lets every lyric shine through. Plus, she knew everyone in New York and got the best musicians as back up to her intimate, sophisticated vocals. I especially like the tracks with "Organ by Maurice" -- Hammond organ played by Fats Waller, though contract restrictions prohibited using his name. I'd give the Gershwin recordings a slight edge over the Cole Porter takes, but all of them are terrific. This is incredibly stylish music from a time when style meant more than the clothes one wore. The recording quality is quite good -- an essential disc for every lover the American popular song.
