Bassey Sings Bond - The rest, not so much..........2007-02-19
Dame Shirley Bassey has a great, powerful voice that is totally wasted in this CD. The accompanying music is immature in its arrangement and has a retro quality that does her no justice. Imagine her singing the theme to "Three's Company" and you'll have the jest of this CD. Now, if you want to really hear her at her best, I recommend "The Living Tree", which I believe is her latest single. The arrangement of this song will make you crank up your stereo, stand in the middle of the living room and lift your arms as you sing along with her. It's powerful stuff!
Bassey (should) Sing Bond.......2006-04-19
I wanted to type "Bassey (could) Sing Bond", but she still can. Her singing is fine. As in a previous review, I too was very disapointed with the arrangements of the songs, and of course the lack of an orchestra. It's almost as if she was recording a 'demo' to be re-recorded later using a real orchestra (and better arrangements). I hope some day this happens. I waited over a year for a copy of this CD to become available (and paid quite a high price) -- but that's because Ms. Bassey was my favorite theme song vocalist for the Bond films and I'm a big fan of both.
Nobody does it better?.......2004-09-06
Unfortunately, I'm afriad they do!
What a wasted opportunity - Shirley's voice is great as always, though rather uncharacteristically subdued on this album.
The biggest let down are the truly terrible arrangements. This should have been a classic album - and would have benefitted from full orchestrations - instead we get a synthesizer, which gives a very bad sound and ruins the whole thing.
If I had to highlight any of the tracks they would be Thunderball, Live and let die and perhaps Moonraker - even though these are mediocre at best.
We are all crying out for this album to be remade properly with Propellerheads or David Arnold - this version is sadly for die-hard Bassey fans only I'm sorry to say.
