Bewitched [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It doesn't take a fortune teller to figure out that the "Bewitched" soundtrack will be a lighthearted, whimsical collection organized around the theme of magic. As a result, this CD is a great way to get your hands on such classics as Frank Sinatra's "Witchcraft," Ella Fitzgerald performing "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead" and, the highlight, Steve Lawrence's beefed-up big band take on the original instrumental show theme "Bewitched." As for brand new music, there are three tracks: The Actual's rock-meets-new-wave cut "Dancing On The Perimeter," a very Parisian-chic "City of Love" by Persephone's Bees, and an appearance by Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth. (Chenoweth, who plays Maria Kelly in the Bewitched movie and starred in Wicked on Broadway, offers up a sultry cover of the Eagles' "Witchy Woman.") All told, much like the original series, it is the old school feeling that provides the musical highlights on this disc: if you are craving a collection of classic big band and swing, then consider Bewitched a good introduction to some sassy, brassy classics. --Denise Sheppard

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Witchy Woman worth it.......2007-02-16
The overall CD was pretty good and I enjoy listening to it. Kristin Chenoweth, who is in the movie, does an outstanding version of "Witchy Woman". I listened to that over and over. It's a great soundtrack and I think anyone could like this music.
I love bEWiTcHeD.......2007-01-22
for a movie that did so bad I loved it soo much. The soundtrack has super cool songs like city of love and Witchy Women etc..
Its amazing
Amazing........2006-08-08
The movie, Bewitched, is truly a bewitching movie to say the least. I adore it incredibly and the music chosen was perfect for the movie. City of Love and 'Bout Time I feel are wonderful songs, just lovely for the selection. I like especially jazz and swing genres which was what many of the songs are based around in this soundtrack.
**Great cd to all who aren't quite sure and are contemplating buying it, if you enjoyed the movie, you can take it with you wherever you go in your cd player or your mp3 player with the music from the title.
Buy the CD, not the movie.......2006-08-01
I love this CD with the great mix of old and new songs. However this movie was a total mess, I kept hoping Darrin would get turned into a frog (or something) and left that way. He irritated the heck out of me!
Witchy Woman.. kRiStiN takes the honors.......2006-04-22
Well let me just say Kristin isn't a witch but there is something quite transfixing about her version of Witchy Woman. Definetly a must have cd just for her voice!

5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10
Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!
Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27
Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25
As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !
A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27
If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.
The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.
Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.
Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22
Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

On its second Elektra album, Bewitched, Luna lost the silly tiny "squared" symbol after its name and gained a second guitarist: Sean Eden joins former Galaxie 500 leader Dean Wareham, Chills bassist Justin Harwood, and Feelies drummer Stanley Demeski. This time, the result is less the tentative, slightly disjointed work of an (ahem) alternative supergroup than the product of a tasteful psychedelic rock band specializing in stylish restraint and a distinctive, clean, and crisp guitar and drum sound. Luna doesn't deny its influences: Demeski brings the Feelies' trademark crazy rhythm to any project he joins, and while Wareham used to squirm whenever he was asked about Galaxie 500's obvious debt to the Velvet Underground, he now underlines the connection by inviting Sterling Morrison to guest on two tracks. --Jim DeRogatis
Customer Reviews:
Luna's best.......2007-04-13
I have been a huge Luna fan for more than 10 years (since Penthouse first came out). Penthouse usually gets "best of artist" when you read about Luna but this is my personal favorite. The first song "California (all the way) hooked me instantaneously and has remained one of my favorite Luna songs to this day. The entire album will play in your head for days after listening to it....it is a special, dreamy trip that will both elate and calm you. Some say Luna is an acquired taste, for me I loved them from first listen. Wareham's "singing voice" is really more of a "story-telling voiced"....it fits the music. The guitar work on all the albums is from another planet, ranging from raw and loud to dream-like and mesmerizing. The jams are riveting but all are properly timed, the right length and fit the songs. It has been 3 years since the band broke up and I find I really miss their sound. Dean and Britta continue making music but (I'm sorry to say) there is something missing.
All of the Luna albums have moments but Penthouse, Bewitched and Rendezvous are stand-out classics and should be in all serious music collections. Buy these discs, put them in your player, turn up the volume and relax into a comfortable chair. Prepare yourself for a special sonic experience.
Lunalicious.......2006-07-15
I'm surprised to see that this album isn't more heavily reviewed because I'd put it up there in my top hundred, easily. I'm a long time fan and this album in particular has always been a great listen, not just for me, but anyone I've played it for. For example, I have this silly story: I was a lifeguard at the township pool for 4 summers as a teen and I was a bit of a musical rebel. I would always try to monopolize the cd player, and on rainy days all of the lifeguards would have an opinion about what they heard. We woud listen to all kinds of stuff, most of which I didn't personally enjoy, but occassionally I got to put on The Cure or even The Smiths. Soon I'd loose my music choice privileges and mostly I'd have to endure more drivel for a while. Well, in the summer of 1994, I'd been there for 3 years and had some seniority, plus as far as good music was concerned, it was in abundance. One summer evening, I played 'Bewitched' on a cd player facing the pool. Everyone was so relaxed they nearly feel asleep! I don't mean that in a negative way. Perhaps it's a bit of exaggeration, but no one even realized the time while they listened to it. Everyone enjoyed it so much they forgot who put it on or what they were doing and asked aloud, "Who is this???" I answered proudly, "Luna." From then on, 'Bewitched' was in heavy rotation at the pool that summer. Just sitting there at a nearly empty pool at sunset, seeing the glistening reflection of the sun on the water to the sound of the title track of 'Bewitched' is something I'll never forget, which, might be partly due to the fact that I was going though a break-up, but that only added to Luna's appeal for me. I saw Luna in late August at the Troc in Philly that summer, brought my friends and a beautiful girl I'd recently met, and witnessed some of the most intimate and blissful rock music I'd ever seen. My date loved it, though I'm sure she was a bit confused about how anyone even knew about them. But did she buy a CD afterwards? Who knows? I doubt any of the lifeguards at the pool did, however, everyone loved it nontheless. Believe that this album is timelessly good rock music and everything will work out. Play it loud and proud!
Snooze Fest.......2006-03-29
I have no idea where the Velvet Underground comparisons come from in relation to Luna. The singer resembles Lou Reed only in the sense that he occasionally (actually, more than occasionally) sings off-key, but he sounds an awful lot more like an upper west-side latte wimp, than Lou Reed's late 60s, early 70s Alphabet City junkie. The music is tuneless (actually, Tiger Lilly is mildly catchy, but that's about it) and has none of the noise or melodic stylings of VU. In short, they sound like a very watered down Galaxy 500. There's so much worthwhile music out there--I'm really sorry I wasted my money on this bland, boring, arthritic stuff.
Just lovely...........2005-01-12
A lot of folks who have reviewed this cd seem to like Penthouse more. I, on the other hand, put this alongside their latest and and final disc, Rendezvous as their most shimmery and addicting. Wareham's lyrics and delivery are beyond charming. The guitar work is clearly inspired, and they have a tone that is mood elevating as it is also melancholy.....I love this band!!!!! I had the good fortune to see this band live back in the late 90's (they opened for the Cocteau Twins), and alas, I didn't pay attention to their performance..........
Not Exactly a Sleeping Pill.......2004-06-22
Very few bands put off the same vibe as does Luna. Particularly on Bewitched, I think Luna begins to define their own sound as sort of a dreamy, sleepy indie-pop. Don't get me wrong, though--this album won't put you to sleep. Lead singer Dean Wareham is a brilliant, quirky lyricist who paints such lovely, real pictures of everyday situations. You know, the conversations and moments that aren't easily put into words. And along with these unique observations come extraordinary sound. This recording is so crisp and clean--from the opening reverb-soaked riff of "California All the Way" to the jazzy, vibraphone tones of "Sleeping Pill." The standout tracks are "California...","Tiger Lily", and "Bewitched". I think I like these the most because Luna doesn't wear its Velvet Underground influence on its sleeve as plainly on these songs.
So, to get the full effect of "Bewitched," I recommend you save a listen for a cool, rainy day in June. Open the windows a little, but stay in a reclined or comfortably seated position. Wear headphones, of course, and let the thick wall of textured sounds fill your ears...and be sure to listen to the lyrics...you'll be taken away to places and feelings that seem vaguely familiar.

Laura Fygi CD.......2007-03-31
We have recently discovered this lovely lady with the wonderful voice. She is one of only a few performers who
record ballads and love songs anymore. We have four of her CD's and would like more. Her musical arrangements are the best we've heard in a long time.
What CD is this?.......2006-10-15
I have the original issue CD on the Universal Music label,
11-11-1992. This CD has a different issue date, different cover pic, different label,(Polygram) and completely different track layout and missing tracks.(Universal=15 tracks, Polygram=12). The original tracks were: 1.It's Crazy 2.How Did He Look 3.Let There Be Love 4.Close Enough For Love 5.The End Of A Love Affair 6.Bewitched, Bothered, And Bewildered 7.I wish You Love 8.You've Changed 9.I Only Have Eyes For You 10.A Mark On Your Mind 11.I Love You For Sentimental Reasons 12.Maybe September 13.Do It Again 14.More Love 15.Les Feuilles Mortes.
What in the world is going on here?
My CD is a bit beat up,(I've played it so much), and I can't find another copy anywhere. Can anyone help?
smooth voice.......2006-06-23
What a voice and what a cd. Hear the music sample and judge by your self. This cd is to hear while you are in a relax mood. With your lover? your friend? your special friend? alone? it DOESNT MATTER. You will like it.
An Oldtimer's Reminiscence!.......2006-02-23
Quality rendering of wonderful classics. She showcases a level of quality in voice and styling seldom seen in today's artists.
Wow!!!.......2005-08-09

Customer Reviews:
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Great CPD.......2007-01-10
Great Cherry Poppin' Daddies. An eclectic mix -- as usual. With this kind of variety, you may not like every tune -- but, you're bound to find something new you like, if your a CPD fan.
if you really love music..............2005-12-17
the daddies are for you. i am lucky enough to own all of their work and with the exception of ferociously stoned (their first release), they are all awesome. this is my #1 favorite cd out of all their work. an adventure in musical styles, you will be surprised with every song.
Buy this CD... seriously........2002-01-23
Everything I was ever looking for in music, I found in Rapid City Muscle Car. Skyline Drive is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It is probably the most diverse album you can get and all of the musicians are as talanted as they come. I picked up the CD in an obscure shop on a vacation in Virginia, and it really is all I can remember about the trip. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that Virginia was borning, that's just how powerful this album was. Okay maybe a little boring...
Do yourself a favor and pick this one up, or at least listen to the samples. All of them.
CPD is the best band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-10-24
The Cherry Poppin Daddies are a wonderful band. I really like this CD. Infact out of the four it is my favorite. It has all different kinds of music. The Lyrics are touching. As I said it before they are a wonderful band!
this cd w/o a doubt receives a 5 from me~.......1999-10-17
ok, well, i heard zoot suit riot on the radio, went out and bought the cd. I LOVED IT. so a couple of months later I bought this one, "rapid city muscle car." Quite frankly, i didn't like it. I put it away for a while. When I started to like rock and ska more, I got it back out and started listening to it. I listened to some of the tracks, grew to love some of them, avoided the rest. Then one day, I was in a, well, mood, where I just put it on, and well, more of the songs grew on me. I listened to the entire CD every day, just lettin' it run, u know. I started to learn the words and started to feel the music, and the great, let me stress that, GREAT, lyrics, got me to thinkin' this ain't no ordinary band. I would start singing in school, it was to the point where I would wanna go home just to listen to it!(if i wasn't doing anything more useful than sittin' at a friends house) I mean I have not bought a full length CD in like a year, besides the CPD! why u ask? because I didn't need to! I mean i bought singles and everything but this CD, and the Zoot Suit Riot CD have kept me goin' for like a year and a half now. So let me tell you ppl who came to read my review, if you think this cd is swing, well it is a little, but if you're like me and all you lived for was swing, consider this cd the revolution in your life. it sure changed me, and i guarantee you it'll change you- It got your swing, some rock, punk, ska, even a touch o' country. no matter, you'll love it, so buy it.

Pretty good.......2006-09-02
What people need to realize is that if you are going to go into Cherry Poppin' Daddies back catlogue you need to realize that it isn't like 'Zoot Suit Riot.' Cherry Poppin' Daddies have a wide range of music on every c.d. In 'Kids On The Street' they have like one swing song, a lot of ska/punk songs, and then old rock and country songs. Overall if you are very open minded you will appreciate all their work. Not to mention Steve Perry, to me, has some great lyrics. If you want to by old c.d.s from Cherry Poppin' Daddies start with 'Rapid City Muscule Car' that is a great album then get 'Soul Caddy' amazing lyrics on that album.
Sounds like: Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Aquabats, Royal Noise Brigade
Wow.......2003-03-22
I bought Soul Cadillac about 2 years ago listened to it once and then forgot about it until this year. I needed to hear more. Kids on the Street rocks. There are no bad tracks. this band is so versatile, the songs are clever. This is ska, so if you are expecting swing you may be disappointed or pleasantly surprised. You can't find this kind of stuff on the radio. I anxiously await Rapid City Muscle Car.
Amazing........2002-12-26
I've had this CD for several years, and after hearing it again recently, I feel I owe Cherry Poppin' Daddies a good review. This CD is out of this world. As you grow, your taste in music grows, and this CD has a favorite song for every genre of music that anyone can grow through. I honestly did not think it was possible for a band to write the best song of a genre, and then do it for a different genre, and again for a different one.. it doesn't end. Honestly, you owe it to yourself to buy this CD. While they may be more "swingy" now, this CD only shows a hint of swing. The lyrics are truly breathtaking.. so much further above and beyond anything that you've ever heard. Each band member is absolutely terrific at what they play. The CD is put together well, it's not like one of those CDs where, if you have some friends over, you want to get up and skip over some not so good tracks to impress them. This is one where you can let it play on, and each track they're guaranteed to like. Some say that this CD is a little poppy, as if they were trying to get on the radio. I guarantee they weren't trying to get on the radio, they were trying to show you that they could even go into that area of music strongly enough as all the other areas that they've conquered.
Hope this helps... bottom line is, buy this CD, you won't regret it. Honestly, the only better thing you could do with 15 bucks is donate it to charity.
Rockin.......2000-02-26
Well, if you are gonna buy this album you shouldn't expect what you hear on CPD's Zoot Suit Riot. This album is mix of a bunch of different stlyes and it hits great hights with Irish Whiskey, Don Quijote, Millionare, We'll always have Paris, and Kids on the Street. This CD didnt let me down at all, and will lead you into the CPD world of a band that is not resricted to play one style of music. Definitly add it to your CPD section to your CD colection.
if i hadnt read the reviews i would have hated this cd.......2000-01-16
this is not swing... more like punk-ska. luckily i was expecting this after i got zoot suit riot. but if you're like me and love punk and ska as much as swing it will be all good

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Truncated.......2007-02-19
I have only one objection to this album. She sings only 2 choruses of "To Keep My Love Alive" while the orchestra keeps playing the music over and over. A lyric like that, and they play just the music! There was plenty of time to put the whole lyric in. "If I Were You" (an imitated idea, most notably to my mind by Adams & Strouse in "All American") is a knock-out, and on this one she sings both verses (there is only one chorus). Highly recommended (if you can find it) anyway. "To Keep..." can be heard in it's entirety on other recordings, like on the revival cast recording of "Connecticut Yankee" by Vivienne Segal (on 2 releases!). Now if someone would just record the complete lyrics of "Mt. Greenery" and "Manhattan" - for a change!
a hidden classic.......2006-10-07
Von Stade is in very fine voice on this CD, and her rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is one of the best ever, with a rich, expressive delivery. Her voice has sometimes been considered too operatic for pop material but on this she's just right. Other standouts are "Moon Of My Delight" and the playful "To Keep My Love Alive" but the whole album is solid.
Wonderful record.......2002-11-11
A wonderful record !! Mrs. Von Stade's voice is perfect. I also raccomend this recond because all the arrengments are recreations from the original shows.
exquisite album.......2000-11-10
Contained in this CD are some of the most beautiful versions of the great timeless songs of Rogers and Hart. Coductor John McGlinn's orchestrations are flawless, as are Frederica's vocals. My favorites are 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was', 'My Funny Valentine', 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered', 'Atlantic Blues' and 'A Ship Without a Sail'. Every song is well done and everyone I have turned on to this album loves it.
